Today’s Honoree

The Thiel Players have been on campus since the early 1900’s. They are one of the most thriving extra-curricular groups on campus. They put on two major productions a year, a freshman orientation show and a children’s theater production every two years. Students from every major participate in the productions and a hallmark of the group is that everyone is welcome. Students are engaged as actors, technical crew and production designers. The Thiel Players make their home in the William A. Robinson Theater. The players have been led since 1974 by Dr. William Robinson. Dr. Rob-inson is retiring this year after more than 30 years as a faculty member at Thiel College, today we celebrate his work along with members of the Thiel Players past and present and encourage everyone to attend tonight’s production at 8 p.m. featuring an all-star Thiel Players cast.

Dr. Troy D. VanAken took office as the 19th president of Thiel College in July of 2009, after being elected by the College Board of Trustees at a special meeting on February 20.

VanAken, who came to Thiel from Albion College in Albion, Mich., holds a bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College, and master’s and doctorate

degrees from Bowling Green State University. A native of Michigan, his career in higher educa-tion began in 1994 when he was appointed assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Evansville and where he was later selected as assistant vice president for instructional technology. In 1999, Albion College named him vice president for information technology. After working at San Jose State University during 2002–03 through an American Council on Education Fellowship, VanAken returned to Albion with expanded responsibilities as athletic director and executive assistant to the president, and eventually vice president for business and finance. VanAken par-ticipated in Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management in 2005 and was named Albion’s executive vice president in 2006.

In addition to experience as a high school football and track coach, VanAken has served on committees of both the NCAA and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Recently, he was appointed to represent the Presidents’ Athletic Conference on the NCAA Division III Chancellor/ Presidents Advisory Group. He is active in economic and community development projects and has started three successful technology related companies.

VanAken and his wife, Annette, have two children, Trey and Gabriella.

Jack Leipheimer ’74 took over as Thiel College’s director of athletics on Nov. 17, 2008. He currently oversees Thiel’s 24 competitive athletics pro-grams, 22 of which are associated with the NCAA at the Division III level.

A coaching veteran of 34 years – including 25 at the collegiate level – Lei-pheimer returned to Thiel as its head football coach in 2001 and promptly guided the program to national prominence. His 2005 team compiled an 11-1 record and drew two NCAA playoff games to Alumni Stadium.

Over his eight seasons at the helm of the football program, Leipheimer amassed 36 wins – which ties for third most all-time in school history – including a NCAA Division III playoff win in 2005. Under his tutelage, Thiel players earned 114 all-conference selections, 17 all-region selec-tions and 10 All-America selections. He also coached five ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Amer-icans – a testament to his emphasis on academic excellence. Leipheimer continues to stress the importance of academic and athletic success to Thiel’s student-athletes as he oversees the day-to-day operations of the athletic department. In addition, Leipheimer’s focus on fund-raising efforts supports Thiel’s entire athletics program, which includes more than 40 coaches and staff members and over 300 student-athletes.

Jack and his wife, Patti, reside in Greenville. They have two daughters: Shanna Bossler, a 2002 Thiel graduate and Krista Ferguson, a 2005 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh.

Kurt reiser enters his fourth season as the head coach

after being named the 25th head coach in thiel college football history on nov. 16, 2008. a member of the coach-ing staff in various capacities under JacK leipheimer for eight seasons, reiser most recently served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the tomcats.

As a member of the Thiel coaching staff, Reiser has been no stranger to success.

As the team’s offensive line coach from 2001 to 2006, Reiser men-tored eight Tomcats to a com-bined 19 All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selections. Two players – Dave Hendricks and Bob Munch – were four-time selections.

In Thiel’s 11-win 2005 campaign, the Reiser-led offensive line played an integral part in securing the pro-gram’s first PAC title since 1972 and its first undefeated regular season since 1950. Five members of that unit were named to the All-PAC team, with two garnering first team honors.

While Hendricks turned in one of the best seasons of all time for a Thiel of-fensive lineman, earning AFCA first team and D3 Football.com first team All-America honors in addition to being named the Don Hansen Football Gazette National Offensive Lineman of the Year and earning an invitation to participate in the Aztec Bowl, the O-line as a whole paved the way for a

potent Tomcat attack.

Over the course of the 2005 season, Reiser’s line allowed only seven sacks in the regular season and aided in es-tablishing Steve Minton as the school’s all-time leading rusher and Darrell Satterfield and Brandon Chambers as one of the most prolific quarterback-receiver duos in school history.

After being named offensive coordina-tor prior to the 2007 season, Reiser has called the shots for several of the most impressive offensive displays in Thiel football annals.

In his inaugural season as the Tomcats’ offensive play-caller, running back Dan Hess set three school records in one day, racking up 327 yards and 30 points on 43 rushes in a 62-14 drubbing of Saint Vincent College. The next season quarterback Willie Bova conducted a similar assault on Thiel passing records against the Bearcats, completing 32 of 63 passes for 374 yards (all three are school records) and three scores.

Prior to arriving at Thiel, Reiser was the offensive coordinator at Leyden High School in Chicago for six years. A 1993 Allegheny graduate, he earned his master’s degree from DePaul Univer-sity in 1997. With the Gators, where he played under then-assistant coach Leipheimer, Reiser was a three-year starter at tight end and was a two-time All-NCAC selection and an All-Amer-ican. Reiser was also a starter on the Gators’ 1990 National Championship team.

He and his wife, Nancy, have three chil-dren: Ben, Ethan, and Ellie.

KURT REISERHEAD COACH | FOURTH SEASON

PROFILE

Frank Amato enters his 19th season as a Tomcat assistant. A former head coach at Reynolds High School, Amato amassed a record of 156-58-9 (.700) dur-ing his 23-year tenure. Amato is a 1960 graduate of Purdue University and played defensive back for the Boilermakers from his sophomore through senior years. In 1974 he earned a master’s degree from Edinboro University. Amato and his wife, Pat, have six grown children.

Charlie Noonan is in his first season on the Tomcat football staff. He will be pri-marily responsible for the defensive line.After persevering through a pair of ACL injuries early in his career at Rutgers University, Noonan started for two seasons at nose guard and accumulated over 100 tackles during that time. He was elected a team captain during his senior campaign and graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.In August 2011 Noonan was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles to compete for a position on their defensive line.

John Harakal spent both the 2010 and 2011 seasons as the defensive coordina-tor and linebackers coach for head coach Randy Trivers at Leesburg High School, one of the seven public high schools lo-cated in Lake County, Florida.Prior to his time at Leesburg, Harakal spent three seasons in a variety of posi-tions with the Rutgers University football program. Under Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano, Harakal served as the assistant defensive line coach during the 2009 season where he was re-sponsible for coaching the defensive ends.

Brad Paulson is entering his third season as the Tomcats’ offensive coordinator. Coach Paulson will also work with the Tomcat quarterbacks. Paulson arrived at Thiel after one year of coaching the wide receivers at Worces-ter State College. Prior to his time at Worcester State, Paulson held various offensive positions at Stonehill College, Saint Joseph’s College and Anderson University.A 2002 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a bachelor of science degree in sociology, Paulson began his coaching career as a student assistant with his alma mater in 2001.

Barry Oman enters his 12th season as a coach at Thiel, with primary respon-sibility for the team’s secondary. Oman earned his bachelor’s degree from Thiel in 1974 and his master’s degree from Youngstown State University in 1986. A two-time All-PAC selection as a free safety, Oman ranks third on the school’s all-time interceptions list with 13. He was inducted into the Thiel Athletic Hall of Fame in February, 2006. He and his wife, Linda, have two children, Ryan and Lauren.

Tim Scarvel is entering his first sea-son as an offensive assistant for the Tomcats.Scarvel comes to Thiel having coached at the high school level around the area for the past 14 years, including stints as both an assistant and the head coach at Reynolds High School and Kennedy Catholic School, and recently as the head coach at Farrell.

Darrell Satterfield begins his third sea-son as Thiel’s wide receivers coach after a prolific playing career with the Tomcats from 2003-05.

A two-time All-PAC quarterback, Sat-terfield led the Tomcats to a perfect 10-0 regular season record in 2005, as well as the program’s first NCAA Division III playoff appearance. Satterfield is Thiel’s career record holder in both passing touchdowns (46) and pass completion percentage (58.4).

Satterfield graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education.

Darrell SatterfieldWide Receivers

Bill Lawrence is entering his third season as a coach for the Tomcats. Lawrence brings over a decade of coach-ing experience to Thiel. His most recent position was at Murray State, where he coached both the defensive ends and the secondary. A 1999 Plymouth State University gradu-ate, Lawrence began his coaching career as a defensive assistant at his alma mater in 1998.During his playing career, Lawrence was a two-year starter at defensive tackle for the Panthers.

Having played for the Tomcats as part of Thiel’s 2005 PAC championship in the secondary, Boyle returns to the Tomcats having served three years as an assistant coach at the University of Maine.During his time at Maine, Boyle coached the secondary as well as the running backs. During his tenure as the running backs coach, Maine boasted 1,500 rushing yards and 20 touch-downs on the ground over the course of the season.Boyle was a three-year letterwinner for the Tomcats during his playing days and currently ranks fourth all-time on the school’s interceptions list.

Dan, the brother of left guard Mike Rasor, begins his fourth season as a student assistant on Coach Reiser’s staff. His first two seasons were spent as the videographer for the team, and he has spent the past two seasons working directly alongside Coach Reiser as an assistant offensive line coach. Dan is currently a senior at Thiel and is pursing his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, while minoring in Coaching.

Today’s honorary captain is Dr. Mark DelMaramo, who joined the Thiel English Department in 1989. He teaches all levels of composition, including freshman, honors and advanced. In addi-tion, Dr. DelMaramo teaches Business and Technical Writing and The History of Western Humanities

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, his M.A. from Gannon University, and his Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University. He enjoys reading mystery stories and the books of the English humorist P.G. Wodehouse, playing golf with his friend and colleague Dr. Chris Moinet, and following the ups and downs of his favorite team, the Baltimore Orioles.

DelMaramo’s wife, Brenda, is an adjunct in the English Depart-ment. They have two sons, Daniel and Nathan.

ABOUT THE PAC

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Ath-letic Conference continues its mission

of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washing-ton and Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC rema in s a unique organi-zation in this day of high pres-sure intercol-legiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an ath-letic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself.

The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division III indepen-dent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Cha-tham College became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08.

The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III national champi-onship events.

All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in indi-

vidual sports such as cross country and tennis, All-PAC accolades are

based upon performances at the conference

championships.

The PAC an-nually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Tro-phies to the

schools which perform best

across the board in PAC competition.

The Washington & Jef-ferson College men and

Westminster College women captured the 2011-12 trophies.

True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named 735 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

Andrew S. Erb is the Director of Bands and a Professor of Music at Thiel College, a position he has held since 2010. Mr. Erb con-ducts the Thiel Concert Band and directs the Thiel “Tomcat Marching Pride” and Thiel “Tom-cat Pep Band.” Additionally, he teaches private brass lessons to Thiel students and instructs first and second semester music the-ory classes. As an active performer, Mr. Erb has played trumpet with acts such as Marie Osmond, Wayne Newton, Lena Prima, and Ben Vereen. Prior to his appointment at Thiel College, Mr. Erb directed bands and taught music in public schools in Allegheny and Mercer counties for 14 years. Mr. Erb also directed the Jazz Ensemble, taught the trumpet studio, and performed with the faculty brass quintet at Westminster College

for six years prior to his appoint-ment at Thiel.Mr. Erb holds a bachelor’s de-gree in Music Education from Westminster College, a master’s degree in Trumpet Performance from Youngstown State Univer-sity, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Music. Mr. Erb is a member of PMEA, MENC, ITG, and the Pennsylvania Collegiate Bandmasters Association.He is a lifelong resident of Mer-cer County and currently lives in West Middlesex, Pa., with his wife, Diana, and two sons, Jona-than and Benjamin.

Arikka D. Fears was introduced as Spirit Coordinator at Thiel College on April 8, 2010. Fears’ primary responsibilities are to oversee the Tomcats’ competi-tive Cheer and Dance programs.Fears arrives at Thiel after a four-year stint at West Mesquite High School in Mesquite, Texas, where she taught dance and served as the coordinator of the school’s dance team. She also had re-sponsibility for the freshman and junior varsity cheerleading squads. She currently serves as an in-structor and judge with the Uni-versal Dance Association and the Universal Cheerleading Associa-tion (UCA), roles she has filled since 2006 and 2001, respec-

tively.The UDA named Fears its Head Instructor of the Year in 2004 and she was also recognized as the 2009 American Dance/Drill Team Outstanding Director.Fears also brings a variety of professional experience to her new position, most notably her work from 2003-05 as a Dallas Sidekick Sizzle Dancer, which in-cluded hip hop, pom and dance performance.

A 2005 graduate of Texas Wom-an’s University with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance, Fears also holds a secondary teaching certificate in dance from the University of North Texas.

‘BEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE’Hillier pitches professionally for CornBelters by Ed Topoleski

Bobby Hillier always had a strong right arm. It was a great asset for him at shortstop when making throws to first base from deep in the hole. Fate, in part, necessitated Hillier to put his arm to work in a different manner two weeks prior to his senior season with the Thiel Tomcats when he broke his left hand while batting.

Hillier, who throws in the low- to mid-90s, had always dabbled with pitching. Primarily because of his high velocity, he saw time on the mound late in games as a reliever.

After his left hand healed, however, Hillier’s role with the Tomcats was switched from shortstop to full-time pitcher. The move ignited Hillier’s career.

Hillier led Thiel his senior year with a 3.19 ERA. He tossed two complete games and regis-tered 32 strikeouts. Opposing hitters batted just .263 against Hillier, who allowed only nine extra-base hits on the season.

After college, Hiller was no-where near ready to hang up his cleats. One summer tryout led to a 3-day tryout from June 13-15 with the Normal (Illinois) CornBelters of the Frontier League.

Hillier hit 95 mph on the radar gun during the first day of his tryout with the CornBelters

and smashed three home runs. On the second day, he whiffed 3-of-4 batters he faced dur-ing live batting practice. The CornBelters signed Hillier the following day (July 15) at 5:30 p.m. Two hours later, Hillier donned his first professional baseball uniform.

“I was in shock,” Hillier said of the signing and his first taste of professional baseball. “I almost wanted to cry because I finally proved everybody wrong that doubted me. It was probably the best experience of my life.”

Hillier pitched 9 2/3 innings

with Normal over six weeks, collecting six strikeouts.

He learned many valuable les-sons along the way.

“You can’t miss spots up there,” Hillier said of the talent difference between batters he faced while at Thiel compared to those he faced while with Normal. “I could get away with throwing 94 like chest level or waist level and nobody would touch me but, up there, you do that and you’re gonna get hit hard.”

Hillier is looking forward to a workout with the Frontier League’s Gateway Grizzlies in two weeks. He also has a workout scheduled with a professional pitching coach on Oct. 14 and expects to take part in Frontier League spring training in March.

TODAY’S GAME NOTESWeek 4 - W&J 17, Thiel 0GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson Presidents scored two first-half touchdowns Sat-urday en route to a 17-0 victory over the Thiel Tomcats.

Dion Wiegand scored W&J’s first touchdown of the game with 5:08 left to play in the first quarter on a 1-yard run. Alex Baroffio set up the score on a 54-yard punt return to the Thiel 7-yard line.

The Presidents went into the locker room at half-time leading 14-0 after a 9-play drive concluded with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Baroffio to Hunter Creel with 17 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

W&J extended its lead to 17-0 on its first posses-sion of the second half when Eric Eberle booted a 44-yard field goal to put the finishing touches on a 12-play drive that consumed more than seven minutes of game clock.

After the Presidents went up 17-0, the Tomcats responded with a long drive of their own, but the march was stopped short of pay dirt when the Presidents sacked Andrew Smith on a fourth-and-goal play from the 3-yard line.

On their next possession, the Tomcats advanced the ball to the W&J 25-yard line, but an intercep-tion by Nathan Melhorn ended the threat.

Wiegand led the Presidents on the ground with 88 yards on 20 carries. Baroffio carried 16 times for 28 yards and completed 6-of-11 passes for 72 yards and one touchdown pass. Also for the Presidents, Matt Bliss completed 7-of-13 passes for 59 yards.

Taylor Fink led the Tomcats with 22 yards on the ground while Josh Potter picked up 18 rushing yards. Tight end Berend Grube made seven recep-tions for 48 yards.

Tom Thorpe led Thiel’s defense with 14 tackles (11 solo).

Thiel defensive end Tim Taylor, who made five tackles Saturday, recorded two sacks, 3.5 tackles for a loss and recovered one fumble. Taylor now has 26 career sacks, two less than Chris Lorber (2004-07), who is Thiel’s career leader. Taylor also has 52 tackles for loss, 1.5 less than Jon Howson (2002-05), who is the college’s career leader.

The Tomcats (1-3, 1-1 PAC) will try to get back on track Saturday when they host the undefeated Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (4-0, 2-0 PAC). Kick-off is at 1:30 p.m.

Waynesburg drops No. 23-ranked Thomas MoreWillie Leavell made the biggest play of Waynes-burg’s season to lead his team to a 14-10 victory over 23rd-ranked Thomas More last Saturday.

With Waynesburg Trailing 10-7 in the fourth quar-ter, the Jacket defense forced Thomas More to punt from its own 30-yard line. The Saints got the kick off to a good start, but Leavell busted through the opposing protection and not only blocked the punt, but fielded the ball almost immediately off the foot of Saint punter Mitch McDowell. After cleanly pulling the ball into his arms, Leavell took off untouched for the end zone and raised his index finger into the air as he scored the game-deciding touchdown.

With the win, the Jackets maintained its status as the only unbeaten team in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) at 4-0 and improved their con-ference record to 2-0.

The Orange and Black started at its own 20-yard line and, on third-and-two, senior running back Dominic Moore broke free for a career-long 56 yards to the Saints’ 15-yard line. Two plays later, both of which were runs by junior running back Bertrand Ngampa, Waynesburg took a 7-0 lead on a two-yard scoring tote by the third-year back.

The home team maintained its one-score lead through the opening period, but Thomas More found the end zone in the second quarter after a 10-play, 80-yard possession. The game remained tied until the second half, when Saints kicker Tim Gormly knocked in a 21-yard field goal halfway through the third quarter to put his team ahead 10-7.

From there, the Waynesburg defense put the finishing touches on the thrilling win by forcing a punt and a four-and-out before Fatigante was able to kneel on the football to melt away the remain-ing seconds of the game.

Tim Taylor UpdateSenior defensive end Tim Taylor recorded five tackles, two sacks, 3.5 tackles for a loss and recovered one fumble last Saturday against the W&J Presidents.

Taylor leads the PAC this season with six sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss.

In his career, Taylor has 26 sacks, two less than Chris Lorber (2004-07), who is Thiel’s career leader. Taylor also has 52 tackles for loss, 1.5 less than Jon Howson (2002-05), who is the college’s career leader.

More SacksThiel continues to lead the PAC with 16 sacks. Thiel sophomore defensive end Cody McClelland has three sacks this season, which puts him in a 3-way tie for the second most in the confer-ence. Waynesburg senior defensive lineman Matt Krause is also tied for second in the category with three sacks.

Sacks & Red Zone DefenseThiel senior linebacker Ethan Ludwig has re-corded 35 tackles (8.8 per game) on the season, which is the fifth most overall in the PAC.

Field Position BattleSaturday’s game will feature the two punters with the best punting averages in the PAC. Waynes-burg’s Zach Rogers leads the conference with an average boot of 41.6 yards. Thiel’s Cody McClel-land is second in the conference with an average punt of 39.2 yards.

Stopping the runThiel’s defense needs to limit Waynesburg’s run-ning game. The Yellow Jackets lead the PAC with 814 yards rushing (203.5 per game) and are sec-ond with eight rushing touchdowns.
