Best Wishes,

Dr. Jochen Etzel

Dear Readers,

Each day, as I interact with both colleagues and business partners on an international scale, I am reminded of the fact that our company has roots in a number of different cultures. However, our global presence alone cannot set us apart from our competitors. It is our devoted employees and their commitment to our core values that makes us a distinctive company within a world-wide marketplace.

We have created a workplace culture in which our corporate beliefs are held close to the heart of every employee. In this issue of DRIVEN you’ll see how these values have permeated our company goals, behaviors and performance standards.

The ContiTireAward is a prime example of employee excellence, teamwork and competitive spirit. The award recognition began in 2007 to show appreciation of highly successful projects within the Tire Division. In 2012, all records were broken with a total of 354 global nominations – outnumbering the 2011 submissions by 109. All of those who participated in the award process have made notable contributions to the future success of the company.

You’ll also read about the implementation of Continental’s global Customer Relationship Management (CRM) project

within Mexico. This process has opened communication channels with our customers, standardizing documentation and allowing all business decisions to be made faster and more effectively.

A profile on Francisco Martin Altamirano Nieto, national accounts manager for Mexico, CVT, details another view of success through transparent cooperation and competitive spirit. Francisco has developed a strong foothold for Continental in the Mexican fleet business through his relationship and benchmarking performance with Pepsi.

You’ll see that no matter the story, it is clear that our employees are the key differentiating factor between us and our global competitors. We truly are a world-class team. I thank each and every one of our CTA employees for your hard work and dedication. You are the foundation to our company’s success!

E Corporate Values In ActionDRIVEN presented Continental Tire the Americas’ Brand Values in Issue 6. Our four Corporate Values are the feature subject for this issue. They reflect how we strive to work with each other, our business partners and stakeholders. In

addition to insights from our leaders, you’ll find here CTA employees recognized as “Values Performers.” All were entered in drawings for $100 gift cards.*

Competition sharpens our skills. Winning requires nothing less than our best. George Jurch, general counsel for the Americas, puts it this way: “We can deliver outstanding results through ethical professional behavior while still maintaining a burning passion to win." Philipp von Hirschheydt, executive president for Andina S.A., has seen this passion at work in his Ecuadorian Export Sales Team: “They were able to grow sales

over the last months in declining markets while always looking for new opportunities. We not only recovered — we grew our market share!” Finally, Meletis Xigakis, general manager for Canada, on the passion he has seen in Canada: “We are hungrier and more willing to go the extra step.”

We strengthen our vitality and sustainability by granting the greatest possible freedom to Continental employees early on in their careers, and by encouraging them to act on that freedom at every stage thereafter. After all, there is no innovation without a team that feels free to innovate. “Freedom to Act,” says Carmen O'Neil, manager raw material purchasing for the Americas, “is the freedom to make a difference. In our purchasing group, we are faced daily with

situations that require us to take action. We proactively look for opportunities to improve costs and processes and find solutions to upcoming risks.” Benny Harmse, vice president of manufacturing at the Mount Vernon plant, agrees: “Freedom to Act gives employees the independence to suggest ideas rather than just follow instructions.” Finally, a word from Pedro Matos, Camaçari Plant Manager in Brazil: “Our company gives people the chance to make decisions in a decentralized way, enabling us to decide better and faster than our competitors.”

Reliable performance is the basis for all of our efforts, a prerequisite for our success. It is only by trusting ourselves and placing our trust in others that we can build constructive teamwork. In fact, Jens Harneit, director supply chain management for the Americas, sees trust as a foundation value: “In my area, supply chain, we work with the sales teams and the plants very closely. It’s a complex environment where no single person can control all factors. Trust is the key.” Marco Rabe, director of PLT quality management for

the Americas, agrees. “Just like Quality, we depend on Trust as the foundation of our success. If we take shortcuts that compromise this value, it can prove painfully costly. Trust takes years to regain again.” And Erasmo Garduño, SLP tire plant manager, points out that the decision to trust other people springs from self-confidence. “Looking inward, it is imperative first and foremost to have trust in ourselves in order to be successful!”

Rick Ledsinger - Vice President, Human Resources Continental, The Americas

George Jurch - General Counsel, The Americas

Carmen O'Neil - Manager Raw Material Purchasing, The Americas

Jens Harneit - Director Supply Chain Management, The Americas

United, we stand up for and rely on each other. “The strength of our success,” says Rick Ledsinger, vice

president of human resources for Continental the Americas, “is in the willingness of our diverse workforce to share their knowledge, expertise and experiences.” Tim Rogers, vice president of finance for Continental the Americas, points out that, at Continental, “the whole is

more than merely the sum of its parts.” Raymond Haidar sees it as a kind of family,

“where different roles with different responsibilities coexist for the ultimate good of all.” For Maria Pavlopoulos, strategic marketing manager for the Americas, this family spans the globe: “I have seen and been a part of teams (many times virtual, regardless of geography or department) that got together to solve a problem or implement something new.” PLT business unit controller for the Americas, Todd Pearce sums it all up: “I am very lucky to work at Continental Tire, a place where we support and care for one another, where good teamwork yields quick and solid results.”

Barnesville, GeorgiaThese Georgians are twisting and weaving their way to approximately 36 million pounds of tire cord fabric every year

Barnesville, Georgia, home to our Aldora Mills plant, is a small town gem that was once dubbed the “Buggy Capital of the South.” The town’s nickname comes from its prominent manufacturing history of, well, buggies. Although the times of unchallenged buggy production are long gone, Barnesville continues to celebrate its heritage every September with a festival known as Buggy Days. This fun-filled family event includes a parade, street dance, crafts and lots of delicious southern-style food.

Today, the city of Barnesville accepts the fact that horsepower has replaced horse-drawn in terms of transportation. In fact, the largest employer in the area is Continental, with a workforce of over 200 employees at its Aldora Mills plant. Here, the employees manage the machines that twist and weave approximately 36 million pounds of tire cord fabric for Continental’s PLT lineup each year.

All of this takes place in an 888,000 square foot facility known as Aldora Mills. This year marks a commemorative 125 year anniversary for the plant, which was originally built by a cotton processor. The looms that were once used to weave raw cotton into hose duck and other heavy-duty textiles eventually began to produce tire cord. This quickly became the sole output for the facility.

General Tire would later buy the Aldora Mills plant in 1930, setting the stage for Continental’s acquisition in 1989.

Although the Mills has a longstanding history, plant manager Terry Graham prefers to look toward the future, “We continue to search for improvements that will keep our plant competitive. Our most important asset, however, is our workforce. We really value the employees who make and sell our product, ensuring that every pound of tire cord fabric is the very best in the world.”

Twist: The twisting process occurs when two or three strands of yarn are twisted together to form cable cord

Weave: Next, the weaving of the fabric takes place on state-of-the-art looms

Creels of cabled cord are woven into a sheet of fabric using a cotton polyester filling

Treat: Treating is the process where the greige fabric is coated with a latex coating and stretched to a precise width to be used in the tire building process

Once treated, the fabric is wrapped and shipped to Continental plants worldwide

The Story: A serious matter was at hand when Original Equipment (OE) had stopped quoting for future Light Truck (LT) tires. This setback was brought on by some problems with the endurance performance of Continental’s LT tires resulting in a big recall in 2011.

Due to design, quality and process, the Research & Development team, established the umbrella project. The cross-functional nature of the project, with members working across different departments and locations, required great communication skills and a team-oriented approach. Once implemented, the project provided a

quick and workable solution. Endurance performance improved and the plant continued with production of its existing tire lines. In addition, the team worked with the plants to develop a future platform for LT tires.

The new platform came to fruition faster than anyone on the OE side had expected. This gave Continental the ability to quote for future LT tires, which allowed CTA the opportunity to establish a highly profitable price level for LT tires in OE.

The Story:Radial CVT technology was introduced to the Cuenca plant shortly before the acquisition in 2009. Task force “Cuenca: Readiness for Conti Brand Production” started in October 2011 with cooperative participation from Hanover. The challenge was to improve production quality and process stability in order to meet the requirements for production of Continental branded Truck tires.

To reach the defined minimum requirements, the project team centered their efforts on improving quality, increasing process stability and implementing new equipment effectively. Based on

the quality improvement in the production process and the performance of test tires, production was started in July 2012 — six months ahead of the original estimate.

For the first half of 2011, Cuenca was rated last among CTA plants. By July of 2012, Cuenca was running better than the global average, with an upward trend towards further improvement. These high quality standards have been achieved using current machinery with marginal investments for upgrades and new equipment. The plant’s premium products have become a worthy part of Continental’s radial truck tire portfolio.

Francisco Martin Altamirano Nieto is one man who really does it all. As a national accounts manager for Continental’s Mexico fleet business, Francisco supervises the work of sales executives for each region, deals directly with his own clients, ensures customer satisfaction and coordinates all cross-departmental efforts. With a schedule as busy as this, it is no wonder that most people do not know that he can also sing!

Francisco began his career at Continental in January 1986, in quality assurance at Plant 1 of Cia Hulera Euzkadi. Here, Francisco had the opportunity to learn all about the tire manufacturing processes. He was later promoted to field engineering and eventually transitioned into the area of truck sales. Within this department, Francisco worked in various positions and regions, developing a key network of relationships that led him to become part of the national account management team.

Over the course of his career, the account manager has become a company role model, building a technical career that evolved into a job as a respected and effective leader.

“He has always told me, ‘Be careful with the details and be the best in what you do,’” colleague Emilio Leon Nunez, explains. “Francisco has taught me things that just aren’t taught in school.”

Some may say that it was Francisco’s fervent attention to detail that allowed him to develop a strong foothold for Continental fleet business in Mexico.

Through his work as key account manager for Pepsi, Francisco has set the benchmark for Continental’s customer care and product performance within the country.

“Francisco always works in a professional manner,” colleague Gabriela Cárdenas Cárdenas says. “He remains

in touch with the needs of his customers, providing expert advice and steady attention. By doing so, he has found solutions that improve operating costs, provide more efficient service and increase market share.”

Not only has Francisco managed to increase tire sales with Pepsi during his time as part of the national accounts management team, but he has also established a link of trust between Continental and Mexico’s key players in the fleet business.

“My job gives me the opportunity to stay in touch with the people who either influence or make the decision to purchase tires,” says Francisco. “I also work directly with individuals in the departments of quality, supply, vehicle service, maintenance and operations. That is why our company must be a solution of service, supply, quality and investment – not just tires.”

Francisco admits that this is the most challenging part of his work, as it takes a lot of manpower to ensure that the customers’ needs are met at all times. The efforts of different people in different locations and departments must all be aligned in order to get the job done.

But amidst the challenges of his job, Francisco finds reward. “The best part of my job is the interaction with my coworkers,” he says. “We are fortunate to have a warm, pleasant and harmonious environment at Continental. Our company demands everyone’s best work, but at the same time we have a strong support system in the team.”

For the fifth year, Continental will hit the road with a mobile marketing tour that brings its capabilities to life. This year’s efforts feature a brand new 53-foot trailer, complete with products and interactive displays.

Named for its “full circle” approach to increasing value to customers throughout the life cycle of their tire investments, the Conti360 Tour vehicle debuted at the 2013 Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville, Kentucky.

The 2013 tour focuses on Continental’s brand philosophy of delivering the “Lowest Overall Driving Costs” to fleets large and small. “The Conti360 Tour is about more than just tires, thanks to the added value of our automotive divisions that cover chassis and safety, interior and powertrain, plus our ContiTech partners in the rubber group,” said Alex Chmiel, CVT brand and communications manager.

“Continental impacts approximately 30% more of a fleet’s operating costs than tire-only manufacturers, thanks to our company’s full range of products and services that address safety, economy and environmental factors,” Chmiel said.

Once inside, visitors are immediately encompassed by a layout and lighting design that aims for a dramatic effect that pulls the viewer from each interactive feature to the next.

Chmiel said visitors were “extremely impressed” and understood for the first time the true scope of Continental’s capabilities after touring the Conti360 Vehicle.

The vehicle will continue its road trip throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, appearing at major trade events and visiting fleets in key markets. Last year’s tour alone included more than 200 fleet visits.

The CVT marketing team created the Conti360 tour vehicle from a hand drawn sketch to the reality of a full-size truck and trailer.

The truck’s satin graphite finish with bright “Conti yellow” accents blends seamlessly

with the trailer’s brand message.

Race Winners Count on ContinentalRolex 24 Recap

Whatever pulses through the minds of performance drivers at the moment they start their engines – the weather forecast, track position, the competitors on either side – the last thing they can afford to worry about is the tires that will carry them around the track.

That’s why winners want Continental tires, especially when they compete in a 24-hour endurance race like the Rolex 24 At Daytona at Florida’s Daytona International Speedway.

At this year’s 51st running of the event, driver Scott Pruett took home his fifth career Rolex 24 win on Continental tires, with the help of his Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates teammates, Memo Rojas, Charlie Kimball and Juan Pablo Montoya, in the Daytona Prototype (DP) Class. The win ties Hurley Haywood for most wins by a driver at the storied race. The No. 01 BMW topped the podium with the No. 10 Velocity WW Corvette in second and No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ford in third.

The Daytona track is unique due to its high banked corners and vehicle speeds, which create conditions that require tires to endure

relatively “high downforce loads.” Rain tires weren’t needed during this year’s event, but debris and car-to-car contact took its toll on some teams. Repaved in 2010, the smoother surface of the track produces relatively little wear, which means high tread temperatures.

As daylight faded and the track cooled, teams began to double stint on their Continental tires. Later, drivers applauded Continental for its durable tires, which could be counted on for a performance that kept them out front.

“[The tires were] consistent throughout the whole run and I think I did my fastest lap three laps from the end,” said Jordan Taylor, driver of the No. 10 Corvette. “It’s nice to have a tire like that where you can push it the whole way through the stint and the fuel load is what matters now. So as the car gets lighter, you go faster.”

At Friday night’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series (CTSCCS), the Roush Fenway duo of Billy Johnson and Jack Roush Jr. claimed their second consecutive win in the BMW Performance 200. Driving the No. 61 Roush Performance Mustang, the team edged out competitors by 1.812 seconds for the win in the Grand Sport (GS) Class. In the Street Tuner (ST) class, Lara Tallman became the first female CTSCCS winner since 2011 with the help of co-driver Vesko Kozarov.

Adding to the excitement, GRAND-AM standout drivers Ozz Negri and Ryan Eversley gave a behind-the-scenes look to fans when they hijacked Continental Tire’s Twitter account. During a lengthy fog caution early Sunday morning, Eversley began a ten-minute session of what may well have been the first live Twitter Q&A from inside a race car. CTA’s social media efforts, combined with other Twitter enthusiasts at the event, made “#Rolex24” the number one trending Twitter topic in America from the onset of the race well into the next day.

An Army of TrucksContinental Tire loads up 17 trailers to transport 12,000 tires to the race (8,000 slicks and 4,000 rain tires) – about

four times the number required for any other race weekend. Not every tire will be used, but all conditions must be anticipated.

Give Me Two MinutesContinental sets up three processing lines for the weekend. The CTA trackside service crew dismount, mount and balance a tire in approximately two minutes, start to finish.

Speeding PenaltyAt peak demand, CTA's trackside service crew will process 200+ tires per hour.

Continental has always known a lot about its customers. But, until recently, this knowledge was bundled away and compartmentalized into separate business units and departments. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) changes all that.

Already implemented in Western Europe, Canada and the United States, CRM@Conti breaks down these barriers in communication by putting the individual customer at the center of information flow. Those who are authorized to deal with customers have access to all of the information that reflects their relationship with Continental — purchases and payments, sales activities, complaints, complaint resolutions, communications from the company and more. The end goal for Continental is to utilize this information in a way that will attract customers, keep them satisfied and encourage repeat business.

As of February 2013, CRM@Conti is up and running in Mexico City. According to Andy Slattery, regional sales manager, Southeast, the system will not only help all Mexico City business units know their customers better, but also improve the sales process by streamlining and opening the flow of customer information. Slattery can attest to this since he previously served as project lead for North America, implementing the CRM project in the U.S. and Canada.

“Customer requests,” says Mario Guzman, product planning manager, “are dealt with in a more swift and accurate manner because all the information required is located in one central place.”

“It is completely new for our market,” Guzman says. “In the past all visit reports, calls, mail and meeting minutes were kept in the form of Word documents or Lotus Notes mail without a standard format. The flow of communication also varied in terms of which sales managers were provided with the information. Now with the new CRM application, all of the information has a standard format and can be sent to those who are involved with the customer, regardless of business unit or group. This gives us a 360 degree view of the customer.”

What’s more, all salespeople can now check their sales directly through the CRM system at any time as well as personally customize their reports. Before CRM, salespeople could only get reports once or twice a day.

Two months into the program, Guzman reports that the Mexico City team is making more knowledgeable sales decisions at a faster pace.

Constant flow of up-to-date information is key to Customer Relationship Management.
