2013-2014 Olympic CollegeBoard of Trustees

Dear Olympic College Students, Employees, Community Partners and Friends,

I am pleased to share with you the progress and accomplishments of the 2013-2014 school year. It was a very productive year.

During the 2013-2014 year, Olympic College programs and events have put Olympic College in the forefront of the community. The College’s developing partnerships, associate degrees, and bachelor programs have helped meet the needs of individuals in our community.

Our partnership with Western WashingtonUniversity (WWU) and Olympic CollegePoulsbo resulted in expanded opportunities for our students to obtain bachelor degrees without leaving the peninsula. Students are now able to receive an undergraduate degree from WWU in Environmental Policy, Environmental Science, or, as of fall 2014, Business Administration.

A substantial grant of $200,000 from the SBCTC allowed us to kick off Olympic College’s second baccalaureate program. The first cohort of the Bachelor of Science in Information Systems program started in fall 2014.

The College’s residence hall, purchased by the Bremer Trust, is now open to students. Livingnear campus and in community enriches theexperience for our local and internationalstudents; it will also help attract students from around the world.

We are anticipating breaking ground on the new 75,000 square foot College Instruction Center (CIC) that will be home to the Art, Music,Drama, and Health Occupation programs.

Olympic College continued to expand itsinvolvement with the community. The Collegeheld a diversity conference Are your RootsShowing: Exploring Diversity in the Puget Sound Region last June. The event was so well received, the College will be hosting its second annualdiversity conference Explore, Exchange,Experience next summer.

The Bremerton campus hosted a successful multi-departmental Homeland Security training exercise; the Kitsap Emergency Management team and local police and fire departmentsconverged on campus for the event.

This annual report showcases a few ofOlympic College’s highlights and achievements over the past year. It showcases our efforts to enrich education in our area for students, employers and the communities we serve. It is very fulfilling to us when community members tell us how proud they are to have Olympic College in the community. Thank you for your support and please join us to help make this year even better.

Sincerely,

David C. Mitchell, Ph.D.President, Olympic College

2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Olympic College was awarded a $200,000 competitive grant from the State Board for Communityand Technical Colleges (SBCTC)to initiate a Bachelor of AppliedScience (BAS) program inComputer Information Systems (CIS).

The focus of the grant is on building Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathways from K-12 to thebaccalaureate level. The college developed abaccalaureate program in ComputerInformation Systems, with the first cohortstarting in fall of 2014. The new Bachelor of Applied Science Information Systems prepares graduates to strategically plan, manage, and apply information technology solutions to business processes and challenges.

This broad-based, rigorous degree is designed for students with a variety of experiences andbackgrounds. The curriculum iscompetency-based and aligned within-demand industry certifications to ensure that students can demonstrate successful mastery of relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities.

These new grants are being made possible due to the recently passed Washington StateLegislature Senate Bill 5624 which aligns high demand secondary STEM or career andtechnical education programs with appliedbaccalaureate programs.

Community college baccalaureate programs provide local residents with additionalaffordable educational opportunities close to home.

lympic College hosted its firstregional diversity conference on June 26-27, 2014. Are Your Roots Showing:

Exploring Diversity in the Puget Sound Region was the theme for this groundbreakingconference. The conference offered participants the opportunity to enhance their understand-ing and skills in the areas of diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism and social justice. Feedback shows this as being a tremendously positive step for not only our campus, but for the surrounding community.

This event drew in nationally recognized keynote speakers Dr. Joy DeGruy and Yoskiko Harden as well as a full agenda of subject tracts with at least five options for each of the five concurrentsessions for the more than 200 individuals who attended the conference. The diversity conference brought together educators, students andcommunity members and helped individuals increase communication, build relationships, and experience diversity in a whole new way.

The Conference Planning Team did a remarkable job, and is already planning the 2015 conference scheduled for June 25-26.

Last summer, she partnered with Mason Matters to host a four day Youth Entrepreneurship camp on the Olympic College Shelton campus. Underserved, at-risk students, ages 16-19 from the community were invited to participate. One day of groupengagement included a field trip to tour a Tiny House. Youth were then engaged in the process of developing a mini-business plan for a business idea that had to be adapted to a Tiny Business Structure. It was a collaborative effort between the faculty member involved and several local community agencies that supported the camp with a grant from the Pacific MountainWorkforce Development Council.

Basic Studies at EvergreenElementary

Olympic College Shelton, through the Adult Basic Studies program, began offering English classes at EvergreenElementary in the fall quarter 2012. The average classenrollment over the last six quarters has been 18 students.Evergreen is a combination magnet/neighborhood school for second language acquisition where approximately 65 percent of their students are native Spanish speakers learning English as a second language. Students come from Mexico, Guatemala, and Taiwan. The students range in age from 19-65; most students are working parents. They work in hotels, forestry, shellfish harvesting, landscaping, and sales. Virtually all the students say they are taking classes to improve their English for better employmentopportunities.

Changing Lives.Strengthening Communities. Olympic College Shelton has served Shelton/Mason County for over forty years.

The international student population has been growing year-to-year and many local students need stable and affordable housing so they can continue their studies. In response to the growing need for housing, theCollege opened its own residential hall in fall 2013.

Residence Hall

Page 11: 2013-2014 Annual Report Expansion. Collaboration. Growth.€¦ · diversity conference Explore, Exchange, Experience next summer. The Bremerton campus hosted a successful multi-departmental

The benefits of a residential hall are many. International and local students will have a convenient place to live and more opportunities to learn about other cultures and perspectives. With an established residence hall, the international student population will continue to expand and contribute tuition to support other college programs and services.

The residential complex is located on the northwest corner of 11th Street and Warren Avenue near the Bremerton campus. It was purchased by the Bremer Trust, an independent nonprofit organization that has given more than $5 million to Olympic College since its inception in 1987. Gifts to theCollege from the Trust have funded programs, services, student scholarships and supportedadvancement of employee skills and expertise.

Initially, the hall will accommodate 36 international and local students. In a few years, the collegeexpects to have more than 80 students staying in the residential hall. Income from student rent will pay for one residential housing staff person, additional security, and property maintenance.

This is an exciting move for Olympic College, but one that is not unique among community colleges in our state. Edmonds Community College, Shoreline Community College, Skagit Valley College, Green River Community College, and Highline Community College are just some of the communitycolleges that offer residential living to local and international students. The residential hall is a natural outcome of our mission to enrich our diverse communities through quality education and support as students achieve their educational goals.

On Friday, September 20, 2013, Olympic Collegehosted and participated in a homeland securitytraining exercise for an “active shooter on campus” scenario with the support of local law enforcement agencies, Kitsap County Fire District, Harrison Medical Center, the Washington State Youth Academy, andKitsap County Emergency Management.

Active ShooterTraining Exercise

Page 13: 2013-2014 Annual Report Expansion. Collaboration. Growth.€¦ · diversity conference Explore, Exchange, Experience next summer. The Bremerton campus hosted a successful multi-departmental

Olympic College began setting up Thursdayafternoon, September 19th. The exercise started at 6:00 A.M. Friday morning and concluded by 3:00 P.M. The activity was centered inside the Science and Technology building, but the entire Bremerton campus was impacted. During this exercise, simulated weapons were used, along with 100+ actors in full makeup, replicating injuries and casualties. A large presence of lawenforcement, emergency medical services, and fire services were also staged in advance all around the Bremerton campus. The exercise area was clearly marked with caution tape to control scene access and ensure participant safety.

The purpose of the exercise was to improve responder readiness and response at all levels to a mass casualty event. With continued cases of school violence across our nation, it is imperative for schools to anticipate and prepare for any type of incident.

“The opportunity to design this type of exercise and practice with over 300 responders, players, and actors is unique to this area and we aregratified for the support of Olympic College, our volunteers, and the many participating agencies of Kitsap County,” said Mike Gordon, Interim Director, Kitsap County EmergencyManagement.

Olympic College President David Mitchell agreed, saying, “Collaboration with local agencies enhances not only the safety and security of our students and employees but institutionsthroughout the region and our surroundingcommunities.”

Olympic College continues to work closely with local law enforcement agencies as collaboration facilitates better responses and, in manyinstances, can successfully address a situation before it happens.

In order to reach its full potential, the College must provide its programs with adequatefacilities that can enhance learning and support growth. Olympic College’s drama, music and arts facilities are getting a new home to better serve these growing programs. Its Health Occupations programs are currently scattered in multiplelocations and would better serve both theirstudents and the College if they were located on a single campus. The replacement of the Art, Music and Theater buildings with a new CollegeInstruction Center that can accommodatemultiple programs is Olympic College’s highest capital priority. The 75,000 square foot College Instruction Center will meet the broad needs of the College for state-of-the-art, multipurpose instructional space.

Master PlanSummer of 2015—The College plans to break ground ona new 75,000 square footCollege Instruction Center (CIC) which will serve a wide range of programs, including Art, Music, Drama, and HealthOccupations.

Olympic CollegeFoundation

Dear Friends of Olympic College:

I am extremely pleased to write a message to the Olympic College community highlighting the changes and activities the Olympic College Foundation embarked upon during the 2013-2014 academic year. This year, we saw the creation of an Alumni Association, increased student scholarship awards, and hosted exciting fundraisers to support the students and programs of Olympic College.

While I am excited about many of the major accomplishments of this year’s Foundation Board, a major highlight for me came on Thursday, November 21, 2013 when the Board unanimously voted to create an Alumni Association. As a proud Olympic College Alumnus, I have looked forward to this opportunity for all past students. The Alumni Association hosted a couple of successful events during the year and I look forward to working with the Alumni Association in the upcoming years.

I am pleased to introduce you to our two newest Olympic College Foundation board members. Sheila Collins, a Nuclear Engineer with PSNS, and Ginny Duff, with Kitsap Community Walk. Each new board member brings their unique skills and background to the table and we are excited to have their input and expertise on our Board. We look to the future with great conviction. The Olympic College Foundation hopes to create more opportunities for our stu-dents and campus to grow, develop and make the community an even better place to live and work. We hope you will join us on this very important mission.
