COUGAR BASEBALL BEGINS A NEW ERA IN 2012 It's no secret that the 2011 USF baseball team fell far short of expectations. The Cougars were picked third in the GPAC preseason poll and the senior-laden group had their sights set on the conference crown and the program's first bid to the NAIA baseball championship since 2007.

The Cougars stumbled instead to a sixth-place conference finish and saw their season come to a gut-wrenching end against No. 1 seed Hastings College on the second day of the GPAC tournament.

USF led Hastings 12-9 after eight innings and seemed to have a spot in the GPAC championship game all locked up. But a nightmare ninth inning led to five Bronco runs and Hastings held on for the 14-13 comeback win.

As a result, the Cougars left Sioux City with no hardware and an entire offseason to ponder what went wrong.

The early postseason exit didn't sit well with fifth-year head coach Matt Guiliano.

"It was very disappointing," Guiliano said. "We had anticipated doing a lot more, playing further into the postseason, in what was our last season competing in the GPAC and the NAIA."

USF is in its final year of NCAA D-II reclassification and will join the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference next fall.

Fast forward to February and the Cougars are just days away from the first pitch of the 2012 season opener. Several familiar faces that made up last year’s squad are back, both in the field and on the mound. As Guiliano sizes up his 2012 team, he is excited about the potential of the squad but at the same time is cautiously optimistic and aware of how unpredictable this provisional NCAA D-II season will likely be. "We're heading into unchartered waters, in terms of travel and with our game schedule," Guiliano said. "It will be definitely be an interesting year."

Position Players As for the offensive outlook, USF returns four of nine everyday starters from the 2011 squad, including senior first baseman and second team All-GPAC selection Jimmy Maxwell. Maxwell put up a slash line of .298/.677/.445 in his first year as the Cougars' starting first baseman. The Oceanside (Calif.) product and Southwestern College transfer was second in the GPAC in slugging percentage (.708) and home runs (12). He also held the distinction of being named the GPAC Offensive Player of the Week in the first and last week of the conference season.

Maxwell spent the summer playing with the Jayhawk League's Haysville Heat (Kan.), batting .299 with six home runs and 15 RBI. The Haysville Heat were the 2011 Jayhawk League champions and made it to the Super Six of the 2011 Baseball Congress World Series.

The infield also sees the return of catcher Dylan Dwyer and shortstop Zach Ireland. San Diego City College transfer Jeremy Varner has big shoes to fill at the hot corner, taking over for departed three-year starter Cody Minich. Varner is a left-handed hitter and was a member of the Delaware All-League baseball squad. Sophomore Ryan Fobes will start at second base. Fobes was the Cougars' primary pinch runner in 2011, recording a 17-for-19 mark in stolen base attempts.

Senior utility man Corey Vasquez has redshirted this season.

Guiliano was also tasked with replacing four-year left fielder, 2011 first team All-GPAC and gold glove winner Cody Burgener. Burgener finished his career as USF's all-time leader in hits (181), RBI (133) and stolen bases (69).

"Burg is one of the best that's ever played at USF," Guiliano said. "It's going to take some time to get used to looking out in left field and not seeing him out there."

Junior college transfer Anthony Williams (San Diego City College) impressed the coaching staff during the offseason and will take over the everyday spot in left field.

Senior Kevin Santos will again roam center field. Santos batted .286 last season and made just two errors in center on 71 chances (.974). Right field belongs to a platoon of Damian Kardas and Noah Coleman, who will replace a graduated Jeff Harris.

Pitching

USF returns a cadre of hurlers that recorded 79 percent of the 314 innings pitched in 2011. In all, nine pitchers on the current roster saw action last season.

The greatest loss on the mound is that of relief pitcher Brandon Compton. Compton started 2011 as a starter, but numerous injuries depleted the Cougar bullpen and Guiliano asked his senior right-hander to make the switch. Compton agreed and finished the year as USF's career saves leader (18), earning an all-GPAC honorable mention nod along the way.

"It will be tough to replace Brandon Compton; there is definitely not another one like him," said USF pitching coach Matt Bowman. "Brandon served as one of our team leaders and logged a ton of innings in his USF career. He leaves a hole in our bullpen and will go down as one of the top relievers in USF history."

While USF returns the majority of its pitching staff, it is young group that includes three sophomores. Undoubtedly, USF will turn to senior Brady Nolz to lead a young unit. Nolz was the Cougars' workhorse last year, logging a team-high 68 innings in 14 appearances.

"If you were to come to a USF baseball game and see a guy like Brady Nolz (5'9, 175) sitting in the dugout, you wouldn't be overly impressed," Bowman said. "But if you saw him on the mound, that's another story. The guy's a gamer and just gets it done."

Nolz went 5-3 in 2011 and was a second team all-GPAC selection. He finished with a 2.88 ERA, 53 strikeouts and a 1.25 WHIP. Bowman anticipates that the Cougars' most durable arm will once again be the team's inning eater.

"The great thing about Brady is that you know he will give you at least six or seven innings every time," Bowman said. "He is a very competitive kid with great control and he can change speeds anytime in the count."

Sophomores Noah Coleman and Derek Fischer both experienced successful rookie campaigns. Southpaw Coleman finished 6-5 with a 3.29 ERA, posted a team-high 64 strikeouts and garnered all-GPAC honorable mention accolades. Fischer, a Brandon Valley product, tallied a 4-1 mark in 41.2 innings of work (6.05 ERA.)

"I'm looking to all of them to really be the leaders of the pitching staff," Bowman said. "Having guys like this, willing to take on more team responsibilities, I think this is going help with the challenging schedule that's in front of us."

The only new arm on Bowman's staff is prized freshman recruit Eric Brothers. The lanky (6'3, 180) California native put together a standout baseball career at Valley Center High and was named to the Rawlings/Perfect Game Preseason California Region All High School Senior honorable mention squad. Brothers was also called a "Player to Watch For" in the 2011 & 2012 MLB draft by the MLB Prospect blog and participated in the 2011 Under Armour Preseason All-American tournament.

"Eric is a kid that has experienced a lot of success in his young career against some very challenging competition and we're very happy to have him in the program," Bowman said.

Since his arrival to campus, Brothers has worked hard to make the transition from a high school fireballer (fastball touches 90) to a college pitcher.

"Eric has improved a lot in his short time on campus," Bowman said. "He has made some mechanical adjustments that will allow him to be more competitive in the strike zone and has the ability to be very successful for our program."

The bullpen is the Cougars' biggest question mark of the year thanks to the departure of Brandon Compton. USF returns four relievers that saw action in 2011, but the quartet threw only a combined 23 innings.

"We've got guys with innings out of the pen but not much; they possess the experience but lack the quality innings," Bowman said. "It's going to be a very challenging year in that we're going to have to grind it out at times."

"The pitchers have worked extremely hard this offseason, both in practice and in the weight room, and I think they're ready for the challenge ahead of them," he added. "We are excited to get this season rolling."

The Cougars are also excited about the return of Andrew Christensen, an electric lefty who played his first two collegiate seasons at Citrus College (Calif.). The redshirt junior twirled a scoreless 5 and 1/3

innings before his season came to an abrupt end on March 19, when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Cal State-San Marcos third baseman Mitch Ferguson and suffered a skull fracture. Christensen, who received a medical redshirt, has recovered fully and is anxious to resume his pitching career.

"It's most important that Andrew's okay, but it's going to be very nice to have him back," Bowman said. "Andrew knew he had a difficult road ahead of him, getting back to 100% and has worked extremely hard to get back to full strength...we expect big things out of him this year."

Another pitcher that Cougar fans will see running out of the bullpen this year is junior Chris Nichols, who is making the move from the weekend rotation. Nichols went 5-2 last season (4.53 ERA) in 11 appearances (47.2 IP). He surrendered 56 hits and logged 35 strikeouts.

"As a freshman Chris was used in all pitching situations and then moved to more of a starting role his sophomore year," Bowman said. "We had a big need for a guy who can bring some velocity out of the bullpen, so I went to Chris and asked if he can be that guy for us."

"Without hesitation Chris said "yes," and he has really stepped up in accepting this role," Bowman added. "This is a move that I think could reap significant rewards for us."

Sophomore Austin Goodenow, redshirt junior Mark Vig, junior Austin Burke and junior Danny Hughes are among the other relief pitchers who return for the Cougars.

The 2012 Schedule USF opens its season on Feb. 17-19 when it travels to Denver, Colo., for a four game series against Regis University (2011: 22-27, RMAC). Six days later, USF will head south for a four-game clash with the Missouri Southern Lions (2011: 24-26, MIAA) on Feb. 25-26 followed by a quick trip to Kansas for a doubleheader at Pittsburg State (2011: 20-30, MIAA) on February 27. The Cougars will then return to Missouri to take on the William Jewell Cardinals in back-to-back twin bills on March 10 and 11. William Jewell (2011: 35-21, HAC), a 2011 NAIA Baseball National Championship qualifier, is in its third year of NCAA Division II candidacy and will compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2012-13.

USF will head to California in mid-March for the annual spring break trip. The Cougars will play five straight days in the Golden State, starting with noon tilt against 2011 NAIA National Champion Concordia University-Irvine (43-19, GSAC) on March 18. The CIU Eagles finished 2011 on 25-3 tear and battled back from the NAIA World Series loser's bracket to defeat Lubbock Christian 9-3 in the championship game.

Vanguard University (22-26, GSAC), Cal-State San Marcos (34-19, Association of Independent Institutions), a Concordia-Irvine rematch and NCAA D-II Cal State Dominguez Hills (24-25, CCAA) fill out the Cougars' spring break slate.

USF will make its home debut the last weekend of March, when the Cougars will host NCAA D-II Central Regional participant Minnesota State-Mankato (2011: 39-10, NSIC) for four games on March 31-April 1.

Following that, the Cougars' bus will head down I-29 S on April 3 for one game against former conference foe Briar Cliff University (2011: 7-15, GPAC).

The Cougars then have a string of five home games; four against Minot State (16-23, DAC) ON April 6-7, and a midweek game against Briar Cliff on April 10.

Minot State and USF will both join the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference next season.

USF will next head north to Concordia University-St. Paul (18-16, NSIC) where they will face the Golden Bears on April 14-15.

From there, the Cougars return to the friendly confines of Harmodon for three games, against NAIA independent Dakota State University (3-37, DAC) and cross-town rival Augustana College (30-22, NSIC). The DSU Trojans come to town on April 18 and the twin bill against the Vikings, another NCAA Central Regional qualifier, is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. on April 21.

The following day (April 22), the Cougars will make the one-mile trek to Augustana for a double-header on the Vikings' home turf. First pitch at Ronken Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Cougars will remain on the road, as they travel to Brookings for a mid-week game against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (37-20, NCAA D-I, Summit League) on April 24. USF lost at home to SDSU last season, 7-1.

USF will travel to Montana the following weekend for a four-game series against Montana State-Billings (18-29 GNAC) on April 28-29.

USF will close out the 2012 campaign at home with back-to-back twin bills against NCAA Division II National Runner-Up Winona State (35-16, NSIC) on May 5-6.

"Being able to schedule three of the six teams that competed in the NSIC postseason tournament gives us a great chance to see some of the best teams in our future conference," Guiliano said. "This is one of, if not the strongest, schedules that our program has taken on in the history of USF baseball and I think that shows the progress that we are making as a university and baseball program. When you play great teams week in and week out, it lets us know exactly who we are as a team and what we need to do in order to compete in every series."

Matt Guiliano was appointed the Cougars' head baseball coach in May 2007 and has taken little time to make his mark on the program. In 2011, Guiliano coached first-team All-GPAC and GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Gold Glove winner Cody Burgener. In addition, pitcher Brady Nolz and first baseman Jimmy Maxwell were tabbed as second-team performers while catcher/infielder Corey Vazquez and pitchers Brandon Compton and Noah Coleman were named All-GPAC honorable mention. Offense was the bright spot of the Cougars' 2011 campaign. As a team, the Cougars hit .289 with a .377 on-base percentage. Senior leftfielder Cody Burgener led the way, hitting .393 with a team-high 53 base hits. Burgener finished second in the GPAC in batting average, fourth in slugging (.603) and third in stolen bases (28). Junior Corey Vasquez and freshman Dylan Dwyer also eclipsed the .300 plateau. Three starters had on-base percentages of .400 or better as USF drew 151 walks, 33 more than its opponents. First baseman Jimmy Maxwell shined in his first year in a Cougars jersey. The Southwestern College (Calif.) transfer tallied a slash line of (.298/.445/.677) en route to twice being named the GPAC Player of the Week. Maxwell also led the conference in slugging and was second in homeruns, with 12. In just his third season at his alma mater, Guiliano guided the Cougars to a 33-17 record in 2010, the most wins in school history. The Cougars' finished second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular season standings with a 19-5 mark, also a new school record. USF won nine of its first 10 games, scored at least 10 runs in 11 games and racked up a 13-game winning streak during the season. Guiliano's 2010 squad also set a new school record with 132 stolen bases. Although the Cougars made an early exit from the 2010 GPAC postseason tournament, USF was awarded with 10 players on the All-GPAC Team. Leading the way was designated hitter Bryan Campos, who earned first team All-GPAC honors. Centerfielder Todd Neu, second baseman James Borges, leftfielder Cody Burgener, third baseman Cody Minich and pitcher Jordan Ahrendt were named to the All-GPAC second team, while pitchers Andrew Jenkins, Kenny Tomek and Chris Nichols each garnered third-team accolades. Neu and Borges also earned spots on the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Gold Glove Team. Under Guiliano's direction in 2009, the Cougars finished the season 13-11 in conference play and 18-23

overall. The Cougars advanced to the GPAC tournament as the no. 8 seed, where they knocked off top seed Nebraska Wesleyan University in the first round before being eliminated on day two of the tournament. Jordan Ahrendt, Andrew Jenkins and Todd Neu each received honorable mention all-conference recognition that season. The Cougars capped the 2009 season with a 4-2 exhibition win against the Sioux Falls Canaries, the local minor league squad. Guiliano took the helm of the Cougar baseball program in 2008 and completed his inaugural USF campaign with a 16-28 record and a 12-12 conference clip. Highlights of Guiliano's first season include the Cougars rallying from a three-run, ninth inning deficit to eliminate school rival Northwestern College in the GPAC tournament. That first season, three of Guiliano's players were named all-conference performers: Bryan Campos (second team), Aaron Baker (honorable mention) and Tyler Gillen (honorable mention). Guiliano is a graduate of USF, and his name still dots the school's record book. Guiliano remains in the top-5 of several statistical categories, including: single season hits (first, 92), runs scored (first, 67), triples (first, nine) and batting average (second, .511). He is third on the Cougars' all-time career batting average (.452) and ranked first in career triples (10). In 2006, Guiliano was recognized both as the first team All-GPAC shortstop and the GPAC Player of the Year. He also took home NAIA Region III Player of the Year and NAIA All-American (second team) accolades. Following his collegiate career, Guiliano joined the San Angelo Colts of the North American League, but a knee injury prematurely ended his professional playing days. Guiliano returned to Sioux Falls in 2007 and became the student assist for the USF baseball coaching staff. He also completed a bachelor's degree in exercise science with a minor in business. During the summer months, Guiliano mans an infield spot for the Renner Monarchs, the 15-time South Dakota Amateur Baseball Champions. Guiliano and his wife, Melissa (a USF softball alumna) reside in Sioux Falls. The couple's first son, Brady, was born on July 25, 2011. Matt Bowman enters his second season as the pitching coach for the University of Sioux Falls baseball program. Bowman joined the Cougars staff in 2010. Bowman’s other coaching experience

includes stints with the University of Minnesota-Crookston, South Dakota State University, the Brookings American Legion team and the Brookings High School baseball team. Bowman played his junior and senior seasons of college ball at South Dakota State University in Brookings. The staff ace for the Jackrabbits, Bowman was named a First Team All-Independent selection and a two-time member of the NCAA Division I Independent All-Tournament Team. He was also recognized as the SDSU Pitcher of the Year as both a junior and senior. As a junior, he accumulated a 4.85 ERA in 72.1 innings pitched and 12 appearances. He tallied four complete games and racked up a team-high 48 strikeouts. Bowman went 8-3 as a senior and lowered his ERA to 3.53. Bowman went the distance in five games, leading the team in strikeouts for a second year with 66 and set a school record with 104.2 innings pitched. Bowman attended Alan Hancock Community College prior to SDSU, where he was a Western State Conference All-Academic team selection and second team All-Western State Conference selection. Bowman is a native of Madera, Calif., and a graduate of Madera High School.

2011 – A Look Back

Head Coach Matt Guiliano had one main task during the 2012 offseason: finding a replacement for four-year starting left fielder and two-time all GPAC honoree Cody Burgener. It won't be easy to replace "Burg," USF's new all-time career leader in hits (181). Burg's seventh inning RBI single against Doane College in game two of the 2011 GPAC tournament (5/5/11) served three purposes: it would stand as the game-winner, moved him past Travis Kant (1996-99) on the all-time career hits list and broke a tie with former head USF football coach Kalen DeBoer atop the career RBI list. Burgener also graduated as USF's all-time leader in runs (131), at bats (538), stolen bases (69) and walks (66).

Brandon Compton started the 2011 season in the starting rotation, but after several injuries to the Cougar bullpen, head coach Matt Guiliano and pitching coach Matt Bowman asked their senior righty if he would be willing to make the move to the pen. Compton agreed and had a stellar senior campaign, notching seven saves in 14.2 innings of relief, allowing five earned runs on 19 hits with 18 strikeouts. Compton was at his best in the Cougars’

5-4 victory over Doane College in the GPAC tournament, twirling one scoreless inning and recording his first and only victory of the season. Compton finished his senior campaign as the all-time school career saves leader (18) and received an All-GPAC honorable mention nod.
