The University of Missouri–St. Louis’ annual Distinguished Contributors booklet is our way ofhighlighting the support and contributions of our many generous and dedicated donors.

In this publication, we present the university’s accomplishments and inform its readers of the role our supporters play in helping us to reach those accomplishments. We focus on our community partnerships, our special landmarks, our traditional allies and our new friends.

This year, we are celebrating one huge accomplishment and preparing to mark an important milestone.

First, the accomplishment: UMSL recently concluded its Gateway for Greatness campaign, surpassing our goal of $150 million. The successful conclusion of this campaign is a triumph weall can share. However, I’d like to single out one group that I want to thank: the men and womenwho work under the leadership of Martin Leifeld, vice chancellor for University Advancement. The Gateway for Greatness campaign would not have been a success without their hard work and dedication.

Now, the milestone: Next year, we will celebrate the university’s 50th anniversary. The University of Missouri–St. Louis formally opened its doors on Sept. 15, 1963. Offices, departments, schoolsand colleges are planning their participation in the university’s Jubilee Celebration. Announcementsconcerning the individual events of the 50th Anniversary Jubilee are forthcoming. I hope you all willfind a way to join the celebration.

For as much as you have helped in the successful Gateway for Greatness campaign, you have certainly played a major part in the university’s reaching this anniversary. Congratulations andthank you very much.

Gateway for Greatness Campaign Chairman

The college experience is about self-improvement and creating opportunities for a betterand more fulfilling life. That’s exactly what the University of Missouri–St. Louis did for me.I learned a lot about myself, and the education I received made a positive difference in mycareer options.

I joined the Gateway for Greatness campaign to support an institution that has meant somuch to my family and me, but also to ensure other people have a chance to get a terrificeducation in St. Louis and build a great career.

A little less than a decade ago the leadership of Express Scripts decided to retain its head-quarters in St. Louis. We received offers to relocate. Some of those offers were outstanding,but we decided to build in St. Louis.

Working with state, local and university officials, Express Scripts built its headquarters onthe UMSL campus and added new facilities in the nearby NorthPark business development.

Our partnership with the university and community is working. But it will only keepworking if companies and organizations such as ours can continue to recruit outstandingtalent – particularly homegrown talent that’s committed to the region.

The success of the Gateway for Greatness campaign ensures that UMSL will continue toprovide a majority of that homegrown talent. The university’s alumni base and impact onindividual St. Louisans is unmatched.

I’m proud to be an UMSL alumnus. Prouder still to be an UMSL supporter.

Businessman seeks to provide hope to othersthrough giving

Wayne S. DeVeydt has a simple explanation for supporting the College of Business Administration of the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

“Hope,” DeVeydt says. “Hope that someoneelse will have the opportunity that I did notthink I would ever get. Hope that UMSL willhelp someone else believe in themselves asmuch as UMSL believed in me and challengedme to be something bigger in life.”

DeVeydt graduated from UMSL in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in business administrationwith an emphasis in accounting. He is executive vice president and chief financialofficer for WellPoint, a health benefits firmbased in Indianapolis, Ind. He became the company’s chief financial officer in May 2007,and is responsible for overseeing the financialoperations associated with its $60 billion inannual revenues.

There was a time in his life when DeVeydt wasn’t sure he could become the success he is today. Then he found his way to the College of Business Administration at UMSL.

“I originally started at another campus, but found that I could not get as much direct interaction with the faculty or getclear career guidance or advice,” DeVeydt says. “I decided to attend UMSL, which provided an opportunity to interact with the faculty much more frequently and provided a much more intimate interaction with local employers.”

Business magazine, Institutional Investor, voted DeVeydt Best Managed Care CFO for 2012. This was the third time he hasbeen recognized by the international publication, also having received the honor in 2008 and 2011.

He said it was the challenging nature of the education he received at UMSL that led to his successful career.

“I actually found that while I was at UMSL, I was more engaged in my education than I had been in either high school or early college,” DeVeydt said. “I enjoy problem solving and I found that UMSL made education more about ‘real-life application’ and problem solving. As a result, I was personally more engaged and saw value in the education I was receiving.”

And now, he and his family help to pass that value along to others.

Monsanto support of UMSL project continueshistorical commitment

The University of Missouri–St. Louis recently made a significant step to expand its outreach efforts with the opening of UMSL at Grand Center. The center was enhanced with a $1 million gift to the university from Monsanto Company.

The company’s participation in the project was in keeping with its historical commitment to community service, said Deborah Patterson, president of Monsanto Fund.

“Monsanto has a long history of giving back to the communities in which ouremployees live and work,” she said. “With this grant, we wanted to be active participants in making our community stronger and enhance the already fantasticeducation students receive from UMSL.”

The Monsanto Community Education Center is located on the first floor of the new UMSL at Grand Center building. The center will offer classes and programming in the city’s arts and entertainment district and includes a newhome for the studios and offices of St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU. The building was completed in June.

“In the St. Louis area, Monsanto is focused on supporting key civic projects that invigorate and transform the region, likeUMSL’s Grand Center project,” said Patterson, who earned a master’s degree in political science from UMSL in 1976. “We are also committed to improving education and providing students with the best opportunities available to receive a top-notch education.”

“Supporting scholarships and projects such as UMSL at Grand Center is good for Monsanto, too,” she added.

“This great city is more than just Monsanto’s company headquarters – it is where we raise our families and spend time withfriends,” Patterson said. “Being part of the community is who we are, and it’s a value we embrace. We recognize that UMSLplays a crucial role in the vitality of the region. A strong UMSL means a better quality of life for citizens in the region,including Monsanto employees.”

Deborah Patterson is president of Monsanto Fund, which supports higher education in St. Louis.

Couple feels the need to repay alumnus’ success

Patrick J. Chunn says earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration in1987 from the University of Missouri–St. Louis has ultimately led to the attainmentof college educations for every member of his nuclear family. Chunn said that as ayoung man he was drawn to UMSL by its educational quality. “I was interested inpublic accounting, and they have an excellent program,” he said.

“Since receiving my BSBA from UMSL, members of my immediate family and Ihave also achieved a CPA, a CMA, four more undergraduate degrees, two MBAs andnext year, a law degree,” Chunn said. “Those were all made possible by my degreeat UMSL.”

Chunn is chief financial officer of Hospital Physician Partners, a medical manage-ment firm based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He began his career at the accounting firmErnst & Young, as a health care auditor.

He and his wife Christina have three children, all now adults with college degreesof their own. The Chunns are so appreciative of what Patrick’s UMSL degree hasmade possible they have made a substantial commitment to support scholarships atthe university.

“We set up a scholarship fund that targets gifted high school students who need help financially with their college tuition,”he said. In addition to giving to scholarships at UMSL, the Chunns made a gift to the planned new facility for the College of Business Administration.

“The university has some latitude with how it disperses the scholarship funds, whatever UMSL thinks is the best use of themoney,” he said. “UMSL has done a great deal for my family and me, the City of St. Louis and many employers in the St.Louis area.”

A recent visit to the UMSL campus left him inspired and hopeful. “My wife and I took a campus tour recently, and therewere many improvements to the look and feel of the campus,” Chunn said. “I think the new business building will make apositive impact. It is long overdue.”

Global firm works to support localwork force

Executives at Enterprise Holdings Inc. have worked since its inception to make the company an engaged corporate citizen that makes a real difference in the communities it serves. That was the impetus for a new scholarship fund the company established at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

EHI is the largest rental car company in the world. Based in St. Louis, itoperates the Enterprise Rent-a-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo RentA Car brands.

Tony Moise, vice president and general manager for EHI’s St. Louis operation, is currently in his second three-year term on the Chancellor’sCouncil at UMSL. Moise has hired a number of UMSL graduates, and hesees the new Enterprise Opportunity Driver Scholarship Program in theCollege of Business Administration as an important way for Enterpriseto help the St. Louis community in a sweeping way.

“Our work with local civic organizations, area schools and communitygroups has really helped us come to the conclusion that our region willthrive if more people have the opportunity to succeed,” Moise said.

The Enterprise Opportunity Driver Scholarship was endowed through EHI’s philanthropic arm, the Enterprise HoldingsFoundation. Announced last fall, the program has three key components: scholarships for full-time undergraduate studentsfrom low- or moderate-income families pursuing degrees in the business college; stipends for junior- and senior-level students who will mentor freshman and sophomore recipients; and opportunities for recipients to compete for internships.

The creation of these scholarships was seen as crucial to helping build a 21st century work force for St. Louis. Andy Taylor,Enterprise chairman and CEO, and Jo Ann Taylor Kindle, president of the Enterprise Holdings Foundation, were directlyinvolved in the program’s development.

“Our goal is to see more people complete their degrees and move on to a successful career, hopefully in the St. Louisregion,” Moise said. “We believe that the fundamentals of a business education are universal, and a sound business understanding can prepare students to achieve in many fields.”

Alumni couple supports others seeking education at UMSL

Linda and Michael Finkes both hold degrees from the Universityof Missouri–St. Louis, and they want to help others do the same. They are both native St. Louisans. Michael Finkes holds abachelor’s (1973) and a master’s (1978) degree in chemistry.Linda (nee Bagley) Finkes graduated from UMSL in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Linda and Michael have made UMSL scholarships a part of theirestate planning. They also support a chemistry scholarship at theuniversity. A recipient of the scholarship once shared with themwhat the scholarship meant to her.

“She told us that our scholarship meant she could work four less hours per week at a restaurant — that’s four hours more she could study,” Michael said.

That was particularly important to Linda and Michael, both ofwhom say that helping student succeed motivates their support of UMSL.

“We are trying to lighten two burdens that students face,” Michael said. “Those burdens are the need to work whileattending UMSL and debt accumulation. We don’t want to see a student saddled with a lot of debt after they graduate.”

Michael Finkes is a retired chemist, who spent 37 years at Monsanto Co. where he still works part time. Following graduation, Linda Finkes went on to become a legal assistant. From 1978-2008, she was the surety bond claims manager for National Bonding and Accident.

The Finkeses attribute their success, in large part, to the degrees they earned at UMSL. They say the university was therefor them at just the right time with the type of quality education to accommodate their circumstances.

“When we were looking at colleges, there was UMSL in our own neighborhood,” Michael said. “It turned out to be anexcellent choice.”

Linda and Michael Finkes both hold degrees from UMSL and support scholarships at UMSL so others may attain success.

Character education here and abroadis focus of two kindred spirits

Two years ago, HT Cho, the former CEO of mobile phone manufacturerHTC, decided to visit the St. Louis area to get a firsthand look at charactereducation in the United States. Cho is the founder and chairman of theHTC Foundation, the charitable arm of the HTC Corporation based in Taiwan.

“The HTC Foundation has served in Taiwan as a character education partner with schools and school administrators for several years,” Cho said in an email interview. “One of our practices is to provideopportunities in training and development to the adults, as well as students, so the school may become a caring school community andbegin to implement character education in the right way.”

Marvin Berkowitz is the Sanford N. McDonnell Endowed Professor ofCharacter Education and co-director of the center at UMSL. He regularlygets requests from educators and civic leaders to explore what the centerdoes. “Mr. Cho came to me and wanted to consult with me about thework of the center and possibly duplicating in Taiwan what we do here,” said Berkowitz. The Center for Character and Citizenship engages inresearch, education and advocacy to foster the development of character,democratic citizenship and civil society. It generates and disseminatesknowledge and research pertaining to how individuals develop moraland civic character.

In 2010, the HTC Foundation brought a group of educators from Taiwanto visit several National Schools of Character in the St. Louis area withhelp from Marvin Berkowitz. The group learned from ProfessorBerkowitz about the Center for Character and Citizenship at UMSL. The Taiwanese educators spent a week observing the work of the center.A year later, Cho visited the center himself.

The relationship continued to grow when in November 2011 ProfessorBerkowitz visited the foundation while lecturing and consulting inChina. In August 2012 Berkowitz returned to Taiwan to train leadershipteams from five schools supported by the HTC Foundation. Eventually,

the foundation agreed to provide substantial support for the work of the Center for Character and Citizenship at UMSL andto establish a Leadership Academy for Character Education in Taiwan.

Professor Berkowitz said that when he first met HT Cho he found himself talking to a kindred spirit. “Mr. Cho asked mewhat I wanted to do in life,” explains Berkowitz. “I told him, ‘I want to make a better world. If you want a better world,make better citizens. If you want to make better citizens, make better children. That’s what I’m all about.’ “He looked meright in the eye and said, ‘That’s what I want to do, too,’” Berkowitz said. “Mr. Cho is a remarkable man.”
