Two commercial fishermen in !e"ico received the surprise of a lifetime #unday when they hauled up a great whiteshark measuring nearly $% feet and weighing about $&%%% pounds& according to local news reports. The rare catch of

such a large white shark '' at $% feet it(d be among the longest ever recorded '' was made in !e"ico(s #ea of )ortez

near *uaymas& by fishermen who thought they had merely scored a large haul of much smaller fish as they hoisted

up their net.

,e were amazed and immediately realized that we had a huge& dead& great white shark& and then we thought what

are we going to do-& *uadalupe& one of the fishermen& said in an interview with isces #portfishing& which is located

in the a0a )alifornia resort city of )abo #an ucas. The other fisherman was named altazar.

The shark was dead when it was brought to the surface. The fishermen& whose skiff measures $$ feet and is

powered by a 2'horsepower outboard& re4uired an hour to tow the carcass two miles to the coast. 5bout % people

helped drag the behemoth onto dry sand. !ilenio ews reported the length of the fish to be si" meters& or 17.8 feet.

e"tensive tagging studies involving the species. n fact& several satellite tagged sharks from )alifornia and*uadalupe sland ;west of a0a )alifornia< have traveled into the gulf. #o we know they are there.

,hile in gulf waters& adult white sharks are believed to prey largely on =umboldt s4uid and sea lions.
