BARNES PE CENTERHOME OF THE SCOTS

Barnes Physical Education Center was built in 1972 and named in honor of Covenant’s second president, Dr. Marion D. Barnes. The facility plays host to the Scots’ basketball and volleyball programs as well as other athletic departmenr needs.

During the summer of 2013, Barnes PE Center received a facelift with new interior paint jobs and championship banners honoring all 13 of Covenant’s athletic programs. New bleachers were installed in October of 2013 to update the facility further. Seating capacity is set at 650.

The main floor houses the game court to go along with offices for athletic administration. An aerobic exercise room, weight room and more office space are located on the first floor. The third floor has additional coaches and faculty offices and a classroom.

Although a small venue, Barnes can become loud and raucous as spectators sit close to the action. The women’s basketball team took advantage of their home court in 2012-13 as they compiled a 7-3 home record.

NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Divi-sion III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institu-tions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps stu-dent-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

DevelopDivision III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. USA SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

In 2013, Covenant became members of the USA South Athletic Conference. The conference is comprised of schools from Ala-bama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.

All told, the USA South has 13 full-fledged members along with two associate members (one in women’s lacrosse and one in football).

In volleyball and women’s basketball, the conference is split into two divisions (North and South). Covenant plays in the South division in those sports with Huntingdon, LaGrange, Maryville and Piedmont.

With the exception of cross country, the top eight teams in the conference regular season standings advance to participate in the conference tournament. For those sports with Division standings, the top three from the South and top five from the North advance to the conference tournament.

Sarah Harris Head CoachThe 2013-14 season will be the first for Sarah Harris at Covenant as she was hired in May of 2013.

Harris comes to Covenant from Wheaton (Ill.) College where she has been an assistant for the last three seasons under Thunder head coach Kent Madsen. Harris also previously spent four seasons as the head coach at Grove City College, an NCAA Division III member in Pennsylvania. At Grove City, Harris won 39 games from 2006-2010. She also served as a graduate assistant coach at UNC Greensboro from 2004-06.

“Covenant College quickly won me over with its commitment to pursuing athletic excellence within the framework of a genuine Christian academic environment,” said Harris. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the Covenant community and work towards helping the women’s basketball program grow in what it is capable of achieving on the court and in the lives of the student-athletes in this program.”

In 2009 at Grove City, Harris was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Coach of the Year as well as Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year by D3Hoops.com. In her four years at Grove City, she coached six All-PAC players and one NCAA All-Region player.

“We are thrilled to add Sarah Harris to the athletics team at Covenant College,” said Taylor. “Her extensive background both as a player and coach at the NCAA Division III level was a key factor in our decision. She had a solid career at Wheaton, served as a head coach at Grove City, and has been back at Wheaton as an assistant. All in all she has 12 years of experience at Christian liberal arts Division III institutions, and that is exactly what we need.”

Harris graduated cum laude from Wheaton with a degree in Spanish in 2003. In 2004, she completed a master’s degree in intercultural studies/TESOL at Wheaton and she earned a second master’s degree from UNC-Greensboro in 2006, completing her master of science degree in exercise and sport science.

As a player at Wheaton, Harris started in each of her final three seasons. She helped the Thunder capture the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) title during her sophomore and senior seasons. Harris helped lead the Thunder to an 80-24 overall record, including a 44-12 mark in CCIW play. She earned All-CCIW Third Team honors following both her sophomore and junior seasons, finishing her career with over 900 points at Wheaton.

Harris also earned Academic All-District honors in both her junior and senior seasons.

Taylor continued, “The really exciting aspect for me is that she will pursue a level of athletic excellence without sacrificing our larger mission and vision to recruit, train & equip, and send out Godly women who will make an impact for the Kingdom of God. Sarah understands the type of student athlete we want to attract to Covenant, and she will work hard to bring in those women.”

“My desire is that Covenant women’s basketball be characterized by quality students, talented athletes who love to play the game of basketball, and most importantly, young women who love the Lord Jesus Christ, and I am humbled by the prospect of being a part of such an important venture,” added Harris.

ERIN INGRAHAM Full-time Assistant & Head JV Coach

The 2013-14 season will mark Erin Ingraham’s second season on the women’s basketball coaching staff.

Ingraham is an alumna of Covenant, graduating in 2007 with a major in Community Development with a con-centration in Child and Family Development. While a student at Covenant, she was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team. More recently, she spent two years serving as a Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa.

In her playing career, she set a career-high with 26 points, including eight 3-pointers, against Milligan College on January 6, 2007. During her four years, Covenant averaged 15 wins overall and just over 11 victories in conference play.

Speaking about the opportunity to return to Covenant, Erin said that she is “very excited to be joining the Covenant College Lady Scots team!”

Erin resides on Lookout Mountain, Ga., with her husband, Jonathan, who is the Associate Dean of Students for Residence Life at Covenant.

Laura Grady Part-Time Assistant

Laura Grady joined the coaching staff for the 2012-13 sea-son. She graduated from Covenant in 2008 and is currently in graduate school at the University of Tennessee at Chat-tanooga studying non-profit management.

Grady was a four-year player under previous Covenant head coach Roy Heintz. In her senior season, she averaged a career-high 12.4 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per contest in helping the Lady Scots to a 21-8 overall record with a 14-4 mark in conference play.

Her duties on the coaching staff include assisting head coach Sarah Harris with the varsity team and assistant coach Erin Ingraham with the JV squad.

Grady currently resides in Flintstone, Ga.

Changes abound in the Covenant women’s basketball program for the 2013-14 season. Covenant will begin its first year under new head coach Sarah Harris when they take on Berry on Friday night in the Berry Col-lege Classic in Rome, Ga.

Harris was hired in May of 2013 after spending time at Wheaton (Ill.) as an assistant coach following a four-year stint as the head coach at Grove City (Pa.).

The school also completed the transitional process to become active members of NCAA Division III over the summer and officially joined the USA South.

Even with all the changes Covenant returns two players that have been constants in the program. Two fifth-year senior starters in Jessie Blankenship and Kiaira Cooper should provide both talent and veteran leader-ship on the court.

“As fifth-year seniors, they are the epitome of veteran players, and their commitment to this program during their time at Covenant has made a significant impact both on and off the court,” remarked Harris.

Blankenship is finishing up an outstanding career. The Lexington, S.C., product comes into the year with 1,042 career points and 572 career rebounds and will add to those totals. Blankenship was named to the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) first team and was an NCCAA All-American honorable mention a season ago. She also earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team last year for both her work on the court and in the classroom. Additionally, she has averaged at least 13 points per game in each of her three seasons.

“Jessie led the team in almost every statistical category last season, and I anticipate that she will draw a lot of attention from opposing defenses as a result,” said Harris. “One reason Jessie has been successful on the offensive end of the court is because she simply goes hard and pursues every play.”

Cooper is also back to lead the Covenant backcourt. The senior from Powder Springs, Ga., filled the stat sheet last year averaging eight points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.6 steals per contest.

“Kiaira is gifted with a speed and athleticism that not everyone can possess,” noted Harris. “I’m challenging her this year to use those gifts to increase her abilities as a defender. Her ability to get by people with the drive and her love for rebounding as a guard will help us.”

Covenant also returns GSAC All-Freshman forward Alexis Storteboom who averaged 7.3 points, 6.6 re-bounds while shooting 49.7 percent from the field which led both the team and the conference last season.

Six other returners this year include Liz Dougherty (So., Plantation, Fla.), Elizabeth Bell (So., Powder Springs, Ga.), Kiersten Nielsen (Jr., Cape Coral, Fla.), Morgan Woodward (Jr., Acworth, Ga.), Terah Hooper (Jr., Blairsville, Ga.) and Jess Fikkert (So., Chattanooga, Tenn.).

Despite a coaching change, the Scots have a recruiting class that could pay off immediately. Five freshmen are listed on the varsity roster.

“Our freshmen are already helping us tremendously,” continued Harris. “It can take some freshmen awhile to catch up to the pace of the collegiate game, but I’ve been relatively pleased with the adjustments of this particular group.”

The group is led by Katie Leverette (Shelbyville, Tenn.) and Aleigha Williams (Antioch, Tenn.). Leverette has already shown her ability to knock down shots from outside, while Williams can play multiple positions and is a tough defender.

Added Harris about her recruits, “Katie Leverette has emerged as a consistent shooting threat for us, and her versatility as a guard/forward allows us to use her with some flexibility. We’re challenging her to increase her speed in the fullcourt as that will help our team be even more successful. Aleigha Williams is a natu-rally gifted athlete who also possesses the ability to play multiple positions. She is probably our smoothest defender, and I’m looking forward to seeing her establish her identity on that end of the court as she figures out how hard she can sustain her efforts.”

Other freshmen on the roster include Rachel Price (Sale Creek, Tenn.), Alex Quimby (Denver, Colo.) and Rose Doyle (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Covenant was picked to finish 10th overall, and fifth in the South Division, in the 13-team USA South in the preseason coaches’ poll. The top three teams from the South Division qualify for the conference tournament held at the top seed.

“This is a tough league for women’s basketball, filled with talented and athletic basketball players,” noted Harris. “We are well aware that we will need to show up ready to compete each and every night in order to have any success this season.”

Harris continued, “even with the number of returning players on our roster, we are a new team with a new coach. Many of these adjustments take a great deal of time, and I’m hoping our non-conference schedule and time together as a team prepare us well for conference play in January and February.”

Covenant will open the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday, November 20 against Sewanee at 6 p.m.

Alumni Perspective “Playing basketball at Covenant for four years was truly a privilege, blessing, and so much fun! The relation-ships I established with my coaches and teammates remain more than 10 years later. Not only was my time at Covenant an enjoyable athletic and academic experience, through competition, training, and studying, I learned lifelong lessons about accountability, adversity, victory, perseverance, working hard toward a com-mon goal, the value of Christian community, and God’s unrelenting faithfulness despite my brokenness. I have seen God use these principles years later in my pursuit as a wife, adventure as a mother, and journey as a Christ follower. My experience at Covenant was invaluable in shaping my priorities, my view of the world, and my role in it.

While at Covenant I majored in Pre-Med Biology and minored in Spanish and Chemistry. After graduating in 2002, I married my high school sweetheart and fellow Covenant College alum, Rich Everett. I attended graduate school at Vanderbilt University where I completed my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)/Fam-ily Nurse Practitioner degree. Today I am blessed to be the Mommy of Anna, Jackson, and Katelyn and also work as a Family Nurse Practitioner in Castle Rock, Colorado.”

- Kristyn Everett was named to the conference All-Academic Team three times during her Covenant College playing career and is ranked 3rd in career 3-pointers.

“The people at Covenant were what brought me there more than any other reason. I just loved the people up on that mountain and that was very important to me, especially since I was going off to college so far from home (I’m from Denver). My teammates made the experience for me and we had such a blast together. Many of us still stay in touch and try to play at least once a year.

I believe Covenant prepared me extremely well for life after college. After graduation, I went on to Florida State to pursue a Master’s Degree in Sport Administration. While at FSU, I had the privilege of working as a graduate assistant for the women’s basketball team. That opportunity has opened many doors, including my current position as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Mercer University. I am extremely thankful for my Covenant education and all the people who poured into me and made that possible.”

Coming off consecutive seasons of under .500 records, the Covenant women’s basketball program broke through in the 2012-13 campaign. The Lady Scots, under head coach Tami Smialek coaching in her 20th season overall, finished the year with a 13-11 mark and a berth in the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament.

The season got off to a great start as Covenant won five of its first six games with wins over Millsaps, Oglethorpe, and Sewanee. The Lady Scots would stumble a bit as they fell below the .500 mark in late January after a tough overtime loss to Spelman.

But the team responded and finished the regular season winning six of its final eight contests. Includ-ed in that stretch was a 71-70 overtime victory over conference leader Salem in which the Lady Scots trailed late before making a comeback. Covenant also ousted Agnes Scott 56-45 on Senior Night as Ruth Gibson and Jessica Chittenden played in their final home games.

The Lady Scots fell to Bluefield in the semifinal round of the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tourna-ment, but the season was nothing short of a success.

Junior forward Jessie Blankenship accumulated another special season for the Lady Scots. The Lexington, S.C., native was named to the All-GSAC team, NCCAA Mid-East Region 1st Team, NC-CAA All-American Honorable Mention, and Co-SIDA Academic All-District. Blankenship surpassed both 500 rebounds and 1,000 points for her career during the season. The junior will come into next season 19th all-time in both rebounding and scor-ing in program history.

Blankenship was the team’s leading scorer at 14.3 points per game and the leading rebounder at 7.2 per contest.

The program was also given a boost by its fresh-man class. Haley Soles, Alexis Storteboom, and Liz Dougherty all played a major role in just their first seasons on campus.

Soles played in all 24 games, starting 14, and was deadly from behind the 3-point line. The Bishop, Ga., native connected on 64 3-pointers, more than twice than the next closest on the team, and aver-aged 11 points per game as she earned a spot on the GSAC All-Freshman team and NCCAA Mid-East Region Honorable Mention.

Storteboom added another post presence for the Lady Scots. The Lamont, Mich., resident averaged 7.3 points and 6.6 rebounds on the season. She registered four double-doubles on the year, includ-ing two coming against Salem, and shot just under 50 percent from the floor. Storteboom also earned a spot on the GSAC All-Freshman team.

Dougherty brought a flair for the dramatic this sea-son. The guard averaged just 2.5 points per game, but was invaluable in late-game situations. It was her driving, spinning layup that gave the Lady Scots the lead for good in their upset of Salem in January, just one example out of many from the freshman. Dougherty appeared in 23 games.

Key starters Kiaira Cooper and Morgan Wood-ward along with forward Meagan Kreisel all look to return next season.

The team also took a week-long missions trip to Costa Rica. Partnering with the men’s team, players and coaches worked with several local churches, an orphanage, and a widow’s ministry during their stay.
