flowsimulator.TheexistingPIPESIMengine,whichhasbeenextensivelyvalidatedandimprovedthroughout
itsdevelopmentsince1984,continuestobeusedforperformingsimulationcalculations.
PIPESIM2013.1leveragesthelatestMicrosoftsoftwaretechnologiesincludingMicrosoft.NETFramework
4.0,WindowsPresentationFoundation(WPF),andWindowsCommunicationFoundation(WCF).Building
onextensiveusabilitytesting,PIPESIM2013.1featuresamodernlayoutsimilartothatofMicrosoftOffice
2010.
A Better, More Efficient User Experience
ThePIPESIM2013.1userinterfacehasbeencompletelyrewrittenwithafocusonachievingastepchangein
userexperience.Theguidingprinciplebehindthisnewdesignistoenableyoutoworkmoreefficientlyand
getresults
faster.

Improved Design Diagnostic and Simulation of Gas Lifted Wells:
Gas Lift Design (Valve parameter Calculation):
Itwasobservedincertaincircumstancesthatcalculationresultsofseveralvalveparameters(testrack
openingpressure,
surface
opening
pressure,
surface
closing
pressure,
etc)
were
missing
for
the
bottommostvalveselectedbythedesign.Thiscouldseverelyimpactsimulationoperationsinvolving
gasliftedwellsandespeciallythegasliftdiagnosticoperation.Thishasbeenresolved.(SWIFTIssue:
2601918).
Gas Lift Diagnostics (Multilayer Wells):
Gasliftdiagnosticsformultilayerwellsdidnttakeintoaccountthestatusofoneofthelayersifthat
layerwassettoinactivestatus.Asaconsequence,thediagnosticoperationyieldedanunrealistic
result.Thefixhasensuredacorrectandconsistentresult.(SWIFTIssue:2580054).
Gas Lift Simulation (Solution inconsistency):
Gasliftwellswithnnumberofvalvesarelikelytoproduceupton+1possiblesolutions.Thisdepends
onwhichofthesenvalvesareoperatingandallowsforasolutiontoexistwithnogasinjectionatall.
Incertainsituations,thismaycauseinconsistencyinthewellperformancecalculation,inparticularifa
solutionexiststhatdoesnotinjectgas.Itisevidentthatthepurposeofanygasliftvalveisnotjustto
unloadawellduringstartup,buttoalsoenhanceperformanceofanaturalflowingwell.The
improvementensuresthatifliftgasisspecified,itisalwaysinjectedtooneofthevalvesdependingon
tubularandannularpressuredistribution.(SWIFTIssue:2592933).
Hydrate sub-cooling calculation results:
Areportingbugpreventedtheresultsofhydratesubcoolingcalculationsfrombeingdisplayed(note,this
didnot
affect
the
generation
of
the
hydrate
curve
on
the
phase
envelope).
This
has
been
fixed.
(SWIFT
Issue:
2600770).
Mass Balance error across network separator:
Incertainuncommonsituationswhenthenetworksolverchoosestoswitchoffoneofthebranches
between2networkseparators,amassimbalanceoccursacrosstheseparatortrain.Thisissuehasbeen
resolvednowandapropermassbalanceismaintainedasexpected.(SWIFTIssue:2594562).

Whenatwophasefluidflowsinapipethatisangleddownhill,theliquidphaseusuallyflowsfaster
thanthegas.Sometimestheliquidflowsdownhillatitsterminal,orcritical,velocity,wherebyitsspeed
islimitedbyfrictionagainstthepipewalls,andthereisnonetpressuregainduetotheelevation
