He can hit topspin or slice equally well with the backhand. His volleys are much improved. He is known as intense competitor. He will challenge for No. 6 singles again this year. He places his serve well and is looking to add more pace to his first serve. Tyler runs down balls until he gets the right ball to attack.β ββ John Officer

Blake is the best competitor on the team. He went 22-7 last year in singles. He will play top 2 doubles with Calvin Mark and top 4 singles. Blake sets up the point from the baseline with solid topspin groundstrokes. He then looks to attack and finish at the net. He has one of the best serves on the team and he can serve with power as well as placement. His kick serve is very good. 2013-14 NAVY MENβS TENNISJohn OfficerHead Coach29th SeasonBoston College β79
John Officer, the most decorated head coach in Patriot League menβs tennis history, enters his 29th sea-son as the mentor for the Navy program. Officer has guided the Mids to five of the last seven Patriot League titles and to a league-best eight crowns in all over the last 17 seasons. He also earned league coach-of-the-year accolades in helping Navy to the 2012 championship. The nod was the seventh of his career, which is the most laurels earned by any Patriot League menβs tennis coach. In addition to his league-high eight Patriot League titles in 20 seasons at Navy (and two Colonial Athletic Association crowns), the Mids have reached the finals of the league tournament on four other occasions during the existence of the head-to-head format to decide the league champion and placed second once when the title winner was determined by team points. Officer has led his Navy teams to an overall record of 444-294 and to winning (above .500) seasons in all but three of his 28 seasons. Over the last seven years alone, the Mids have produced an overall record of 121-74 and a mark of 43-7 against league foes. The current format (established in 2003) for determining the All-Patriot League teams has resulted in 15 Mids garnering a total of 29 laurels. This includes Calvin Mark and Peter McDonald, who have been rec-ognized as first-team all-league performers during the 2012 and β13 campaigns. The prior format utilized by the league from its inception through the 2002 season saw 13 of Officerβs singles players and nine of his doubles teams receive all-league accolades. Additionally, members of the Navy team have been selected as the Patriot League Player of the Year on seven occasions, including Mitchell Koch and Nate Nelms, who both received the honor twice, while Mark became the fifth Mid to be tabbed as the leagueβs rookie (freshman) of the year since the award was established in 2002. Navy players also have been annually recognized for their academic achievements. Nick Birger was selected as the Patriot Leagueβs Scholar-Athlete of the Year for menβs tennis following the conclusion of the 2010 and β11 seasons, was the leagueβs overall male scholar-athlete of the year as a senior and was the valedictorian of the USNAβs Class of 2011. Also, Navy players have accrued 53 placements onto the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll over the years. On a national level, Navy attained its highest ranking of No. 75 during the 2000 season and has received a regional ranking 10 times. Individually, Craig Moringiello and Mitch Koch earned an end-of-year top-100 national ranking in 1991 and β99, respectively, while the duo and Chris Thompson totaled five regional rank-ings in singles. Officer also has had four of his doubles tandems garner a regional ranking.
In addition to Officerβs seven Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year awards, other honors for Officer include him being selected as the 1986 CAA Coach of the Year, as the USPTA Mid-Atlantic and National Coach of the Year in 1991, as the ITA Regional Coach of the Year in 1991 and β99, and as the Naval Academy Athletic Associationβs Spring Season Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2007. A native of Hanover, N.H., Officer graduated from Boston College in 1979 (history) before earning a Masterβs Degree (education) from Boston University. He served as the head coach of tennis team at B.U. for two years before arriving on The Yard. Along with his coaching duties at Navy, Officer also is a Professor of Physical Education at the school. Outside of Navy, Officer has completed a 10-part series of tennis instructional videos, and recently authored the book, Discovering Your Passion: The Path of the Spiritual-Warrior. He and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of four daughters.

John MorelandAssociate Head Coach13th SeasonWashington College β96
2009 ITA Northeast RegionAssistant Coach of the Year
John Moreland is in his 13th season as the associate head coach for the Navy menβs tennis program. The Mids have compiled a 186-131 dual match record during his 12 seasons, which includes a record of 62-22 against Patriot League foes. Over the last seven seasons, Navy has posted an overall record of 121-74, a 43-7 mark versus league foes and has won five Patriot League Tournament titles. Moreland was selected as the 2009 ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year following a season in which he helped guide the Mids to an 18-8 record and the third of the teamβs four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. He also led the Mid-Atlantic Section Team at the 2013 USTA Boys 18s National Team Championship. After graduating from Washington College (Chestertown, Md.) in 1996, Moreland immediately began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at Marietta College (Marietta, Ohio). He would return to his alma mater in 1998 as an assistant coach for both tennis programs at the school. During his two years at the school he coached two singles players and four doubles players who earned All-America honors, as well as a pair of ITA regional singles and doubles champions. Moreland would serve as the head coach of the menβs and womenβs teams at St. Maryβs College for one season prior to arriving at Navy. He would coach the con-ference womenβs rookie of the year during his lone campaign at St. Maryβs. In addition to his Bachelorβs Degree from Washington College, he also earned a Masterβs Degree from the school in 2004. Moreland and his wife, Kay, reside in Annapolis.
Jim LaittaVolunteer Assistant CoachFourth SeasonEastern Kentucky β88
The 2012-13 season will be Jim Laittaβs fourth as a volunteer assistant coach with the program. Laitta served as an assistant coach at Ohio State during the 2009-10 season prior to his arrival at Navy. The Buckeyes compiled a 35-2 record on the year and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament where they lost to the eventual national champions, USC. Prior to his one-year stint in Columbus, Ohio, Laitta spent 19 seasons as a head coach with the Maryland tennis programs. While coaching the menβs team for all 19 years in College Park, he also served as the head coach of the schoolβs womenβs team for his first 11 years at the school. When he arrived in College Park, neither tennis program received any scholar-ship funding. The womenβs team became fully funded in his eighth season while the menβs program reached that level toward the end of his time at the school. Despite those limitations, Laitta led the womenβs team to a trio of NCAA Tournament appear-ances (1996, β98, β99) and saw the menβs program earn a national ranking in each of his final three seasons. Individually, he was tabbed as the ACC Womenβs Coach of the Year in 1996. A 1988 graduate of Eastern Kentucky, Laitta began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Mississippi State womenβs team during the 1988-89 season. Mississippi Stateβs doubles tandem of Claire Pollard and Jackie Holden won the NCAA national championship that season. He then was elevated to head coach for the 1989-90 campaign before departing for Maryland after the conclusion of the sea-son.

2013-14 NAVY MENβS TENNIS
Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and womenβs sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University and Loyola University join the Patriot League beginning with the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.
Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 80 percent of its teams posting an APR score of 985 or higher in the most recent data, and 71 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The U.S. Naval Academy dedicated and opened the Tose Family Tennis Center and the entire Thornton D. and Elizabeth S. Hooper Brigade Sports Complex during the fall of 2007. The tennis portion of the facility, named after Maurice (β78) and Terri Tose and their family, features six indoor and six outdoor tennis courts, with the indoor hard courts encompassing some 49,000 square feet. The outdoor courts include the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium, named after Rick (β61) and Donna Fluegel and Bill (β61) and Sandra Moore, while one indoor court has been dedicated in the name of James (β58) and Rosemary Adkins.
βOur new indoor tennis facility will be a tremendous addition for our team training, as well as a draw for future recruits,β said Navy head coach John Officer. βThe facility is first class and already has to be considered one of the finest in the country.β
Located across the Severn River and adjacent to the Naval Academy Golf Course, the 150,000-square foot facility was privately funded and built at a cost of $18.5 million. In addition to the tennis wing of the complex, it also includes hockey and rugby venues, an indoor hitting, chipping and putting facility for the golf team and club members, a fitness center, a restaurant, the pro shop for the golf course, athletic training rooms, numerous locker rooms for all of the Navy and visiting teams, office space for the various coaches and meeting rooms for each of the programs.

Tose Family Tennis Centert The dedication of the Hooper Brigade Sports Complex on Oct. 27, 2007.
The Naval Academy Athletic Association dedicated the Dyer Tennis Clubhouse in ceremonies held in November of 2000.
The facility is named to honor the late Vice Admi-ral George Dyer (Academy Class of 1919) by his daughter and her husband, Jo and Weston Burnett. Mr. Burnett is also an Academy graduate (β43) and retired with the rank of Commander. The Burnettβs are longtime supporters of the Navy tennis program.
βThis is a suitable facility for not only an excellent tennis team, but also a proper way to honor Vice Admiral George Dyer,β said Mr. Burnett. βHe was well known throughout Annapolis for his charitable works, and this will only add to his legacy.β
The building includes coaches offices, a racquet stringing room, locker rooms for both coaches and players, a lounge, a public address system and a viewing deck overlooking the courts.
βWe greatly appreciate the generosity of the Bur-netts to the Navy tennis program,β said then-Direc-tor of Athletics, Jack Lengyel. βThe Dyer Tennis Clubhouse will only help to enhance and strengthen an already highly successful program.β
βWe are very grateful to the Dyer family for their contribution to the Navy tennis program,β said Navy head coach John Officer. βThe Dyer Tennis Clubhouse is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation. It is a wonderful building the team will be able to enjoy for many years to come.β
Navy also boasts six outdoor courts adjacent to the 8th Wing of Bancroft Hall.
