Located in beautiful Huntington, W.Va., Marshall University is the focal point of a city with a population of about 50,000, situated in

a Tri-State area of more than 300,000. The Huntington campus, noted for its attractiveness, level terrain and accessibility, occupies approximately 88 acres near the center of Huntington, a few blocks east of downtown and just a walk away from the banks of the Ohio River. Marshall also has a campus in South Charleston, W.Va., and centers across the state. Marshall University is named after John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States from 1801 through 1835. The longest serving Chief Justice in United States history, Marshall is widely regarded as having established a broad interpretation of the Constitution of the United States, which established the Constitution as the basis of the American legal system and the “rule of law” as the law of the land. During his tenure as Chief Justice, the Judicial Branch of the new American government rose to a level of importance commensurate with that of the Executive and Legislative branches. Marshall was founded as Marshall Academy in 1837, designated a college in 1858, the state normal school in 1867 and a university in 1961. Today, Marshall University is a thriving institution

that functions through 13 divisions: the Elizabeth McDowell Lewis College of Business, the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Information Technology and Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Health Professions, the College of Science, the Marshall University Graduate College, the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, University College, the School of Extended Education and the Graduate School of Education and Professional Development. Enrollment at Marshall University is about 14,000, and in spring 2007 more than 2,600 degrees were awarded at the university’s 170th commencement. Several major construction projects have been completed in recent years at Marshall University. Among those are the John Deaver Drinko Library and Information Center, which has a 24-hour study center and more than 250 computers available for student use; the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University; the Robert C. Byrd Center for Rural Health; the Jomie Jazz Center; a 1,000-space parking garage, a 500-bed residential housing complex, and the Harless Dining Hall. In 2007, the $48 million Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center opened, as did a $22 million Clinical

Education and Outreach Center on the site of the former Fairfi eld Stadium – past football home of the Marshall Thundering Herd. Additionally, a $94 million public-private project is underway on the Huntington campus. Main components of the plan are two new living/learning residence halls, which will open in time for the fall 2008 semester, and a 123,000 square-foot student recreation center, which is projected to open in January 2009. New baseball and softball fi elds also are included in the project. As Marshall continues to expand its campus for future growth, its attention remains on the individual student. A quality education begins with an outstanding faculty. As a state-supported university, fi nancial assistance is a distinct advantage at Marshall. About 60 percent of the university’s students receive fi nancial assistance through grants, loans, student employment and/or academic scholarships, with annual fi nancial aid awards exceeding $92 million. Academic possibilities abound at Marshall with 97 degree programs, including 46 on the baccalaureate level and 42 on the master’s level. Marshall provides a variety of academic options that give students a solid foundation for future success. Among them are exciting study-abroad opportunities, with more than 125 programs off ered in 35 countries. Marshall’s fundamental mission is to make public higher education available to all qualifi ed individuals, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnicity or creed. Through special programs such as the Higher Education for Learning Problems (H.E.L.P.) program and the West Virginia Autism Training Center, Marshall provides exclusive learning opportunities for people who otherwise might be denied a college education. The John Hall Center for Academic Excellence highlights Marshall’s commitment to undergraduate education of the highest quality for outstanding students. Designed to provide academic opportunities and challenges, the center houses the John Marshall Scholars program and the prestigious Society of Yeager Scholars, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. While course work is demanding, the atmosphere in which classes are conducted is casual and friendly, with a student-faculty ratio of 20 to 1. Marshall professors take special care to get to know each student and take pride in their students’ accomplishments. There is a genuine feeling of community spirit among the faculty, students and staff that makes Marshall a very special

Why Marshall University?Former Players Talk About Playing for the Thundering

Herd

“I had the opportunity to play against excellent competition that enabled me to earn All-American Honors. I also chose Marshall because of Coach Feaganes’ resume and his ability to improve my golf game.” Jonathan Clark

Honorable Mention All-America 1996, 2001 W.Va. Open Champion

“I chose Marshall because of Coach Feaganes’ straight-forwardness during recruiting, the strength of their schedule and the competitiveness of the team. I was looking to stay close to home and Marshall off ered some very good academic programs. With the golf tradition at Marshall I was able to follow in the footsteps of several great players.”Pat Carter

All-Southern Conference 1990, 11-time W.Va. Amateur Champion

“ I really loved the campus and the school. Coaches have always had a great infl uence on my life, but Coach Joe Feaganes was the biggest one of all.”Scott Davis

1976 NCAA Long Drive Champion, Former W.Va. Amateur and Open Champion

“First of all, the University was laid out nicely, not spread out. The student enrollment was large, but not too big, and Marshall had an excellent business school. Secondly, Coach Feaganes sold me on the idea of being a part of the Marshall Golf Tradition, competing against the best from the Big Ten and MAC, and the chance to be a part of a team that would be in the NCAA Championships!”Harold Payne

Honorable Mention All-America 1975 and 1976

“Marshall provided me with an opportunity to play right away. We played a great schedule, the weather was good and the school was the right fi t for me. Also, Coach Feaganes was a major reason I chose Marshall. He was a great coach and he taught me a lot about not only golf, but life.”Tom Kies

Honorable Mention All-America 1988, Southern Conference Medalist

Head coach Joe Feaganes is in his 40th year at the helm of the Thundering Herd golf program, and plans to retire at the end of the 2012 season. Under Feaganes’ leadership, the Marshall golf program has always been competitive in its conference and has even attained national recognition and respect throughout the world of collegiate golf.

Feaganes, 67, who is the Director of Golf and head men’s coach, was also the head women’s coach during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, when Marshall reinstated its women’s program which was discontinued after the 1982-83 season. He has also served the athletic department in a

number of other capacities as well; he was the fi rst ever Big Green Executive Director from 1977-86, and an Assistant/Associate Athletic Director from 1986-92 (duties included compliance, team travel for football and basketball, home game administration, and facilities). Feaganes’ contributions to collegiate golf have not gone unnoticed. In January of 1999, Feaganes was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association

of America (GCAA) Hall of Fame at the organization’s annual convention in Orlando, Fla. He was president of the GCAA in 2003 and 2004, and a member of the GCAA National Advisory Board from 1998-2006. In October 2000, the veteran head coach and former Marshall golfer received yet another honor, when he was inducted into the Marshall

University Athletic Hall of Fame. Feaganes, who was Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 1992, was

chairman of the NCAA National Golf Committee from 1985-1990. Feaganes was chosen as coach of the United States team in the annual USA vs. Japan collegiate all-star matches held in December of 1985 in Tokyo, Japan. He also served for two years on the NCAA District III Golf Advisory Committee and four years as chairman of the District IV Committee. Feaganes has served on the Southern Conference Golf Committee, the Mid-American Conference Golf Executive Commitee and the NCAA/USGA Collegiate Relations Committee. In addition to this, Feaganes has served as team leader for the United States team in the 2000, 2001, and 2002 U.S./Japan Matches. He has also been the assistant coach/team manager for the U.S. Palmer Cup Team (2003 and 2004), and in 2005, was the Tournament Director for the Palmer Cup. The Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-type competition between U.S. Collegiate All-Americans vs. European college players. Feaganes posted impressive credentials while playing golf for the Thundering Herd from 1964-66. He was captain in both his junior and senior years, and won the Mid-American Conference individual crown in 1966 while leading the Herd to a team championship. After graduating from Marshall in 1967 with a B.A. degree in Physical Education and Speech he continued to remain active in amateur golf. He qualifi ed for the 1968 U.S. Amateur, and in 1975 was the runner-up in the West Virginia Amateur. He was also named to the Virginia’s team in the 1975 Virginia’s vs. Carolina’s team matches. Feaganes was born and spent his grade school years in Catlettsburg, Ky., but graduated from Huntington Vinson High School in 1962. Aside from being an outstanding high school golfer, Feaganes also lettered in football, basketball and track. He was a high school football and basketball offi cial for 17 years, offi ciating many West Virginia state playoff games. Feaganes has two daughters: Jodi Ann (Mrs. Bundy McGinnis) and Jill Marie. Both are Marshall graduates. He is married to the former Diane Nelson Walker and has a granddaughter Maddie and a grandson Jackson. 2011-12 Preview

The Marshall University golf team enters every season with three major goals in mind; 1.) win the annual Marshall Invitational; 2.) win the conference championship; amd 3.) qualify for the NCAA Championship.

After a fairly productive fall season, with a veteran squad returning plus a couple of talented newcomvers, Coach Feaganes feels this year’s edition of the Thundering Herd could be “pretty good.”

“We have a good mix of experience and youth, which should create a lot of competition for playing time,” Feaganes said. “We were somewhat disappointed with our play in the fall and will strive for more consistency in the spring. We have a tough schedule and a strong conference so we had better step it up!”

Senior Bosten Miller (Charleston, W.Va.) led the team in the fall with a 71.36 stroke average. Miller won the UK/Bluegrass Invitational, tied for 4th at Marshall and tied for tenth at the Cardinal Invitational.

‘Bosten is solid, and I expect him to continue to improve during the spring,” Feaganes said.

Sophomore Brian Anania (Hurricane, W.Va.) played well in the fall averaging a 73.21 stroke average that was second-best on the team. Anania also recorded two top-20 fi nishes in the Marshall and Louisville Invitationals. “B.A. is a grinder,” commented Feaganes. “You can always count on him.”

Junior Nathan Kerns (Ironton, Ohio) led the team in stroke

average (74.23) as a freshman, and posted a 73.36 average in the fall. “Nathan is solid as a rock and I anticipate a strong Spring season from him.”

Senior Carson Schambach (Glen Dale, W.Va.) is a returning letterman from last year who Coach Feaganes believes will challenge for a spot in the lineup come Spring.

RS-Freshman Tas Sipowski (Jupiter, Fla.), sophomore Jeremy

Rogers (Buckhannon, W.Va.), sophomore Marshall Hone (Wheeling, W.Va.), and freshman Jake Miller (Pataskala, Ohio) round out the Herd’s roster.

Sipowski played in four of the fi ve fall events and averaged 75.36. “Tas has been a valuable addition to our team and is such a competitor. He will continue to get better as he gains more experience and confi dence.”

Rogers was in the lineup for all fi ve fall events and had a 76.71 average. “Jeremy gained some valuable experience in the fall and will do well for us this spring.”

Jake Miller didn’t make the lineup for the fall, but Feaganes feels he has a chance to contribute this spring. “Jake is a hard worker.” Hone was a recent addition to this spring’s squad.

“We will be competitive! Our record was 38-34-2 in the fall, and we expect to be better in the spring,” says Feaganes. “Our ultimate goal is to qualify for the NCAA Championship, and in order to do that every player will need to take his game a step up.”

Why the Thundering Herd?

What’s in a name? “Thundering Herd” has long been recognized by sports enthusiasts as one of the great, distinctive nicknames in college athletics. But on several occasions throughout Marshall’s history other nicknames have been suggested and, on occasion, been hung on the school. The first nickname of record is Indians, a moniker bestowed upon the pre-1900 athletic teams. By 1903, sparked by the color of team uniforms, Big Green began to be used in reference to Marshall athletics. Criticized by some from its inception as being boring, Big Green was soon ripe for replacement. When The Herald-Dispatch sportswriter Duke Ridgley referred to some a late-1920s squad as a Thundering Herd, after a then-current movie based on the 1925 Zane Grey novel of the same name, it caught on quickly. Both Thundering Herd and Big Green have been used in reference to Marshall ever since. It didn’t take long, however, for Thundering Herd to draw criticism as well. Some folks thought it inappropriate since it came with connotations of the western plains and didn’t represent West Virginia or founding father John Marshall. One suggested nickname, which never caught on, would have honored John Marshall by calling the school’s teams the Judges. Huntington Advertiser sportswriter Doug Freutal (perhaps to combat the notoriety competitor Ridgley received for “Thundering Herd”?) in 1933 started calling Marshall teams the Boogercats (referring to Scotland’s Bogie Cats, a “fl eet, elusive, courageous” animal) and some other scribes followed in using that nickname. Freutal complained that Thundering Herd made one think of “cows stampeding down a country road,” but many people thought Boogercats stirred up worse images than that. The Boogercat controversy sparked the Marshall alumni association to hold a special meeting, in which a vote was taken to refer to the school teams as the Thundering Herd for the time being – but that a study should be undertaken to fi nd a mascot that had a connection with the school or West Virginia. Despite Freutal’s attempts to keep Boogercat alive for the next couple of years, Thundering Herd and Big Green remained the commonly used nicknames until 1958. That year the Marshall student body, without input from the faculty, administration or alumni, decided that two nicknames wouldn’t do and held a vote to settle the issue. Along with Thundering Herd and Big Green, one group of students bought a turkey as a suggested mascot and promoted the name Green Gobblers. The students voted on Big Green as the nickname, but the media continued to use Thundering Herd to refer to

▲ Marshall’s mascot, Marco (an American Bison), won the national

championship for college mascots in 1992.

the teams. In the fall of 1964 Marshall president Stewart Smith appointed a faculty-student committee to suggest a more permanent nickname, feeling that Big Green denoted no action and was not appropriately symbolic. The nine-member committee narrowed its field to Big Green, Thundering Herd and Rams, which had been suggested by Huntington businessman Leonard Samworth, a past president of the alumni association. On January 5, 1965, over 85 percent of the Marshall students picked Thundering Herd above the others and chose the buff alo as the offi cial mascot and green and white as the offi cial school colors. The athletic fundraising organization took on the name Big Green, and Rams was left by the wayside along with Judges, Indians and, of course, Boogercats.

Outdoor Golf Facilities

The Marshall golf team is fortunate to have playing and practice privileges at many fi ne courses in the Huntington area. Without the support and cooperation of all these golf facilities, it would be diffi cult for the Herd to fi eld a golf team.

Guyan Golf and Country Club has been Marshall’s home course for more than 50 years. It has served as the site of numerous tournaments throughout the years, including the Marshall Invitational.

“It helps our program tremendously to have the use of outstanding facilities such as these,” says Herd coach Joe Feaganes. “Each course off ers a diff erent challange and helps prepare us for the many situations we face in tournament competition.”

ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES

Marshall University is taking the lead in preparing its student-athletes for life after intercollegiate athletics. The program responsible in seeing the athletes succeed is the Buck Harless Student-Athlete Program. The program was established in 1981 after a generous fi nancial contribution from Mingo County businessman Buck Harless. The program’s purpose is to aid all Marshall student-athletes in their academic endeavors while evaluating their athletic eligibility. Marshall athletes have access to tutors, academic counselors and computer labs to assist them in their academic pursuits. There have been more than 500 academic all-conference selections since the program’s inception and a great deal of those academic standouts have earned national acclaim. For instance, several Marshall football players have earned Academic All-District honors and All-America honors and the football team has been recognized by the American Football Coaches Association repeatedly for its high graduation rates. One of Marshall’s proudest academic moments came in 1999 when quarterback Chad Pennington, an Academic All-American, earned the National Football Foundation’s prestigious Vincent DePaul Draddy Award that is presented annual to the top student-athlete in all of college football. In 2006, Marshall University placed 166 student-athletes on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.0 or better) - second only to Rice University’s 174 members. That number continues to climb as Marshall placed more than 180 student-athletes on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2007. The student-athlete label says it all; college athletes are students fi rst and foremost. At Marshall University that philosophy is impressed upon all the Thundering Herd athletes by their coaches, instructors and fellow students.

Strength and Conditioning

A TYPICAL WORK-OUT SCHEDULE FOR MARSHALL’S GOLF TEAM

Marshall University’s golf conditioning program focuses on injuryprevention through cardiovascular and strength training. Aswith any conditioning program, athletes start out light and worktheir way up, and at Marshall each athlete is closely monitoredand given a program to help them with their individual needs. Thundering Herd golfers improve their cardiovascular fi tnessby using stationary bikes, stairmasters or steppers for 20-30 minutesa day, three or more days a week, with the intensity increasingas the season approaches. At Marshall, golf strength training is focused on fl exibility, core muscles and golf-specifi c work-outs. Marshall’s golf team, in a typicalwork-out, will handle three sets of 8-12 repetitions on machineleg presses, leg extensions, lying leg curls, and do 12-18 repititionsof calf raises to improve thier leg strength. Also, ThunderingHerd golfers complete three sets of 6-10 repititions on a low backmachine and do three sets of at least 20 crunches, along withwork on the upper and lower abs and with the med ball. In addition to this, Marshall’s strength and training staff s encourageproper nutrition that translates into more energy and acompetitive edge on the course. During the course of the year the Marshall University GolfTeam goes through a mandatory 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursdaystrength and conditioning program that is specifi callydesigned to improve the team’s overall performance. The most intense concentration of work-outs occur after theFall season and through the winer months. A lighter work-outschedule is maintained throughout the golf season. Listed below is information on training areas that should beaddressed and avoided by golfers.

Dr. Stephen J. Kopp became the 36th President of Marshall

University in July 2005. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has been very profi cient in acquiring grant funding, and has authored more than one hundred scientifi c papers.

Dr. Kopp earned his B.S. at the University of Notre Dame majoring in Biology and his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois in the fi eld of Physiology and Biophysics.

His academic career has included leadership positions with Midwestern University, Central Michigan University and Ohio University. As an administrator,

he was the founding dean of both the College of Allied Health Professions at Midwestern University, and The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions at Central Michigan University, and recently served as the provost of Ohio University.

West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III refers to the leadership that President Kopp has brought to West Virginia as “placing Marshall University fi rmly on the path for future academic growth, positioning the university to be an engine of economic growth in our state and region.”

In addition to serving as Marshall’s President, Dr. Kopp also serves on the boards of

the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, the Huntington Area Development Council, the Huntington Museum of Art, the Marshall Artists Series, Advantage Valley, the West Virginia Roundtable, and the Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research and Innovation Center (MATRIC).

In his spare time, he enjoys Marshall athletics, reading, golf and spending time with his wife of 35 years, Jane. He also enjoys time with his devoted dog, Abby.

He and Jane have two adult children and two grandchildren.

Mike Hamrick, director of athletics at the University of Nevada-

Las Vegas for six years and a 1980 graduate of Marshall University, was named director of athletics at Marshall University by President Stephen J. Kopp on July 20, 2009.

“In Mike Hamrick, we identifi ed an outstanding leader for our athletic program, an individual of uncompromising integrity, experience and accomplishment,” Kopp

said. “He brings to Marshall University a vision for athletics that we can all embrace and support. His proven experience and accomplishments unequivocally demonstrate his ability to translate vision into action that leads to success. I cannot emphasize enough the value that this individual brings to our university and community. An added, but by no means less important quality of this individual is that he is a proud and successful Son of Marshall.”

Hamrick played football at Marshall University from 1976 to 1980, starting at linebacker and defensive end his last two years. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in education from Marshall, he earned his master’s in sports administration from Ohio University in 1981.

Prior to his position at UNLV, Hamrick was director of athletics at East Carolina University from 1995 to 2003. He also has been AD at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, assistant AD at Illinois State in Normal, Ill., and assistant AD at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.

“It’s great to be back home,” Hamrick said. “I am thrilled to be rejoining the Marshall University family and plan to work hard to help advance the success of Thundering Herd athletics in all facets. I thank President Kopp for giving me this opportunity.”

Hamrick is a native of Clendenin, W.Va., and a graduate of Herbert Hoover High School. He and Soletta are the parents of three children - twin sons, Brett and Justin, and daughter, Mollie Ann.
