About The City of Kemah

Kemah is named for the Indian word meaning “wind in my face.” Located on Galveston Bay, where a constant breeze and endless family entertainment abound; we are only 25 minutes south of Houston, 25 minutes north of Galveston in the Bay Area. Whether it’s water sports, dining, shopping, or just wanting somewhere to spend the day, Kemah, Texas is the place. The city of Kemah is a small community, and the friendliness and open arms of the people who live and work here is unlike any other.

Hello Everyone and welcome to the 2012 Memorial Hermann Kemah Triathlon! This year we have over 1,700 registered to race which is a 350 increase from 2011. This year’s race has a number of improvements including a one-day race combining both the sprint and Olympic races, a better, faster, more organized boat start for the Olympic swim, a faster/straighter bike course, and a run course that is even safer for athletes and opens more traffic flow throughout the city of Kemah.

We are very excited for this year’s races. Kemah is our Superbowl and we cannot wait to provide you all a race to remember for years to come! We still need volunteers and we always need lots of spectators out there to line the race course’s ins-and-outs and finish line to cheer on every racer out there giving their all. Thank you for your support!

Event Parking

There will be no charge for parking to anyone arriving prior to 10am on Sunday the 29th. The Kemah Boardwalk has been very generous by allowing us to parking in their lots. Please respect that by either visiting the boardwalk after the triathlon or helping us to free up their parking before noon. We would prefer that athletes park in the order of the numbers on the map below. You may use Kipp or Bradford to access the parking lots. VIP lots are meant for sponsors, Elites/Pros, Onurmark Coordinators, and Onurleft Sports Athletes. All other athletes are expected to park in the other green lots numbered 1-3 below. We will start with 3 and work to 1 as they fill. If we fill all of those lots overflow parking is located near the base of the bridge and/or in the grass along Carolyn Street on the other side of 146.

Boat Loading Procedures

The Olympic distance triathlon will be a boat start. The Colo-nel Paddlewheel boat from Moody Gardens will dock at the Kemah Boardwalk on Saturday night, April 28, 2012. Load-ing at the north end of the Kemah Boardwalk will begin at 5:00am and END AT 6:00am on Sunday morning.

IF YOU ARE NOT ON THE BOAT BY 6:00AM YOU WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. DO NOT BE LATE! THERE IS NOTH-ING WE CAN DO IF YOU MISS THE BOAT.

Follow the map (right) to the loading zone. The loading zone is approximately 1/4 mile from transition so allow at the very least 30 minutes for walking and loading. Be sure to bring as little as possible. We will have a couple coolers of water and Gatorade on the dock outside the boat for those that would like to fill their bottles. This year you will be aloud to bring a plastic water bottle on board with you.

There will be bathrooms on the boat in case of emergen-cies but all participants should use the rest room before boarding the boat. Once you’ve boarded the boat you will not be permitted to leave. Anything left on the boat will be trashed or donated to charity. It is about a 30 minute boat ride from the docks to the swim start. We recommend waiting until the boat is well on its way out before putting your wetsuit on as the weather will most likely be warm and you do not want to overheat.

Pro/Amateur Elite Invitational Olympic Wave Starts

Olympic Boat Start

Once the boat arrives at the swim start some 1500 me-ters from the swim exit Captain Joe will anchor the Colo-nel and the race will be ready to begin. The pro/amateur invitational wave starts will go first. Males (gold caps) start at 6:45am. One minute after the males go off the female pros/elites will dive in.

Both of the pro/amateur waves will start by holding onto the outside railing of the boat and diving in head first. Four minutes after the female pro/elite wave goes off the rest of the field will begin their time trial start at 6:50am.

Once the athletes are on board the Colonel they will be taken nearly 1 mile offshore into Galveston Bay where they will exit the boat in a time trial manner (2-6 at a time) jump-ing from the edge of the boat (3-5 feet high). As each ath-lete exits onto the bow of the boat they will cross a timing mat. Once their timing chip (attached to ankle) crosses the mat their time begins so exiting the boat quickly, but safely, is essential. From the boat it’s a straight swim following the buoy line all the way to the Kemah shoreline.

How fast do you think we can unload 800 athletes from the boat? Improving on last year we will have 2 exit points and better timing that will have mats picking up athletes as they leap. This means we’ll be able to clear the boat much faster than last year. Our goal is to have everyone in the water with 10 min. That means NO HESITATION! As you approach the edge have your area of water you’re jump-ing to picked out and leap to it with your hands on your goggles to hold them in place. Once you’re in the water start swimming immediately to clear the way for the next jumper. There is very little, if any, time between jumping athletes so everyone’s got to pick their spot, jump to it, and start swimming the second they hit the water. Those athletes that hesitate will be cleared to the back of the line and given another chance to jump once everyone else has left the boat.

Page 19: 2012 Memorial Hermann Kemah Triathlon Digital Guide

Olympic Pros/Elites Diving Wave Start & Age Grouper Time Trial Start

Although competitors will be sorted and corralled according to race numbers (age groups), all athletes on the boat will be jumping off in time trial fashion and will all have the same color swim caps. There are no official “wave starts.” Remember, time trial means you cross the mat, your time starts, you jump and swim for shore.

Unlike the Olympic Distance Triathlon the 500 meter Sprint Distance will be an in water start from buoys at the end of a dock and will be a clockwise rectangle having 8 waves of swimmers all with different color swim caps.

22 Kemah Triathlon - Sunday, April 29, 2012 - www.KemahTri.com

We have made some great changes to the bike course(s) this year. We have chosen to return to using 7th street to exit from transition to Highway 146. We will loop all cyclists under 146 via the underpass in North Kemah that goes under the Kemah Bridge (146). We also take the Olympic bike course all the way south into Texas City and use Highway 197 to extend the far ends of the course instead of using 96 and League City.

1. All athletes will exit transition on the south side of the parking lot on Harris Street. The bike in/out chute will go from Har-ris to 7th street before athletes are allowed to mount their bike on the mount/dismount line under the big inflatable.

2. Athletes are to mount their bikes after the mount/dismount line. Those mounting by putting their leg over while not mov-ing should go past the line and pull as far to the right as possible to make way for those that run and jump onto their bike to mount. Please be sure to have your gears set to easy so that you can effectively and quickly mount your bike.

3. Once on 7th athletes will then turn right into the right hand lane of Highway 146.4. After a very short distance heading north on 146 cyclists will exit (before the Kemah Bridge) so that they can follow the

cones and loop around under the bridge to rejoin Highway 146 heading south in the right hand lane.5. Once heading south on Highway 146 cyclists will do so for 6 miles (Sprint) or 10 miles (Olympic) before making a turn.6. Just before the Dickinson Bayou Bridge on Highway 146 sprint athletes will exit the highway and follow the cones to loop

under the bridge (146) and rejoin heading back north towards Kemah. Olympic distance athletes will not exit but con-tinue south on 146 over the Dickinson Bayou Bridge into Texas City and to 197.

7. Olympic distance riders will turn right on 197 and go down about 2 miles before making a u-turn and coming back to Highway 146. The u-turn will be taken in the last media break before the light and Highway 3. BE AWARE: Be extra cautious on the 197 area of the course. There is a golf course about 1 mile down 197 before the turn-around. There will be plenty of police presence on the course but it never hurts for athletes to be extra careful when out there. The intersection of the 146 feeder and 197 will be busy as well. Just be on alert and be paying extra close attention. When u-turning this will be the only part of the course where cyclists will be in the left lane. ALL OLYMPIC DISTANCE CYCLISTS ARE TO USE THE LEFT LANE OF 197 AFTER THE U-TURN WHEN HEADING EAST BACK TO 146. THIS IS THE ONLY SECTION OF THE ENTIRE COURSE WHERE THE LEFT LANE IS USED BY CYCLISTS. OTHERWISE ALWAYS USE THE RIGHT LANE. SPRINT COURSE ATHLETES ALWAYS USE THE RIGHT LANE.

8. Once cyclists make there way back to 146 via 197 the will have to turn left under 146 and cross 2 lanes of traffic. This should not be a problem as there will be Texas City officers there to control vehicular traffic.

9. Turn left off 197 onto the 146 feeder. Stay in the right lane, all the way back to Kemah.10. Riders will remain on the feeder for about a mile before the feeder permanently merges back with the main highway.11. Follow 146 all the way back to Kemah.12. All athletes turn right on 7th street and dismount bikes on the line then run them through the chute into transition.

One month before participating in his first Ironman, Ryan Almon strained his back. Suddenly his dream of crossing the finish line faded and his rigorous training seemed wasted.

Because the 37-year-old triathlete had recently completed performance testing at the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at Memorial Hermann, he called Kim Gandler, a sports biomechanist on the Institute’s human performance team. What Almon received from the Institute was intense physical therapy and unexpected encouragement that allowed him to complete the Florida Ironman in 13 hours, 50 minutes.

“Three weeks prior to Ironman, I couldn’t even get on the bike,” said Almon. “I could swim and run, but the physical act of leaning over was too painful.”

A visit with William Mosi Jones, M.D., a sports medicine-trained physician affiliated with the Institute and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, revealed that Almon had several bulging discs, including one that was herniated 15 millimeters.

Therapy with Memorial Hermann physical therapists Talal Hariri, D.P.T., and Franz Valenzuela, D.P.T., provided exercises to lessen Almon’s pain. Dr. Valenzuela also coached Almon on how to identify and avoid dysfunctional movement patterns that triggered his pain.

“With each session, I improved,” said Almon. “More than anything, the staff at the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at Memorial Hermann gave me the confidence and knowledge that I was capable of competing.”

Gandler said the Institute’s work with athletes covers both the physical and mental preparation to perform.

Transitioning to triathlonsYears earlier, because of back problems, Almon was encouraged by his primary care physician to lose weight and strengthen his core muscles. As a result, he started running marathons, completing the first one alongside his father. He also biked the BP MS 150.

So in 2009 when a coworker persuaded him to participate in a triathlon, it seemed like a logical progression. After that sprint triathlon, Almon progressed to an Olympic distance event and then a half Ironman before he decided to attempt the Florida Ironman in November 2011.

Laughing at how he swam the breaststroke rather than freestyle in his first eight triathlons, the outgoing Almon said it’s not his main goal to better his time with each triathlon.

Instead, he enjoys participating at whatever speed he can and relishing the moment.

“Nothing compares with crossing the finish line of an Ironman,” said Almon as he looks forward to racing in eight triathlons in 2012, including Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas.

“With each race, I’ve been underprepared, but that has given me the motivation to

improve my fitness level, to do better and train more for the next event,” said the school yearbook sales representative who has lost 60 pounds over the last five years.

Smarter training is what led Almon to undergo performance testing at the Institute while preparing for the Florida Ironman. He has recently started using the results of his lactate threshold profile to help him train for his first event of 2012, the Memorial Hermann Kemah Triathlon.

“Lactate threshold is based on different things, but for me it’s about monitoring my heart rate so I don’t burn out before hitting the finish line,” he said.

“When you know your lactate threshold, you can train your body to make less lactate and clear it faster, which can increase your performance,” added Gandler.

Almon also underwent the Kcal/hour test at the Institute. This test measures expended calories per hour while running and cycling, so an athlete can determine nutritional needs. Penny Wilson, Ph.D., a registered dietician on the Institute’s human performance team, counseled Almon on ways to better fuel his body.

A circle of encouragementThese days, Almon trains upwards of 15 hours weekly. The encouragement he received has gone full circle as he convinced

his 68-year-old father to join him in a triathlon last year. In 2012, Almon’s triathlons will be a family affair. His dad will join him in three races while his brother, sister and mom will complete the family trio by each competing in a single event.

“I was impressed with the testing at the Institute, but what

was more important was the support I received as a budding weekend athlete,” said Almon. “At Memorial Hermann, they were able to support me and tell me where I needed to be careful to meet the goals I set, because they are knowledgeable about the sports I’m participating in.”

28 Kemah Triathlon - Sunday, April 29, 2012 - www.KemahTri.com

As in past years this year’s run course will use Kipp Street, the Kemah Boardwalk, and the Kemah Bridge. One change for this year is that we will not be going under the Kemah Bridge into Clear Lake Shores and we will not be running on the Northbound side of 146 or looping under 146 on the Seabrook side of the Kemah Bridge. These changes should simplify the run course, make it safer, and also open up traffic flow on the highway and in the City of Kemah.

1. Runners will exit the south side of Transition this year instead of the east side.2. Turn left out of transition onto 7th Street. Porta-cans will be on your left & a hydration station will be on your right.3. Turn right on Kipp Avenue and proceed all the way into South Kemah.4. Turn right on Clien and go to 146 where you’ll make a u-turn and head back towards Kipp. There will be a hydra-

tion station just after the u-turn (close to mile 1).5. Turn left on Bayshore.6. Turn left on Bell Road.7. Turn right on Kipp Avenue and run North on Kipp all the way to the roller coaster where you will pickup another

hydration station around 7th street (close to mile 2).8. Turn right behind Starbucks and go under the roller coaster to connect with the boardwalk.9. Follow the cones around the boardwalk/shoreline towards the Aquarium and behind the parking garage.10. Follow the cones behind the parking garage and turn right into the marina parking lot just before Bradford.11. Follow the cones south through all marina parking lots running along side and parallel to Bradford. This is also the

place of our third hydration station (close to mile 3).12. Turn right and run through south side marina parking lot, parallel to 6th Street, to connect to Texas.13. Turn right on Texas and follow Texas around all parking lots to get near the base of the Kemah Bridge.14. Follow the cones to loop up onto the shoulder of 146 heading north up the Kemah Bridge. Near the bridge you will

hit a hydration station (close to mile 4 and mile 5).15. Once over the bridge and in Seabrook make a u-turn, before the exit ramp, and head back towards Kemah.16. On the way over the Bridge towards Seabrook you use the shoulder. On the way back to Kemah you run in

the right lane (against traffic) next to the shoulder. Runners have a line of cones separating them from each other and a line of barrels or larger channelizing devices separating them from vehicular traffic.

17. Once back over the bridge runners will follow the same path they took to the bridge to get back to the south side parking lot of the marina.

18. Turn right on Bradford and cross the Bradford & 6th Street intersection.19. Turn right onto 6th street and run in the right lane of traffic (coned off) against traffic.20. Turn left onto Harris Street and your finish!

About Your Timing ChipThis is what your timing chip will look like. You will receive this at packet pickup. The chip is disposable and will come with a disposable strap. When fitting the strap to your left ankle be sure to not make it too tight or too loose. A strap that is put on too tight may rub and irritate your ankle throughout the race. Those chips put on too loose will move around and also irritate and in worse case possibly even slip off. Put your chip and strap on just snug enough to have a little movement and be comfortable. The strap is not neoprene but is soft enough that it should not irritate your ankle. Once you button the strap you cannot remove it witouth scissors. You also want to be sure that you scan your chip on our reader mat during packet pickup to verify your information. If it all looks good you’re all set. If anything is incorrect we can fix that for you on site and get you on your way. If, for what-ever reason you do not scan your chip, do not worry. Scanning your chip is only available to give you piece-of-mind. If your participant information (website) is listed correctly then you’re all set. Also know that scanning your chip does not activate your chip in any way. Activation happens when you cross the mat during the swim on race morning. The chips and straps are all disposable. This means that if you pickup your packet and cannot make the race you do not need to mail the chip back. When you cross the finish line you do not need to have your chip removed. Simply remove it when you get home and throw it away.

Results - Available after the race at www.EZtoregister.com & www.KemahTri.comWe are planning on having three different methods to check your results. 1) Our huge results board with the sprint race on one side and the Olympic race on the other all sorted by age groups. 2) Kiosks that will have the ability to print a re-sults receipt based on your race number. 3) A scrolling digital screen with all the results listed in order of finishing time. If you have any issues please contact Gary Mulvihill with Run Wild Sports Timing - [email protected]

The Night BeforeEssential items for your race bag:

Wetsuit (if legal)Swim gogglesSuntan lotionBike shoesSocksHelmetSunglassesRun shoesHat or visorTowel Race recovery bottlesEnergy gels/barsToilet paperRace clothesRace numbersNumber BeltPlastic bags for rain cover

Race DayEarly bird gets the worm Know where you’re going, and give yourself time to get there. Get to the race early! There may be lines up to 45 minutes before the event. Rack your bike the day before if you can.

Attend the race briefing the day before and morning of the race. If you are new, then the race brief-ing is essential. It tells you what to expect during the race, and small changes that may have occurred. It also goes over the courses again which can be confusing especially if more than one distance is being run simultaneously.

The Expo Pickup your packet if you haven’t already and walk around and get into the spirit of the race.

Transitions Walk from the swim finish to the tran-sition entrance to your bike. Walk from your bike to the bike transition exit. Walk from your bike to the run exit. Do it again .

Lay out your transition area on your bed the night before to ensure you have everything. Bring a sports bag to pack gear into the triathlon venue.

Transition Setup TipsRack and secure your bike the day before if you can make it out to pre race bike check-in. Find your number on the racks and rack your bike by the back of the seat on that number.

Place a bath towel on the ground parallel to my bike.

Take race belt with number for run and place running shoes on top of number (some will safety pin their number on their shirt, but putting on a dry shirt while you’re wet is very hard to do.

Make sure that the tongue of your shoes and laces are open. Buy elastic laces for your shoes so you don’t have to fumble with tying laces. It will be harder than you think.

Place bike shoes on the towel directly behind running shoes. Loosen up the straps and ensure they’re open and ready…place socks inside

Place hydration for the bike on the bike and any for the run near your shoes.

Run through everything mentally to double-check and make sure that I haven’t forgotten anything. Now reset your bike computer if you have one.

Double-check to make sure your bike is in the right gear (small chain ring in front and a gear that you can easily push coming out of Transition One).

Other Pre-Race Preparation Warm up and stretch - enough to break a sweat and get the blood moving to your muscles. If you can, jump in and swim a few laps so you’re not jumping in cold. Stay warm in-between -- throw on a sweatshirt or jacket that you can hand off to a friend before you jump in.

Relax & Wait Use the time to warm up, then find a quiet place to relax. Warm up and stretch again before you start your race. Sip on water, but don’t overfill yourself - take in about 6 oz. H2O.

About the Onurmark Giving ChallengeOnurmark believes in giving athletes of all levels a competitive advantage, and we encourage you to strive for and reach your peak level of performance. This season, in addition to providing you an excellent racing experience, we are excited to support your racing success in yet another way. We invite you to participate in the Onurmark Giving Challenge. We have found that there is at least one characteristic that all athletes share, the desire to reach our finish line. Most often we have different motivations for doing so, yet we all have the same end result in mind – reaching the finish line.

Participating in the Onurmark Giving Challenge will provide you yet another way to reach that goal. Through this chal-lenge, you will be able to share your racing goal with your friends, family and community – perhaps in a way you never have before. You make them part of your success. You experience what most of us have at one point or another - sharing your goals with others makes them happen! With this challenge, we invite you to choose a Reason2Race. Select one of our six partner charities, and let racing for one of them make a difference for you!

Whatever your goal is for this triathlon: doing your first Sprint or Olympic tri, beating last year’s time, setting your Per-sonal Record (PR) – whatever it may be, take the Onurmark Giving Challenge and share your goal with your community and friends. Watch how including others in your journey has your success become a reality! If you have any questions or comments please contact Reason2Race at [email protected]

3. Fundraising. An athlete may begin fundraising only AFTER they have an official entry into one of the TX3 races. Q. What type of Triathlon is this and what are the distances?A: This is two distance event weekend consisting of a Sprint (1/2k Swim, 20k Bike, & 5k Run) and an Olympic (1.5k Swim, 40k Bike, 10k Run).

Q. How many years has this triathlon taken place?A: 2012 will be the 3rd year of the event.

Q. Who can participate in the triathlon?A: The race is open to professional triathletes, amateur elites, age group amateurs, and relay teams.

Q. How many entry spots are available to participants?A: The race is capped at 1,750 entries for 2012. This is a 800 limit for the Olympic Distance and 950 for the Sprint. This will be increasing each year as demand calls for it. For now this is primarily due to the capacity on the boat and the time constraints on the race course.

Q. Is this a good race for first-timers?A: The sprint race is a great event for first timers and other athletes of all levels. The Olympic event is a bit more chal-lenging not just because of the longer distances but due primarily to the boat start, windy bike, and run that finishes by going over and back on the Kemah Bridge. Beginners are welcome and will have a great time at either race.

Q. Where does the race take place?A: The race is held in and around the beautiful City of Kemah, Texas at the 6th Street Parking Lot at 6th and Bradford.

Q. When will the race take place?A: The race is usually in April. 2012’s date is Sunday, April 29.

Q. What is the weather and water temperature in early April in Kemah, Texas?A: Generally, the weather is lower to upper 80’s. The water temperature in the Bay is generally around 75-80 degrees.

Q. What is the TX3 Triathlon Race Series and how can I participate?A: The TX3 Triathlon Race Series consists of the Memorial Hermann Kemah, Bridgeland, and Houston Triathlons. Those wishing to do all 3 races may sign up for the entire series all at once and receive a discount on registration. Those registered for the series are also eligible for the rankings and awards at the end of the year. All those that that register for the series all at once or complete each race separately will receive a commemorative item.

Q. What is the best way to get around town?A: The best way to get around Kemah is to walk. The Kemah Boardwalk has many things to do and places to eat. Additionally, there is an amusement park and a lot of little shops throughout the city. Everything is easily within walking distance from hotels and transition.

Q. Where can I park on race day?A: Any parking lots that are open “should” be ok to park in. Please obey closed lots and signage. See parking map.
