Last year was a year of introspection and reflections of the past. We explored what it means to be Black in America, particularly black and male in America, and we investigated art and history through exhibitions and historic collections. I hope you will enjoy this Annual Report as we look at the things we accomplished in 2013. Even as we review the past year, we look forward to celebrating our 40th

Anniversary year- a milestone moment for the Gantt Center.

This milestone moment also provides an extraordinary opportunity to reflect on the Gantt Center’s role in shaping people and ideas in the Charlotte region over the last four decades. Public engagement, programming and performances are integral to this year’s offerings which aim to deepen the community’s knowledge of the Center’s heritage and history as a cultural institution.

Few cities have the privilege of prominent, public spaces that have existed for 40 years to celebrate the Black experience. The Gantt Center proudly holds that distinction for Charlotte. During our anniversary year, we will reflect on this moment in history, and the journey that brought us here, as we gain momentum for 40 years more.

For those yet to become members of our institution, we invite you to join our 1974 Membership Challenge. Our goal to reach 1,974 members during our anniversary year provides our members the benefit of unique and special privileges and the Gantt Center the benefit of added financial support.

2013-2014 PROGRAMMINGBlack Philanthropy MonthThis annual month-long celebration in August is a call to action for African-Americans to donate time, talent and treasure to the causes that they believe in. The Gantt Center celebrated with an email series and forum event to discuss the importance of giving back.

What you didn’t learn in High School History with Bernard KinseyA lively discussion on September 9th of the evolution of African-American life since the 1600s between collector Bernard Kinsey and Dr. Tom Hanchett, Staff Historian at Levine Museum of the New South whose writings range widely on Charlotte urban history and Southern culture. The discussion was moderated by veteran Charlotte broadcaster, Mike Collins, WFAE radio host of the daily, award-winning show Charlotte Talks. (Wells Fargo)

Jazzy 2013The 33rd annual Jazzy Holiday Luncheon was held on December 6, 2013 at the Westin Charlotte Hotel. Six Hundred, donning festive attire, gathered to honor Sally and Russell Robinson, Tyrone Jefferson, and Compass Group North America as they each received Spirit of the Center awards. A highlight of the event was the performance by 12-year-old cellist Malik Kofi who received a well-deserved standing ovation. Thank you to those who helped us raise over $140,000 at the Gantt Center’s largest annual fundraising event!

Kwanzaa CelebrationThis seasonal event was celebrated with an African dance performance and multigenerational Kwanzaa-themed arts & crafts workshop, drum call, and candle lighting & libation ceremony.

MLK Holiday WeekendSeveral days of activities commemorated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with performances, presentations and discussions throughout the day.

Soledad O’BrienThe major celebration of Black History Month for the Gantt Center came with the Black in America town hall meeting with Soledad O’Brien on February 18. The award-winning journalist shared her research on the disparities between races, including startling statistics on differences in economic success and education, as well as, reports about the slow response to Hurricane Katrina survivors and Trayvon Martin. A discussion followed with Urban League of Central Carolinas President & CEO, Patrick Graham; Teach for America Managing Director, Tiffany Capers; and Director at the Smith Institute for Applied Research at JCSU, Ron Stoghill tackling subjects including education, unity, and the African-American middleclass.

COOL SPACESThe Gantt Center building was the focus of the April 17th broadcast of “Cool Spaces: The Best in Architecture” on PBS stations across the country.

REGULAR PROGRAMMINGat the Gantt CenterFamily First Series-First SaturdaysEvery Family First event introduces creative, thoughtful fun to the whole family. This past year our families have enjoyed making memories and treasures with mixed media collages, dance, jewelry making, a musical petting zoo and more.

The Classic International Black Cinema Series -Second SundaysThis film series is specifically designed as a vehicle to expose the community to the vast artistic value black film has had throughout the years.

2013-2014 EXHIBITIONSThe Kinsey Collection (Jun - Oct)The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, Where Art and History Intersect, offered an insightful journey through centuries of African-American history, culture and heritage. This exhibition celebrated Bernard and Shirley Kinsey’s passion for collecting objects of extraordinary historical significance that tell the often untold story of African-American contribution and achievement. With education as the goal, the Kinsey Collection has been on national tour since 2007 and has been seen by over 3 million visitors.

Question Bridge: Black Males (Oct - Jun )This touring video installation, produced by artists Bayeté Ross Smith, Kamal Sinclair, Chris Johnson and Hank Willis Thomas, explored critical and challenging issues within the African-American male community by instigating a trans-media conversation among Black men from a range of geographic, economic, generational, educational and social strata.

Perspectives from the David C. Driskell Center:African American Art Since 1950 (Oct -Jun)Works by renowned artists such as Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, and Sam Gilliam were coupled with exciting new visionaries, including Chakaia Booker, Lorna Simpson, and Kara Walker, collectively reflecting the growing prominence - and complexity - of the field of African-American art over the last 60 years. All of the artists whose work was featured in this exhibition remind viewers that a preoccupation with race in American life often plays a significant role in our understanding the complex patterns we witness in African-American art.

2013-2014 EXHIBITIONSNew Mythologies: William Villalongo (Oct - Jan)Through careful exploration of notions such as race, identity and history, William Villalongo, a Brooklyn-based artist, confronts the traditional perceptions of male contribution and influence. His interest in dissecting the value we place on traditional Western art and European history; the classical female; cultural typecasting; and symbolism drives his works as a painter and installation artist.

I SEE YOU: The Politics of Being (Jan - Jun)This exhibition presented the work of six contemporary artists who expand the constructs of female identity in the 21st century. Surveying the range of ideas and illusions of the feminine mystique, this exhibition explored how women of the African Diaspora are seen, from their perspective and through the eyes of others.

ABOUT THE GANTT CENTERThe Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture presents, preserves and celebrates excellence in the art, history and culture of African-Americans and those of African descent.

Celebrating 40 years, the Harvey B. Gantt Center is home to the nationally celebrated John & Vivian Hewitt Collection of African-American Art. The Hewitt, which was generously donated by Bank of America Corporation, features many works by important artists including Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jonathan Green, Jacob Lawrence and Henry O. Tanner.
