    Dear Parent and Prospective Teen Volunteer:

    Thank you for your interest in Zoo Miamis Teen Volunteer program. The Zoo Miami Teen Volunteerprogram is an exciting way for students, 14 to 17 years of age, to gain valuable skills while providing animportant service to Zoo Miami.

    We seek positive, responsible, enthusiastic students with an interest in learning about animals and whocan effectively interact with Zoo visitors. Applicants must be at least 14 years of age by the time theprogram begins on June 18, and entering 9 th to 12th grade; and no older than 17 years of age, and entering12th grade after the summer.

    To be considered for the Zoo Miami Teen Volunteer program, required paperwork must be sent to theZSF Volunteer Office postmarked no later than April 16, 2012. All required paperwork must bereturned as a packet; incomplete packets will not be accepted.

    After the application materials have been reviewed, all applicants will be notified by mail of theiracceptance or non-acceptance. Students selected for the program will attend an orientation session inMay. Parents are required to attend the orientation with their child, as important information will bediscussed.

    If selected for the Teen Volunteer program, candidates will be required to attend one day of trainingduring the week of June 11. Afterward, they will then work Monday through Friday, 8:30am 4:00pm,during the session to which they are assigned. It is absolutely essential that they work the entire shift.Before applying, students with a heavy schedule of summer activities, such as sports, camps, longvacations, jobs, etc., should consider whether or not they have the time to commit to the program.

    Teen volunteers who wish to continue their volunteer work during the school year may apply for our fullyear program once they have successfully completed a minimum of one 2 or 3-week session as a campvolunteer. School year students must commit to two 3-hour shifts per month, on Saturdays or Sundays.

    Enclosed you will find a fact sheet about the Zoo Miami Teen Volunteer program, an application formand reference form. As stated above, the deadline of submitting these forms is April 16th. Do not sendany money with the application. If you are accepted into the program, fees will be collected at thetraining session.

    FACT SHEET

    What do Zoo Miami Teen Volunteers do?

    In their first year, the Teens work with our Summer Camp program, assisting the instructors with the care of the

    children. Each morning, they will greet the children as they arrive, and escort them to the classroom. They will playgames, help with crafts, prepare snacks, and help the instructors in other ways. Each day, the Teen Volunteers willaccompany the campers on Zoo walks, monitor their play and attend to their needs. The Teens will learn about theZoos animals, as the camp groups visit zookeepers at work and the Childrens Zoo staff brings small animals to theclassroom.

    After their first season, experienced Teen Volunteers may work in a variety of functions throughout the Zoo. Theymay interact with visitors and the animals in the Childrens Zoo petting yard, or talk to visitors about the exhibits inDr. Wildes World, or assist with the maintenance of the Aviary exhibit. Teen Volunteers who continue toparticipate after the summer will work on weekends. Assignments will include the Childrens Zoo, Dr. WildesWorld, and American Bankers Family Aviary, as well as, assisting with special events.

    Who can be a Zoo Miami Teen Volunteer?

    Anyone between the ages of 14 (going into high school) and 17 (going into 12 th grade) is welcome to apply. Asspace in the program is limited, we cannot guarantee that all applicants will be accepted.

    When can I apply?

    All completed forms must be sent as a package (not individually) and be postmarked no later than April 16th.

    How does the application process work?

    You will be asked to fill out an application and submit two letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, oran adult who is not a relative. Participants will be selected on the basis of their applications and letters ofrecommendation. If accepted, you and a parent will then be required to attend an evening orientation session inMay.

    How much does it cost to be a Zoo Miami Teen Volunteer?

    The fee, which covers a uniform shirt and identification badge, is $25.00. This must be paid at the training sessionheld in June.

    What will be expected of me as a Zoo Miami Teen Volunteer in the summer program?

    You will be expected to attend the mandatory training session held prior to the prior to the beginning of summercamp. This training session will take place during the week of June 11 (exact date and time to be determined). Youwill be expected to volunteer for the full 2 or 3 weeks (3 weeks for session #1) of the session you are assigned, andto remain each day until 4:00pm.

    Will I have to work every weekend if I participate in the full year program?

    You are not expected to work every weekend. At the end of the summer, you will be given a weekend schedule tofollow. For example, you may be scheduled to work the morning shifts on the 2nd & 4th Saturdays of the month.

    You may also participate in many of the Zoos special events, whether the event falls on your regular day or not.

    What are the benefits of becoming a Zoo Miami Teen Volunteer?

    In addition to enhancing your rsum or college application, you will be developing new skills and gaining anunderstanding of how a world-class Zoo functions. You will have an opportunity to meet new people who shareyour interests in wildlife and conservation. The hours that you work, after your time of training, may be used tosatisfy your schools community service requirement. And, hopefully, youll have fun, too!
