Rafeal “Ray” Williams enters his fourth year as the head coach men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs. In his short tenure he has re-established the Lion tradition in transition to the NCAA Division II level. Williams had at least one men’s cross country runner on the All-CIAA team and in 2012, Shana Brown was the first-ever female on the All-CIAA squad. On the track, in 2011 Williams guided Matthew Coston to an 800 Meter Indoor CIAA Champion as well as IC4A qualifiers in the 200 Meters, 800 Meters and 4x400 Relay Team. During the 2012 season Diane Lindsey became the first student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Division II national championships while Tarem Cannonier was All-IC4A and ranked in the top 20 in the 400 Hurdles. Williams arrived at Lincoln from a highly decorated NCAA Division II program at Grand Valley State University, which has garnered a reputation for attracting and developing top talent. Since 2006, the women’s teams enjoyed eight top-five finishes at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Champion-

ships, the best was a second-place effort this past winter at the Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. They followed that up with a third-place showing at the 2010 Outdoor Championships, hosted by CIAA Institution Johnson C. Smith. The men, mean-while, claimed five finishes in the top 10, including fourth during the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Cham-pionships. During his six years as an assistant coach at GVSU, Williams specialized with the sprints, hurdles and relays. “Ray” culti-vated 99 NCAA Division II Track & Field USTFCCCA All-Academic athletes, 55 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Cham-pions, one USATF Jr. National Qualifier and one Canadian Athletics qualifier. In all, GVSU churned out 25 NCAA Division II All-Americans and 70 NCAA qualifiers, breaking 21 school records in the process. Prior to coaching at Grand Valley, Williams was a men’s and women’s assistant track & field coach at Marquette University in Mil-waukee, Wis., where he concentrated on sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. In his years preceding the position at Marquette, Williams served as the Director of Student-Athlete Development and men’s and women’s assistant track and field coach at the University of Detroit for the 2001-2002 season. During his stint with the Titans, four of his athletes captured conference titles. Before he joined the Detroit program, he was the assistant women’s cross country and track and field coach at Western Michigan in 2000-2001 and from 1997-2000 he enjoyed a productive stint as the assistant track and field coach at the University of Chicago. While at Chicago, he coached a three-time NCAA Division III All-American and two NCAA Division III national qualifiers. Williams, a native of Chicago, has worked diligently at many national camps throughout his career. In 2012, he was appointed Sec-retary of the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). He has served as an instructor at the UCLA Speed and Power Camp, directed the Speed and Power Development Camp at Grand Valley State from 2005-2010 and served as the keynote speaker and clinician at the 2010 Chicago Public Schools Track & Field Clinic. Williams completed his Mas-ters in Education at GVSU, and graduated from North Central College in Naperville, Ill., in 1995 with a degree in Urban Sociology. In addition to coaching, Williams has worked with the Boy Scouts of America, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Ser-vices and the Campus Outreach Opportunity League (COOL). He also served as the Undergraduate Advisor for the Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc. at GVSU and currently an active member. During his undergraduate years at North Central, Williams was a NCAA Division III All-American in the 110 hurdles in 1995, Team Captain, and three-time CCIW Conference Champion. His efforts helped the Cardinals on their way to a Division III Outdoor Na-tional Championship in 1994. Williams was also a member of the DC Capitals Track and Field Club teams from 1996-2000. Williams and his wife, Danyual, have two sons: Daniel and Kamran.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD ALL-AMERICANS

Since its founding in 1854, The Lincoln University, the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black University, has had an internationally recognized commitment to excellence in scholarship and service. The Lincoln University graduates have distinguished themselves in many fields

including medicine, science, theology, education, law, and the arts. In addition to our more visible graduates – Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall ’30, poet and playwright Langston Hughes ’29, the first president of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe ’30, and the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah ‘39 - The Lincoln University and its graduates have achieved the following additional distinctions: participated in the founding of eight universities in the United States and abroad, created the organiza-tion (Crossroads Africa) which served as the model for the U.S. Peace Corps, and

published the first Alumni Magazine of any College or University (1884). Lincoln graduates also include the first African American bishop of the United Methodist Church, Roy C. Nichols ’41, and the first African American female rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, Lillian Fishburne ’71. The University’s beginnings can be traced back with recognition to its founder, Presbyterian Minister John Miller Dickey, his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson, and the first two students - James Ralston Amos and his brother, Thomas H. Amos. The Lincoln

University was initially chartered as Ashmun Institute in honor of Jehudi Ashmun, the first governor of Liberia, and renamed Lincoln University in 1866 after the assassina-tion of President Abraham Lincoln. Since its inception, Lincoln has attracted an interracial and international enroll-ment from the surrounding community and region, and around the world. The Univer-sity admitted women students in 1952, and formally associated with the Common-

wealth of Pennsylvania in 1972 as a state-related, coeducational university. A total of 15,500 students have graduated from Lincoln since its founding in 1854. The Lincoln University has had 12 presidents that have made distinctive and signifi-cant contributions to the institution’s growth and development. They include Dickey (1853-78); John Pym Carter (1856-61); John Wynne Martin (1861-65); Isaac Norton Rendall (1856-1906); John Ballard Rendall (1906-24); William Hallock Johnson (1926-36); Walter Livingston Wright (1924-26; 1936-45); Horace Mann Bond (1945-57);

Marvin Wachman (1962-69); Herman Russell Branson (1970-85); Niara Sudarkasa (1987-98) and Ivory V. Nelson (1999-present). Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, The Lincoln University offers forty (40) academic majors, six (6) pre-professional programs, and five (5) graduate programs to 2,450 students from 24 states and 35 foreign countries. The University has five programs of excellence in Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Environmental Science), Teacher Educa-

tion, Business and Technology (Accounting and Finance), Mass Communications and the Lincoln-Barnes Center of Excellence in Visual Arts. Currently, The Lincoln University is one of the nation’s largest producers of African Americans with baccalaureate degrees in the physical sciences, computer and infor-mation sciences, and biological and life sciences. More than 25 percent of its under-graduate degrees awarded are in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and com-puter science. In addition, The Lincoln University has the distinction of having 25 of

its chemistry graduates (1989 to 2004) to earn Ph.D. degrees in chemistry and related fields. Under Ivory Nelson’s presidency, the Board of Trustees approved changes that redefined the core curriculum and curriculum structure to keep pace with the ever changing face of higher education and prepare Lincoln’s students for success in gradu-

ate and professional studies and high potential career aspirations. Currently, The Lincoln University is one of the nation’s largest producers of African Americans with baccalaureate degrees in the physical sciences, computer and infor-mation sciences, and biological and life sciences. More than 25 percent of its under-

graduate degrees awarded are in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and com-puter science. In addition, The Lincoln University has the distinction of having 25 of its chemistry graduates (1989 to 2004) to earn Ph.D. degrees in chemistry and related fields. The Lincoln University’s historic campus is located on 422 acres in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Lincoln also operates two satellite campuses one in Coatesville Pennsylvania, the other in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 2000, the University began massive programmatic and physical plant upgrades. In the eight years that followed, The Lincoln University secured $275 million to en-hance the physical facilities and redesign the campus’ infrastructure. These funds allowed the University to construct a new High-Tech Science and General Classroom Building as well as a state-of-the-art International Cultural Center. In addition to new construction, several major renovation projects of the Universi-ty’s existing buildings were undertaken, including Ware Center, University Hall, Grim

Hall, Wright Hall, the Langston Hughes Memorial Library, the Student Union Building and the University’s Center for Graduate and Continuing Education in Philadelphia. It was also during this time that Lincoln achieved its first ever investment grade rating (A-3 rating from Moody’s Investor’s Service) that resulted in the sale of $40 million in bonds to construct a new 409-bed, air-conditioned residence hall to house its students.

In April of 2006, The Lincoln University continued its commitment to enhance the quality education and campus life experience for its student body, with the reinstate-ment of a football program and marching band to commence in fall 2008. The pro-posed move from Division III to Division II in 2006 also required the addition of a women’s softball team to the athletic offerings. In recent years, Lincoln has provided its male and female students the opportunity to participate in collegiate competition in baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, track,

cross country and volleyball. The Lincoln University track & field athletes have com-piled an outstanding record of achievement in NCAA competition, capturing a total of 15 men’s and women’s national championships. In celebrating The Lincoln University’s historic past and promising future, we recog-nize and honor Lincoln’s three historic purposes: 1. To teach honestly, and without fear of censure, what humankind has painfully and persistently learned about the environment and its people.

2. To preserve this knowledge for the future. 3. To add to this store of knowledge. The Lincoln University

remains committed to preserv-

ing its distinction as an intellec-

tual and cultural resource.
