We are heading over to Florida for the Global Pet Expo in February 2013 where we hope to view the latest natural and healthy pet products from around the world so we can add more amazing products to our col-lection.

VEGGIE MUESLI TREATS Due to popular demand for meat-free treats, we decided to make these new treats which have been taste tested by our 4 legged cus-tomers over the last couple of months. Even our super-fussy “Roxy” loves them. Made with sweet potato, rolled oats, oat bran, coconut, linseed meal, almond meal, sun-flower meal and green barley. Available in 250g and 1kg packs.

BARE HOOF CARE The Horse Owners Handbook This is a great little book for anyone wishing to properly care for your horses' hooves. How we manage our horses' hooves has enormous implications for their long term soundness, but to manage them, we must first understand them a little. At only $5.50 this is definitely a great buy! DIATOMACEOUS EARTH Diatomaceous earth is now available in

fine powder as well as coarse ground. The fine powder is only available in 20kg bulk

bags but is great value.

PLANTS & FOODS TOXIC TO HORSES

There are quite a lot of plants that are toxic to horses, so it is important to ensure you know what is growing in your paddocks. The list is too long to include here but I will list a few com-mon foods, herbs and grasses that should be avoided for horses. Many garden plants and fruit trees are toxic to horses so it is a good idea to avoid throwing prunings or garden waste into paddocks to avoid acciden-tally allowing them access to something toxic.

Grass clippings (from mow-ing) should NEVER be given to horses, as the small parti-cle size can cause choke or obstruction, and can also cause fermentation and acid produc-tion which can lead to colic, toxaemia, laminitis (founder) and death.

Avocado plants and fruit contain a toxin that can cause se-vere respiratory difficulty and death by exposure to only very small amounts of the plant.

Bracken fern can cause animals to be-come unaware of their surroundings with uncoordinated or staggering gait. Toxicity can occur after eating bracken for several weeks or months, so it is a good idea to remove bracken from pad-docks.

Cruciferous vegetables – broccoli, cab-bage, cauliflower and brussel sprouts can cause rapid increase of gas in the stomach leading to colic so are best avoided.

Peach, cherry, plum and apricot trees (leaves, twig, bark) are toxic to horses. The fruit is not toxic but should not be fed in any quantity which could lead to colic.

Onion may cause anemia. Deadly Nightshade family which in-cludes potatoes, chilli, capsicum, to-mato, eggplant and other plants and herbs should be avoided.

Rye grass (Perennial or annual) may harbor tiny fungi called endo-phytes which can cause ryegrass stag-gers. Mycotoxins produced by the endophytes may contribute to a range of other symptoms. From erratic and anxious behaviour to trembling, un-steadiness and poor muscle co-ordination, especially in hind quarters. Johnson grass (Sorghum spp.) Signs are consistent with cyanide poisoning. The first indication is rapid breathing, which pro-gresses to tremors, fre-quent urination and defe-cation, gasping and con-vulsions. This grass was found to be responsible for the mysterious death of 22 horses on a property in Qld in 2011.

Hemlock (Conium maculatum) Signs appear within an hour or two of consumption, starting with nervous-ness, tremors and in-coordination, pro-gressing to depression and diminished heart and respiratory rates and possibly colic. Death results from respiratory failure.

Oleander Effects are usually seen several hours after ingestion and last over 24 hours. Signs include colic, difficulty breathing, tremors and an irregular heart rate. The pulse may be either slowed or ac-celerated. Ragwort Often there is no evidence of consump-tion until signs of liver failure begin to appear: photosensitization, diminished appetite and weight loss, progressing to depression, in-coordination and jaundice. Some others include : Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) Oak tree Paterson’s curse Red maple (Acer rubrum [Aceraceae]) Salvation Jane Capeweed Common heliotrope Cotton bushes Black Walnut Tree (Juglans nigra) St. Johnswort (Hypericum perforatum Caster Bean Plant (Ricinus communis) Mistletoe (Phoradendron flavescens/Viscum) Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) Blue canary grass (Phalaris coerul)

DO YOU HAVE PARASITES?

A parasite is an organism that lives in and feeds off the body of a host. It is dependent on its host for survival. Parasites can inhabit all parts of the body and not just the digestive tract and bowels. They have been found in blood, liver, brain, eyes, heart and other organs.

According to some studies, 85% of the population have parasites. Most people will get parasites at some stage in their lifetime.

Most responsible animal carer’s regularly worm their animals to ensure they stay healthy but very few people actually think to take something to re-move parasites themselves.

Parasites infect humans of all ages and you don’t need to have animals to get infected.

There are over 1000 varieties of para-sites in the four major categories - Protozoa, Trematoda, Cestoda and Nematoda.

Not everyone infected with parasites will notice symptoms and many mild symptoms may have occurred for so many years that the individual consid-ers these normal because they have forgotten what true health feels like.

Symptoms of parasites can be physical and emotional.

Tests to identify parasite infections are not that reliable, so if you suffer from any of the following symptoms or have a health issue that hasn’t cleared up
