Columbus metro area employment rose faster than
that of Ohio and U.S.: Columbus MSA employment
rose 7,600 (0.8%) in the second quarter, compared to
Ohio growth of 0.7% and U.S. growth of 0.2%.
Employment growth in the first half was 17,700 (1.9%)
for the MSA, 1.6% for Ohio, and 0.7% for the U.S.
Columbus Region unemployment rate down to
6.3%: The 11- -
adjusted unemployment rate fell to 6.3% in June,
compared to a 7.2% Ohio rate and an 8.2% U.S. rate.
The number of employed residents increased while the
number of active local job-seekers remained essentially
constant, leading to the decline in the unemployment
rate.
Gap remains between normal and actual labor force
growth: The difference between reported labor force
and the level assuming normal growth continues to
widen, indicating a growing overhang of discouraged
workers.

QUARTERLY ECONOMIC UPDATE | Q2 2012
GDP AND INFLATION
Slower growth in U.S. GDP and personal
consumption:
The preliminary estimate of U.S. Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) showed an annualized increase of
1.5% in the second quarter, less than the previous
Growth in personal consumption (70% of the
economy) was also 1.5%, its slowest in a year,
driven by slowing in purchases of consumer
durables. The Thomson Reuters/University of
Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment registered
a large drop in June and fell further in July.
U.S. GDP growth to remain below 2.5% into 2013:
The July Wall Street Journal economic forecasting
survey expected GDP growth to remain below 2.5%
into 2013. Economists continued to assign a low risk to
recession, but almost all said that it is more likely that
their forecast is too optimistic rather than too
pessimistic.
Overall inflation fell to 1.7%, but core inflation
(excluding food and energy items) continued to creep
upward and now stands at 2.3%.

2011 2012
The composition of projects in the pipeline has changed in
2012 compared to 2011. Existing business projects now
make up about 40 percent of projects active at any given
time, compared to 10-15 percent in 2011. Establishment of
Columbus 2020's Business Retention and Expansion team
has been a major factor. Industry composition has also
shifted. Office projects represent a greater share now. The
number of manufacturing projects has remained steady,
but the percent share has fallen from 59 to 44 percent. 6 5 7 10 8
