DUBAI METRO – RED & GREEN LINES

CUSTOMER BENEFITS Fully automated operation Proven reliability Low operating and maintenance costs Includes fully integrated communications and revenue collection solutions

“ The Dubai metro is being designed to provide its users with optimum class and reliability. Benchmarking it to cities around the world that use Thales technology convinced us to bring Thales on board.”

Abdulmajid Al Khaja, former CEORail Agency, RTA

THE CHALLENGE

Dubai is aiming to become the region’s prime business and leisure destination, has high population growth expectations, and suffers from severe traffi c congestion. The average number of road trips is expected to increase from 3.1 million to 13.1 million by 2020. To meet their objective, the Dubai Municipality decided on building an effi cient urban rail system – a fully automated Metro. And they demanded modern, yet well-proven technology.

In May 2005, the Dubai Rapid Link consortium, headed by Mitsubishi, won the contract to build the system. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) required advanced train control for their rolling stock and in June 2005 contracted Thales recognized as the world leader in fully automated train control technology.

Aiming for revenue service by 2009, the project was executed in two phases: fi rst the Red Line and then followed by the Green Line. Both lines are primarily elevated with some underground sections. The 52-km Red Line, extending from Rashidiya to Jebel Ali, offers 44 trains, 29 stations and has a depot at each end. By 2015, capacity will be 15,000 pphpd. The 23-km, 35 trains, 20 stations Green Line extends from Creek pass the Dubai Airport free Zone area. By 2015 passenger capacity will be 7,400 pphpd. The system is the longest driverless operation in the world.

THE SOLUTION: SELTRAC® CBTCThe Seltrac integrated driverless train control solution incorporates our pioneered moving-block technology that eliminates the need for signals on tracks while providing safe, close headway of shorter trains for an optimized service frequency. Our integrated NetTrac MT central

control system automatically schedules and operates the trains while providing the operator with fl exibility to add or delete trains and overcome problem occurrences. SelTrac CBTC communications-based train control has been well proven in major cities such as London, New York, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Ankara, Kuala Lumpur, and others for over twenty-fi ve years. The Dubai Municipality benefi ts from low operating and maintenance costs, optimal life cycle costs and proven reliability inherent with SelTrac technology. MHI also contracted Thales to provide a fully integrated communications solution as well as the revenue collection system. This includes a digital and wireless network, a security solution including on board video surveillance and access control, voice system, digital radio network, passenger information, public address, time distribution, automated passenger fare gates, card ticketing system, back offi ce revenue collection system, and an integrated control centre.

Thales provided its total solution on a turnkey basis incorporating design, integration, installation, testing and commissioning services.

THE RESULT

On September 9, 2009 the Red Line opened in full automatic operation mode serving 10 stations. In 2010, the remaining 19 stations were put into service.

The Green Line became operational in August 2011. It covers a distance of 23 km and consists of 20 stations including the transfer stations Union and Khalid Bin Al Waleed Stations, which are shared with the Dubai Metro Red Line.

The Dubai Metro is the world’s longest driverless train system with almost 75 kms of track.
