1Seventeenth century literarycircles had salons, the mod-ern-day hip-hop scene hasmeet and greets. At least thatwas the concept behind Bat-cave Studio’s industry net-working night at Sole Controlsneaker shop Friday, accord-ing to founder and partner BizPorter.

“Hip-hop is about together-ness,” he said. “The culture isin the community.” The eventcame at a time when Philadel-phia’s community is uniquelypositioned on the nationalstage, with homegrown artistMeek Mill’s “Dreamchasers 2”mixtape garnering 2.5 milliondownloads in 24 hours earlierthis month and heavyweightJay-Z coming to town lastweek to announce a locally-staged Labor Day festival.

“I think Philly is at a greatmoment,” said Shayna Sheriof “The Mogul Minute” radioshow. “People have beenwatching Philly. Now doorsare opening and people arepushing a little more.”

“That there is someone rep-resenting Philly on a nationallevel makes people even hun-grier — ‘I was beside MeekMill in videos, I can do that,’”said performer Sonjia “CoCo”Brown. “That’s great for us.Jay-Z coming here, that’s greatfor us. Artists are hungry, that’s why they’re here today.Let’s get together and supporteach other.”

“Now that Philly has thelight shining on us, we got to

take it advantage of it as acity,” said local legend Gillieda Kid, who hopes to be in-cluded on Jay-Z’s lineup buthasn’t yet gotten the call.

Long known as what Portercalls “king of opening acts,”what more does Philly’s hip-hop scene have to accomplishto take center stage? “We’ve al-ways been a musical city, butwe’ve always been lacking ex-ecutive power,” he said. “Tal-ent is just half the fight. Theother half is having someonewith executive power to con-nect the dots and get it out.”

Porter said Batcave is tryingto fill that void by bringingartists together, guiding themthrough the industry and facil-itating the exchange of ideas.“We need everybody to stepoff their pedestal and net-work. We need Comcast to dobusiness with us, we need tobe at the Kimmel Center. Untilcorporations and the mediaget on our side, it’s going toremain a hood thing.”

Shakespeare? No, it’s Tal-iban member Abdul BasirEbrat. “The Taliban listen to po-ems everywhere,” says FelixKuehn, a German researcherwho lives in the Talibanstronghold of Kandahar.“They listen to it in their carsand on their phones. Evenpeople who’re not Taliban, and who may even havefought against the Taliban,

listen to Taliban poetry.”The Taliban publish their

poems on the Internet, too –in fact, their websites have en-tire sections dedicated to poet-ry. But when Kuehn and his re-search partner, Felix Strickvan Linschoten, arrived inKandahar several years ago, they noticed that while West-ern analysts poured throughevery sentence on the Tal-iban’s websites, they ignoredthe poetry. Now Kuehn andStrick van Linschoten havecollected the best poems inthe anthology “Poetry of theTaliban,” published in English

this month. Some of the poems are ro-

mantic: “Your love aside, whatelse is there? It is like ap-proaching the desert.” Someare religious, while expressdespair over life. Yet othersare true warrior poems. “Theysmash the foreheads of ourpeople without guilt. I swearthat I’ll bring earthquakes toyour home,” writes a fighternamed Nasrat.

Taliban have been writingpoems ever since their earliestdays in the 1980s. “They’dfight a battle and sit down andwrite a poem afterwards,” ex-

plains Kuehn. “In that way, they’re not different from sol-diers elsewhere.”

But a book with Taliban po-etry is not uncontroversial. “Itdoesn’t do anything but givethe oxygen of publicity to anextremist group [that] is theenemy of this country,”Britain’s former commanderin Afghanistan, Richard Kemp, told a British newspaper.

‘Avengers’overpowers‘Battleship’ at US,Canadian boxofficesSuperhero movie “TheAvengers” topped U.S. andCanadian box office chartsfor a third straight weekendwith $55.1 million, sendingaction movie “Battleship” in-to second place and topplingcomedy “The Dictator,” ac-cording to studio estimateson Sunday.

“Avengers,” from WaltDisney Co.’s Marvel Studios, has amassed more than $457million in domestic ticketsales since its debut earlierthis month and another$723 million internationallyfor a worldwide total of$1.18 billion, according toDisney.

“Battleship,” which hadhigh hopes of becoming asummer blockbuster in theU.S. and Canada, couldmuster only $25.3 millionthis weekend in the face ofthe “Avengers” juggernaut.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s

satirical comedy “The Dicta-tor,” which has been heavilypromoted in advance of itsdebut, finished in third placefor the weekend with $17.4million. Since its debut lastWednesday, it has taken in atotal of $24.5 million in U.S.and Canadian ticket sales.

‘House’ closes its doors

If you’re one of the dedicatedfew who have been faithfullyshowing up to your weekly“House” appointments, youknow it’s been amateur hourat Princeton-Plainsboro Teach-ing Hospital for the past cou-ple of episodes. But with Wil-son (Robert Sean Leonard) onhis death bed and Dr. House(Hugh Laurie) staring downprison, we’re bettingtonight’s finale (at 8 on Fox)will be packed with familiarfaces. Here’s who we expectto make an appearance — orat least send flowers.

Mark our words: LisaEdelstein has spent the pastthree months at Pilates forher final pencil-skirt close-up.She may be through with Dr.House, but she’s not throughwith bending over a too-lowdesk to sign off on charts.

Over the past eight seasons,Chase handed in his letter ofresignation more often thanHouse quit Vicodin. You canexpect Jesse Spencer and hissoap opera-hot Aussie accentto be back in a white coattonight.

Kal Penn’s character commit-ted suicide when the actorwent to work for Obama. Butbeing alive isn’t a prerequi-site for a cameo, and thesedays he only has “Harold &Kumar” commitments.

Amber’s (Anne Dudek)death and follow-up Househauntings didn’t really makesense the first time aroundin Season 5. But with Wilsondying, an appearance by hisex-wife’s ghost is in order.

Don’t fear

the reaper

Although the series’ finalepisode is titled “EverybodyDies” — a play on House’susual motto, “everybodylies” — it’s not necessarilythe terminally ill Wilsonwhose time is up tonight.

For a show that has neverplayed by the reaper’s rules,it seems unlikely that theonly consistently likablecharacter will flatline. Now,as for House? That’s a different story.

Overcomeyour need to fit in

The question: I feel like I’m nevermyself in social situations. It isalmost like I’m a chameleon and Ijust try to blend in with everyoneelse. I’m not sure exactly why I’mlike this. Can you help?

My guess is that you getanxious in social situ-ations because youfear how people

might respond. Perhaps you’reafraid of rejection or judgmentand you adapt by trying to belike others. Though it maymake sense on one level, you’remissing out on being you, while others miss out on seeingwho you truly are. Follow thisexercise taken from my book,

“BE FEARLESS: Change YourLife in 28 Days.”

1Before you can be yourselfyou must know who you

are. How would you describeyourself if someone asked? Beable to give such a descriptionwith ease and confidence.Make a list of your convic-tions, beliefs, passions, values

and strengths.

2Understand the role thathiding behind a mask plays

in your life. Are you shy, anxious or unsure? Do youfeel inadequate? Perhaps youdislike attention. If so, seekhelp to address any underly-ing issues.

3Practice expressing yourselfby writing out your

thoughts and feelings. Learnto express yourself clearly.

4Don’t care so much abouthow others perceive you,

as you’ll try to fulfill their ex-pectations, not your own.

5Do away with social com-parisons. They only move

you away from being who youtruly are.

6Practice opening up to peo-ple you trust.

No more drama

Female executives still face barriers, someof their own makingA new study examining the ca-reer paths of female executivesworldwide is set for public con-sumption this week. “Womenin Business: Navigating CareerSuccess” is based on a scholarlystudy by U.K.-based AshridgeBusiness School researchersViki Holton and Fiona ElsaDent.

The results promise to beeye-opening for women andmen alike.

The analysis was culledfrom a detailed survey complet-ed by more than 1,400 womenin business management posi-tions, plus face-to-face inter-views with 20 femaleexecutives.

Surprisingly, the barriers toadvancement — and attitudestoward female leadership —

were extraordinarily similar. While policies vary wildly fromcountry to country, the level ofin-house discrimination en-dured by women seems to berelatively the same globally.

“There was very little differ-ence from any of the cultures:Sri Lanka, the Middle East,China and Europe,” says Dent.“They all have their particularapproach to women in busi-ness. There were differences inthe kinds of barriers they faced, but women didn’t seem to befaring any better or worse.”

They also discovered thatwoman unnecessarily disquali-fy themselves from advance-ment.

“The biggest hindrance toadvancement was the womanherself and her self-belief and

confidence,” says Dent. “Whena woman sees a promotion shemight go for, she’ll look at thekey skills and say, ‘I don’t haveall of these, I better developmyself more.’ Whereas, typical-ly, a man is more likely to lookat the job and go, ‘Yeah, I cando most of that. I’ll have a go.’”

“So many people think thatdog groomers get to play withdogs all day. That’s not it at all. It’s a timed commercialprocess,” Booth says.

Everyone lovespuppiesHow can you run ads for aknown “puppy mill” petstore? I am so disappointedthat you would even allow anad like this to appear in yourpaper. I know they comewith money, but is it worthit? Metro does so well withcarrying pet stories aboutrescues and adoptions that itjust doesn’t make sense. The turning point in Jamesvan Riemsdyk’s season cameearly.

Like, really early. A hit he took in the presea-

son shook him up and set thetable for a frustrating seasonfull of injuries and time spentin the press box. He foughtthrough a hip injury, groinstrains, ab and oblique tears, aconcussion and a broken foot.

Even when he returnedfrom injuries, he wasn’t thesame. In the last week of theFlyers’ season, his still-recov-ering left foot took a painfulstep backward when it wasdrained of fluid due to an in-fection. He had trouble gettinghis foot in his skate.

“I did play through a lot of[the injuries] and it did makeme a less productive playerthan I wanted to be, but at theend of the day, I don’t havemuch control over that,” vanRiemsdyk said. “I played withthe cards I was given and dealtwith that. I want to gethealthy, learn my lessonsfrom this season and move onand go from there.”

The third-year player alsodealt with trade rumors. Notonly at the deadline, but evennow in the offseason, with hissalary cap slated to rise from$1.65 million to $4.25 millionthanks to a six-year extension.

But the Flyers aren’t per-petuating the rumors. Theystill think van Riemsdyk is akey part of their future. Theplayer who scored seven goalsin 11 games and was the bestplayer on the ice for much ofthe playoffs last season is whatthe Flyers see in a healthy vanRiemsdyk.

“James, if I was gradinghim, I’d give him a huge in-complete just based on in-juries,” GM Paul Holmgrensaid about this season. “I thinkJames is a good, young playerthat unfortunately for us wasnot a factor for the most partof the year because of injury.”

Those injuries have al-ready dictated what the sum-mer will be like for vanRiemsdyk: rehab, rehab andmore rehab.

“First and foremost I justwant to get myself to feelhealthy again,” he said.“That’s gonna be the key.”

Battle in Beantown: Sixers,Celtics get back to basics

Eastern Conference semifinals resume tonight Garnett needs to stepup for Boston Rebounds, rebounds, rebounds Three things to watch:

1BRING A TICKET. In orderfor the Celtics to moveon, they’ll need a ticket.

The Big Ticket. Kevin Garnettis the C’s most important play-er, and look no further thanthe last four games for proof. In the two games that theCeltics have won, Garnettcombined for 56 points (24-of-37), 24 boards, three blocks, three turnovers. In the twolosses, KG has tallied just 24points (10-of-24), 23 boards, four blocks, 11 turnovers.

2GLASS CLEANERS. What’sone barometer for suc-cess in this Celtics-Sixers

series? Rebounds. In each ofthe four games, the team thatwon the rebound battle endedup winning the game. A quick

breakdown: Game 1, Celtics45, Sixers 41. Game 2, Sixers47, Celtics 36. Game 3, Celtics44, Sixers 37. Game 4, Sixers52, Celtics 38. And the Sixersgrabbed 17 offensive reboundsin Game 4.

3GRAB MOMENTUM. The Celtics flopped in thesecond half Friday — and

yes, credit the Sixers for keep-ing their heads up and takingadvantage — and here we are,all tied up. It’s a three-gameseries, but if the Sixers caneke out another road win, they’ll head back home brim-ming with confidence. Andthey’ll have an opportunity toput Boston away on theirhome floor.

Pat Burrell was back in townthis past weekend.

One last curtain call for afan favorite.

The Phillies signed Burrellto a one-day contract and lethim retire in red pinstripes. He threw out the ceremonialfirst pitch before Saturday’sgame and the team flashed atribute video.

Yes, the stoic player knownfor his charm and charisma —on and off the field — startedcrying in front of the sold-outcrowd. Burrell was the firstoverall pick in the 1998 draft.

“It doesn’t seem that longago,” Burrell said of his daysin a Phillies uniform. “It was areally nice thing for the organ-ization to do.”

For Phillies fans, the last-ing image of Burrell is of himblasting that lead-off doublein the seventh inning in Game5 of the 2008 World Series. Hewas replaced for a pinch-run-ner, but the run turned out to

be the series-clinching one. “One thing people don’t re-

ally talk about is the fact thathe rubbed off on guys in a pos-itive way,” said Chase Utley.“He kept it loose, but hewould also speak his mindwhen he felt it was needed.”

The 35-year-old Burrell isserving as a scout for the SanFrancisco Giants after a footinjury ended his career. Bur-rell said he has no intention ofmaking a comeback.

“I enjoy it,” he said. “I’mnot sure where I’m going toend up with this whole thing, but as long as they still think Ican help, I’ll be there.”

Nationals-Phillies rivalryresumes in South PhillyDing, ding, ding. Round 2.

The Phillies welcome theWashington Nationals to Citi-zens Bank Park today for athree-game set. When last wesaw these two division rivals,Cole Hamels was doing hisbest to stoke a new rivalry. The ace left-hander plunkedrookie phenom Bryce Harperwith a fastball.

The incident garnered na-tional attention when Hamelsadmitted to doing it on pur-pose. Nationals GM Mike Riz-zo called the act “gutless” and

“classless.”Now, Mr. Harper comes to

Philadelphia. Bring your bat-teries.

“Hopefully, I get a coupleof boos,” Harper told re-porters yesterday. “Thatwould be awesome. I’m excit-ed to get in there and play andhopefully they won’t throwany batteries.”

As much as the Phillies tryto downplay the notion thatthere is any bad blood, it can’tbe ignored. Their skipper wasthe first to admit that.

“There will be some talk-ing. Fans, media, everybody,”Charlie Manuel said. “I'm surethe players know exactlywhat happened. They still re-member that. It wasn’t thatlong ago.”

And Hamels? Well, he getsthe start Wednesday night inthe series finale. Stay tuned.
