Mission

Benedictine Military School is a Catholic, Benedictine, college pre-paratory school which forms and educates young men from diverse backgrounds, supports a deeper commitment to their faith, prepares them for life through a quality academic program, and instills lead-ership skills through a JROTC program, athletics, extra-curricular activities and community service. Through instruction and discipline, we seek to form men of virtue and integrity who are prepared for life-long learning and service to their faith and civic communities.

Dear Friends of BC,

Earlier this week I was reviewing the draft of our most recent audit (2013–2014). Thanks to your support of BC, we find ourselves in the strongest financial position we have seen in years. Our finances have continued to strengthen for a number of years now and I have you to thank. Thank you for entrusting the education of your sons to us, thank you for financial support, most especially, thank you for your prayers as we continue to prepare the groundwork for the next generation of Cadets who will grow within these halls.

Thanks to a great team effort. As we look at the growth of our enrollment, the expansion of our financial base, the fine quality of our noon-hour meals, the continued development of our academic programs, the success of our athletic teams and the ongoing development of our volunteer activities, we find ourselves in a position where we can confidently reach out to potential supporters and point out to them the many areas in which BC has flourished.

When I say that our current status has been a team effort; BC has been blessed these past years with an incredible influx of highly talented faculty and staff personnel buttressed by an overwhelming show of generosity from Board members to parents to donors to volunteers. Thanks to our volunteers, a number of events have been staffed and so wonderfully executed, leaving all with the impression this team is highly focused. This speaks so well for the countless events that the PTO has managed over the years.

Because of the tireless efforts of the Vic Mell/Jim Walsh organization, numerous Cadets have received badly needed financial assistance while the BCAA has played a critical role in the support of our athletic teams. To these we owe so much.

Due to the leadership of our Advancement team under the direction of Greg Markiton, our fundraising continues to provide previously unimagined levels of support to our operational fund. Just recently, he and our enormously competent Major Gifts Officer, Brynn Bruno, announced the public phase of our Capital Campaign. Through their leadership, this campus stands to be renewed.

Under the guidance of our vigilant Board, chaired by Mr. Bill Schmitt, our Business Office, headed by Barbara Evans, has navigated the variety of seas and habitually has found ways to remain ahead of the tempest. Our audits are eloquent testimonials to their scrutiny and the effectiveness of our Board’s oversight.

Admissions has been one of the primary drivers that has sparked our move forward. Enough cannot be said of Kevin Farmer’s tireless efforts in attracting students to BC. Much the same could be said for the superb efforts of Danny Britt in both attracting talented coaches to our athletic programs, and effectively training and motivating our students. Coach Britt has made our practice areas classrooms in another venue.

All of the efforts above are geared toward preparing our Cadets for college, and to this end we all owe a great debt to Dr. Deborah An-tosca. It is she who has recruited so many of our faculty and laid the groundwork for our future expansion. Thanks to her vision we now have a model for future classrooms in our renovated “B” wing and thanks to her, and our architect Mr. Pat Shay, the outline has been prepared for our future academic expansion. Dr. Antosca’s announced retirement at the end of this academic year will leave large shoes to fill. BC has been blessed by her presence.

Our future holds great promise; we pray that God may grant His blessings on these efforts. Again, thank you for your support of BC.

Dear Friends of BC,

As the Chairman of the Benedictine Military School Board of Limited Jurisdiction, I believe it is im-portant to advise the Benedictine family about the Board’s purpose, responsibilities, vision and goals in hopes of creating an understanding of the motivations and direction of the Board.

The purpose of the Board of Limited Jurisdiction is to support and promote a Benedictine Military School education at a reasonable cost to those qualified students who desire it. In addition, we are to make certain to provide and promote spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional and social development. We also guard the Catholic spiritual and academic heritage of Benedictine Military School. We are policy making board.

Our vision as the board is to always improve through a frequent review of the goals, making sure to change what we need, but never at the cost of the school’s tradition. The Benedictine Military School Board of Limited Jurisdiction consists of 12 members and 12 com-mittees. We are a mix of alumni, business owners, doctors, attorneys, business executives, both active and retired, educators and clergy.

Last year, I shared some board goals with you. This year, I will identify our committees and their chairpersons.

These leaders are dedicated to the service of BC. Recently, we held our annual day-long retreat meeting to examine our performance and set new goals for 2014-15. We also reviewed the community of all schools in Chatham County to be certain we remain competitive and are offering the best for BC. We reviewed our academic programs, enrollment plans, marketing campaign and financial health. Last, we looked at our challenges and discussed plans to deal with them. Our biggest challenge is the aging of the physical plant. Thus, your board introduced and approved a capital campaign in 2013-14, which is well under way. It’s the largest undertaking B.C. has ever had and we are well on our way to success.

The Board and its members are at your service and are dedicated to BC. We recognize our responsibility in being a good stewards of these wonderful assets, which certainly includes our Cadets! As a valued shareholder, your board always welcomes your input and thanks you for your pledge for the campaign.

Benedictine Military School’s JROTC Brigade earned 594 points out of 600 during a Feb. 20, 2014, Regional Formal Inspection (RFI) to retain its position as an Honor Unit with Distinction (top 20 percent in the nation) for a 28th consecutive year. Each year during RFI, BC’s JROTC Brigade is inspected by officers and NCOs from U.S. Army Cadet Command. The purpose is to ensure that all of our Cadets are educated on correct military procedures and military knowledge. Cadets are judged based on their training throughout the year.

Benedictine Military School students in three Physics sections and two Honors Physics sections of Mr. Jim Hicks’ classes launched rockets that they con-structed. The project was the culmination of the second quarter of study, which included instruction in impulse and momentum, energy, fluid friction, and New-ton’s Laws of Motion. The students built their rockets out of commonly available raw materials with the only commercial rocket part being the motor and igniter. Mr. Hicks gave the Cadets a wide latitude to try their own design and construc-tion techniques. The project was completed as part of the integrated Physics curriculum, which includes labs and quarterly projects. The students launched their rockets on the football field during periods 2, 4, 5 (second lunch), 6 and 7. Everyone at BC, as well as parents, was welcome to observe.

Benedictine Military School’s JROTC brigade paid tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with an 8 a.m. ceremony in the Administration Building.

THANK YOU to the following BC families and businesses who chose to send some of their tax dollars to BC through the GOAL Scholarship Program. They redirected a portion of their Georgia taxes to Benedictine Military School to help young men earn a BC education. The Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program is a state-approved student scholarship organization that is eligible to receive your redirected state tax dollars on behalf of Benedictine. The money received is designated for scholarships for Georgia public school students who wish to attend Benedictine. The Georgia Department of Revenue provides a 100% tax credit on Georgia income taxes for amounts redirected to GOAL. Taxpayers who itemize their deductions may also take a charitable deduction on their federal income tax returns. If you currently pay Georgia state income taxes, you are eligible to redirect a portion of your tax dollars to Benedictine as follows:

Single - any amount up to $1,000 per tax year Married Filing Jointly - any amount up to $2,500 per tax year Married Filing Separately - any amount up to $1,250 per tax year Owner of S Corp, LLC or Partnership - any amount up to $10,000 C-Corporation or Trust - any amount up to 75% of total tax liability
