The 2012 U.S. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction Nominee

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award are chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

CGCC has been named for the 6th year in a row to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

Of the 513 colleges and universities from across the U.S. named to the Honor Roll, CGCC was one of just 110 that received the recognition of Honor Roll with Distinction, and the only Arizona community college to receive this honor.

CGCC engaged students and staff in more than 85,000 hours of service during the 2010-11 academic year. In addition to students participating in academic service learning related to their curricula, including English, biology, communications, business, education, nutrition, sociology, psychology, and mathematics, many clubs and organizations such as Phi Theta Kappa, the HEAT Club (the Hands-On Environmental Action Team), and the HELP Club (Hands Enriching Life Program) also devoted hundreds of hours to their community engaged in various fund-raising and service projects.

Congratulations to the entire service-learning team, Alison Whiting, Tiffany Kimble, Gloria Milburn, Beth Ann Wright, Vanessa Sandoval, Patrick Williams, Jennifer Spring, Mike Greene, KT Campbell, and Jessie Leach, and to all of the faculty and staff who participate in CGCC’s amazing service-learning program. CGCC Named 2012 Finalist for Institutional Excellence in Climate Leadership

CGCC was recently named as a finalist in the Second Nature Climate Leadership Awards, which recognizes Innovation and Excellence in Climate Leadership at Signatory Institutions of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. CGCC was nominated for implementing operational, instructional, outreach, assessment, and reasearch actions and activities.

The Climate Leadership Awards highlight campus innovation and climate leadership to transition society to a clean, just, and sustainable future.

National Council of Marketing and Public Relations Awards

Medallion Awards

The Marketing & Public Relations Department received two Medallion Awards from the National Council of Marketing and Public Relations for 2010-2011. Marketing & PR received a Gold Medallion for its series of 60 second video spots, and a Bronze Medallion for the Coyote logo redesign. Judges included representatives from business and industry as well as students.

Marketing & PR has received a total of 44 Medallion Awards in the past 12 years. The National Council of Marketing and Public Relations Medallion Awards are designed to recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community, junior, and technical colleges. The National Council of Marketing and Public Relations Regional Medallion Awards are designed to recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community, junior, and technical colleges. The prestigious National Paragon Awards recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community and technical colleges. Congratulations to Trish Niemann, Carol Crane, and Jon Garza.

CGCC Innovation of the Year

The Personal Librarian (PL) = Student Success

“PL” is a partnership between online composition, communication, and library faculty to design effective information literacy instruction in the virtual classroom. The partnership creates a type of new learning community in that aspects of the online courses are co-taught and co-designed by cross-disciplinary faculty members to ensure greater student success.

MCCCD Diversity Advisory Council Award for Excellence

Diane Travers

Diane Travers, Communications Faculty, for receiving the Diversity Advisory Council Award for Excellence. Diane is being recognized for her Service-Learning class project at the Chandler-Gilbert ARC Day Treatment Center. ARC serves adults with developmental disabilities ranging from severe autism to brain injuries to downs syndrome. Diane’s students use their communications skills and theory from class as they engage in socializing, assisting in arts & crafts, assisting with lunch, and dancing. Students perceptions about people with disabilities change through this experience and they put into practice what they are learning in the classroom.

Vanessa Sandoval

Congratulations to CGCC communications faculty, Vanessa Sandoval, who was honored with the Women’s Leadership Group 2012 “Woman of Distinction” Distinguished Achievement Award, which was presented to her at the annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon on April 25 at SMCC.

Vanessa’s nomination read as follows:”Vanessa Sandoval’s leadership influence has been far reaching, from individual students to the community at large. Her first calling is as a faculty member to advance the learning and lives of individual students. As Communication faculty at CGCC for over a decade, Vanessa has influenced hundreds of women in her classroom to gain confidence in their public speaking and small group, interpersonal, and other communication skills. She is an example of continual learning herself, as she recently completed her second Master’s degree. She is a strong advocate for others and her positive and uplifting attitude permeates all areas of her life.”

Town of Gilbert History Maker

Dr. Cindy Barnes Pharr

Dr. Cindy Barnes Pharr was one of 13 history makers honored by the town of Gilbert. The 13 awards were given in 12 categories, including commerce, agriculture, military, and sports. Cindy was honored for being instrumental in the success of the Gilbert Youth Soccer Association (GYSA). Over the past 20 years she helped grow GYSA from 600 participants to 2,600. In 1987 as a freshman attending CGCC , Cindy began volunteering for GYSA as part of community service project for a reading class. She was a constant advocate and fundraiser for soccer fields and worked with the town to build Hetchler Park, which serves 5,000 youth annually. Cindy has also served on the town’s parks and recreation board for 14 years.

Dr. Bill Crawford Dr. Bill Crawford, Vice President for Student Affairs, continues to serve a two-year term as President of the Western Region Council on Black American Affairs (WRCBAA), a regional body of the National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA), which is an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Additionally, Bill is president elect of NCBAA and will transition to the presidency in July 2012.

Sharon Fagan serves as the Executive Board Officer for the Arizona English Teachers Association. She also serves as the Education Committee and British Scholarship Liaison for International English-Speaking Union (Phoenix Branch); and as the Lead of English Language Arts Consortium for the ASU Teaching Foundation Project (US Department of Education Grant for Elementary Education).

Cesar E. Chavez Educator of the Year by the Si Se Puede Foundation

Dr. Linda Lujan

CGCC President Dr. Linda Lujan was recognized as a Cesar E. Chavez Educator of the Year by the Si Se Puede Foundation at a dinner on March 31, 2012.

An excerpt from her nomination is as follows - “Dr. Lujan is a mentor and role model to young women. She can relate to having a busy, demanding family and balancing the time required for classroom, study time, and family time. She serves as a full-time administrator with dignity, grace, and leadership. Dr. Lujan freely shares her personal story as an adult re-entry student who juggled home, school, and work in order to inspire and motivate other women to continue their educational journey.”

Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery Award

Congratulations to CGCC music faculty Dr. J. Edmund Hughes, who was honored on October 4, 2011, at the Mayor’s Breakfast with the Arts, an annual awards ceremony hosted by the Town of Gilbert, the Higley Center for the Performing Arts, and Gilbert Public Schools.

Dr. Hughes was the recipient of the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery Award, which recognizes those in the Arts field who have provided the community with services enabling an expansion in the scope and quality of the Arts. The Mayor’s Breakfast with the Arts was created to honor those who have supported arts and arts education in Gilbert.

Gilbert Community Excellence Awards

Philosophy faculty Dr. Darien Ripple and former Dean of Community Affairs Marybeth Mason were honored in

November at the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence Awards.

Dr. Darien Ripple, Philosophy Faculty

Dr. Darien Ripple was recognized as “CGCC Educator of the Year.” An excerpt from his nomination is as follows: “CGCC Philosophy faculty Dr. Darien Ripple is an expert in both Philosophy and Sustainability, and his passion in these areas is evident both in and out of the classroom. In 2009, Darien developed the college’s Certificate in Sustainability and Ecological Literacy, which serves to enhance students’ understanding of sustainable living practices associated with economics, equity and the environment. An advocate of experiential learning, Darien challenges his students to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to their everyday lives.

Each summer for the past 6 years, Darien has hosted a study abroad program to Belize in which students have the opportunity to gain a better understanding and awareness of international politics, environmental sustainability, and cultural diversity.

Marybeth Mason, Former Dean of Community Affairs

Marybeth Mason was recognized as “CGCC Staff Member of the Year.” An excerpt from her nomination is as follows: “ Marybeth Mason began her career at CGCC more than 20 years ago. In every role, whether as a faculty member, Faculty Development Coordinator, Interim Dean of Academic Affairs, or in her role as CGCC’s Dean of Community Affairs, she has always gone above and beyond in her commitment to students and the college. Her passion has always been student success and her goals are focused on improving the learning experiences of students in and out of the classroom. When other colleges were struggling with enrollment management, Marybeth took the lead on CGCC’s “Every Student Counts” initiative. Through this project, Marybeth brought a cross section of the college together and created a new awareness that it is every employee’s role to be committed to student enrollment and student success.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Basketball Classic Diversity Award

Jesus Chaidez Hernandez

Congratulations to Jesus Chaidez Hernandez, Coordinator of Student Recruitment, who was named as the CGCC recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Award in January, at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Classic. Each year, the CGCC Athletic Department honors an employee who consistently promotes inclusiveness and diversity at the college.

An excerpt from Jesus’ nomination is as follows: Jesus Chaidez Hernandez, Coordinator of Student Recruitment & Orientation at Chandler-Gilbert Community College plays a significant role in creating and supporting environments that allow for students of all backgrounds to come together for one purpose - focus on life and success. Over the past 12 years, Jesus has worked with community leaders, college faculty & staff, as well as students of all ages to integrate activities on college campuses that stimulate social diversity, and intellectual and moral growth among all students.

Maricopa Institute for Learning FellowshipDr. Darien Ripple

Dr. Darien Ripple was selected as a 2011-2012 Maricopa Institute for Learning Fellow to research Experiential Learning and Environmental Sustainability.

The Maricopa Institute for Learning (MIL) is a fellowship program for full-time faculty in any discipline who are interested in examining significant issues in their teaching fields. Participants will contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning by developing classroom research projects that: investigate how and under what conditions student learning can be fostered; can be tested with students; can be documented and made public; are relevant to and extend the scholarship of teaching and learning in a discipline; and have implications beyond an individual classroom. The program’s secondary purpose is to create a community of scholars that will engage in conversations about the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Wendy Bryant

Wendy Bryant is a dedicated teacher of religious studies courses and an active participant in faculty development activities. She has attended Reflection, Renewal and Role events, and her contributions to conversations on such topics as academic rigor and discovering meaning in the words “Every Student Counts” prove that she is a teacher who is thoughtful and artful about choices she makes related to teaching and learning, and that she involves her whole self in her teaching. She is genuinely concerned about student success and making education relevant for her students.

Promoting Excellence in Arizona Middle School Mathematics: Increasing Student Achievement through Systemic

Instructional Change

In the largest grant ever given to a community college project, the National Science Foundation has awarded $8.7 million that will fund a project in which three of the Maricopa Community Colleges – Scottsdale (as the lead), Chandler-Gilbert, and Glendale Community Colleges will create and deliver professional development workshops that will support middle school teachers in advancing their knowledge about the teaching and learning of mathematics.

The project, “Promoting Excellence in Arizona Middle School Mathematics: Increasing Student Achievement through Systemic Instructional Change,” will benefit six Valley middle school districts: Deer Valley, Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Chandler, Florence, and J.O. Combs school districts, as well as the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community schools. The new NSF-funded partnership will involve 300 in-service middle school math teachers, 32 middle school math teacher-leaders, 40 middle school administrators and 140 pre-service middle school teachers (current education majors at the community colleges). Supporting partners are Arizona State University, Maricopa Community College District, and the Glendale, Mesa, and Peoria school districts. The partnership will impact a total of 24,000 students in grades 5-8.

Bridging Cultures to Form a Nation: Difference, Community, and Democratic Thinking

CGCC was selected as one of 10 colleges nationwide to participate in the Bridging Cultures grant, sponsored by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).

Supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and co-sponsored by AAC&U and The Democracy Commitment, Bridging Cultures to Form a Nation: Difference, Community, and Democratic Thinking, will build campus capacity for more effective forms of civic learning through the humanities.

Teams from each college will participate in the three-year curriculum and faculty development project, which is designed to: •Infuse questions about difference, engaged community, and democratic thinking into transfer courses in the humanities•Promote greater adoption of proven high-impact practices that advance important civic learning outcomes•Create a series of humanities-enriched professional development opportunities for community college faculty, especially adjunct faculty•Expand the project’s impact through collaboration with additional community colleges and partnerships with state humanities councils

President’s Medal for Social Embeddedness

Sharon Fagan was part of a team that received The President’s Medal for Social Embeddedness from Arizona State University. Recipients of this award must have demonstrated excellence in fostering mutually-supportive partnerships with the community to identify a community need and to co-create and implement a solution that leads to positive social change in the community and in the research, teaching, and service practices of ASU.

Valley of the Sun United Way Campaign

This year’s CGCC Valley of the Sun United Way Campaign raised contributions totaling $20,396. United Way supports many health and human services programs and nonprofits that provide vital support to children, teens, seniors, individuals, and families in crisis in our communities. Thanks to all employees who gave. Your gifts make the difference in the lives of so many throughout the Valley.
