KAANIB PROJECTdescription

Objective:

• Poverty reduction in coconut-farming communities.

• The implementation of this project attempts to transform small coconutfarmers from subsistence farmers to agribusiness entrepreneurs.

• At the heart of the KAANIB project implementation is the Community-Based Organization (CBO) which shall be empowered and mobilized toserve as partner and conduit of PCA in its development efforts.

• The site with its CBO shall be assisted and maintained for a period ofthree (3) years until such time that the CBO could manage and sustainits own affairs.

ECM PROJECT

Description

•This is a DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) funded project which intends to produce purebred makapuno seedlings thru the embryo culture technology developed by PCA wherein said embryo will be extracted from makapuno nuts and grown under laboratory condition.

•The project was conceptualized by ARDB, PCA, Central Office and being implemented at PCA, Reg. IV-A in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, DA-RFU IV-A and DA-Quezon Agricultural Experiment Station (QAES) in Tiaong, Quezon where the laboratory is located. The project was launched in July 2011.

Objectives

•Upgrade and use the facilities at QAES as a research-based station for makapuno projects and for commercial production of ECM seedlings;

• Set-up an ECM mass production laboratory, make seedlings available and affordable to farmers of CALABARZON areas and reduce the prevailing cost of seedlings to at least 50%;

•Establish a comprehensive research on makapuno-galactomannan (thick liquid endosperm) as source of high end products that will encourage makapuno product utilization;

Accomplishment:

• 2,195 embryo cultured seedlings produced

• 1,742 seedlings available at the laboratory

• 441 seedlings at the screenhouse/ nursery

• 12 seedlings distributed

Republic Act 8048 description

• RA 8048 known as the “Coconut PreservationAct of 1995” is a law regulating the cutting ofcoconut trees, its replenishments andproviding penalties therefor and for otherpurposes. Its primary objectives are (1) toregulate the indiscriminate cutting ofproductive coconut trees and (2) to promotethe growth of the coconut industry byembarking on a sustainable and efficientreplanting program to replenish those that areallowed to be cut.
