Our wet spring didn’t cause many delays with the Purnell build,thanks to a foundation that was already in place, poured last year alongside the Keller foun-dation to save costs.

But it did mean that we had to rethink our traditional groundbreaking ceremony. Instead, we opted for an old-fashioned Wall Raising to kick off the Purnell home build. On May 1st,a group of family, friends and Habitat volunteers gathered on site. After an invocation by Brent Brad-bery, Construction Committee Chair, and welcome by Doug Arlt, Palouse Habitat Board President, Construction Supervisor Ken Hall gave an overview of the home’s

design and the expected build sched-ule. Finally, Ken, Cori and their children raised one wall into place as everyone applauded.

In July, crews will work outside on the roof and siding, inside on walls, insulation and sheetrock. If fundraising can keep pace with the willing and able volunteers, we hope to complete the home this fall.

2012 marked another successful Spring Break Ser-vice Trip to Guatemala. This year, four WSU students and four adult volunteers traveled to the build site in Chimaltenango, Guatemala, west of Guatemala City. We completed the first of the eight weeks it will take to build the home. Our team had the tough assignment of hauling supplies by wheelbarrow and by hand up a 50 ft trail to the build site. We also mixed cement and connected rebar for the foundation of the house. It was challenging but very rewarding to see how grateful the family was for our time and assistance. We also helped build smokeless stoves for families who could not afford a Habitat home. This project is crucial to the health and wellness of families in Gua-temala, where many suffer from lung disease because they breath smoke night and day from small, interior cooking fires. During our week in Guatemala we built adobe smokeless stoves for four families. It becomes very personal when you spend the day working with a family in their home. We were all touched by the project and the people we met. I felt very blessed to have had this amazing experi-ence. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who made our 4th Annual Beans ‘n’ Jeans Dinner & Auction a success this year! The final count is in and the event continues to grow: 174 attended and we raised $22,500 to help build the Purnell home! What an amazing gift! Thanks to more donations from local and re-gional businesses, the silent and live auctions were larger with interesting new items. We tried some new things this year, some of which worked well, and others that we’re already working to improve for next year. We were especially pleased that the new dessert auction, which featured specialties from area restaurants and two tasty homemade pies from Uniontown supporters, was such a big hit. We are planning for it to become a regular part of the evening. See you again next year!

Palouse Habitat is proud of the homes we build. They are at-tractive, simple, affordable, and extremely energy efficient. In fact, over the years we’ve adopted new building techniques and incor-porated new heating and cooling systems. The Pacific Northwest has some of the most affordable, renewable energy in the country, but monthly power bills can still be a significant portion of a fam-ily budget. We want to keep Habitat homes affordable in the long run, and be good stewards of our natural resources. We use special roof trusses for extended eaves to shade win-

dows in summer and let in sunlight in winter. We install low-emittance coated windows designed to reduce heat flow. The insulation in walls, ceilings and floors has a high rat-ing, and we wrap the home in vapor barrier. Instead of a traditional furnace, we install a LifeBreath heat and energy recovery system. We owe a big thanks to Howard Hughes Appliance in Moscow, who helps make this effort affordable by contributing Energy Star appliances at cost for the kitchen and laundry room. Palouse Habitat has built energy efficient homes for years, but we’d never applied for an Energy Star rating. How would one of our volunteer-built homes stand up to others in the industry? With the Keller home, we took on the challenge. It was an involved pro-cess, but in the end the Keller home was one of only 1900 homes to earn an Energy Star rating in Wash-ington state. So why stop at an Energy Star rating? Palouse Habitat is building the Purnell home to the LEED standard, which has even stricter guidelines, including triple-pane U .21 rated windows and low VOC paint.
