    ARIZONA SMALLBORE SPRING MADNESS MATCHES.

15 SmallBore Matches for the ARIZONA spring Madness season Feb. 24, - March 25, 2012This will be the start of what will be 5 weekends of championship matches.

Phoenix SmallBore Series- which started @ PRGC [Phx Rod & Gun Club] with theTarantula a 4800 Metric Prone SmallBore match. Then, the annual Road Runner3200 Conventional Prone - again @ P.R.G.C.

Next, Ben Avery for the Diamond Back 3200 Conventional Prone Regional -sponsored by Desert Sharpshooters. Then, the Western Wildcat 6400ConventionalProne, ending our SmallBore Madness with the ASRPA {AZ State Rifle & PistolAssociation} State 3200 Conventional Prone SmallBore finale.

Traveling shootershave gathered in Phoenix for the Western Wildcatprone SBmatch, starting on March 14, 2012, with the team match and the "Made in America"match. The real competition begins on day 1 (Iron sights) of this 4 day match. This

looks to be one of the best attended Wildcat matches in a decade. Haven Williams, match director, told the group last Saturday that he already had 87 paid entries, andthought he would fill all 100 firing positions by Monday.

SmallBore enthusiasts are practiced & ready to compete in the various classesagainst what we know will be a tough competition.

Last year competitors had to shoot high 1580s to win any match in the expert class, and 1600/+High Xs to win in the master class, as the conditions were perfect.

    Competition #1, Feb.24-27,2012, Tarantula 4800 metric @ P.R.G.C.

Many competitors were not pleased with scores generated @ the 4 day Tarantula4800 metric (who was?). While we tend to blame alot of it on the windy conditions,AMMO, ETC; the fact that we have not been shooting SmallBore prone much, shouldbe the real excuse. The first three days we had very nice weather. Mornings were liteon light. Getting used to looking into the southern SUN, later in the afternoon provedto be a challenge, as the match progressed scores jumped up. Then Monday came likethe wind had been saved up for this day, Mother Nature unleashed the winds! Wow, itbecame challenging to say the least. We kept breaks short & pushed hard to get donebefore the afternoons 45 MPH winds forecasted came up. Whew! Just in time!

Peter Church (MA) pulled it together enough to slay some more national metricrecords. Great scores held and he became the #1st match winner (MW). Thanks forallowing me the pleasure of filling out the necessary NRA forms to report your records.Masters are always very competitive, as Virginia McLemore(EX) proved as #2nd MW,with some great scores and xs!! Richard Layton (EX) stepped up to the challenge &followed as #3rd MW. Mick Walker (EX) pulled it together for the 1st expert with goodscores. Frank Fisher (EX) was high senior. We were all getting our SmallBore gamefaces on, improving score and Xs as the match progressed. Jim Evenson (EX)

finished as #2nd EX. Steven Perez shot unclassified as a master and was our onlyjunior and shot one day. John Andres shot F-Class and was #1ST MW in the F-Classcategory.

Great scores and a good slow start for the SmallBore season ahead.

NOTE:We had an ISSUE thats worth noting. My attemptto explain; The

ISSUE is looking into the SUN @ PRGC and not being able to see a good sightpicture. To help alleviate the sun bleeding thru on the target bulls, all

competitors were given the right to place another backer behind the target.

This helped. Many believe it was due to thinner paper being used on the

targets that added to the problem. Next year we will announce and include

into the program the option for adding another backer for all who feel this

    will help alleviate this problem

Mick W. Walker P.R.G.C. SmallBore Director.

    Competition #2 March 3 & 4, 2012 Road Runner 3200 Conventional SmallBoreProne @ P.R.G.C. Phx Rod & Gun Club.

The Road Runner 3200 @ P.R.G.C. had a great start with 21 competitors. Theweather continues to be kind, with cooler temperatures, and nice soft morning winds.Scores were reflected in this great match, ending the winter season, entering theSpring March SmallBore Madness. There will be no excuses for not having greatscores, indeed which is what happened. The match was fought hard. Scores higherthan the Tarantula 4800 Metric, this is what a metric will produce tighter scores andXs. Virginia McLemore, shooting as a Master was #1

    st MW [Match Winner] only

loosing 4 Points!! Ken Nelson shooting the Expert class as our favorite Canadian fromRed Deer AB., came in as #2 MW losing only 7 points for both days! Zach Kofron wasbreathing down Kens neck with a good score as #3 MW. Wesley Shumaker from NMexico slid into #1 MA, and tied with Jim Cobb MA. The scorers had to go to Xs todecide who won #1MA. Mick Walker finished out as #1st EX. Jim Evenson pick up #2EX. #1ST High Jr. was Luke Harper. Jack Arnold picked up the High Senior title with agreat score considering he is wrestling with irons again. Frank Fisher, High GrandSenior. Rob Nabower #1st MK. John Andres F-Class shot a very nice score using theharder F-Class SB targets and was #1 MW for F-Class. Let us not forget the

challenge to get the NRA to recognize SmallBore F-Class. We are continuing to askthe NRA for a certified NRA sanctified F-Class categoryso we can continue to grow asHigh Powers F-Classsees growth. The RR 3200 concluded with tighter scores andXs. Great shooting SmallBore ladies & gentlemen!!! See you all @ TheDiamondback 3200 Conventional SB Prone match @ the Ben Avery, AZ Range.

    Competition #3March 10 & 11 2012,

Diamond Back 3200: Conventional SmallBore Prone @ Ben Avery.

The morning weather conditions were great for both days with just a little morningwind from 12:00 oclock keeping the flags from hanging limp. Later that afternoon thewind changed to 2:00 +- 5:00 oclock. There were wind changes and let offs that weresomething you had to watch.

Eric Sundstrom #2nd MA class 3162/207xs, Ken Nelson EX, shot HighSr. with a 3171/174xs, Frank Luceros #1st EX win and style made us think he shot likea man hungry for a win as an expert scoring a 3157/179 xs, beating out Mick Walker shealthy #2nd EX score with a 3157/156 xs. David Best from N .Mexico was high Jr.

Great score brother with a 3067/83 xs. Jack Greenleaf was high MK with a 3052/87xs. John Andres shot a nice 3121/154 xs as an F-Class SmallBore prone competitor.

Keep the challenges going to get the NRA to recognize SmallBore F-Class, We arecontinuing to ask the NRA for a Certified NRA sanctified F-Classcategory so we cancontinue to grow as High Powers F-Classsees growth.

    THE WESTERN WILDCAT 2012.

South Western SmallBore Match of the year in PHX, AZ.

The Ben Avery facility is a fantastic place to host the South Westerns SmallBoreMatch of the year in PHX, AZ. It has the biggest views of majestic desert and mountainscenery with cacti of every variation. Wednesday started the WW 6400 Match off withteam matches. It was a very nice way to start with calm weather. It proved to be agame starter due to wind changes, let offs and flags that were ever changing. The

team matches were a great way to get sighted in and familiar with Ben Avery.

The winds and weather conditions gave a hint of what could be expected of the daysahead during the Western Wildcat 6400 competition.

Almost a full line at the 2012 Western Wildcat 6400 - ABOUT 90+- COMPETITIORS!The conditions were almost perfect for day 1of the Wildcat. It was the chance youdream of for an Iron sight 1600. Bright sun, 77degrees and no humidity, 4 mph breezefrom 5 o'clock. There would be no (acceptable) excuses today.

The cast of characters was truly a whos who of the countrys elite marksman, as aperusal of the scores page will demonstrate. Past and present Olympians made the tripthis year including Lones Wigger, Eric Uptagrafft, Jamie Gray and Matt Emmons.

The Army, Air Force & the LAR&R (Los Angeles Rifle & Revolver Club) shootingteams were here as well as other top shooters from all over. Lones Wigger, JoeFarmer, Nancy Tompkins, Rea and Tarl Kempley were on the line and the Serviceteams would have plenty of competition.

Day#1: Shooters took their positions on the line as day1started very smooth. Peoplefound the squadding lists according to classifications and were progressing their waythrough the various preparation stages getting the completion started. So, against thisbackdrop, it was a pleasure to see Justin Tracy matching Jason Parker with twin1600s for the only cleans on day#1. It is nice to know that an unsupported shooter cango toe to toe with the best and have a chance of being competitive.

Battles in the other classes are worth mentioning as well. Matt Chezems 1598/128xs, proves hes ready for the competition in the HM class. Ken Nelsons 1592/113 xs

was fair for Irons on day#1.

Also, what should encourage the SmallBore competition the most is looking @ thejunior scores! The scores that are the most impressive are from the LAR&R juniorswhom are freshly anointed as shooting tops in the marksman class having shot lessthan two years. Some of these shooters were unclassified and were placed in the MKclass based on previous few matches in the short time they have been competing.Worth mentioning, are the top MKs shooters some of them being ladies. Here are afew of the top shooters. Anna Weilbacher who scored a 1589/82 xs closing in on thatmark was Matt Liao @ 1578/82 xs, Tyler Moores been shooting in Phx AZ, a little

more than a Year and shot a 1569/85 xs, and LAR&Rs Allison Villas 1553/54 xs.There will more to come from the Junior Division shooters.

So with that information noted: The F-Classers were led by Pete Sands facing offwith the F-ers @ #1 FC position with a 1598/117 xs, following Jack Arnold @ 1589/83xs, and John Andres as #3 FC with a 1581/98 xs, There were 8 competitors who ShotF-Class @ the day one opener, and if there was an NRA certification I am sure wecould grow the SmallBore, F-Class division in SmallBore.

Day#2: The weather continues with another grand and glorious day to shoot, almostperfect conditions again. There was no more than 3mph wind from 4 o'clock for the firsttwo matches, the Dewar and the 100 yd match. It was a pure holding and trigger breakcontest today, 400 scores were a dime a dozen, still only two 1600s were shot today, and those by Jamie Gray, and Erick Uptagrafft. There were some gusty reversals outof the west in the last two matches. Erick and Jamie both shot astounding1600s withJamie getting the win on tie breakers. Closing in for the #3MW Win was Joseph Hein

    6/8

with a nice 1599/148 xs. The battle did not stop there with Jason Parkers score @1599/140 xs & Chris Abalos 1599/139 xs.

Competition was tight & building up in the MA class as well with Clarence DuPuys1599/135 xs, closing in was Matt Chezems 1598/125 xs, Ron Zerrs1598/123 xs, &Stuart Linds 1598/113xs ended up as the #5thMA. In the EX class Allen Elliotts1598/105 xs was good enough for #1 EX, following Ken Nelsons 1597/116 xs, & Mick

Walkers 1595/94 xs, James Gaines 1590/94 xs #4 EX, Barney Higgins 1589/97 xs #5EX, Another up & coming Junior who is shooting EX was Luke Harper as #6 EX with agreat 1587/94 xs.

Again another great day for Juniors and the MK Class, with a lead switch as AllisonVilla was on top of the MK class with #1 MK 1584/77 xs, Mathew Liaos steady@1581/93 xs #2 MK, John Hoffman continues to be consistent with a placing of #3 MKwith a 1576/84 xs, & Hal Abels 1576/83 brings him to #4MK, and Anna W. was #5 MKwith a 1574/72 xs, anothergreat day for the MK class.

The F-Classers on #2 day was led by John Andres #1 FC 1570/80 xs, Ray DelRios1570/74 xs, Jim Murphys 1569/82 xs and Jack Chamberlains 1519/58xs.

Another note worthy of chatter is the fact that the F-Class shooters are shootingmetric targets with smaller x Rings and are not using conventional targets like we are. Thus the reason scores are lower for F-Class vs. high masters and masters.

DAY #3: Where was the wind? The weather man in Chicago and everywhere elsepromised. It was supposed to blow like crazy today. The forecast was for 20 mph windstarting in the SE and then veering around to the NW by afternoon. We all put extraclips on our target frames, but the big wind never blew in. It was windy enough so youhad to hang on to the targets when putting them up, but it did not get more than 8-10mph in the morning and maybe 12-14 in the afternoon. Even though it wassomewhat windy, it seemed the wind was really not much of a factor for day #3, 2ndiron sight match of the 4 day Wildcat 6400. The wind was steady, and there were fewreversals. It was also slightly overcast for the 1st match of the Dewar. This meant wecould see the targets better and obtain a decent sight picture.

Two high masters shot 400-40x scores. Joseph Hein and Eric Uptagrafft with Josephgetting the match win on tie breakers. Among the HM s, 4 hard holders shot clean1600 scores, Erick Uptagrafft as MW, Rea Kempley # 2 MW, Mathew Wallace as #3MW. Chris Abalo #4 HM, This was Erick Uptagrafft 2nd 1600 in two days, Joseph Hein#5 HM scored a nice 1598/148 xs, Matt Emmons #6 HM 1599/136 xs, Hank Gray #7HM with a great 1599/127 xs.

In the Expert class, Ken Nelson #1 EX continued his domination with a 1593/110 xs,Barney Higgins 1589/102 xs gave him #2 Ex, Luke Harper #3 EX, a Jr. EX 1587/84xs, & Zach Kofron EX Jr. came in @ #4 EX, John Giles @ #5 EX with a 1585/91 xs.Ken Nelson dueled it out with, Barney Higgins, and Jr. EX shooter Luke Harper all day,

    7/8

but neither one could keep up with Ken at the end or beat his 1593/110 xs to take the#1 Ex class win.

Another great day for juniors & the MK class, with a lead switch again as AnnaWeilbacherregained her #1 MK lead on day #3 with a 1585/96 xs, and was on top ofthe MK class, Mathew Liao remains steady @1579/67 xs as #2 MK, AllisonVillas1578/75 xs keeps her @ #3 MK, Tyler Moore #4 MK 1569/77 xs, and new

comer Patrick Ward from N.Mexico #5 MK 1569/57 xs, one more worthy of noting wasConner Lacy #6 MK 1567/74 xs. Great score Jrs!

The F-Classers were led again on day #3 by Pete Sands @ #1 FC position with a1597/123 xs, Jack Arnold #2 FC @ 1595/108 xs, and Ray DelRio as #3 FC with a1574/78 xs, having 7 competitors today who shot F-Class @ the Wildcat 6400 F-Class Division, thanks for supporting F-class, in PHX. AZ.

Day#4: The 2012 gathering of the Wildcat 6400 did not just fade quietly in to thenight. The storm finally came in (as predicted) on day 4. It was pouring rain, cold and

windy at 6:00AM when breakfasts were being served all over the Valley of the Sun.Competitors were heading north of Phoenix to the Ben Avery Range for the last day ofthe Wildcat 6400 this year of 2012. The front from the long anticipated storm was justmoving through and putting an end to the first 3 days of competitions perfect weather. We did see some clearing to the west, and by the time we arrived at the range it was

just cold, overcast and windy. The match would go on with temps @ 48 F, raining veryslightly, wind blowing steady, we continued the day. Sometimes the sun even cameout. People flocked into the sunshine to get some warmth during our breaks. Duringone of the 100 Yd matches it started hailing (pea size) for a couple minutes. Peoplewere still shooting as time was ticking and we could not tell when it would end. The

wind now blowing about 13 mph and rising, the really good shooters were shootingclean scores with high X counts and the last two matches of the day went well. Italmost made up for the chilly weather.

Among the HMs, while there were many 1598's and 1599's for the day, Chris Abalo(Army) was the only one to beat the conditions all day and fired a clean 1600(amazing). Chris dropped only 2pts in the 640 record shot aggregate. With a 6398/543xs and is the 2012 Western Wildcat 6400 Champion.
