First and the foremost thing is to know, if you are using the right equipment for your finish quality as well as for the desired efficiency levels. Secondly, to know, if you are using the equipment in the right manner to the best of its abilities. There is a general belief that if I purchase the equipment of a reputed brand, I should get the best results. We hardly try to understand the technical limitations of the equipment and the best working range the equipment can offer. Many a times the equipment sellers do not openly tell you the technical limitations of equipment as sometimes they themselves do not know being traders. So it becomes a bigger responsibility of the Paint Shop Managers to understand from the literature available or from the internet etc to know such details before taking a buying decision. In many paint-shops, we observe good branded equipment being installed, the operating range of a paint pressure regulator is 0 – 17 bar. The customer needs to operate at about 1.20 – 1.6 bar. It becomes highly impossible to set the pressure right. And the paint flow either goes very high or fluctuates in lower range. So naturally the painters are setting the pressures on higher side and spray resulting in utilizing higher than required air pressures and still not creating proper atomization, to get lot many paint film defects like orange peel. Also the transfer efficiency drops drastically and resulting more paint wastage. More paint wastage ultimately transforms into higher spray booth maintenance and higher waste disposal cost. What to BUY, is the most difficult question & the answer lies in knowing your requirements technically correct vis-à-vis the technologies available in the market. It is also important to understand your existing & future requirements. To understand the plus & minus points of the equipment , calculate the ROI on the basis of theoretical savings which can be offered by the equipment and then budget the equipment . Normally we have a budget & that becomes the starting point of our buying process. Some more points which effect or affect the buying process are ? The equipment in use – if good, you try to repeat or else select a different one. ? The Painters' comfort levels with the equipment – unfortunately in India we have scarcity of good painters with sound technical knowledge. They do have a great resistance to change the process or equipment. Paint shop managers are sometimes helpless in this situation and take the equipment buying decision in their favour. ? Sometimes, the paint supplier dictates the equipment selection. They also do not want to take any risk of suggesting the newer technologies or equipment. At times, more paint wastage means more business to them. ? The most important of all is OUR IGNORANCE ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGIES available. We hardly dedicate time for our knowledge building about the equipment. The Paint Technologist in shops feel the equipment is totally a maintenance responsibility Equipment Selection Process ? It is advantageous to select the equipment with complete understanding & knowledge ? Taking assistance from the information available on Internet & through the literature of various brands ? News Update :

NICT conducts In-house Training program for Painters & Supervisors.

NICT team has conducted a Basic level Training Program for TVS Motorcycle plant personnel. This program included Theory of Painting as well as online skill development & basic awareness of Paint Application Technology. The course was aimed at qualifying the skill sets & upgrading the same in the desired directions. All the candidates were then evaluated for Theoretical Knowledge as well as Spraying techniques on flat surfaces & actual jobs. The rating / gradation for them was as per the pre-decided norms & was well accepted by the operators. In spite of the language barrier, the program was a great success. Team TVS & Team NICT will closely watch the performance of these operators in the future & look out for betterment.

In this issue of CoatingBhaskar we will discuss the significance and method for evaluating adhesion of coatings on surfaces. The adhesion of any coating on the surface is most important aspect of finishing. If a coating system is expected to last long and protect the surface it is important that it sticks to the surface for the expected life. A particular coat or coating system passes through various phases of conversion leading the loss of flexibility and increased hardness. This increases in hardness and reduced flexibility occurs all along. For a good adhering coating system the film must also possess good flexibility. For quite obvious reasons the testing on mandrels is often regarded as flexibility and adhesion test – conical mandrel test. The adhesion is characteristic of coating composition that affects the flexibility, the long term life of coating and affected by factors such as surface preparation and pre-treatment of the surfaces.

The test methods for evaluating adhesion are destructive tests and hence must be carried out carefully for products that may be rejected for other aspects or defects. It is good practice to test first few products for adhesion at the start of shift or day and continue only if the adhesion has been found satisfactory. In case of all coating the products can be retested after aging ( 24 / 48 or 72 hrs). The adhesion can improve after aging of the coating as well. The methods followed are X-cut (ASTM D 3359 Method A) or cross-cutting (ASTM D 3359 Method B) by a sharp blade / Tool followed by application of adhesive tape and snatching at right angle. The cutting is an important aspect of testing and the blade must be moved keeping the cutting edge vertically upright. Adhesion of coating system is often tested on fresh painted products or after subjecting the system through tests like exposure to salt spray, boiling water, water immersion or humidity.

Reporting of the results is equally important for evaluating or investing the paint system comprising number of coats. The failure at a particular level must be reported like loss of adhesion on the substrate indicates poor cleaning;

loss of adhesion between coatings is indication of lack of inter-coat adhesion due to many obvious reasons. Hence loss of adhesion for the system is to be reported carefully. The adhesion is tested on dry surfaces, cooled to room temperature for sufficient duration and normal standard ambient conditions. The laboratory testing of panels is under controlled conditions and should be tested carefully. As a practice any laboratory panel subjected to exposure to humidity or salt spray test, the edge area of panels is spared for testing.

Use of standard adhesion tape is another important parameter in addition to storage of tape and its life. While testing, use fresh tape portion only. Standards followed for evaluating adhesion are numerous as per IS 101, ISO2409, ASTM D 3359.
