Fact Book 5

Head Coach Cathy Swezey enters her 15th season leading the Vanderbilt lacrosse team. She has led the Commodores to six NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 2004 trip to the NCAA Final Four.

When the Moorestown, N.J., native and three-time Division III national champion was hired in 1997, the Vanderbilt program was in its infancy and the sport of lacrosse still was new to the region. Swezey has played a large part in the growth of the sport of lacrosse both at Vanderbilt and throughout Tennessee.

Swezey was the first to bring a team from outside of the eastern time zone to the NCAA Final Four. Her Commodores earned four consecutive berths in the NCAA Tournament between 2007 and 2010. Swezey was named the American Lacrosse Conference Coach of the Year in 2008, the same year she was honored as Vanderbilt’s Coach of the Year for women’s athletics. Nashville played host to a first-round game in the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Tour-nament for the first time in history in 2007.

Swezey began building her powerful program prior to the 1998 season. Her first team went 7-9, but it was a mere two years later that Swezey’s 2000 squad would defeat a Top-10 team, Boston University, for the first time in the history of the pro-gram. Vanderbilt ended that year ranked 13th in the nation—one spot from reaching the NCAA Tournament—and Swezey was nominated as Coach of the Year by the IWLCA.

In 2002, Vanderbilt became a charter member of the American Lacrosse Confer-ence. For guiding her team to its highest ranking ever, No. 8, and its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, Swezey earned Coach of the Year honors from the ALC and InsideLacrosse.com.

The Commodores’ success has produced a snowball effect in Middle Tennessee. Swezey moved her team into a state-of-the-art facility, the Vanderbilt Lacrosse and Soccer Complex, in 2003. A number of former Commodore lacrosse players now work in the Nashville area as high school and youth lacrosse coaches, and Vanderbilt regularly hosts camps and clinics on campus.

Swezey’s coaching career began at her alma mater, Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey). She was a graduate assistant coach for both field hockey and lacrosse from 1994-1996. During that time, the lacrosse team earned two NCAA championship titles, and the field hockey team earned the title in 1995. While coaching, Swezey earned her master’s degree in teaching with a health educa-tion specialization.

The three-time All-American had an impressive two-sport career at Trenton State. Swezey started for Trenton State’s national championship lacrosse teams in 1991, 1992 and 1994, and for the 1990 national runner-up squad. Swezey missed the 1993 season with a knee injury, but returned to the field the following year.

Not only was she an All-American in 1992, she received the honor again in 1994. Swezey was named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament team in 1992 and 1994, and earned the Attack Player of the Year award from the South Jersey Lacrosse Club her senior season. She became a member of the U.S. Lacrosse squad upon graduation in 1994.

Swezey and husband Scooter Gross reside in Nashville with their three children.

SUSAN ELLIS Assistant Coach13th Season Trenton State, 1995

Susan Ellis, the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s 2009 Division I Assistant Coach of the Year, enters her 13th season as an assistant coach for the Com-

modores. Ellis has been a part of all six of Vanderbilt’s NCAA Tournament appearances since signing on to assist former collegiate teammate Cathy Swezey in 2000.

Responsible for Vanderbilt’s defensive philosophy, Ellis has been a key component of the Commodores’ success over the past 12 seasons. She shaped the defensive unit that advanced to the 2004 NCAA Final Four by holding fifth-ranked Loyola and fourth-ranked James Madison to four goals each in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Ellis was in her third season with the Commodores when the squad became the first team from outside the eastern time zone to advance to the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Tournament in 2002. Since then Vanderbilt has returned to the postseason five more times. In 2009, Ellis was part of the first class of IWLCA Assistant Coach of the Year recipients.

Prior to her time at Vanderbilt, the former Susan Pley was the assistant lacrosse and field hockey coach at Moorestown Friends High School (N.J.) from 1997-2000. She helped lead the team to the 1999 Friends League lacrosse championship.

“Our players consistently count on Sue’s knowledge and experience to assist them in their development,” Swezey said. “She will continue to play an integral part in our success and growth as we position ourselves to remain one of the elite programs in the country.”

Ellis was a two-time All-America selection at Trenton State (now called the The College of New Jersey). She received Defensive Player of the Year recognition in 1994 from the IWLCA. Ellis earned a bachelor’s degree from Trenton State in sociology.

Off the field, Ellis assists with numerous aspects of team coordination, including travel arrangements. She also played an important role in building Vanderbilt’s CHAMPS/Life Skills program to enrich the off-the-field lives of student-athletes.

Ellis and her husband, James, reside in Nashville with their three children.

Assistant Coaches

AMBER FALCONE Assistant CoachThird Season North Carolina, 2009

Amber Falcone, named the best defender at the 2009 Women’s Lacrosse World Cup, enters her third season in Nash-ville after joining the Vanderbilt staff as an assistant lacrosse coach

prior to the 2010 season. In Falcone’s first season with the Commodores, the squad

made its sixth overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Last year, Vanderbilt notched a win over seventh-ranked Stan-ford before playing host to the American Lacrosse Conference Tournament.

Prior to leading Team USA to its sixth World Cup title, Falcone was the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s 2009 Defender of the Year as a senior at North Carolina. She led the Tar Heels to a runner-up finish in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. A native of Westminster, Md., Falcone was the first Tar Heel to earn All-America honors four times.

“We are pleased to have Amber on our coaching staff,” VU Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “She has brought great energy to our recruiting efforts and fresh ideas to our program. Our players have grown under her tutelage and we see the differ-ence she has made every day on the field. We are enjoying a very cohesive coaching staff and our chemistry creates a great atmosphere for our team.”
