Presidents MessageFYSA PresidentMarino Torrens,

It is almost getting to the end of another season, and before you know it 2012-13 will be here and we will be starting all over again. This new season will bring something new to all of us, the new FSPL which in the first year will invite the teams that made it all the way to the round of 16 of our State cup, like with everything new there will be some bumps in the road, but I know that with all of your help, this new league will be a great way for our teams to have the best competition in the State. This 2011-12 year has brought us a lot of good showings by our teams in Regional as well as National competitions. We have had a very good showing at the SPL in its first year, out of the 6 divi-sions we had 3 Florida teams that won and will be going to Southern Region-al’s, U16 Girls West Florida Premier, U17 Girls Brandon FC Flames and the U17 Boys Tampa Bay United, congratulations. We also had the U14 Girls from Ponte Verda that have also qualified for Regional’s by winning the R3PLE, and we have 1 more girls team and 2 teams in the boys side that are in very good positions to qualify as well. In the R3PLE we also had a couple of winners the U17 Boys team from Team Boca and the U18 Boys team from Florida Rush Nike. The 96 Boys team won the ODP National championship with a 3-0 victory over Michigan in the Finals to bring Florida our first ODP National Championship. At the Regional President cup we will be very well represented by our President cup champions, to include the U17 Girls team from Miami Lakes that a couple of years ago made it all the way to Nationals, good luck to all of our teams. By the time you are reading this we will have decided our State cup champion-ships, and we will know which of our teams will be going to South Carolina for Southern Regional’s. I am very proud to have served all of you at the State, Regional and National level, our teams have done very well in competitions, and have represented all of Florida with a lot of class, I hope that it will continue for years to come. as the AGM is fast approaching, my first term as your President will be com-ing to an end, with the support of my family I will be running again. If elected again I will make sure I represent all of you to the best of my ability. I have learned that no matter what we do, there will always be people that do not agree with your decisions. However as long as I make the decisions that have been in FYSA’s best interest, I will have done the job you trusted me to do almost 2 years ago, and hopefully you will trust me to do for another 2 years, as there is a lot to be done still, in our State as well as to continue to work with the other States in the Region as well as with the National office. I think we have a very professional staff at the office under the supervision of our Executive Director Dale Burke, as well as a very good Board that is working excellent together as 1 unit, not as individuals, to make sure we do what is needed to make FYSA even better. I hope to see you all at the AGM, but remember if you are not going to attend, please make sure you give a proxy to a person you feel comfortable that will represent you the way you want to vote. This is your organization, not ours, we do not make the rules, we just make sure that they are followed.Thank you.

2012 Presidents Cup

The 2012 President’s Cup was held at the Lake Myrtle Soccer Complex over the April 21st weekend. It turned out to be a great event while dodging some threating weather conditions. Storms rolling in and games playing on we were still able to finish with thunderous applause from the crowds and not the clouds. Our U13 through U17 Champions have earned the right to represent Florida and compete in the US Youth Soccer Region III Presidents Cup which will be held June 7-10 2012 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Winners will advance to the National Presidents Cup which will be held July 11-15 in Sacramento,

ODP Champions Florida Teams Battle Michigan to Win Champion-

ship Games and First Ever ODP National TitleThe US Youth Soccer ODP National Championships were held in Frisco, Texas on March 8-11. During the four-day tournament, the 1995 and 1996 boys and girls teams fought hard to get to the finals in order to win the national title for their state. After securing a 3-0 win during the semis against Virginia, the 96 Florida Boys moved forward to face Michigan in the finals. Florida player Johnny Nartowicz started a passing game that ended with teammate Morgan Shepard scoring a goal and giving the team a 1-0 lead at the half. During the second half, Florida players Samuel Vinson and Mario Da Silva both scored goals bringing Florida to a 3-0 lead. Florida’s hard work and fierce play paid off

as they held on to their lead and ended up beating Michigan 3-0 to win the national title. This is the first time Florida has ever won a national title and Steve Lyons, head coach of the Florida 96 Boys team, was very proud of his players. “Florida hasn’t won many games in this event and to be the first team from Florida to win it is something special,” said Lyons. Mario da Silva, one of the three players to score during the big game, spoke about how much ODP has helped him become a better player and present him with the opportunities needed to excel. “With ODP you can develop more fully because you’re playing with all these good players from around the nation that you would never know before, instead of just in your own little circle,” said da Silva. The 96 Florida Girls team also competed in the championship with a great game against Michigan that ended in a score of 5-1 winning them the third-place spot. We here at FYSA couldn’t be more proud of our boys and girls for doing so well and bringing home not only the national title but a sense of pride in our developing youth players. ODP regional trials have ended for the 2012 year, but players who are interested should check the FYSA web site at fysa.com during August for a list of the 2013 ODP regional trial dates.

CONGRATULATIONS

Growing Champions for Life As parents we’re communicating every single second of every single day. Mouth open or mouth closed, the message is getting out. Your attitude about your child and her performance, your sense of admiration…or not, and what you think about her efforts is transmitted in subtle ways for her – and everyone else – to read. Approxi-mately 55% of all communication is transmitted by body language. It’s amazing how many parents con-tinue to behave as if they are invisible or as if their children can’t see them from the field. The rolling of the eyes after an inaccurate pass; mom crossing her arms after each missed kick; and the shuffled walk of disappointment after a goal by the other team are seen, interpreted as personal, and noted by your child. The fact that you are not disappointed in them, but actually for them, does not come across like you intend. Let’s think about the possible ways your child may interpret body language messages observed in the bleachers.

“You blew it again.” “Your performance is embarrassing me.”

“I’m disappointed in you.” “You’re not good enough.” “You’re not trying hard enough.”

“I don’t want to be here.” The reason your body language is of such importance to your child is this: The opinion that matters most to your children is what they think you think of them… that includes practice or a competition. For your athlete to perform up to his or her natural potential there must be a consistent assumption in place: unconditional love and total acceptance no matter how the performance goes. Children are free to be their best when the fear of disappointing their parents is not even remotely on their mind. When parents remain supportive in word, tone, and posture 100% of the time regardless of performance ups and downs children have one less critic to worry

about. The internal critic is already giving them a hard enough time as it is! We can accomplish this by monitoring our responses to the ebb and flow of the program. Conscientiously check yourself during the five seconds that follow any error. Those are the most crucial five seconds of the game! Remember, you are a supporter all the time, not an evaluator! While it’s true your child should not be looking at you during a game, if they are looking perhaps it’s because they’ve grown accustomed to receiving your play-by-play feedback of “thumbs-up” or “thumbs-down” after every play. Take yourself out of the role of evaluator and your child will always assume the best about your opinion of her. David Benzelwww.growingchampionsforlife.com

TOPSoccerUnder a swirling vanilla sky kissed by ocean-swept breezes atop a small hill in Melbourne Beach, a little more than two dozen high school students — volunteers — started to change the world.

They did it through every soccer kick, every touch pass, every encouraging word and every high-five. They did it by giving their free time on a picturesque Saturday afternoon to about 10 disabled athletes who had nowhere else to play soccer. They did it by showing them pa-tience, compassion, friendship and trust. They did it by participating in the second week of this wonderful eight-week program called TopSoccer that is aimed at allowing the disabled to play the sport so many of them love, the one known worldwide as “the beautiful game.”

It didn’t matter that one little boy wouldn’t let go of his Buzz Lightyear action figure while making his way through soccer stations that practiced every facet of the game. It didn’t matter that one little girl kept running to her dad every few minutes to make sure he was still there. What mattered were the smiles on the ones we normally look away from, the ones who sit in classrooms away from our own children, the ones for whom there are no soccer leagues. And there were plenty of those smiles.

“I’ve been playing for 10 years,” said 16-year-old Elizabeth Bress of Melbourne Beach, a beautiful girl with an electric personality who suffers from too many developmental issues to list here. When asked what she loves most about the sport, she smiled and shrugged. “I just love playing the game.”

It was Bress who swims in Special Olympic events who unwittingly served as the impetus to start the program when she outgrew the local recreation soccer league that allowed her to play with much younger kids. Her younger sister, Kimberly, and some of her buddies, including Cara Cagney and Beatrice Ottomanelli, attended one of Elizabeth’s swim meets and decided to start a soccer program.

They heard about TopSoccer, which stands simply for The Outreach Program for Soccer and learned that the nearest one to Mel-bourne Beach was in Vero Beach. The Bress family approached the Florida Youth Soccer Association in Auburndale for permission to run the program.

Then the girls traveled numerous times for training in Vero, won the support of the Interact Club at Melbourne High School and re-quested an emergency meeting of the Melbourne Beach Soccer Club seeking permission to use fields and for support. They also raised about $6,000 for equipment and eventually uniforms for the participating athletes. It also means that the program is free for everyone, for people like the parents of 24-year-old Nikki Tagg of Mel-bourne, who suffers from autism.

“I played soccer one time but no one passed the ball to me,” Nikki told me during a water break Saturday. “I kept waiting for the ball. Now I just want to try and see if I can get better.” I wasn’t the only one totally blown away by what I witnessed on the soccer field. Joe Duffy, the FYSA Region B coordina-tor who runs the program in Vero Beach, couldn’t believe the number of teenagers that have committed to the program.

“This is really phenomenal,” he said, “and to think the majority of them are just sophomores.”

One of those sophomores, Cagney, worked hard keeping the athletes and volunteers on point from a run around the field to stretching exercises to soccer stations to a game of duck-duck-goose followed by sharks and minnows, and a scrimmage.

“This is a place where special needs kids can come play soccer and learn values like trustworthiness and friendship,” she said. “It’s definitely touching to watch them play. It brings me so much joy.”

Maybe some will only see soccer out there every Saturday afternoon for the next six weeks. But I know it’s so much more. It’s all about kids trying to change the world, kids helping the dreamless to dream and dream big. If you would like to register your special needs athlete, or to volunteer, call 321-728-9703.

Coaching Education News – May 2012U.S. Soccer has revised the curriculum of the “E” course. This is part of a process that will see the revision of all of the courses. The two significant changes are that the “E” course now becomes a tested course and that there are Pre-course Assignments that must be completed and submitted to FYSA before a coach may register to attend an “E” course. It is estimated that the Pre-course Assignments will take four to eight hours to complete. The Pre-course Assignments are posted on the FYSA website. fysa.com/coaching/598110

All coaching courses are posted at fysa.com/coaching/77796Currently, there are three “E” courses scheduled and one “D” course. They are:“E” Course – Lithia – June 29 – July 1“E” Course – Royal Palm Beach – July 20-22“E” Course – Fleming Island – July 27-29“D” Course – Ocala – August 3-5 and 10-12

Change to voting at the AGM. It is our goal this year that every vote that can be cast is cast. No eligible vote should go unclaimed. For this year’s AGM credentials will utilize Got Soccer to verify the Agent of record or others so designated to be able to pick up credentials (votes). You may still use the “old Proxy” form as in years past, original and notarized, but we recommend you utilize your ability as Agent of Record to name the person you want to collect your votes in Got Soccer. This way even if you cannot make the AGM due to a last minute problem, your votes can still be counted. As long as we can verify the party claiming the votes in Got Soccer those votes will be released. We will have online live access to Got Soccer at check in. As long as credentials are open, updates will be accepted. This year we are also “retiring” the old paddles. We will no longer cast any votes by paddle, but will utilize paper ballots when the need arises. Tommy Thompson Secretary
