Winter 2012 Palouse Habitat for Humanity Experiences: Past, Present and Near Future by Habitat Partner Tallah Revord [email protected] palousehabitat.org 208.883.8502 PO Box 3054 Moscow, ID 83843 Habitat for Humanity is such an amazing group of people; I am so blessed to have these people in my life! I don’t mean to sound sappy or cliché, but from the moment my family met Habitat, our lives changed. So many people volunteered and put their hearts and souls into making, not just a house, but a home, a place to call ours, our peace, our land, and our family. In March 2009 our Habitat home was com- pleted, and we moved from Moscow to Gen- esee; not a very far move, but for someone like me who had lived in Moscow my whole life, all my friends were there, and I was scared, not of moving, but of school. I had never been the best student and I was never part of the “popu- lar” crowd, so I was afraid of what my new classmates would think of me. It turned out that there was no reason for me to be afraid. I may have been shy, but I was welcomed into the class with open arms. Because my graduating class was a mere 18 students, we all grew close during high school. My shyness had slowly dissipated as I participated in activities such as choir, softball, and drama. My grades improved greatly, putting me on the Honor Roll multiple times. I was also honored with the title of Gen- esee’s 2011 Junior Miss, giving me the chance to represent my school in the best way possible. Habitat for Humanity gave my family some- thing we will be forever grateful for, so I have tried to give back to them as much as I possibly can. For my high school Senior Project, I orga- nized a benefit concert where the proceeds went to Habitat; we raised a total of $102. I have also performed a few songs for the last two local Beans ‘n’ Jeans. Anything I can do to help. I am currently a part time sophomore at the University Of Idaho, double majoring in An- thropology and French, something I’ve been interested in for a long time. A great dream of mine is to become an Egyptologist; it’ll take me a while to get there, but I’m patient. I am also following another dream; I’ll be singing in an audition for NBC’s Americas Got Talent in Seattle on November 29th. Things are definitely looking up for me. I am so very thankful for everything in my life, the people I’ve met along the way, the experi- ences I’ve had, and the ones yet to come. Thank you, all of you. Habitat for Humanity is such an amazing group of people; I am so blessed to have these people in my life! I don’t mean to sound sappy or cliché, but from the moment my family met Habitat, our lives changed. So many people volunteered and put their hearts and souls into making, not just a house, but a home, a place to call ours, our peace, our land, and our family. Palouse Habitat for Humanity is the Moscow Food CO-OP Dime in Time grant recipient for December, 2012! A Dime in Time is a CO-OP program for community outreach and to promote sustainability. It’s easy to give. CO-OP customers nor-mally recive a 10 cent refund every time they bring in and re-use a tote bag or cup. To support Dime in Time, cashiers ask these customers if they’d like to donate their re-fund to the grant program. This month, Dime in Time funds will help cover the cost of Energy Star appliances in the Purnell fam-ily home. Whirlpool donates an Energy Star stove and refrigerator for each Habitat build, and Howard Hughes Appliance generously provides the washer and drier, microwave and dishwasher at cost. Thank you Moscow Food CO-OP for helping Habitat provide energy efficent homes for our partner families! Shop the CO-OP in December and donate your 10 cent re-use refund to Habitat!

A Reason for Thanksgiving

Three weeks ago I mailed off a cashier’s check to my friends, Tim and Marilyn— two generous souls who loaned me an astonishing sum so I could put money down on a new home in Moscow. I tucked my installment into a newsy note. “Marilyn and Tim,” I wrote. “I’m enjoying my barn red house more and more. It’s starting to feel like home.” Thank you, God. Now that the oaks are browning it’s a season for giving thanks. Soon the generations and their cherished friends will gather around tables holding the yield: the fulfillment of seeds mixed with earth, transformed by nutrients and God’s hidden forces. Our faith tells us that these gifts are God’s blessings… this butternut squash, that new grandchild, health enough that we’re here, together again. Thank you, God. Jotting my note to Marilyn and Tim called forth a new depth of gratitude for this barn red house of mine because my note tells a story of lumber and nails transformed into a place I’m beginning to call home. Friends invited over; dinner in the oven; places fashioned for study, rest and play. The creative Spirit is at work, an offering of space to spark the connectedness we crave. Thank you, God, for our Habitat families that call our houses home. Thank you, God, for opening us to serve and love one another. Thank you, God.
