Trusted Friends:

Indiana University Northwest plays a critical role in Northwest Indiana, creating access to higher education and ensuring that all students have the opportunity to invest in their futures through a personal, affordable and life-changing academic experience.

Throughout Indiana University, we are proud to be fulfilling that promise, offering students from all backgrounds the promise of earning an IU degree that commands respect and instills pride; the promise of preparation for whatever comes next; and the promise of a lifetime of success.

You, too, are a very important part of fulfilling that promise. Your commitment to this campus, whether through scholarship support, facility improvements, general funding, or advancing faculty research, helps to ensure that IU Northwest continues to raise the bar of excellence in recruiting and retaining exceptional students.

The many dimensions of diversity that characterize our nearly 6,100 students makes IU Northwest distinctive, even among IU regional campuses, and is a reflection of our region’s diversity. Enabling IU Northwest students to complete their degrees is crucial to their futures and that of our region, particularly since an estimated two-thirds of our students receive financial aid.

We all have a personal stake in the future growth and prosperity of IU Northwest, our region’s university. Your gift and the IU Northwest academic experience combine gracefully to create a transforming effect on our campus, and in the lives and careers of our faculty, staff, students and alumni.

In behalf of our entire campus community, please accept my sincerest thanks for your ongoing support of IU Northwest.

I remainYours,

William J. LoweChancellor

A Message from the Chancellor

Thank You for supporting Indiana University Northwest

Our family of donors includes alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, friends and our corporate partners, who all believe in the work we are doing.

You are helping us to fulfill our promise.

The 2013-2014 Honor Roll of Donors includes individuals, as well as corporations and foundations, all who made gifts to IU Northwest between July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014.

Your generosity provides the critical resources for many of IU Northwest’s initiatives and accomplishments.

Thank you for choosing to make a difference in the lives of our students.

With a successful management career, Peter, a married father of two young children was making waves in the business world. But he yearned for more; not necessarily more money, or more power, but a desire to give back, to help others, and to share his compassionate spirit with the world.

So it was four years ago, when Peter walked away from his management career, and at the age of 34, enrolled at IU Northwest and began earning his bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Peter’s success is credited in great part to his com-mitment to his studies, but also to the generosity of others. The scholarship he received has helped him and his family tremendously.

In fact, the scholarship’s impact runs deeper than just tuition assistance. Every dollar he’s received now frees up other money that can go toward the cost of other necessities, like his mortgage pay-ment, the family’s grocery bill, or even the cost of diapers he’ll soon need with the arrival of their third child in June.

Peter’s educational journey will soon come to a close when he earns his IU degree in May 2015. But his enduring giving spirit will continue to shine brightly as he works to secure a full-time position in a hospital’s intensive care unit. The place, he feels, where he can “do the most good,” helping individuals who are desperately in need of his care, his concern and his compassion.

As a first-generation college student, a recipient of several scholarships, and a graduate of a regional IU campus, Charles “Chuck” Gallmeier, Ph.D., really does have quite a bit in common with his students.

That commonality helps him to be an effective educator, but more importantly, benefits his classroom, as his students come to realize that their esteemed professor really does know “what’s going on” in their lives.

Recently named Chancellor’s Professor, a special academic title, Chuck takes his life lessons from when he was a pupil, and applies them to his classroom.

In fact, when he looks at his students, he sees himself. He sees students who can earn their IU degrees, but he also sees students who need a little bit of assistance and financial encouragement to help them reach their goals of earning an IU degree.

It was the support and encouragement he received while he was a student that helps guide his current philanthropic spirit.

His commitment to the IU Northwest campus is endless and enduring, knowing well the tremendous impact that his time, talent and treasure can have on the campus, but in particular, in the life of one student, just like him.

Charles Gallmeier I Chancellor’s Professor of Sociology

When Louise Allard says she’s been involved with Indiana University Northwest since “Day One,” she means that literally. In 1957, Louise was likely playing nearby when her father, then-Gary Mayor Peter Mandich appropriated 27 acres of Gleason Park for IU Northwest during his term. Her father, a staunch advocate for educational access, wanted a local place for all people to learn and earn their IU degree.

That same value of education remains strong in Louise’s family, as she and her husband, Dave, continue to staunchly support Indiana University. Dave, a Bloomington graduate, and Louise, a Northwest School of Nursing graduate, are exceptionally generous both financially and with their time to IU Northwest.

As a way to remember Mayor Mandich’s lasting legacy and significant contribution to the campus, the Allards donated the “Ballast” sculpture to the campus’s Shadows and Echoes Sculpture Garden.

And beyond campus beautification, the Allards support higher education through scholarships and university programs because they, like so many others, truly believe in the need and the transformative nature of education.

As owner of Marcus/Allard Truck Rental in Highland for nearly 30 years, David sees daily the need for philanthropy at IU Northwest. Having employed some of the campus’s students, he sees how hard his employees work all day, but then must also balance their family responsibilities and attend college part-time.

In order to succeed, the Allards believe, access to higher education is essential.

“You can give people money, but it doesn’t really help them,” David said. “But if you give them education, they can help themselves.”
