    2013-14 PREVIEW

    3

The Bellarmine University women’s basketball team returns to the hardwood for an exciting 2013-14 season. After a 19-11 sea-son last year that ended in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, the Knights are poised for an NCAA tournament berth for the first time since the 2007-08 season.

Bellarmine has been picked to finish fifth in the Eastern Divi-sion behind Lewis, Indianapolis, Southern Indiana, and UW-Parkside.

After graduating six seniors following last season, the Knights welcome eight new faces to the program for 2013-14. Bel-larmine has added five freshmen and three transfers to this season’s roster; a team that brings back just over 32 points per game, but will have significant veteran leadership along with youthful enthusiasm. The Knights will be one of the youngest teams in the GLVC this season with 10 freshmen and sophomores, and only two juniors and two seniors. Bellarmine will return four important pieces to the lineup: senior guard Therese Montano, senior forward Kelsey Lamb, and junior forwards Darion Hutchinson and Morgan Clemons.

-Montano enters the upcoming season scoring 9.7 points per game through her three previous years at BU. She is on pace to have one of the top free throw percentages in Bellarmine women’s basketball history with her 80% career mark. Montano has also dished out 177 assists over her career and pulled down 256 rebounds.

-Lamb has averaged just under three points per game at Bel-larmine and has grabbed 2.9 rebound per game as well. Last year, she appeared in every game for the Knights and earned eight starts, averaging 4.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per con-test.

-Hutchinson will begin her third year at Bellarmine where she has led the team both years in rebounding and once in scor-ing. She has put up 9.1 points per game over her career and recorded 6.1 rebounds per game in her 57 games played. At her current pace, she will end up within the top 10 of Bellarm-ine’s all-time career rebounds list.

-Clemons will be back for her third season at BU after starting 29 of 30 games for the Knights a season ago. Clemons scored 6.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game last year and holds 4.6 ppg and 4.0 rpg career stats.

Head coach Chancellor Dugan’s eight new players will bring significant talent to this year’s team, including a strong trio of transfers.

-Sophomore guard/forward Mariah Gador comes to Bellarmine after playing a year at Clarion University. Gador started 26 games for the Golden Eagles where she averaged 6.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. She also led her squad with 51 steals on the season.

-Sophomore guard Mackenzie Martinez will play her first sea-son as part of the Knights in 2013-14 following a year at More-head State. Martinez played in 28 games for the Eagles last season. In high school, Martinez led her Butler High School squad to back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in the Sweet 16.

-Sophomore center Jennifer Smith transferred to Bellarmine from Indiana University where she was a member of the IU volleyball team. She redshirted the 2010-11 season and then did not see any action her second year in Bloomington, Ind. Smith was a three-sport star at Floyd Central High School, and before dropping basketball as a senior to focus on volley-ball, she averaged 19.8 points per game, 8.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game as a junior.

The entering freshman class is made up of five strong high school performers standouts:

-Guard/forward Jessica Hardin averaged 19.6 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per game and shot better than 40 percent from the field and from behind the arc at Wayne County High School. She was a member of the Kentucky All-Stars in the prestigious Kentucky/Indiana All-Star game and holds numerous records for her school. She earned 3rd Team All-State honors.

-Guard/forward Kelsey Adwell earned Honorable Mention All-State after averaging 19.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per contest at Pleasure Ridge Park High School. Adwell played for the Kentucky All-Stars in the Kentucky/Ohio All-Star game.

-Guard Destony Curry attended Manual High School where she averaged 15.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.5 steals per game en route to earning Third Team All-State hon-ors. Curry played with the Kentucky All-Stars in the Kentucky/Ohio All-Star Game and won a KHSAA State Championship as a junior.

-Forward Courtney Sandlin comes to Bellarmine from Walton-Verona High School where she averaged 15.0 points per game as a senior. She scored more than 1,700 points and 1,000 rebounds in her high school career. She earned Honorable Mention All-State as a senior and was third in the state in free throw percentage with 83.3 percent.

-Guard Mercedes Cox put up 19.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game at Adair County and earned Honorable Mention All-State. She shot better than 80 percent from the free throw line, 43 percent from the field, and 31.8 percent from three-point range.

The Knights have a 27-game schedule this season, including a trip to Columbus, Ohio to face The Ohio State University in their only exhibition on Sunday, Nov 3. Their schedule in-cludes 14 games at Knights Hall. As part of their home slate this season, 2013 NCAA Div. II tournament quarterfinalist Wayne State visits on Dec. 20 and 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Indianapolis comes to town on Jan. 16 as part of a five-game homestand against GLVC foes.

The Knights will travel to 2013 NCAA Tournament Participants WIsconsin-Parkside and Lewis University on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25, respectively. Lewis was picked to finish first in the GLVC East and was a second seed in the NCAA Tournament a year ago and UW-Parkside topped the Flyers in last year’s NCAA Tournament before losing to Wayne St. in the second round.

    Chancellor Dugan is entering her

    second season as the Bellarmine

    University women’s basketball head

    coach.

In her first year at Bellarmine, Dugan

led the Knights to a 19-11 record and

a berth in the Great Lakes Valley

    Conference Tournament.

On June 22, 2012, Dugan became

the sixth head coach in Bellarmine

    women’s basketball history. Dugan

    took over a Bellarmine basketball

program that has made 14 appear-

ances in the NCAA Tournament since

1986, and has captured four regional

    championships.

Dugan, a Sacred Heart Academy graduate, spent 13 seasons as head

coach at Division I Florida Atlantic University before taking the helm at

Bellarmine. At FAU, she led the Owls to their respective conference post-

season tournament each year. In 2005-06, FAU captured the Atlantic Sun

Championship and earned the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA

    Tournament.

Prior to her stint at FAU, Dugan was head coach at Great Lakes Valley

Conference rival University of Southern Indiana, where she coached the

Screaming Eagles to four NCAA Tournament appearances in eight sea-

sons from 1991-99 including an appearance in the 1997 NCAA Division II

    National Championship.

In 1997-98, Dugan picked up GLVC

Coach of the Year honors for the sec-

    ond consecutive season, leading USI

to the another regular season title and

    capturing the inaugural GLVC Tourna-

ment at Roberts Stadium in Evansville,

    Ind.

Dugan has compiled a career record of

    320-290 (.525) in 21 seasons, and her

    players have accumulated a combined

    eight first team all-conference (GLVC,

    TAAC/Atlantic Sun, Sun Belt) selec-

tions, nine second team, 13 third team/

    honorable mention, two all-conference

    freshman team honors, four confer-

ence players of the year, one defensive

player of the year, and one freshman of

    the year awards.

A four-year letter winner for Eastern Kentucky University (1978-82),

Dugan was a three-year starter and finished her junior and senior seasons

as the Lady Colonels' leading rebounder and second-leading scorer. She

earned a bachelor of science in physical education from EKU and a master

of arts in physical education from Morehead State University.

    Shannon Litton enters her second

    season on the Bellarmine bench,

having joined the team for the

    2012-13 season. However, Litton

    has been on Chancellor Dugan’s

    staff for 18 years.

Litton has been by Dugan’s side

since their days at Southern In-

    diana which continued at Florida

Atlantic. The duo has had success

in both stops, leading USI to a

30-2 season in 1996-97 that in-

    clude a national runner-up finish

and guided Florida Atlantic to the

    2005-06 Atlantic Sun Champion-

    ship.

    Originally from Maysville, Ky., Lit-

    ton played collegiately at More-

    head State, graduating in 1993

with a degree in physical educa-

    tion and health. After graduat-

ing from MSU, she was the head

    JV and assistant varsity coach

    at Monroe County and Fleming

    County before joining Dugan at

USI. She has been inducted into

the KHSAA 10th Region and the

    USI Hall of Fame.

    Crystal Kelly enters her second

year as a member of the Bellarm-

    ine University women’s basketball

    team coaching staff.

    After a heralded career collegiately

    and professionally, Kelly joined the

    Bellarmine program prior to the

    2012-13 season.

Regarded as one of the top prep

athletes to ever come out of the

city of Louisville, Kelly was a two-

time Gatorade Player of the Year

in Kentucky and led Sacred Heart

    Academy to three consecutive

    Sweet 16 Titles from 2001-2004.

As a senior, Kelly was named Miss

    Basketball and participated in the

    WBCA All-American game.

Kelly moved on to play collegiately

    at Western Kentucky University,

again having a career with filled

    with honors and accomplishments.

    She would finish her four-year

    career as the program’s all-time

    leader in scoring and rebounding,

with her 2,803 points ranking 23rd

all-time in NCAA Div.-I history. In

her final year in Bowling Green,

Ky., Kelly was named the Sun Belt

Player of the Year while leading the

nation in field goal percentage at

    64.8%.

After her illustrious career as a

    Hilltopper, Kelly was drafted in

the third round, 31st overall, of the

2008 WNBA Draft by the Houston

Comets. In three seasons in the

league she averaged 4.8 points and

    2.4 rebounds while also playing

    overseas during the offseason.

Established in 1978 with a commitment to the purposes, fundamental policies and basic principles of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has grown to embody the vision established by the founders of the organization and has melded athletic and academic excellence for 35 years.

The GLVC, which at one point over the past decade grew to 17 members and was the largest athletic conference in the country in any division, has fully embraced NCAA Division II. Although formed and developed as one of the nation’s premier NCAA Division II basketball conferences, the GLVC now sponsors 20 championship sports, which includes the addition of football in 2012 and men’s and women’s swimming and diving in 2013-14.

The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three schools - Kentucky Wesleyan College, Bellarmine College (now Bellarmine University) and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC. Under the direction of 14-year Commissioner Jim Naumovich, the GLVC will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary with several online and social media campaigns over the course of the 2013-14 academic season, while a 30-second public service announcement has also been produced.

Since its inception, 16 different institutions have joined the league. Those members include: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994), University of Missouri-St. Louis (1995), Drury University (2005), Missouri University of Science & Technology (2005), Rockhurst University (2005), University of Illinois Springfield (2008), Maryville University (2008), William Jewell College (2009) and McKendree University (2010). Truman State University, which was admitted to the conference as a full-time member in July 2012, is competing in its first year as an active member during the 2013-14 season.

Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season, IPFW left the league following the 2000-01 academic year, and SIU Edwardsville exited the league following the 2007-08 academic year. These departures opened the door for the seven-team expansion over the past decade, allowing the league to grow 17 institutions. Northern Kentucky departed following the 2011-12 season to bring the current membership to 16 schools. Truman then replaced charter member Kentucky Wesleyan, which left the league in 2013 to pursue membership in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

The conference headquarters are located in downtown Indianapolis, one of the many major Midwest media markets in which the league maintains a presence. The GLVC has schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Springfield, Ill. (Illinois Springfield), Springfield, Mo. (Drury), Kansas City (Rockhurst, William Jewell) and St. Louis (Maryville, McKendree, Missouri-St. Louis).

The conference sponsors 20 championships in baseball, basketball, cross

country, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men, and basketball, cross country, softball, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, and volleyball for women.

In the history of the GLVC, member schools have captured 12 NCAA Division II national championships, including nine on the men’s side. Seven of those titles were earned in the sport of men’s basketball, including Drury’s national championship in 2013 and Bellarmine’s title in 2011. Former member Kentucky Wesleyan won the 1987, 1990, 1999 and 2001 crowns under the GLVC umbrella, while Southern Indiana added a national title in 1995. Northern Kentucky won the school’s first-ever women’s basketball national championship in 2000 and followed that with a national title in 2008. In addition, Northern Kentucky became the first GLVC member to win a national championship in men’s soccer, while USI staked claim to the GLVC’s first baseball national championship in 2010. SIU Edwardsville was the first GLVC member to win a national championship in softball in 2007.

The league also takes pride in recognizing the many academic and athletic accomplishments achieved by its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. In 2012-13, the GLVC ranked third among 23 NCAA Division II conferences in Academic Success Rate (ASR) at 80 percent and third in the Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) at 62 percent for all student-athletes. In addition, a conference-record 2,002 student-athletes were recognized with Academic All-GLVC recognition in 2012-13, while a league-best 225 student- athletes earned the GLVC Council of Presidents’ Academic Excellence Award for grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher.

In 2001, the league announced the creation of the GLVC Hall of Fame, with the first class being inducted in 2002. The GLVC annually presents the Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award to the top male and female student-athlete in the league, and the Dr. Charles Bertram Alumni Award of Distinction to alumni who both succeeded while a GLVC student-athlete and excelled in accomplishments after graduation.
