2013-14 ANNUAL REPORT
As of June 2014, the Volunteer Center is now a program of United Way.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ADDRESSIt has truly been a blessing to return to my hometown. After 40 years away, I have come back to my roots and been given the opportunity to serve the community that taught me so much.
United Way has taken great pride in raising funds through employee giving campaigns and allocating these funds to programs providing the most beneficial services. We currently fund 49 programs administered by 22 affiliate agencies.
In my observations, donors are now asking for more accountability; they seek to invest in evidence-based programs that achieve measurable results. The notion of sprinkling money around the community and achieving temporary solutions is no longer acceptable to the savvy investor who does not want to simply manage a crisis. Donors want sustainable long-term solutions, programs and systems working together to prevent, rather than react to, problems.
As the Executive Director of United Way of Sheboygan County, I am committed to finding ways to prevent people and families from having to rely on help from an ever-shrinking social safety net. My vision, along with our board of directors, is to bring people and groups together in collaboration and to find solutions to the problems that affect us all.
No single organization can eliminate the challenge of poor access to behavioral health care, nor ensure that all people have access to healthy food, nor ensure that all children arrive at school ready to learn. But if the community will join us, we can do all of those things!
I am glad to be back in Sheboygan County!

What are Impact Investments?By connecting local non-profits, businesses and government agencies, we can work together to create systemic change. Impact investments build on assets and resources empowering long-term positive change.
Volunteer CenterIn June 2014, the Volunteer Center transitioned to United Way from Partners for Community Development.
Many volunteer centers across the nation are housed within United Ways. Our Volunteer Center is no different. Under the United Way umbrella, the center will continue to build connections between volunteers and community needs. The center currently enjoys the membership of 55 local non-profits, organizations and churches, helping them fill a plethora of volunteer needs by building partnerships with corporations, schools, and non-profit organizations as well as the facilitation of the Volunteer Coordinators Network.
Mental HealthOn March 21, 2014, more than 300 community members and professionals participated in the Community Conversation about Mental Health and Alcohol & Drug Abuse, held at Blue Harbor. The day’s completed objectives included identifying 3-5 community strategies to improve the mental health and alcohol & drug abuse systems in Sheboygan County, soliciting community involvement by asking individuals in attendance to join action teams to move these strategies forward and helping to promote good mental health in our community.
Since then, committee members have worked behind-the-scenes to interpret and organize the results of the day. After months of deliberations, the committee determined three major areas of focus:
• improving access to mental health services• coordination of mental health services and• education on mental health issues
Community action teams are developing action plans to address concerns identified within these focus areas.
School Readiness-Born to SucceedPartnering with a number of community organizations, United Way of Sheboygan County began studying the viability of a School Readiness impact investment. After months of study, the Early Learning Committee proposed a pilot project using the Parents as Teachers (PAT) home-visit curriculum. This pilot program is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2015 in the Plymouth School District, administered by the Family Resource Center.
Food for TomorrowUnited Way has provided funding for the Free Summer Meal Program since 2010. During the eight weeks of the 2013 program, 300 volunteers helped prepare and serve approximately 14,500 lunches to a daily average of 625 children. United Way funding was also used to purchase 500 $1 vouchers for the farmer’s market, which were distributed to children participating in the Sum-mer Meal Program and for the purchase of an EBT machine. This machine allows those receiving SNAP (Food Stamps) benefits to redeem those credits for fresh produce at the local farmers mar-kets.
