a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the con-duct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Forty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all nine members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2010-11 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championships as Denison claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 64 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 207 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distrib-uted to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excel-lence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excel-lence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The Col-lege of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so hon-ored.
A member of the Na-tional Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competi-tion in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most of-fered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the con-ference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together

DENISON PICKED AS PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 28TH NORTH COAST WOMEN'S LACROSSE SEASON
CLEVELAND -- Denison emerged as the favorite in the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse preseason poll based on balloting from the league coaches.
The Big Red, who won their NCAC-leading 16th crown in 2011, earned six of seven available first-place votes from league coaches for 47 points. Wooster, which topped Kenyon in the 2010 NCAC Tournament championship game, was selected to finish second in the poll after earning the final first-place vote and totaling 37 points. The Big Red and Fighting Scots will be aiming for a rematch in the NCAC Tournament championship game in 2012. Kenyon (32) finished third in the poll, followed by Allegheny (31), Wittenberg (26), Ohio Wesleyan (14) and Oberlin (9).
The Denison offense returns three of its top five scorers from a year ago, including junior Alex Thurner (Cincinnati,
OH/Summit Country Day), who recorded 39 total points (32g, 7a). Junior Olivia Shiland (South Hamilton, MA/
Hamilton-Wenham) and junior Molly Sbrega (Portland, ME/Deering) are back as well, and will provide experience for the offense after collecting 38 points (30g, 8a) and 37 points (29g, 8a) last season, respectively. The Big Red are led by first-year head coach Kristin Ramey, who was named Denison's ninth head coach in June of 2011.
Denison leads all NCAC squads with 16 conference championships in 27 seasons (1985-1994, 1996 ,1999-2001 and 2011). Wooster has collected six conference titles (2002-04, 2007, 2009-10), while Oberlin has earned three (1995, 1997-98) and Ohio Wesleyan has garnered two (2005 and 2008).
