Founded in 1985, Allen

Community Outreach (ACO)

has helped families living in

Allen, Lucas and Fairview

rebuild their lives through the

many services and programs

provided. ACO is a non-profit

organization, with the majority

of funding for the agency

coming through local business

and individual donations, as

well as fundraising activities.

Many families may need only

short-term assistance, a

“bridge” to help them through

a crisis. Other families have

been torn apart or stripped of

everything and require more

specialized assistance and

counseling to regain stability.

Volunteers Make It Happen

Without the many hours given

by volunteers and the generous

donations of those throughout

the community, ACO would

not exist. It takes all of us

working together to transform

lives and rebuild families.

Through our Meals-on-Wheels

program, ACO volunteers

deliver warm smiles along with

hot meals to the Allen, Lucas

and Fairview are homebound

individuals each weekday. Food

Pantry volunteers assist families

with groceries.

Volunteers’ helping hands and

donations of gently used

clothing, furniture and

household items help to stock

the ACO Resale Shop. Families

in need of items can shop for

what they need through a

voucher system. The shop is

also open to the public and is a

treasure chest of bargains and

finds. The ACO Resale Shop

also provides vital funding for

programs which support the

services for families in crisis.

Community Donat ions

Whether you make a donation

of money, in-kind goods or

services, or the gift of your

time, you can be assured that

ACO utilizes your

contributions efficiently and

effectively.

Programs of Allen Community Outreach Meals on Wheels & More

Meals-on-Wheels (MOW) is a program designed to deliver hot, nutritious meals to people age 60 or older

who, due to physical limitations, are unable to prepare their own meals. Meals are prepared by the Collin

County Committee on Aging (CCCOA) in McKinney and brought to ACO hot and fresh each day of the

week. Meals are delivered throughout Allen, Fairview and Lucas 5 days a week, except holidays. The meals

are only part of the MOW Program. For some of our clients, the volunteer delivering the food is the only

person they may see that day.

Care & Share Program

Collections of everything from toothpaste and diapers to paper goods and personal hygiene products are

kept in our Care & Share Closet. Families may come in once a month to get the items needed. By providing

clients with these types of items, they are able to utilize their financial resources in other important areas of

their household budget. Donations of these items are needed throughout the year, and come from

individuals, school groups, and various service organizations.

Graduation Equivalence Degree (GED)

ACO implemented a GED program in August 2009 (formerly part of Allen ISD) that focuses on

accommodations for GED preparation and testing. This initiative targets working age adults, 18 to 64 years

of age, who are employed or employable and can demonstrate academic readiness to prepare for and pass

the English version of the GED tests. Millions of adults have completed their high school diploma in General

Equivalency Diploma programs to increase their employment potential or to enroll in a higher education

program.

The GED program is free to participants and is being led by the same teacher who has taught the program

for 24 years in the Allen ISD. The program is taught year-round in the ACO Community Room 47 weeks

per year on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

ACO Resale Shops

The Allen Resale Shop first opened in 1998. Founded upon ACO's mission of providing basic necessities, the

principles have not changed: providing free, quality clothing to clients who reside in Allen, Fairview and

Lucas while simultaneously selling affordable clothing, furniture, and housewares to the public. Clients are

able to shop for their needs side-by-side retail customers. This method allows all people to retain their

dignity. The Resale Shop is a source of funding and offers ongoing support for other ACO programs.

The Farmersville Resale Shop opened in September 2011 and offers the same quality merchandise for sale in

that community. With the guidance of the Board of Directors and community leaders, the Farmersville

Resale Shop hopes to impact the families of Northeast Collin County in the same way as the Allen Resale

Shop.

Programs of Allen Community Outreach “Fill the Bus” School Supply Drive

“Fill The Bus” is a program sponsored by the Allen-Fairview Chamber of Commerce, the Allen ISD and the

Allen Community Outreach to provide children of low-income families with new school supplies for the Fall.

ACO is dependent on donations to provide supplies to all students who will need them this school year. For

so many families, new school supplies can be a large financial burden, especially if they have multiple children.

Costs of $50 or more per child can make it impossible for parents to provide all of the necessary supplies.

Through generous community donations, ACO is able to provide these families with new school supplies for

the best start back to school.

Holiday Food Drive

Each holiday season, volunteers working through Allen Community Outreach (ACO) touch

hundreds of lives and bring joy to what might otherwise be a very sad time for families in financial crisis.

With donations and support from the community, families are given boxes of food for a complete

Thanksgiving meal. All of the food is donated by individuals, businesses and groups, and volunteers pack

more than 400 boxes to prepare for distribution to families so that they can enjoy a traditional meal.

Toys for Our Tots—Christmas Gifts for Children, Teens and Seniors

Each year, ACO asks the community to “adopt” a child, teen, or senior for Christmas. The Donor/Adopter,

is given the person’s clothing sizes and wish list and asked to make their holiday a little happier by purchasing

new clothes and gifts/toys for them. We ask for all items to be new and unwrapped, as Christmas may be

the only time during the year they may receive clothing that is brand-new!

More than 700 individuals are helped each year through Allen Community Outreach’s Christmas Adoption

Program. With your adoption of a CHILD, TEEN or SENIOR, you can make this very special time of year a

lasting memory for someone who otherwise would not experience the joy of the holiday season.

Page 3

ACO Food Pantry

Opened in 2009, the ACO Food Pantry is the only local pantry offering choices to families of staple items

plus refrigerated and frozen food sections. The ACO Food Pantry offers crisis food to families living in Allen,

Fairview and Lucas. Stock in the ACO Food Pantry is a reflection of donations from the community and

support from the North Texas Food Bank.

Families can shop the pantry with a cart, choosing the items they know will best feed their families. The

pantry is dependent on the generosity of the community for donations and completely staffed with

volunteers.

We help transform lives by providing essential human and

social services in our communities.

Because of their situation, Mary

and Sam were able to shop in

the ACO Food Pantry and

receive enough food for their

family to stock their bare pantry

with canned, frozen and fresh

foods. They were also given

other needed household goods

such as toothpaste and laundry

detergent so that the limited

funds they did have could be

used for their electric bill. Sam

and Mary were able to get help

with paying their rent to keep a

roof over their heads. There

was also an opportunity to

attend a financial planning class,

and they realized how much they

needed to learn about managing

their budget.

Mary enrolled in a free GED

class in order to open up more

Mary and Sam* came to the

ACO office in the fall of 2010.

Sam had lost his job that past

March. With two young children

and no high school diploma, it

was difficult for Mary to find a

job that paid enough to help

make ends meet. With very

little money in the bank, they

were at a loss on how they were

going to pay next month’s rent.

Mary and Sam were referred to

ACO because their neighbor had

heard they could maybe get help

with their rent. They sat with

the caseworker, and as their

story unfolded, there were many

opportunities for assistance that

would not just help this family in

the short term, but truly

transform their lives for the

better.

possibilities for her to have a job

that would be able to contribute

to the support of the family.

Through the support and

assistance that Mary and Sam

received, within a few months

they were in a stable financial

situation and able to provide for

themselves and their two

children.

ACO transforms lives of

hundreds of families just like

Mary and Sam’s in our

community each year, and is able

to do so because of the

generous donations from

businesses and individuals.
