Alpha's threw a tantrum at the starting gate in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, resulting in his sole off the boardplacing, although since then he's been a perfect gentleman in the gate. Alpha steadied at the start of the WoodMemorial and fanned three wide at the top of the stretch. Still, he finished only a neck behind a stubbornGemologist.

Alpha's third crop sire Bernardini has been a leading sire since his runners hit the track. Bernardini's son StayThirsty was a close second in the Belmont Stakes and won the Travers, giving the young sire his first winner at aClassic distance. Bernardini is poised to become a successor to his sire A.P. Indy in getting stamina orientedoffspring. His runners win over all surfaces.

Alpha’s dam Munnaya was a long-winded turf router. she won at 1 7/16 miles (11.5F) and placed at 1 1/4 miles.Alpha's distaff line is filled with quality runners such as Canadian Champions Kamar and Key to the Moon,Kentucky Oaks heroine Seaside Attraction and World Champion Fantastic Light.

The legendary Nijinsky is Alpha’s damsire. He established Northern Dancer as a major bloodline in Europe.Nijinsky is the only stallion to have the distinction of siring a Kentucky Derby and Epsom Derby winner in the sameyear.

The diminutive Alpha has the pedigree and class to run all day. He's a small, lightly built colt, but has a smoothstride and good leg extension. He's overcome minor trouble and has schooled all year to overcome his gateproblems. If he can keep his temperament in check on Derby day, Alpha has a legitimate shot to wear the roses.Overall score: A

Bodemeister leapt to the top of many Kentucky Derby lists with his runaway performance in the Arkansas Derby. The colt's 9 1/2 length winning margin was the largest posted in any Derby prep race this year. The ArkansasDerby field wasn't stellar and Bodemiester's victory flattered the San Felipe winner Creative Cause, who beatBodiemeister only a half length in that contest.

Bodemeister has a classic oriented pedigree. His sire Empire Maker was second in the Kentucky Derby as thefavorite, but came back to win the Belmont Stakes. A son of Kentucky Derby hero Unbridled, Empire Makerimparts stamina to his offspring. Bodemiester's damsire is the legendary Storm Cat. He is a leading U.S.broodmare sire. Bodemiester's second damsire, Intermediate/Classic Chef -de-race A.P. Indy, and third damsireClassic Chef-de-race Roberto add more stamina genes to the pedigree.

The female family of Bodemeister is filled with quality. His first five dams have all won or placed in stakes racesand his fourth dam, Bity Girl, was a champion juvenile in England. Bodemeister is the first foal produced by hisdam, Untouched Talent. She was a talented sprinter, but his second dam Parade Queen was a hardy veteran, inthe money ten of sixteen outings. She won or placed in graded stakes up to 1 1/8 miles.

Bodemiester, is a large colt with a muscular, slanted shoulder and powerful hindquarers, typical of a router. has thepedigree and talent to win at classic distances. Out of the last eleven colts that were unraced at age two andcompeted in the Kentucky Derby, only Curlin finished in the money. He placed third in the Kentucky Derby, butwon the Preakness and went on to become a world-class Champion. Bodemeister likes to run on the pace. He'llhave plenty of company up front in the Derby. Bodemeister is bucking history here and despite his talent, he'sfacing a monumental task in Kentucky. Winning is a tall task, but finishing in the money is not. Overall score: B

As a juvenile, Creative Cause stamped himself as one of the top colts in California with victories in the Best Paland Norfolk Stakes and a third place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. At three, Creative Cause beatBodemeister in the San Felipe Stakes but lost a heartbreaking photo finish to I'll Have Another.

Creative Cause's sire Giant's Causeway is a top international sire. His offspring have no distance or surfacelimitations.

California Champion Older Mare Dream of Summer, the dam of Creative Cause, was victorious in six stakes races, from the 6 ½ furlong Rancho Bernado Handicap (G3) to the 1 1/16 mile Apple Blossom (G1). Dream of Summerwas second in two editions of the Santa Margarita Invitational at 1 1/8 miles.

Creative Cause's damsire Siberian Summer, a veteran of 32 races, was victorious in the Charles H. Strub Stakes(G-1) at 1 ¼ miles. The offspring of Siberian Summer’s daughters are young and most of their offspring arecompeting in the claiming ranks. Besides Creative Cause, Siberian Summer is the broodmare sire of BahamaBound, who placed in the Winter Melody Stakes at 1 1/16 miles over the dirt. It’s hard to determine whetherSiberian Summer will have stamina or speed influence on his daughter’s progeny, given the limited number of theirrunners.

Creative Cause likes to run close to the pace. He's handled trouble in his races and has been facing the top coltsin California all winter. He has the class and pedigree to handle the triple crown distances. Physically, he is anaverage sized colt with the conformation of a two-turn router. Overall score: A

Daddy Long Legs is this year's European entrant in the Kentucky Derby. Last year Aidan O'Brian trained Master of Hounds toa second place finish in the UAE Derby and the well-bred colt placed fifth in the Kentucky Derby.

Top second crop sire Scat Daddy is also the sire of Derby entrant Daddy Nose Best. The majority of Scat Daddy's offspring arebest over dirt and turf but his winners over dirt own the same tenacity and class. Although we don't know how far his offspringwill run, Scat Daddy's progeny have won up to 1 1/8 miles over dirt, 1 3/16 miles over synthetic and 1 1/4 miles over turf.

Daddy Long Leg's dam was a Grade 3 sprinter on the track. Besides Daddy Long Legs, Dreamy Maiden produced the stakeswinning sprinter Tres Dream. His second dam Sparrow Lake won the 1 1/4 mile Wonder Where Stakes. There are a few otherstakes winners scattered throughout Daddy Long Legs' pedigree, but nothing notable.

Meadowlake, Daddy Long Leg's damsire, was a top producer of precocious sprinter/milers. His daughters bore two Grade 3winners at 1 1/4 miles, but the majority of their offspring are distance challanged. Daddy Long Legs' second damsire,Apalachee is a Brilliant Chef - de -race, known for imparting speed to his descendants.

Although he did win at 1 3/16 miles, Daddy Long Legs benefited from a crawling pace in the UAE Derby, with fractionsof :26.13, :50.54 and six furlongs in 1:15.19. He won't get that funeral pace in Kentucky. The colt does have a dirt pedigree, sohe may perform better over the surface his second time around. Daddy Long Legs is an average sized colt, but his shoulderappears more muscualr than his hindquarters, giving him the overall appearance of a miler. His pedigree screams miler andthat, along with all of the traveling he's done this year indicates that he's up against it in Kentucky. Overall score: D

Daddy Nose Best has proven himself over three different surfaces. He has a solid foundation of eight starts as ajuvenile and enters the Kentucky Derby as one of the more experienced runners. He is one of the few Derbycontestants with two stakes victories at 1 1/8 miles and should be one of the fittest horses in the race.

Daddy Nose Best’s sire Scat Daddy, a son of world champion Johannesburg, is proving to be ne next break-outstallion. He was last year’s top new sire and leads this year’s second crop sire list. The majority of his offspring arebest over turf, but Scat Daddy’s winners over dirt own the same tenacity and class. Although we don't know howfar his offspring will run, Scat Daddy's progeny have been victorious up to 1 1/8 miles over dirt, 1 3/16 miles oversynthetic and 1 1/4 miles over turf.

There is little blacktype in the immediate distaff family of Daddy Nose Best. His second dam Follow the Moneywas a G-2 winner at 1 1/6 miles over the turf. Her half sister Heartthrob was a stakes winner at 1 1/8 miles over turfand another half sister Wealthy is Grade 1 stakes placed over dirt.

Daddy Nose Best's damsire Thunder Gulch won the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers on his way toearning honors as Champion Three Year Old. His daughters have produced six stakes winners at 1 1/4 miles orfarther.

Daddy Nose Best likes to make one run from the back of the pack. He was unplaced in two starts over theChurchill dirt as a juvenile, but his dirt form seems to have improved since then. He's an averaged-sized colt with amuscular, slanted shoulder and hindquarters of a router. His running style and pedigree suggest that 1 1/4 miles iswithin his scope. Of more concern is the class of horses he's been defeating. Overall score: B

In winning the Illinois Derby, Done Talking posted one of the slowest final times ever recorded for the race. Heflashed a brief promise of positive things to come when finishing fourth, beaten only a length in the Remsen over aspeed favoring track. In his three year old debut, Done Talking was a lackluster 10th in the Gotham. He posted hisbest speed figure in winning the Illinois Derby.

Broken Vow, Done Talking's sire, was a solid Grade 2 level runner at 1 1/8 miles. Most emulate their sire and aregood for sprints up to 1 1/8 miles, although he is represented by two stakes winners at 1 1/4 miles, Unbridled Belleand Matt's Broken Vow.

Done Talking's damsire Dixieland Band was a top producing son of Northern Dancer. He is the broodmare sire ofKentucky Derby winner Street Sense and the multiple Grade 1 winners Society Selection and Southern Image.

The female family of Done Talking includes some solid stakes winners. His half sister Table Talking is a stakeswinning sprinter, as is their dam. His second dam is a Grade 3 winner and Done Talking's fourth dam is thepopular race veteran Vodka Talking. Top sprinter Henny Hughes is a distant relative.

Done Talking has a decent pedigree for mud, but his only race over a "good" track resulted in the worse finish inhis career. We don't know if it was the surface or some other factor that did him in. He appears to be of averageheight, with the body of a router. His hindquarters appear slightly more muscular than his shoulder. Done Talking'spedigree is borderline for 1 1/4 miles and he doesn't appear to be fast enough to keep up with this year's top Derbyprospects, but his stalking style in a race filled with speed could earn him longshot chance to finish in the money.Overall score: C

Dullahan swept past Two Year Old Champ Hansen with a strong off the pace move to win the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. He's a large colt with proven affinity for Polytrack and turf. Dullahan defeated a strong group of Kentucky Derby hopefuls in theBlue Grass Stakes. Besides Hansen, the field contained Louisiana Derby (G-1) winner Hero Of Order, Tampa Derby (G-3)winner Prospective, Palm Beach Stakes (G-3) winner Howe Great, and six stakes placed runners.

Dullahan's sire Even The Score won a Grade 2 Stakes at 1 1/8 miles, but was third in his only stakes attempt at 1 1/4 miles. Hisoffspring are best as milers. Dullahan is one of two of his progeny with wins at 1 1/8 miles. Even the Score has sired only onewinner at 1 1/4 miles, Secretariat (10F turf) hero Take The Points. Although he gets winners over dirt, Even The Score's bestrunners win over turf and polytrack.

Dullahan’s half-brother Mine That Bird was the 2009 Kentucky Derby shocker. He followed up with a tough beat in thePreakness Stakes, losing to the amazing Rachel Alexandra, and checked in third in the Belmont Stakes. Dullahan's secondand third dams own blacktype, but there’s little to note in the rest of this distaff family. Should Dullahan win the KentuckyDerby, his dam will be the first in history to have sired two Kentucky Derby winners.

There's no doubt that Dullahan is getting good at the right time and the way he won the Blue Grass Stakes bodes well for hisability to handle 1 1/4 miles. He's a large, muscular colt with the body of a router. The big question mark is how he will fare overthe Churchill dirt. In three starts over the surface, his closest finish was six lengths behind Hansen in the Breeders' CupJuvenile. Since the Bluegrass Stakes was switched to Polytrack in 2006, none of the winners have hit the board in theKentucky Derby. The best finishes were by Street Sense (second in the Blue Grass, winner of the Derby) and Paddy El Prado,(second in the Blue Grass, third in the mud in the Derby). Like his older brother Mine that Bird, Dullahan's best shot of winningthe Kentucky Derby may be if the track comes up muddy. Overall score: B

The very lightly raced El Padrino showed promise as a juvenile when he closed like a freight train to come up a half length shortin the Remsen Stakes. El Padrino hit the top of many Derby lists with his scintillating nose victory in the Risen Star after atough stretch battle. Sent off as one of the favorites in the Florida Derby, El Padrino was kept wide the whole way. Unable tomake up ground in the stretch, El Padrino crossed the finish line a lackluster fourth.

Despite being a son of Classic Chef-de-Race A. P. Indy, El Padrino's sire Pulpit infuses more speed than stamina into hisoffspring. Represented by 51 stakes winners both in the US and internationally, Pulpit has produced only five stakes winners at1 ¼ miles, and just two of them were successful over the dirt. El Padrino's damsire Giant’s Causeway hasn’t yet cracked thetop 20 on the Broodmare Sire list as he’s still a young stallion. As a damsire, he’s represented by six stakes winners. One, theIrish-bred Planteur, has been successful at 1 ¼ miles. Since Giant’s Causeway is noted for contributing stamina to his offspring,it isn’t a stretch to assume that he will do the same as a broodmare sire.

El Padrino's distaff family is loaded with talented stars and the mares of this distaff line are excellent producers. El Padrino'sdam Enchanted Rock is a half sister to two Grade 2 stakes winners. Four of her half sisters have produced graded stakeswinners. El Padrino's second and third dams are Grade 1 winners and his fourth and fifth dams are blue hens (superiorproducing females).

El Padrino is clearly talented and loves the slop. He’s mentally mature, will rate of off the pace for his jockey and has shownathleticism in overcoming minor trouble. El Padrino's pedigree is borderline for 1 1/4 miles. He is a large, muscular horse withalmost a quarter-horsy build. El Padrino has a thick neck and powerful hindquarters, yet he has a deep slanted shoulder whichhelps with his leg extension. El Padrino has a long stride, but appears to paddle with his right foreleg. El Padrino likes to racea few lengths off of the pace. He's battle tested, but may lack the bottom foundation to get the Derby distance. Overallscore: B

the lightly raced Gemologist held off the late rush of Alpha in the Wood Memorial to remain undefeated. He reallyhasn't been tested and appeared to be loafing down the Aqueduct stretch, only to gain focus when Alpha wasputting in his run.

Gemologist's sire Tiznow is the only two-time winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic. He passes his determinationand will to win to his offspring, who, like their sire, hit their best stride in the middle of their three year old season. He is one of the few stallions standing in North America that traces directly back to the legendary Man O’War.Tiznow is represented by three winners at Classic distances; Travers Stakes hero Colonel John, Belmont Stakeswinner Da’Tara and Dubai World Cup Champ Well Armed.

Gemologist’s distaff line is filled with classy stakes horses. He is a half sibling to two stakes winners and a stakesplaced runner. Crystal Shard, the dam of Gemologist, is an unraced full sister to the multiple Grade 2 stakeswinner Withallprobibility. That hardy race mare was successful from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles and was second inthe Kentucky Oaks. The Grade 1 winning mare Summer Colony and Japanese Triple Tiara heroine Still In Loveare part of this immediate female family.

Gemologist for all accounts is still pretty much untested and his speed figures are on the slow side, so we don'tknow how talented he really is. Physically, he is a huge (17 hands high) colt with a well angled shoulder andpowerful hind quarters. He has the body of a stamina-laden distance horse. He's shown that he can sit off of thepace while showing some fight in the stretch. On the downside, Gemologist appears a little inexperienced andunfocused. Not what you want to see in the Derby. One thing's for sure. He has the pedigree to run all day, he'spassed every test and is the only undefeated colt going into the Kentucky Derby. Overall score: A

The front running Hansen has been headed only once in his career. He sat off of the flank of the front-runninglong-shot King And Crusader in the Gotham Stakes, but that effort could hardly be called a pace pressing effort, since he was practically on the lead. In his first effort at 1 1/8 miles in the Bluegrass Stakes. Hansen set moderatefractions and owned a 2 1/2 length lead in the stretch, but he couldn't hold off the late charge of Dullahan. To befair, Hansen didn't need a tough race and his jockey gave only a modest effort to push the colt.

Hansen's sire Tapit is one of the top ranked third crop sires. Generally his daughters are better performers than hiscolts, although two of his three winners at 1 1/4 miles are colts. Hansen’s dam Stormy Sunday won three of fourlifetime races. Hanson is the first blacktype winner in his female family in five generations.

Sir Cat, Hansen’s damsire, was a Grade 2/3 class runner competing successfully at distances up to 1 1/8 miles. He wasn't much of a sire and his daughters have produced few stakes winners. Besides Hansen, Sir Cat isrepresented as a broodmare sire by Santa Anita Oaks heroine Crisp and three listed stakes winners. None havewon past 1 1/16 miles.

Hansen's pedigree indicates that he is borderline for 1 ¼ miles. He isn't overly large or muscular, but his gait hasexcellent leg extension and he owns a high cruising speed. Other speed in the Derby and his borderline pedigreefor the distance may hamper Hansen's efforts in the Kentucky Derby. Still, the pretty gray colt has shown class, heart and a will to win, so he could still finish in the money. Overall score: B

I'll Have Another was second in the Best Pal Stakes last year to a top California juvenile, Creative Cause. He tookrevenge on that foe in the Santa Anita Derby, grabbing a tenacious nose victory.

I'll Have Another's sire Flower Alley won the Travers Stakes and placed second to Champion Saint Liam in theBreeders' Cup Classic. A third crop sire, Flower Alley was off to a slow start at stud. His maturing offspring are bestaround two turns.

I'll Have Another is the first stakes winner in his distaff family in two generations. His half brothers have won fromsprints to 1 1/16 miles over dirt and turf.

Arch, I'll Have Another's damsire, is young broodmare sire. He is represented by a French Listed Stakes winner at1 1/4 miles over the turf, but many of his daughters' offspring haven't raced at classic distances. Arch’s pedigreeand record at stud indicate that his daughters could pass along stamina influences but it is too soon to make adefinitive factual statement that Arch will be a stamina-oriented damsire.

I'll Have Another is a powerfully built colt with a similar body style to World Champion Curlin, although the twoaren't related. I'll Have Another showed class at age two in sprints and has won both starts going two turns. Heprefers to run on or near the lead, but may sit farther back if asked. I’ll Have Another owns the pedigree to excel atclassic distances, but he’s coming into the Derby with only two recent races under his girth and may wind up a littleshort on foundation. His Brisnet speed figure regressed slightly in his last race. Overall score: B

Liaison showed promise as a precocious juvenile, but hasn't carried his form into his three year old year. In hisinauspicious sophomore debut, Liaison pressed the pace most of the way in the R. B. Lewis Stakes. He wasalready backing up in the stretch when he was squeezed between horses and clipped heels, losing his rider. In twosubsequent starts Liaison's form has steadily gone downhill.

Liaison's sire Indian Charlie won at 1 1/8 miles but was third in the 1988 Kentucky Derby behind his stablemate,Real Quiet. At stud, the recently deceased sire is known for producing precocious offspring that win up to 1 1/8miles. Six of Indian Charlie’s stakes wining progeny have won at 1 1/8 miles, but out of close to 500 foals, onlyone, Fleet Indian, is a stakes winner at 1 ¼ miles. The talented mare won the Personal Ensign (G-1) andDelaware Handicap (G-2), both at that distance.

There aren't many stakes winners in Liaison's female family. Other than the colt himself, Liaison’s dam GallopingGal is the most accomplished runner in the family. She spent her racing career competing over the dirt and turf inmiddle distance stakes events and is Grade 2 Stakes placed. Belmont Stakes hero Victory Gallop’s daughters arejust starting to bear runners. Currently, they have produced only four stakes winners, all sprinter/milers. Liaison isVictory Gallop’s first Grade 1 winner as a broodmare sire.

Liaison's pedigree is borderline for 1 1/4 miles and beyond. He’s an averaged sized bay colt with a deep butslightly upright shoulder balanced by a long, strong hip and muscular hindquarters. His form is poor, and heappears to struggle over dirt. Perhaps a run on the turf is in his future, but his Kentucky Derby chances appearslim. Overall score: D

Optimizer was a late draw-in to the Kentucky Derby after the connections of Mark Valeski withdrew their colt as theyfelt that he wasn't 100% for the race.

Optimizer has finished in the money in one of six races over the dirt, but won and placed in both starts over the turf. He'sunplaced in both starts at Churchill Downs. Optimizer's Second Crop Sire English Channel is a Turf Champion. He excelled atroute races. He set a new course record in the United Nations Handicap at 1 3/16 miles and won the Breeders' Cup Turf in hisfinal start. At stud, he's yet to produce a winner at 1 1/4 miles, however one of his progeny won their maiden at 1 3/16 milesover the turf. As expected, English Channel's offspring are best over turf and Polytrack. He has two maiden winners and twograded stakes placed runners over dirt out of 63 starters.

Optimizer's damsire A.P. Indy is a Classic Chef-de-race, noted for passing stamina influences to his offspring.Amongst the many offspring produced by his daughters are 2010 Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver, 2011Champion Older Female Royal Delta and 2006 Champion Three Year Old Filly Wait A While.

Optimizer has a classy, stamina oriented distaff family. His dam Indy Pick is a half-sister to the top race mareFinder’s Fee, heroine of the Matron (G-1) at two and the Acorn (G-1) at three, as well as other graded stakesevents. Another one of her half-sisters, Freedom of Speech, produced the multiple stakes winning turf veteran T DVance. Optimizer's second dam is the Grade 1 heroine Fantastic Find. His third dam Blitey and fourth dams LadyPitt are blue hens. Breeders' Cup Sprint Champ Dancing Spree and Champion Filly Heavenly Prize are membersof this distaff line.

Optimizer has the pedigree to love distance, but his best race surface thus far has proven to be turf. He has a onerun closing style, but his late pace speed figures are dull. Overall score: D

Prospective was starting to look like a possible longshot play in the Kentucky Derby before he threw a clunker in the BluegrassStakes. He was never into contention. Maybe he didn't like the surface or had a bad day since he's a graded stakes winner overPolytrack.

Prospective has a stamina oriented pedigree, perfect for the Classic distances. Malibu Moon has sired twenty graded stakeswinners, seven of whom have won at 1 ¼ miles. Oddly enough, all except one of his distance winners are fillies.

Spirited Away, Prospective's dam, won half of her eight starts including the Truly Bound Handicap at 1 1/16 miles over a sloppytrack. The immediate female family is light on blacktype; However, Prospective’s third dam North Sider was Champion OlderMare of 1982.

Prospective's damsire Awesome Again has consistently been one of the top 100 broodmare sires in the country. He’s a fairlyyoung broodmare sire and his daughters have yet to produce a stakes winner at classic distances. Since Awesome Again isrepresented by six winners at classic distances, including Champions Ghostzapper and Ginger Punch, there is no reason tothink that his stamina won’t transfer to his daughters’ progeny.

The Bluegrass stakes was Prospective's second time finishing out of the money in eight career starts. His other off the boardplacing came in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill. Prospective resembles his sire with the body of a two turn horse, adeep, slanted shoulder balanced by a powerful hind end. He is of average height. He's a mid-pack runner. The colt has astrong mud and distance pedigree and he could possibly improve his form over a muddy track, but currently he appears to bejust a cut below the top horses. Overall score: C

As a youngster, Rousing Sermon competed successfully in restricted state-bred stakes in California. He carried that form intothe CashCall Futurity, where he closed like a freight train only to come up a neck short behind Liaison. Unfortunately as a threeyear old he was completely outclassed by the California horses in his first two starts. Rousing Sermon competed in theLouisiana Derby, but could manage only a third place finish after racing wide.

Rousing Sermon's sire Lucky Pulpit was a stakes class miler over dirt and turf in California. The third crop sire's offspring areracy and precocious. None have won past 1 1/16 miles, although two have placed at 1 1/8 miles.

Despite having stamina influences throughout his distaff line, Rousing Sermon's female family are mainly sprinters and haveproduced sprinter/milers. His dam is a half sister to the hardy multiple stakes veteran Chindi, who made over 80 starts in hiscareer. The multiple Grade 1 winners Dream Supreme and her son Hopeful Stakes hero Majestic Warrior are distant relativesof Rousing Sermon.

Awesome Again, the damsire of Rousing Sermon, is a fairly young broodmare sire and his daughters have yet to produce astakes winner at classic distances. Awesome Again is represented by six winners at 1 1/4 miles and beyond, includingChampions Ghostzapper and Ginger Punch, so his stamina may transfer to his daughters’ progeny, if those babies are bystamina-oriented sires.

Rousing Sermon's pedigree is very borderline for 1 1/4 miles. The colt has a miler type body. He's not overly muscular, but hasa slightly upright shoulder and his hind quarters don't appear as powerful as the typical sprinter. He is a one-run closer and hasposted triple digit late pace figures in five of nine starts, so he could be passing tired rivals at the end. At this point, he appearsa cut below the best runners in the Derby field. Overall score: C

Sabercat earned his way into the Kentucky Derby with a victory in the Delta Jackpot Stakes. In the last nine years, only one colt, Closing Argument, has finished in the top three in both the Delta Jackpot and Kentucky Derby. Thisyear, Sabercat hasn't shown the same flash as he did as a two year old, as he's been trounced by over 16 lengthsin his two starts this year.

Sabercat's sire Bluegrass Cat placed in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont and Travers Stakes, but so far, the third cropsire's offspring have been win early types that are distance challenged with maturity.

Sabercat's damsire Forty Niner also placed in the Kentucky Derby, but won the Travers. Most of his daughter'soffspring are best up to 1 1/8 miles, although they did bear three Grade 2 stakes winners at 1 1/4 miles. Sabercat'ssecond damsire Halo is a Brilliant/Classic Chef-de-race indicating that he imparts both brilliant speed and classicstamina to his descendants.

Sabercat's immediate female family is modest. His half sister Olivine is a stakes winner and his dam is a half sisterto a multiple graded stakes placed runner, but that's about it for notable blacktype (stakes wins). His distantrelatives include the multiple Graded winners Carriage Trail and Criminologist.

Sabercat is distance challenged for classic distances, but his late running style may help his chances in theKentucky Derby. Sabercat has the overall appearance of a miler. He has a muscular, slightly upright shoulderbalanced with powerful hindquarters. He finished only a neck behind the determined Secret Circle in the ArkansasDerby, but Sabercat was drifting in the stretch, a sign of a tired horse. If his earnings from the Delta Jackpot didn'tcount, Sabercat wouldn't be in this year's Derby field. Overall score: D

Take Charge Indy was fairly precocious for a son of A. P. Indy. He won his maiden in late July of his two year oldseason over the Arlington Polytrack, a surface most of his sire’s offspring dislike. Despite the early win, TakeCharge Indy should improve throughout his three and four year old season.

Take Charge Indy's sire A.P. Indy is a Classic Chef-de-race, noted for passing stamina influences to his offspring.Despite the classic influences afforded his progeny, A.P. Indy has few offspring that have done well in the TripleCrown contests. He has never sired a Kentucky Derby winner, but his son Bernardini won the tragedy marred 2006edition of the Preakness Stakes. A year later, A.P. Indy's daughter Rages to Riches was only the third filly inhistory to record a victory the Belmont Stakes after a thrilling duel with eventual Horse of the Year Curlin. TakeCharge Indy may have inherited his precocity from his damsire Dehere, Champion Juvenile of 1992. Dehere’sdaughters have produced seven stakes horses who have won at 1 ¼ miles or farther.

Take Charge Lady, the dam of Take Charge Indy, is a multiple Grade 1 winner and competed against the topmares of her generation on the race track. She won back-to-back editions of the Ashland Stakes (G-1), threegraded stakes at 1 1/8 miles and she placed second once at 1 ¼ miles.

Take Charge Indy likes to be forwardly placed in his races, but he is versatile enough to sit where his jockey placeshim. He has the pedigree and class to do well at classic distances. Take Charge Indy is the spitting image of hisdam. He is on the small side of average and isn't overly muscular. Despite his smaller stature, Take Charge Indyhas the build of a route horse and a smooth, extended gait. He appears to be maturing at the right time.Additionally, he attracts Churchill's perennial leading rider Calvin Borel, who has partnered with three horses to winthe Kentucky Derby in the last five years. Trinniberg is a hardy colt who has been outrunning his pedigree. He finished second to Currency Swap in theHopeful Stakes, but was an embarrassing 20+ lengths behind Union Rags in the Satatoga Special. As a threeyear old Trinniberg led gate to wire in both graded stakes attempts, which were sprints.

Trinniberg's sire Teuflesberg was a solid, hard trying graded stakes placed veteran of 21 starts. He never wonbeyond a mile. The second crop sire's progeny are showing the same precocious determination as their sire. Nonehave won past seven furlongs.

The female family of Trinniberg is very light on blacktype. His dam placed in a sprint stakes as a juvenile. She’s ahalf sister to a stakes placed sprinter and there's nothing else of note in this female family. Trinniberg is the onlygraded stakes winner in this distaff line in five generations.

Trinniberg's damsire Goldminer's Gold, a son of Crafty Prospector, placed in a stakes race. As a sire, he producedonly two offspring with blacktype. Trinniberg's second damsire Salem never won beyond a mile.

Trinniberg is all about speed. Gun to the front and run as fast as you can. He's never raced a mile and will beasked to run an additional three furlongs farther than he's ever tried. Trinniberg has the conformation of a typicalsprinter, with a slightly upright shoulder, thick neck and powerful hindquarters, although he doesn't appear to be as"quarter-horsey" as many sprinters. His tactic of gunning to the lead and going as far as he can will likelycompromise the chances of colts that like to sit on or just off of the pace, but it will benefit the one-run closers.Overall Score: D

Union Rags' has lost only twice. As a two year old, he came up a head short in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile after awide trip. In the Florida Derby, the massive colt was trapped on the inside, checked a few times and was let withtoo much to do in the stretch after finding running room late. He was the only horse closing ground in the stretch ofthe Florida Derby.

Union Rags' deceased sire Dixie Union hasn't produced a winner at 1 1/4 miles, however, his son Grasshopperfinished second in the Travers at the classic distance of 1 ¼ miles. Union Rags' damsire Gone West is a top 20broodmare sire. His daughters have produced 16 stakes winners at 1 1/4 miles or farther, but only four of thosewinners were victorious over dirt.

Union Rags' immediate distaff family is filled with sprinter/milers, but his second dam Terpsichorist was a stakeswinning turf router, victorious from 1 1/16 miles to 1 ½ miles. Her resume includes victories in the SheepsheadBay (G-2) and Long Island Handicaps (G-3). Union Rags’ third dam Glad Rags was a Champion Two Year Old inIreland.

Union Rags' pedigree is borderline for 1 1/4 miles, but there are other factors to consider. He's a huge, massivecolt with the conformation and gait of a two-turn horse. He's shown proficiency over dirt and mud, plus he'sovercome trouble in his races. He prefers to sit off of the pace in his races. Union Rags has been at the top of hisclass both as a two and three year old and he appears to have all the tools needed to earn a victory in theKentucky Derby. Overall Score: A

Went The Day Well is a late developing colt. He owns only a maiden and Grade 3 Stakes win to his name. None of the horsesthat Went The Day Well defeated in the Spiral Stakes have come back to win. The third place finisher in the race, HeavyBreathing, returned to finish an uninspired seventh in the Blue Grass Stakes.

Went The Day Well's sire Proud Citizen won the Lexington Stakes (G-2) to earn his way into the Kentucky Derby. He finishedsecond in the 2002 Derby behind War Emblem and followed up with a third place finish in the Preakness. The majority of ProudCitizen's offspring are best up to 1 1/6 miles, however, he does have six stakes winners at 1 1/8 miles. Of those, five hadstamina oriented distaff lines. He's represented by one winner at 1 1/4 miles, the top mare Proud Spell.

Tiznow is the only two -time Breeders' Cup Classic winner. He passes his determination and will to win to his offspring, who, like their sire, hit their best stride in the middle of their three year old season. He's a young broodmare sire, but he should passhis affinity for distance to his daughter's offspring.

Went The Day Well's dam is an unraced half sister to a stakes winner. His second dam Sweet Roberta placed in the Breeders'Cup Juvenile Fillies. That's about it for notable blacktype in the immediate female family, although the Grade 1 winner Cure TheBlues is descended from this distaff line.

Went The Day Well is improving at the right time and he has a superior pedigree for mud. He's a tall, leggy colt and hishindquarters appear more powerful than his slightly upright shoulder. Overall, he is well balanced, but not overly muscular. Hehas a smooth gait with excellent leg extension. Went The Day Well has a mid-pack running style. He gets an "A" for pedigree, but he falls into the "who did he beat" category. If the Derby is run over the off going, this colt's day could go well. Overallscore: C
