Diversity
Abstract•Among Asian and Asian American college students there is a wide range of diversity due to a number of intra-cultural differences: various ways families immigrated to the U.S., various histories, various religions, socio-cultural factors and various stages of Ethnic Identity Development.
Abstract•Presenters will share their personal perspectives/stories about three Asian ethnicities (Japanese, Indian, & Filipino) and discuss similarities and differences as it relates to the impact of immigration, traditional cultural values, and ethnic identity.
Abstract•Participants will also receive information on the importance of paying attention to individual differences as we interact with and serve Asian American students.
Learning Outcomes1. Understand the range of
diversity and intra-cultural differences among Asian and Asian Americans (immigration history, values, socioeconomic status, education, religion, level of ethnic identity, ways of being, etc.).
Learning Outcomes2. Hear in-depth perspectives
and stories about cultural values, nuances, and ways of being that are characteristic of three Asian cultures (Japanese, Indian, and Filipino).
Learning Outcomes3. Learn how these cultural
values impact the experiences of Asian and Asian American College students and ethnic identity.
Learning Outcomes4. How to listen, in mindful
ways, to the nuances and stories of Asian and Asian American students to better meet their needs, making appropriate referrals when necessary.
