Dave Alden is in his fourth season as the Ichabod and Lady Blues head tennis coach starting his tenure on July 1, 2008. In three seasons at the helm of the Washburn pro-grams, he led both teams to the NCAA play-offs twice and the men’s team to the fourth MIAA championship in the program’s histo-ry in 2010 and the women’s fifth title in 2011.

Alden has led the Ichabods to a 34-22 re-cord in three seasons while coaching the Lady Blues team to a 29-11 record with four com-bined NCAA tournament appearances. In

three seasons, he has coached 32 Lady Blues who have received all-MIAA honors as well as two conference MVPs and on the men’s side he’s coached 35 Ichabods to all-conference accolades. Equally as impressive in the class-room, 33 have received academic all-MIAA honors.

Prior to joining the Washburn program, spent five seasons as the head coach at Metro State in Denver where he led his men’s team to three con-secutive NCAA Regional Tournaments and back-to-back RMAC Tour-nament championships. In five seasons as the Roadrunners head coach, Alden has been named the RMAC’s coach of the year twice, coached two players of the year, one freshman of the year and has had 28 men’s play-ers earn all-conference honors and 11 women’s players earn all-conference honors.

Prior to coming to Metro State, Alden served as one of three full-time staff tennis professionals at Regency Sport and Health in McLean, Va. While in Virginia, Alden served as a coach for both the junior and adult United States Tennis Association (USTA) teams and as a coach for top-ranked juniors in the Mid-Atlantic region. He was also an assistant direc-tor and co-founder of the Hank Harris Tennis Academy in Alexandria, Va. While at Hank Harris, Alden coached several top-ranked juniors in the area, and also developed all of the marketing materials for the academy.

Before moving to Virginia, Alden served as a staff professional and adult program director at the Fort Collins Indoor Tennis Center in Fort Collins, Colo., from 1992-95. While in Fort Collins, Alden was instru-mental in developing a program for top-ranked juniors in the Northern Colorado area and coached USTA junior and adult teams throughout his tenure. Furthermore, he served as assistant tournament director for nu-merous USTA sanctioned tournaments and served on a committee that

designed four additional outdoor tennis courts at the facility. Prior to his years at the Fort Collins Indoor Center, Alden served one year as an assis-tant tennis professional at the Fort Collins Country Club, while he began his coaching career as an assistant at Poudre High School in Fort Collins. In addition to his duties as an assistant varsity coach, he also headed up the men’s and women’s junior varsity programs.

Throughout his career, Alden has served as a USTA umpire, NTRP Tennis Rater, Wilson Professional Advisory staff member and has also been on the ITA women’s regional ranking committee. He is currently on the NCAA women’s regional ranking committee.

Alden earned a bachelor’s degree in sport industry operations with a minor in marketing from Metro State in December 2004. In addition to his coaching duties for the Roadrunners, Alden was an assistant athletic director for marketing in the athletics department. He handled all of the marketing for the department, the corporate sponsor program and was the event coordina-tor for Metro State’s summer concert se-ries. Alden served as the tournament director for the first ever Denver area collegiate wheelchair tournament.

Alden lives in Topeka with his children Alexa and Nadia. His wife Me-gan passed away in December, 2011 af-ter a brief battle with cancer.

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a 11-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Missouri and Kansas, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 20 years, the league has undergone several changes, highlighted by increased participation in national championships.

The MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 14 national team champion-ships and more than 100 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts conference championships in eight men’s and eight women’s sports. Men’s championships include football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, baseball, tennis, and golf. Women’s champions are deter-mined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, softball and tennis.

On Sept. 20, 2010, Dr. Bob Boerigter became the fourth full-time MIAA Commissioner replacing Jim Johnson who spent three years as the league’s commis-sioner. Boerigter spent nine years as the athletic director at Northwest Missouri State. Johnson resigned to become the athletic director at Pittsburg State. Amber Feldman joined the MIAA offices as Assistant Commissioner for Compliance in August 2010.

Larry House started in the summer of 2007 assisting the MIAA in the marketing of the conference events. Kellen Coleman started in the summer of 2009 as the director of communications overseeing media relations for the conference.

Washburn University was established in February 1865 as Lincoln College by a charter issued by the State of Kansas and the General Association of Congregational Ministers and Churches of Kansas. A two-story brick building on the northeast corner of 10th and Jackson Streets was soon erected and the first classes began in January 1866. In 1868, the school was renamed Washburn College, in recognition of a $25,000 donation by Ichabod Washburn, a church deacon

and resident of Worcester, Mass. The university was granted a permanent location in 1865 when Topekan Col. John Ritchie donated a 160-acre site, which at the time was a considerable distance southwest of the city. Construction on the first building began in 1872, with occupancy taking place in 1874. For the next two decades, college President Peter MacVicar conducted an aggressive development campaign. His efforts resulted in the establishment of

numerous Victorian limestone structures which characterized the campus for the next 90 years. Expansion of the school was constant. The School of Law was organized in 1903, as was a School of

Fine Arts and a medical school, which educated physicians until 1913. During the next three decades structures such as the Mulvane Art Museum, Benton Hall and Whiting Field House were added to the campus. In June 1966, a tornado struck Topeka and several historic buildings on campus were demolished. The Washburn community rallied and financial support from friends and alumni made

possible the rebuilding of many school facilities during the coming years. Today, university facilities offer more than one million square feet of modern academic and support space.

In 1941, the citizens of Topeka endorsed Washburn by voting to establish a municipal university, support-ed in part by the city and governed by a local board of regents. In 1952, the Washburn Board of Regents

officially changed the name of the school to Washburn University of Topeka. In 1999, the university’s primary funding was moved from city property tax to county sales tax sources, with the school retain-ing status as a municipal subdivision of the state. In addition to local financial support, Washburn has

received state funds since 1961, which have been coordinated by the Kansas Board of Regents since 1991. Washburn is governed by its own nine member Board of Regents.

Ferré is a dynamic leader who has implemented many internal changes within the athletic department since arriving on campus. He has put increasing scholarships and departmental fund-raising at the top of his list. He has been at Washburn for 29 of

Before joining the staff at Black Hills State, Ferré spent 17 years at the University of North Texas. He was the director of the Coliseum (1987-90) and was the associate and assistant director since 1980. He held the post of event coordinator (1978-80).

Ferré is a 1971 graduate of Texas Christian University, earning a bachelor of arts degree. He earned a master’s in journalism from North Texas in 1982.

Ferré also served a three-year term as Chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball South Central Regional Chairman.

WEIGHT ROOMThe newly completed $7 million Capitol Federal Savings Student Athlete Strength and Conditioning Center has nearly 12,000

square feet of space for Washburn athletes to work out. Ichabod Power is based on using free weights and the feet in contact with the floor, using triple extension of the ankle, knee and hip. This type of training is used to develop athletes stability in the joints and trunk, and power in the lower body when in contact with the playing surface. Each multi-rack and Olympic platform allows the Washburn athlete to perform Olympic Lifts on a solid oak surface.

The multi-racks are self-contained with all the weight on the rack. This allows the Washburn athlete to perform 90 to 95 percent of their work in one area. The racks and platforms have special features that allow the student-athlete to perform secondary exercises with special attachments. The installation of new equipment transformed Washburn’s weight room into a top-notch facility.

TRAINING ROOMThe Washburn Athletic Training Center is one of the most advanced in the Midwest. The facility is nearly triple the size of the one

it replaced. Steve Ice, Washburn’s Head Athletic Trainer, has been with the Ichabods and Lady Blues athletic programs for more than 25 years.

He has a student staff of more than 20. Dr. Iris Gonzalez, the campus physician, is the team’s resident doctor. Dr. Matthew Bohm of the Cotton O’Neil Clinic comes to campus every Wednesday to evaluate student-athletes and to educate athletic trainers. St. Francis Sports Medicine provides injury rehabilitation, education and sports enhancement techniques to athletes of all ages and competitive levels. St. Francis and Washburn University established a new partnership in 2005 to provide addi-tional support for their injured athletes. Michael Ramirez, Certified Athletic Trainer for St. Francis, teaches class in the morning and visits the campus every afternoon working with Washburn athletes to get them back on the court or field. Zach Frank will also assist in training room treatments.

The Lady Blues soccer team moved to the stadium before the 2006 season. The stadium has a capacity of 7,200.
