The (2010s)

I hope this summer has been a wonderful time for you. It has been crazy to see how much all our lives change and how quickly we spread across the United States. It’s only a little over a year since I took my last finals as an undergrad. Some of us are now in grad school and others are working full time.

Things around campus are changing as they always do. Freddy’s snack bar is getting an extreme makeover. The plans look excellent and we are all excited to see its completion. Friends University also purchased a new art building located in the Delano district so that art courses and studio space will expand significantly.

Falcon Glenn is undergoing some changes. It will be fully furnished this summer to provide a more comfortable transition for students moving to upper class housing from Green Hall.

The University also has a Frisbee golf course designed to weave and maneuver around campus, and students can check out hammocks from Casado.

It is wonderful to see all the changes around campus especially when they benefit the lives of our students. We all know first-hand how

our life was impacted and shaped by this time and we hope that current students experience even greater things than we did.

As far as our own lives go, many of us have experienced great change.

• Amelia Lepping, G’11, is off to Princeton Theological Seminary this fall.

• Chris Tice, G’11, is pursuing his masters at Emporia State University and still working as a youth pastor in Wichita.

• Tyler Ray, G’12, has an amazing job working with special needs children at a summer camp and as a para-educator during the year.

• Colton Heinrich, G’11, is in Houston at optometry school with his wife Logan.

• Paul Teran, G’11, is at KU med school.

• Nathan Nonhof, G’12, got accepted into two acting schools; one in New York City, the other in Los Angeles.

As of June 25, the Alumni Office learned that the Friends University state license plates were shipped from the Division of Vehicles to all Kansas county tag offices. This means that by the time you read this issue of Campus Connection, the plates will be available to pick up from your local county tag office!

A supplemental order for Sedgwick County has been placed as of July 16. If you did not pre-purchase a plate from the University, you can still purchase one “over-the-counter” next time your tag comes due.

If you have any questions, please contact the Alumni Office via email at [email protected].

Dr. Sheryl (Conde) Riney, G’82/M’89, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the age of 52.

Her career included 20 years at Friends University as director of admissions and vice president of student affairs. Following this, she worked in administration at the Wichita Independent School and taught in the graduate program for Southwestern College.

At the time of her death, Sheryl was a leadership consultant at Wichita State University. She was a

devoted Christian and a member of Northridge Friends Church where she served as the leadership clerk of the congregation.

Sheryl had the gift of showing her love for any person she came in contact with in a deep, personal and passionate way. She is survived by her husband, Doug Riney, and their son, Paul Riney Jr.

Memorials have been set up at Intrust Bank for a Student Education fund for their son, Paul.

Friends University celebrated the inauguration of its 13th president, Dr. T.J. Arant, March 30, 2012. The ceremony took place at 2 p.m. in Garvey Gymnasium in the Garvey Physical Education Center.

Approximately 600 students, alumni, parents, friends and members from the local community were in attendance, along with nearly 50 delegates from visiting colleges who showed their support.

Rodney Pitts, G’82, chair of Friends University Board of Trustees, presided over the installation of the president, followed by Dr. Arant’s inaugural address.

Music was provided by the Friends University student brass quintet, the University Concert Band and the Singing Quakers.

A cocktail-style reception in McKay Gymnasium at the Casado Campus Center followed the ceremony, with music provided by the Friends University jazz ensemble and string ensemble. Guests enjoyed a variety of hors d’oeuvres provided by Sodexo catering services.

This historic occasion was a rare opportunity to highlight Friends University and its place within the realm of higher education and the regions it serves.

a member, I challenge you to help make this group something that will be enjoyed by all!

Suggestions include:• Photos from your college days – you never know

what memories a photo will spark!• Job postings – if you’re looking for you or your

employer, ask a fellow alum for their help.• Hello to new neighbors – did you recently move?

Chances are there is someone with a Friends connection who lives in your new hometown.

• Invite your classmates – I would love to see our group reach 1,000 members before the end of 2012.
