At the heart of the UW-Stevens Point campus is the new Dreyfus University Center. Its dining options, services, and amenities make it a fixture of everyday campus life. Visitors and the area communi-ty enjoy the Dreyfus University Center as well, and the facility is site of numerous events and conferences for off-campus customers who take advantage of such an impressive facility located in the heart of Wisconsin.

The DeBot Center has undergone several renovations over the past several years and serves as one of the main dining facilities for stu-dents. DeBot is open seven days a week serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lower level features a convience store and a made-to-or-der market where students can purchase food through their meal plan.

Dr. Bernie L. Patterson took over as Chancellor at UW-Stevens Point in July of 2010, becoming the 14th chancellor in the 116 year history of the university. Chancellor Patterson came to UWSP after serving as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Oklahoma City University since 2002.

UWSP opened its newest residence hall in the fall of 2011. The suite-style dorm is five stories tall and includes 82 suites, room for 328 student beds. The building obtained a silver LEED green building certification.

UW-Stevens Point is again ranked as one of the best public universities in the Midwest. U.S. News and World Report places UWSP in the Top Ten Regional Universities in its 2011 rankings. UWSP has become a perennial all-star in the U.S News rankings, which take into account such factors as a school’s student retention and graduate rates, average class size, and the academic talent of the freshman class.

Pointers have developed a reputation as one of the most involved and connected student bodies in the Midwest. Coaching Staff

Johnny Johnson

Head Coach

16th Season

In his 15 seasons as the head coach of the UW-Stevens Point wrestling program, Johnny Johnson has established a very successful coaching résumé.

Johnson is in his 16th season as the Pointers’ head coach and 20th year overall in the UW-Stevens Point program in 2013-14. This will mark Johnson’s 26th year in the college coaching ranks. He has coached 46 wrestlers in the national meet and boasts a 60-23-1 WIAC dual meet record. Johnson earned his 100th career dual meet victory at UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 3, 2009. In 2011, Johnson passed Marty Loy as the UWSP winningest coach and is only the second head coach in UWSP history to tally more than 100 victories and in 2013 was named the WIAC Coach of the Year.

UW-Stevens Point has finished in the top 11 in the national meet five of the last eight years. The Pointers have also finished in the top three in the WIAC every season during Johnson’s tenure, including an undefeated season in WIAC dual meets in 2003-04. Johnson’s 2011 team also posted an eighth place finish at the NWCA National duals.

Johnson has also trained three national champions. Yan White was a three-time national finalist who won the national title in 2002. Cody Koenig and Brad Marten claimed national titles in 2003, when the Pointers achieved a school record third-place finish at the national meet.

Johnson has coached several successful individuals during his term, including three-time All-American Ben Engelland 2009-11. Overall, Johnson has trained 25 All-Americans. He has taken wrestlers to the national meet in every one of his 15 seasons. Johnson guided six wrestlers to the national meet in 2007 where the Pointers finished 10th. Johnson has also helped 24 individuals secure WIAC championships. Additionally, Johnson has had 29 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, including Mike Hayes who was the 2006 WIAC Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Johnson also worked closely with three-time Olympian and 1996 Silver Medalist Dennis Hall. Hall a current UW-Stevens Point assistant coach was joined in the corner by Johnson during the 2004 Olympic Trials and on the trip to Athens, Greece.

Prior to becoming head coach, Johnson served as the Pointers’ top assistant and the state coach for the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation.

Before coming to UW-Stevens Point, Johnson served as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota for eight seasons. There he was instrumental in developing 18 All-Americans, 10 Big Ten champions, and a No. 1 dual team ranking in 1994.

Johnson was a member of USA Wrestling’s National Coaching Pool and in 1996 served as the head coach of the Junior World Team, taking the team to compete in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Johnson wrestled collegiately at the University of Oklahoma, where he was a two-time Division I All-American for the Sooners while compiling 112-22-2 record. After college, he gained considerable international experience as a member of three U.S. National teams and an alternate to the 1988 U.S. Olympic team.

Having completed his bachelor’s degree in journalism at Oklahoma and his master’s in education at UW-Stevens Point, Johnson teaches Adventure Education in the School Physical Education & Athletic Training at UW-Stevens Point and coordinates tje Adventure Education minor, which he helped developed for the school of PEAT.

A native of Midwest City, Okla., Johnny and his wife, Julie, have three children – son, Jesse, and daughters, Taylor and Gabrialla. They reside in Plover.

Jake Wozniak

Head Assistant Coach

Fifth Season

Wozniak is in his third season as the head assistant for the UWSP wrestling program in 2013-14. This is his fifth year as an assistant overall.

A four-year letterwinner for the Pointers, Wozniak turned in the most impressive season of his career in his final season at 165

pounds, boasting a 34-6 record on his way to qualifying for his second NCAA Championship. Wozniak was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) champion at 165 pounds and was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

For his career, Wozniak tallied 78 wins including 20-plus wins his last two seasons. The native of Stanley, Wis., was also a two-time state qualifier in high school, posting a career mark of 118-19 at Stanley-Boyd High School.

Chase DeCleene

Assistant Coach

First Season

Chase is in his first year as a student assistant coach for the Pointers. Chase, a 2009 graduate of UW-Stevens Point, has returned to school to earn a teaching degree.

During his time on the wrestling team DeCleene was a two-time NCAA Qualifier and earned All-American honors as a senior finishing 6th at the National tournament. Chase also excelled in the classroom, earning NWCA Scholar All-American status in 2009.

Previously, DeCleene worked with the Ashwaubenon Middle and High School wrestling teams.

Chris Brown

Assistant Coach

Sixth Season

Chris is in his sixth season as an assistnt coach with the Pointers after finishing his career as a four-year letterwinner for the Pointers in 2008.

Chris placed second at the WIAC championshps. For his career, Chris finished with over 50 wins.

Dennis Hall

Assistant Coach

Dennis Hall, member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and three-time Olympian, returns to the UW-Stevens Point wrestling program for his second stint as assistant coach. Hall is one of the most decorated Greco-Roman wrestlers in U.S. history. In 1995, he became only the second U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler ever to win a World Championship, defeating four former World Champions to claim that title. Hall continued to wrestle to success at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta where he brought home the silver medal. During his competitive years Hall also claimed the World Team Trials Championship seven times (1990, 1993-95, 1997-99) and was a 10-time U.S. National Champion (1992-2001).

Arguably the most recognizable wrestler in Wisconsin, Hall brings a wealth of coaching knowledge from every level of wrestling. He operates his club, World Gold Wrestling, out of the UWSP wrestling room and also provides one-on-one training in his Stevens Point home to wrestlers of all levels—grade school, high school, college and Olympic. Wrestlers from all over the nation and even the world have travelled to Stevens Point to train with Dennis. Most recently he was asked to travel and coach with the world team in Bulgaria. Hall, who was the head assistant coach at UWSP from 2000-03 and helped the Pointers to a third-place finish at the 2003 NCAA Championships, served as head Greco-Roman coach at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Michigan in 2009-10.

Believing in the development of youth wrestling and dedicated to grow and advance the way wrestling is taught and perceived, Dennis Hall will continue to offer his World Gold Wrestling camps, clinics, clubs and private lessons to the athletes of Central Wisconsin. Hall and his wife Chrissy and have four children: Tyler, Brandon, Jake and Alyssa.

Joel Burdick

Assistant Coach

Seventh Season

Joel Burdick is in his seventh year as an assistant coach for the Pointers.

A three-time national qualifier, Burdick lends his experience to the middle weight classes. Burdick was an All-American in 2005 with a seventh-place finish at

nationals while posting a 31-10 overall record. He completed his four-year career with an 86-44 overall record. Burdick was the Outstanding Wrestler at the 2005 WIAC Championship after winning the 141 pound conference title.

Burdick lives in Stevens Point with his wife, Nikki, and son, Zac.

RYAN CONATStudent Assistant

After finishing his senior season last year as an NCAA Qualifier, Ryan Conat joins the coaching staff for the 2013-14 season.

A four-year letterwinner and two-time team captain, Conat amassed over 75 wins in his career with UWSP. His senior season he earned second team All-WIAC and was a National qualifier. Ryan also achieved NWCA Scholar All-American status as a senior year.

JORDAN KUSTStudent Assistant

Kust will finish his last year of school and assist the coaching staff in 2013-14.

As a competitor, Kust was a four-year starter and two-time team captain. His 105-56 record ranks him 13th in overall win percentage and eighth in overall wins in the Pointers wrestling record books.

SHANE SWEENEYStudent Assistant

Sweeney is finishing his degree coursework while serving as a student assistant coach with the Pointers in 2013-14.

A four-time letterwinner, Sweeney saw extensive varsity action in all four seasons. In his senior season he had 20 wins and finished his career close to 70 wins.

Bob Berceau1989 134lb National Champion

Bob Berceau became the first NCAA Division III Champion in UW-Stevens Point history when he claimed the 134-pound title in 1989. He finished his career with a 94-31 record. Bob was inducted into the UW-Stevens Point Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Perry Miller1997 Heavyweight National Champion

1998 Heavyweight National Champion

The only four-time All-American in program history, Perry Miller won the 1997 and 1998 heavyweight national titles. As a freshman Miller finished seventh at the national tournament and was a runner-up as a sophomore before claiming back-to-back titles in his final two seasons. Miller was UWSP’s first four-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champion and holds the school record for single season and career pins. Perry was a 2006 inductee into the UW-Stevens Point Athletic Hall of Fame.

Yan White2002 197lb National Champion

Yan White is one of only two wrestlers in school history to compete in the national championship match three straight years, winning the title in 2001 and finishing as runner-up the following two years. White was a three-time WIAC champion at 197 pounds and compiled a 103-15 career record, the second-best winning percentage in school history. He was the WIAC Wrestler of the Meet in 2001 and 2002. White was also UWSP’s Male Athlete of the Year in an individual sport in 2001 and 2003. He was a 2011 inductee into the UW-Stevens Point Athletic Hall of Fame and a 2012 inductee into the NWCA Hall of Fame.

Brad Marten2003 184lb National Champion

Brad Marten secured the 2003 184-pound national championship, becoming the program’s fifth individual championship. Marten secured the 184-pound Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in 2003 and carried the momentum through to the national tournament.

Cody Koenig2003 174lb National Champion

Cody Koenig joined Marten as a 2003 individual national champion, securing the 174-pound crown to help lead the Pointers to a third place finish that season, the program’s highest-ever finish. Koenig secured the title and capped off a perfect 33-0 season, the only undefeated season in program history.

John E. Roberts Wrestling Room

Renovated and dedicated in January, 2010, the John E. Roberts Wrestling Facility is named after the founder and longtime coach of the UWSP wrestling program. The facility features a large office and team video area.

The area also includes a 3,700-square foot wrestling room with wall-to-wall mats, plaques, records, and pictures of past national champions, and a dedicated cardio area for wrestling. The facility leads directly into Berg Gym, the competition home of UWSP wrestling.
