The person concerned shall be entitled to be heard at such inquiry. Should, however, he or she forego this right by non-appearance or otherwise, this act shall not invalidate any decision of the Association concerned.

RULESStarting:1. A competitor shall be disqualified if he or she

starts before the starting number marked on his or her log has been called by the starter. Start means when the axe hits the log. The ring judge shall immediately throw a red flag at the feet of the competitor to indicate disqualification.

Competition:2. Cutting or sawing contests will be conducted

or sawed in heats, semi-finals and finals or as determined by the committee according to the number of competitors.

3. Competitors in heats must continue to cut or saw until not less than three blocks have been severed.

Any competitor failing to observe this regulation may be dealt with in such a manner as the committee deems fit, unless the judge(s) are satisfied that such competitor is suffering from exhaustion or has broken or damaged his or her axe or saw or is excused for other sufficient reason.

4. At the completion of each event the competitors must remain at their logs until placings have been officially announced.

Slabbing:5. Axes and saws must completely sever logs

into two parts. Any wood not severed at the fixed end of the log shall be deemed uncut wood and will result in disqualification. In all woodcutting contests, it is the responsibility of the competitor to take whatever precautions they think are necessary to prevent slabbing. In the event of slabbing, the competitor who cuts a slab from their log will be disqualified and shall forfeit their right to all prize money. However, they shall not be disqualified for slabbing provided they sever the slabbed piece without assistance from any other person before the whistle has blown. A slab is defined as the portion of a log which is dislodged as a result of a run to a saw cut, foothold or doghold and should not exceed 10mm in its greatest dimension at the saw cut, foothold or doghold end. In the case of an unsevered splinter, the same ruling will be applied as in the case of a slab, that is if the splinter is less than 10mm in thickness in its greatest dimension, it will not result in disqualification.

This exception will not apply where the log is held together by a splinter irrespective of how thin the splinter may be.

Anti-slabbing precautions may be defined as: a) Nailing the end of the log b) Banding with wire, strapping or tape or

c) Any other manner as laid down by the WoodcuttingCommittee.

6. Pushing or pulling the log with axe, foot or hand or causing the judging process to record an inaccurate result will render the competitor liable to disqualification. Pushing the log with the foot includes the application of undue pressure to the loose end of the log after the last blow has been delivered by raising the foot and kicking downwards, forwards or backwards.

7. A competitor shall not be allowed to make any mark with an axe or saw on his or her log before his or her starting time is called, provided that in an underhand event the competitor may make a foothold, or in the case ofastandingblockadoghold.Violationofthisregulation shall render the competitor liable to disqualification and/or suspension.

8. A competitor shall not trim his or her log or hit it with the head of the axe, or cut it in any way except as provided in Rule 7.

9. In all woodcutting and sawing events logs will be trimmed to size prior to the scheduled time for the particular event. After the draw has been made freshening will not be permitted.

10.Logswillbewashedonlywithwater.Nootherpreparation shall be used.

Hard-Hitting Contests:11. Hard-hitting may be either standing cut

or underhand contests as decided by the committee. All blocks to be cut in the conventional manner – any other method is not permitted. The log must be severed by the competitor within a 90 second time limit. The Check Starter shall not be permitted to inspect the log before the full time allowance for each chop has expired, unless the competitor has indicated he or she has completed his or her chop and is willing to have the log inspected. Once a competitor has signified his or her willingness to have the log inspected he or she shall not recommence cutting.

12. A competitor shall not twist, wrench or remove or break a chip by a sideways movement of the axe after the competitor has completed the blow and the blade has finished its penetration into the wood. Any twisting or wrenching of chips by a competitor after the blow has been completed shall incur one extra blow to the score. A competitor removing chips with his or her hands or deliberately pressing chips with the axe shall be liable to disqualification. Should a chip be lying in the scarf in such a way that in the competitor’s opinion it would constitute a risk of injury to himself or some other person if he or she struck another blow he or she may seek permission from the judge to remove it with the axe head only.

The judge’s decision in this regard shall be final.

Page 9: 2012 Woodcutting PS web

WOODCUTTING 7 WOODCUTTING 7

The removal of a chip in such a manner shall not constitute a blow.

13. In the event of a tie in heats and/or the final, placings will be decided by the fastest times.

14. A competitor shall not twist, wrench or remove or break a chip by a sideways movement or the axe after the competitor has completed the blow and the blade has finished it’s penetration into the wood. Any twisting or wrenching of chips by a competitor after the blow has been completed shall incur one extra blow to the score.

Sawing Contest:15. Saw cuts shall be started as close as possible to

the front end of the log and shall not be more than 75mm in from the edge of the top side of the saw cut. Oil may be used on the saw immediately prior to the commencement of the contest but not during the contest. In sawing contests the saw must saw through the log from one side only.

16. In single handed events the free end of the saw must be free of handle or any weight device.

17. The wedger shall stand behind the log and if any wedger in any way touches or guides a saw or touches or guides that portion of the log which is being cut off, the competitor or team concerned shall be automatically disqualified. Definition: “Behind the log” in this regulation shall be interpreted to mean the opposite end of the log to the saw cut.

18. If any wedger causes the judging process to record an inaccurate result the competitor or the team concerned will be liable to disqualification.

19. Any wood not servered at the fixed end of the log shall be deemed uncut wood and will result in disqualification.

Tree Felling Contests:20. Trimming of the sapwood or deeper is

prohibited unless for special reasons and then only after permission is first obtained from the supervisor or his or her deputy. Fragments of bark may be removed. The cutting of practice footholds in trees erected for competition is prohibited.

21. Competitors must put three boards into the tree above each other in the following manner. The first to be approximately 1 metre from the ground and the toe of the board inserted into a new board hole cut by the competitor, the second in a similar manner about 2 metres from the ground, and the third in a similar manner about 3 metres from the ground. From the third board the competitor shall cut the front scarf, then descend, remove each board to the ground and proceed to ascend by putting the boards in the other side as stated and from the third board continue cutting.

Logsmustbecutfromoneside. All boards must be positioned without any

hanging or supporting device. The competitor shall not have any attachments from his or her person to the tree or any device which will assist him to remain on his or her board; except that a non-skid surface on the upper surface of the board and/or the soles of the competitor’s shoes may be used subject to the approval of the committee.

22. Any competitor who cuts through an existing board hole or a patch covering a board hole shall be disqualified.

Underhand Contests:23. Any competitor who cuts into either one or

both footholds at any time shall be disqualified and forfeit his or her rights to all prize money.

24. The competitor shall commence and complete his or her cut whilst standing on the log. Should a competitor slip, fall, jump or become dislodged from his or her position on the log, before the log is severed, he or she must remount and renew his or her position on the log before continuing to cut, except a competitor may get off his or her log at any time during his or her event to cut a slab which may be cut as it lies or by placing it on the log.

25. The cut shall be made by opening the scarf on the front side of the log to about halfway through, then a scarf shall be opened on the back side and chopping continued until the log is severed. The competitor must complete the cut facing the judge. The axe shall be removed from the log at the completion of the cut.

Standing Block Contests:26. Any competitor who cuts into a doghold shall

be disqualified.27. The procedure for cutting the log shall

be by opening a scarf on the front side of the log to about halfway through, then a scarf shall be opened on the back side and chopping continued until the log is severed. The rules governing the conduct of underhand events will apply to the underhand portion of the contests and the rules governing the conduct of the standing block events will apply to the standing block portion of this contest.

29. The second cutter must not touch the block with the axe in any way until the first cutter has ceased cutting.

Two Man Relay Contests:30. One member of each team shall cut his or her

log approximately halfway through; the first member on his or her ceasing cutting shall move away into the neutral area defined by the Committee. His or her partner will then commence to cut on the opposite side of the log.

Protests:31. Should a competitor wish to lodge a protest

on the result of any heat, semi-final or final of any event he or she shall personally lodge such protest on the prescribed form with the supervisor or his or her deputy within fifteen minutes following the official announcement of the placings.

The committee shall deal with the protest without undue delay and make its decision known immediately.

Log Inspection:32. At the conclusion of each event the chief ring

steward shall thoroughly inspect the logs to ensure that there have been no breaches of the regulations.

He or she will then signal the supervisor whether or not everything is in order.
