Jury Comments:
“Overall, a lovely structure – elegant in its details – that is appropriately formal and inviting at the same time . We love the detail and material attention paid to this extraordinarily simple structure . The architecture celebrates the ritual and the overall humility of the situation. The butterfly roof does its job as a reference to an uplifting metamorphosis. A very poetic project. Beautiful, humble, serene .”
HONORAWARDfor excellence in architectural design
The Honor Awards Program of AIA Kentucky is dedicated to recognizing and applauding works of architecture exhibiting design excellence, as well as to promoting public awareness and appreciation of the diversity, quality and scope of Kentucky architecture .
The 2012 Awards Program included 39 projects submitted by 27 firms from across the Commonwealth. The jury was directed to evaluate each project based on the success with which the project met its own individual requirements. Entries were weighed individually, not in comparison with one another, and the jury was directed to select as many or as few projects as it determined to be worthy of recognition.

Jury Comments:
“Incredible discipline and clarity characterize this simple box form . Tight detailing of the industrial metal skin gives the house a clean elegance . While contemporary in its language and at first glance disconnected from the culture of the regional context, the metal finish and the siting of the project in the landscape meadow makes an enriching connection to other agrarian or farm buildings that beautifully punctuate this region . The house works so well in the landscape, just hovering above the topography with open views in all directions. The formal, symmetrical plan feels light-filled, elegant and comfortable, creating a simple, very rationale concept that is well executed .”

Jury Comments:
“This is a very mature work – simple, modern additions are strategically located, well-proportioned, and complement the historic structure beautifully . Beautiful details, materials and massing allow it to relate to the existing home without imitation . The vertical emphasis in the windows and elements of the new construction are harmonious without copying the verticality of the original home. New and old are defined by slight contrast, yet carefully woven together . Interiors are equally thoughtful in creating a unified whole, while defining new from old.”

Jury Comments:
“This thoughtful and careful renovation demonstrates a skillful architectural handling of the relationship between the new barbershop and the old building . The deference to existing murals and finishes adds a level of richness to the interior environment. The design transcends style debates to create a classic barbershop that we imagine appeals to many men . An utterly simple, clever integration of existing elements, function and branding - a small project that makes a big difference in daily life.”

Jury Comments:
“This house is a great example of design that addresses energy savings in compact simple forms . The structure speaks with a careful and clear design voice from exterior through interior - simple, functional and elegant . The roof tilt is a fun innovation . The rigorous integration of form and technology creates a great learning experience for students, developing ideas they can actually build! The siting of the house on the campus seems very compelling and should also be commended .”

“The Jury was very impressed with the interior spatial development, which suggested an exciting and enriching community environment . The spatial and volumetric development inside enhances this sense of community, perhaps doing what trainers aspire to: make exercise interesting . It seems like a great place to see and be seen – would make me want to work out more .”

Jury Comments:
“The new addition is a well-proportioned, strong and contrasting form to the historic building . It takes an attitude of looking the other direction, opening up to the landscape, offering an alternative to the more enclosed space offered by the existing building . The simplicity of the form, materials and composition of the addition are to be commended .”

Jury Comments:
“The Jury appreciated the overall effort expended in this 19th Century bank facade restoration, as it reflects a commitment that surely enhances the streetscape. The design choices were difficult with the bottom half of the original building removed completely by an earlier renovation . Significant damage had also been done to the remaining second floor facade and cornice, originally all constructed of glazed terra cotta . The Jury recognized the attention to detail and skillful craftsmanship that restored the upper terra cotta facade .”
