The Next Big Super Fruit Is Here!It may not be a household name yet, but the African fruit is being heavily marketed as the next big super fruit for its powerful antioxidant properties.
The baobab fruit comes from the baobab tree. It is sometime referred to as the tree of life! The baobab fruit has a velvety shell and is about the size of a coconut. It is very high in fibre and has 6 times as much vitamin C of oranges.
Fruitera Natures Best Crop Inc. based in Vaughan, Ontario are in discussions with a "number of leading food manufacturers" and will see the baobab fruit cubes in pastries, breads, granola bars and trail mixes and 73 % cocoa-covered baobab fruit cubes.
With an exotic, tangy flavor described as a cross between grapefruit, pear and vanilla, the baobab fruit has been used for years in Africa. Inside the coconut-sized shell, the fruit powder dehydrates naturally without the need for processing like heat extraction or freeze drying.
According to National Geographic, the "Vitamin Tree" fruit contains six times as much vitamin C as oranges and twice as much calcium as milk and is a good source of iron, potassium and magnesium.
It also has a low glycemic index with more fiber than apples, peaches, apricots and bananas. The new Baobab Fruit Cubes also claim to contain up to four times more antioxidants than dried cherries, blueberries and cranberries.
The chewable cubes come in 3 flavors -- Mango, Strawberry and Pomegranate -- and are a blend of citrus pectin, baobab powder and 100 percent fruit purees with no added sugar.
The fruit cubes are also 45% lower in sugar than dried tart cherries and 60% lower than dried cranberries.
