UMobile AdministrationDr. Mark Foley has served as president of the University of Mobile since 1998 and is the third president of the university since its founding in 1961. During more than a decade of leadership, Dr. Foley has led the move to intentionally integrate faith and learning in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs such as the Center for Performing Arts, and earning the private Christian university national rankings.

His emphasis on the core values of faith, learning and leadership has extended to all operations of the university, from the classroom to the administrative offices. With these core values in place, the university is committed to graduating confident Christian men and women who have mastered the body of knowledge required by the degree they hold; who know how to think; who know what they believe and why they believe it; who possess the courage to live and work according to those beliefs; who accept responsibility as caretakers of that with which God has entrusted them; and who possess the willingness and skill to use their influence in appropriate and effective ways to change the world around them.

Dr. Foley is a member of the Executive Committee of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a past chairman of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools,

and a member of the Board of Directors of Victory Health Partners and Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc.

Previously, Dr. Foley was executive vice president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a bachelor of business administration from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas; and a master of divinity and a doctor of philosophy in psychology and counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister, a former business owner, and has practiced as a professional counselor. His wife, Marilyn, is involved in many university activities. She holds a bachelor of science in education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is a former classroom educator.

The Foleys have two children and two granddaughters. Their daughter, Molly, is married to Doug Sawyer, an accountant in Georgia, and they have two daughters, Avery and Abby. Their son, Rob, and his wife, Leah, reside in Colorado. Rob is on the staff of Denver Theological Seminary and Leah is a registered nurse.

UMobile CoachesIn 22 seasons serving as the head coach at the University of Mobile, Mike Jacobs has led the Rams to 716 wins and just 461 losses. In the past 22 years, more 30 Rams have signed professional contracts, including Major League baseball players J.C. Romero and Saul Rivera, and Marlins’ 3rd-Base Coach Joe Espada. The leadership that produced 30 professional players also led the Rams to the 2001 NAIA World Series in Lewiston, ID and a 43-win season in 2008.

Jacobs helped begin the University of Mobile baseball program in 1990, after coming to Mobile from UMS-Wright Preparatory School, where he spent two years as an assistant coach and the last four as the head coach. As the head coach of the Bulldogs, Jacobs led them to a second-place finish in the State 3A classification in 1987 and a state title in 1988. He was inducted into the UMS-Wright Hall of Fame last fall. In 1981, Jacobs coached the Evangel Christian School squad to a second-place finish in the

Alabama Christian Athletic Conference. He began his coaching career at Central Baptist School, where his team won a district title in the Alabama Private School Association. As a college player, Jacobs had an outstanding career at the University of South Alabama under Eddie Stankey. He was a four-year letterman at USA and was the Jaguars’ leading hitter in 1976.

Jacobs and his wife, Joy, are members of People of Mars Hill, where he serves as an elder. Mrs. Jacobs is a registered nurse, a graduate of the University of Mobile, and works for Surgicare of Mobile. Jacobs has been a featured speaker at several Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ functions.

The Jacobs have two sons, Josh and Jeff. Josh, a pharmacist, and his wife, Kara, a classroom educator, reside in Birmingham with daughter Emma Kate and son Parker. Both are UMobile alumni. Jeff and his wife, Amy, reside in Mobile where he works for Day Trading Institute. Amy is a physician’s assistant. They are also UMobile alumni.

Jon Seymour begins his eighth season with the University of Mobile baseball staff.

In addition to working with the University of Mobile baseball pitching staff, Seymour is in charge of recruiting and maintenance of the baseball field.

Before coming to Mobile, Seymour worked as an assistant pitching coach for Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., for three seasons.

Prior to his stint at Shenandoah University, Seymour was an assistant pitching coach with a summer league team, the Santa Clara Dodgers, that advanced to the Palomino World Series two years in a row. At the same time, Seymour spent three seasons from 1996-99 working with NCAA

Division I perennial power Stanford University as an assistant groundskeeper while also helping out with the Stanford baseball practices and summer camps.

Seymour received his AA Degree from Mission College in Santa Clara, CA, after playing two years on the Mission College baseball team in 1995 and 1996. He was an All-Conference pitcher in 1996 in the California Junior College Coast Conference after going 10-0 with a 1.68 ERA. Seymour is working on his B.A. degree in exercise science.

Seymour was born on Feb. 14, 1975 and is a native of Santa Clara, CA. He is a 1993 graduate of Santa Clara High School where he played baseball.

Mike Watkins, a steady fixture in the UMobile athletic department for several years, will begin his eighth season as an assistant coach.

Watkins has served as the Director of Intramurals as well as Assistant Athletic Director at UMobile for seven years and the university’s strength coach for the past nine seasons. Watkins also spent two seasons in 1996-98 as the head coach of the women’s golf team.

Before coming to UMobile, Watkins served as head baseball coach at Bishop State Community College from 1993-95. Watkins got his start in baseball as the head coach at Alba High School from 1985-88.

Double majoring at the University of West Alabama, Watkins completed both his B.S. in history and B.S. in physical education in 1984 and received his master’s degree in human performance from the University of Mobile in 1991. Watkins also received his Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification from the National Strength Coaches Association in 1993.

University of Mobile 11

2012 PreviewThe University of Mobile team will enter the 2012 season looking to climb the Southern States Athletic Conference standings in the team’s second season. The lineup loses three potent hitters from last year’s squad in Cody Barber, Jeremy Williams and Sam Mahoney, so the coaches will look to a deep pitching staff to lead the way.

“Everyone says pitching wins championships,” Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. “We have one of the deepest staffs we have ever put together.” Returning pitchers that logged innings last season are Josh Blaylock, Michael King, Cory Fountain, Blake Hanson, Jacob Knowels, Drew Esslinger and John Irwin. Blaylock, King, Knowels, and Hanson all posted ERA’s under 4.00, while Fountain picked up three wins and worked 40.1 innings.

“We expect Michael to help anchor our weekend rotation, while Josh provides an electric arm at the back of the bullpen,” Jacobs said. “Knowels, Hanson, Fountain and newcomer Ryan Hines are all potential arms that can start on the weekend. Hines struck out 77 in 77.1 innings and posted a 2.44 ERA at Alabama Southern. We are also blessed to have 4 lefties on this staff, which is always a plus.”

Other newcomers that are expected to aid the staff are Shane Ikner, Cole Vaughan and Dustin Pugh. Redshirt Blake Mathews also returns to the staff after sitting out last season due to arm trouble. Ikner struck out 58 in 59 innings of work, while Vaughan fanned 26 and walked only 4.

Working with the pitching staff will be a solid group of catchers in Ryan Waltman, Keith Shirah and Travis Bowen.

“Ryan is one of the best defensive catchers we have had at Mobile, and he has a powerful arm,” Jacobs said. “Keith brings a .390 batting average and was an All American at Faulkner State. Travis is a very smart catcher and has quick feet.”

Backing the pitching staff on the infield will be a group consisting mainly of experienced players. Returning infield candidates are Cameron White, Justin Beck, Brady King, Keith Granger, Jacob Knowles and Hunter Norris.

“Cameron and Justin are expected to patrol the middle, while Brady will see a lot of time at third, and Jacob and Keith are both righties who will play first,” Jacobs said. “Hunter is still recovering from a torn patella tendon and we hope he will be ready to contribute to the team early in the season. Josh Blaylock can also be expected to help in the infield. There is nowhere on the field that he cannot play.”

Incoming players expected to see a lot of time in the infield are Jon Soutullo, Braxton Hamil and Drew Vaughan.

“Jon is a high-energy guy that brings another left-handed bat to the lineup and added versatility,” Jacobs said. “Braxton is a lefty with power and has hit for average this fall. He will be counted on to replace some of the power lost from a year ago. Drew just arrived this spring but has made an impact on the staff. He can play second or short.” Manning the outfield for the Rams will be Josh Blaylock, Jared Brannon, Parker Hollinghead, Ryne Phillips, Ryan Parazine and Walt Bedsole. Phillips hit .351 with 34 RBI in 2011 and will hit in the 3-hole in 2012. Brannon comes to Mobile from Faulkner State where he hit .390 and posted a .440 on base

percentage. Hollinghead and Parazine both come from Alabama Southern. Parazine hit .363 with 12 doubles, while Hollinghead belted 7 homers.

“The outfield is the spot where we have the most need for our new guys to produce,” Jacobs said. “Josh is a very good outfielder with some pop, but is expected to close games out on the bump. Ryne showed last year what he can do in the middle of the lineup. Brannon reminds me of Jeffrey White (who ranks 6th on Mobile’s career hits list), and he will hit at the top of the lineup, while Hollinghead brings much needed pop to our lineup. Parazine hits for average and provides another left-handed bat. Bedsole is one of the hardest working kids on the team and will be looking to work his way into the lineup.”

Awaiting the squad will be a challenging schedule, especially now that all teams in the SSAC play each other. Six teams (Lee, Brewton-Parker, Southern Poly, AUM, Faulkner and Belhaven) finished ranked in the NAIA Top-20. Shorter won 40 games and William Carey qualified for the National Championship Opening Round.

“We got a little taste of how difficult the conference is last year, and now we play even more games, and there really isn’t an easy game to be found,” Jacobs said. “Sprinkle in some games against NCAA-II schools West Florida and University of New Orleans, and you have yourself a daunting schedule.”

The season opens Feb. 3 at home with a noon twin bill against St. Catharine, while conference play starts Feb. 17-18 with a three-game series at rival Spring Hill. The team’s first home conference series will be Feb. 24-25 against Lee, who finished the season ranked 7th.

University of Mobile 23

2011 ReviewThe 2011 season saw the University of Mobile transition into the always-tough Southern States Athletic Conference, and saw Head Coach Mike Jacobs pick up career win No. 700 when the Rams beat rival Spring Hill 7-3 March 4th. UMobile finished the season with a 29-23 overall record and a 5-13 mark in SSAC play.

The Rams started the season by building a 17-6 record through the first 23 games of the season. Mobile took 3-of-4 from St. Catharine to open the season, took 2-of-3 from Spring Hill in the team’s first SSAC series and knocked off perennial power Lee University 10-7.

With the series versus the Badgers tied up at 1-1, Jacob Knowles twirled 7 shutout innings to lead the Rams to a 3-0 win in the rubber match, while Keith Granger drove in a pair of runs. In the 10-7 slugfest win over Lee, Michael King tossed 8.2 innings to grab the win, while Jeremy Williams finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.

“It was definitely a good start to the season,” Head Coach Mike Jacobs said. “We won all but one of the series we played, swung the bats well and got some quality outings from our pitching staff.”

From there, Lee finished off the series win over Mobile by taking the next two games, and then the Rams dropped 2-of-3 to Belhaven, before salvaging a series win over William Carey to sit at 23-11, 5-4 at the end of March.

The Belhaven series was closely

contested, with the three games being decided by a total of four runs. The Rams lost the opener 1-0 in 15 innings despite a 9-innings shutout from King, but the offense managed only 7 hits in 49 at-bats. After UMobile bounced back to take the second game 5-4, Belhaven scored in every inning to take the series finale 7-5.

The Rams then opened the William Carey series at home by taking the first two games by a combined 13-6 score before falling in the finale despite scoring 7 runs.

“That Belhaven series was tough, losing 1-0 in 15 innings and then dropping another close game,” Jacobs said. “It was nice to see the guys rebound with four straight wins and a series win in conference play.”

The next 18 games did not go well for the Rams, compiling a record of 6-12. The bats went cold in those games, as the team scored 5 runs or fewer in

all nine of the conference games, and the pitching staff had trouble holding leads when the offense produced. The team did take 2-of-3 from Shorter and swept LSU-Alexandria.

“We had ourselves in position to end our first season in the SSAC with a respectable record, but we just couldn’t finish,” Jacobs said. “Our lineup didn’t produce like it was earlier in the year and our pitches started giving up more runs.”

At the end of the year Jeremy Williams and Sam Mahoney earned All-SSAC honors. Williams went on to be selected in the 36th round by the Texas Rangers, while Mahoney inked with the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League.

“Both of those guys anchored our lineup and put up great numbers for us,” Jacobs said. “It’s always great when players have a chance to chase their dream of playing pro ball, and we are excited to see what they will do with the opportunity.”

Jeremy Williams was drafted by the Texas Rangers.

Sam Mahoney drove in a team-high 41 runs in 2011.
