11www.tangitourism.com

Today, Camp Moore is a museum and is home to hundreds of artifacts. It has a genealogy library where visitors can research names of ancestors or look up some little known fact in the library. Volunteers are ea-ger to share their knowledge - help with a little research or recount the many stories of Camp Moore written and documented in letters and diaries. The weekend before Thanksgiving, every year, Camp Moore hosts a Civil War re enactment. Lawn chairs and blankets are strongly recommended to provide comfort to the visitors watch-ing the Union attacks on the camp - finally disabling it in 1864. All other times of the year, Camp Moore is open Wednesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last tour begins at 3 p.m.

Amite, incorporated in 1861, is the parish seat. Located in the center of Tangipahoa Parish, it is easily accessible from any location within the area. Amite is well known for its oyster industry, dating back to 1949, and hosts the annual Oyster Festival each March. Downtown Amite is on the rebound with a number of quaint shops and unique stores. Just east of Amite is some of the prettiest rolling countryside you will ever see. Here you will find nurseries, horse and cattle pastures, the skeet club, Springview Country Club and the Sandy-hollow Wild-life Management area. Amite lies at the cross roads of Highway 51 North and South and Highway 16 East and West. Interstate 55 is to the west just outside city limits. TheIllinois Central Railroad runs through the town with businesses and residences on either side. Everyone needs a break from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Amite offers an educational, entertaining, and relaxing environment. The Tangipahoa Parish Fair and the Chamber of Commerce Bon Appetite Festival both held in October are among the social functions which can be enjoyed by old and young alike. A Christmas parade is a great way to end the year.

“Little Italy” Traditional Italian bread, cookies and cuisine can be found in Independence. A visitor knows where Independence is by the Italian colors (red, green and white) painted on the town’s water tower and the small statuette of the town’s patron saint, St. Joseph, located in the park toward the center of town.

Sicilian immigrants first came to Independence in the late 1880s to work as strawberry laborers. Many began as pick-ers working for $1.50 to $1.75 per day, and within a year saved enough from their wages to buy their own farms. Independence Italians continued to operate straw-berry farms, and by 1905, Independence had become Louisiana’s primary shipping center for strawberries. It wasn’t long before the Italians invested in businesses, small factories and a small electric power plant. As the popu-lation and cultures of Tangipahoa grew, Independence Italians maintained many of their homeland traditions. The newest addition to the growing list of events held within this historic community is the Independence Sicilian Heritage Fes-tival. Held in March, this festival focuses on the heritage of the first settlers in the town of Independence and attempts to engage the audience through fun, revelry, and time honored customs.

Replacing the Italian festival, which relocated to Tickfaw in 2009, the Sicilian Heritage Festival embraces this history of the region while incorporating modern amenities associated with Louisiana’s greatest festivals.

The “Real Story of Pumpkin Center”

Tangipahoa Parish has a small community with the un-usual name of Pumpkin Center which lies on the southwest bor-der of the parish. At Exit 35 on Interstate 12 is the sign Pumpkin Center/Baptist. Travelers passing through must think the name is from growing a large multitude of pumpkins, newcomers to the area not seeing any pumpkin patches asked the question, “How did the name come about?” To answer this question, one has to go back to the turn of the 20th century. The stories my grandmother and others told of that time in history were all similar. This small community had no name because it started as a settlement of just a few families. Like any other small community in the parish, the people were hard workers, making a living from truck farming, small dairies, or working in the timber industry. One thing that brought this small community together on the weekends was the game of baseball. With their families cheering for them, the men earned bragging rights as a top team. The status of being the best players of the area gave the team the big heads, which in those days were called Pumpkin Heads. One weekend, a visiting team placed a large pumpkin on the pitcher’s mound and smaller ones on the bases to make fun of the home team. The pumpkins on the baseball field, along with a popular radio soap opera of the time, which included a town by the name of Pumpkin Cen-ter, made way for the team to earn its name. One of the players walked to the pitcher’s mound, picked the pumpkin up over his head and proclaimed the field “Pumpkin Center”, and the name stuck. As the years went by, the interstate came through Pumpkin Center. Being unincorporated, a state employee with some influ-ence was able to have the name put on the exit sign. Many of the descendents of the original settlers who still reside here proclaim proudly, “I’m from Pumpkin Center.”

Leonard ‘Skipper’ Jenkins is an author born, raised, and still residing in Pumpkin Center. He is in the process of writing his fourth children’s book named “Where are the Pumpkins in Pumpkin Center?” The storyline will include more of the local residents and historical background. His web-site is throughthescreendoorpublishing.com.

The hands-on discovery experience such as—passenger in a rising balloon, an EMT worker riding in an ambulance, a helper in a pet hospital, fisher-man in a shrimp boat, just to name a few— will not soon be forgotten. The center encourages imagina-tion, curiosity, questioning and realism. Admission is $5.50 per person. Walk from one major attraction to the other. Stop and have lunch at Italian, Mexi-can, French or Southern restaurants. Drop in at a wine bar or a little café for refreshments. Browse in exceptional boutiques. Learn to paint at an art shop or discover an old-fashioned fish market. The hours will fly by. Want to keep going? Visit the Down-town Development District, 2 West Thomas Street, and get a list of coming attractions. Or stop at the Chamber of Commerce Office, 400 Northwest Rail-road Avenue, and help yourself to free brochures and useful information. You’ll want to come back! And we’re delighted to have you!Claiming she began writing to “maintain her sanity in her crazy house-hold” Cuban native and Hammond resident, Katie Wainwright, beauti-fully describes memories of her homeland in fictional form for the readers’ pleasure. Her latest novel, Cuba on My Mind, has been well received and continues to fly off the shelves. Thank you, Katie, for allowing us to share your vision of downtown Hammond and Tangipahoa Parish.

Fourth of July in PonchatoulaBy Kathryn J. Martin

You see our big American flag? So big you can first see it from twelve miles south when you come across the tall I-55 bridge at Manchac … If you think it’s beautiful and majestic from there, you must come to Ponchatoula at 8:00 a.m. on any Fourth of July. That’s when friends and strangers alike form two lines that stretch from the pole all the way across the railroad tracks and, facing each other, we grasp wrists while a brand-new flag is unrolled onto our wait-ing arms. As our Minutemen secure it and tug at the ropes to start it on its upward journey, they’re joined by the wind’s getting in on the act – snatching the flag and unfurling it … Up, up, up she goes against the backdrop of a blue summer sky as we watch mesmerized – the only sounds our “oooh’s” and “ahhh’s” and her “flap, flap, flapping” as she swells out to full size becoming the true Old Glory she is. We swell with pride as we look up at her – civilians with hand over heart, veterans and active personnel with the military salute – all as one saying the Pledge of Allegiance with feeling. We follow up with a patriotic song or two, thinking about the sacrifices that flag represents starting with what brought about our original independence and the freedom for which she still stands. Lots of hugs and handshakes and we’re hesitant to leave such a precious event. precious event. Some who’ve come for years, first to give their young families an important lesson in respect for our history, today stay behind for traditional annual family photographs with their now-adult children and the next generation. As we turn to go our separate ways – some to meet elsewhere for what’s also become a tradition, breakfast together – we see the faces of travelers on main street pressed against their car windows watching us. Faces that look wistful – no doubt wishing their communities too would have something so special. Francis Scott Key asked in our national anthem, “Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave …?” You bet she does – right here in Ponchatoula! May our flag ever wave and may we ever have the freedom to gather beneath her for this celebration of Independence Day … And may you join us next Fourth of July!

This story was contributed by the popular Ponchatoula personality and this yeaThis story was contributed by the popular Ponchatoula personality and this year’s Strawberry Festival Grand Marshall, Ms. Kathryn Martin. Ms. Martin has entertained the masses throughout her life during speaking engagements as herself and alter ego, Miz Maudie. Thank you, Kathryn, for sharing your creativity with us and the world.

Ponchatoula’s SurprisesBy Kathryn J. Martin

I’ll never forget that day … early one Saturday morning in June … I’d just awakened and stepped out on my deck to enjoy a yawn and a stretch when suddenly both were interrupted by what I saw a few houses over across the park. Cars, pickups, SUV’s, and mini-vans were pulling off the side street at all angles with drivers and passengers jumping out and hurrying across a yard. Oh, no, I thought, something must have happened to my neighbor! Heart pounding, mouth agape but yawn forgotten, I heard more doors slamming down my own street. Same scene, differ-ent house. Surely couldn’t be two emergencies … That’s when it hit me – it was the day of the first Ponchatou-la City Wide Yard Sale! And “first” is what it turned out to be… For with the quality of the items, the welcoming friendliness of our people and the bargain of the prices … It’s now the “Annual Ponchatoula City Wide Yard Sale” taking place the first Saturday of each June and stretching well beyond the city limits! Participating residents, churches, schools, organizations and businesses pay a small fee to have their locations highlighted on a map of our area and are given special yard sale signs to display. On the big day, Chamber of Commerce members stand on downtown corners handing out the free maps to happy shoppers. Some folks are so eager to get started they don’t even stop for the maps, choosing to scurry from street to street and road to road stopping at all the signs and sales. Lots of laughter and friendly chatting surround even the most serious bargain hunters. Plan to get in on the fun but be sure to come early and with an empty vehicle as you’ll be leaving with a full one!
