2013-2014 SkillsUSA Year! “Soar with your Strengths”

This year’s State Officer Team welcomes each of you to join us on our Journey to become “Champions at Work”. This year’s theme is “Soar with your Strengths”. Many people speak of using your abilities, taking chances, dreaming to be your best and working to fulfill your potential. “Don’t allow the fear of falling stop you from pursuing your dream. Prepare. Practice. Pray. Jump! It’s through the fall that you’ll realize you can fly,” Yvonne Pierre, Author and Talk Radio host. Jen Stephens, Author states, “If we never had the courage to take a leap of faith, we’d be cheating God out of a chance to mount us up with wings like eagles and watch us soar”. DECIDE to take a leap of faith and dedicate yourself to being the best you can be through SkillsUSA Washington membership and involvement. Define yourself by helping others through community service and making a positive difference in your home, school and community by developing your leadership and technical skills through participation and

Resources Be sure to investigate all that SkillsUSA has to offer through the national website at: www.skillsusa.org and the Washington State website at: www.skillsusawashington.org. Note: The SkillsUSA Washington Website will be undergoing reconstruction during early September and may be offline for several days during this action! There is a large amount of helpful information available to start and manage a chapter, plan for leadership and skills conferences and contests, and prepare students through exciting events and activities. The information is there, tap into it. You do not have to reinvent the wheel, simply use the one provided. If you need chapter management assistance, simply contact the state executive director, regional coordinator or state officer. Included in this packet is contact information, event dates, contest lists, competition themes and school chapter lists. A phone call or an email can provide additional information or answer questions. Take advantage of what is offered for the future of your students. Don’t leave them with a gap in their future because you think it takes too much time. Being a chapter advisor is not that time consuming if you utilize the information available and link it to your Skilled & Technical Science Program. Have a good year!

Greetings from your National Executive Director!

Dear SkillsUSA Advisor: Welcome to another year of changing lives! As I write this letter, I am pleased to say our membership is at an all-time high, and even more importantly, active participation by members is on the rise. When members engage in the full scope of chapter activities, we better realize our mission of “empowering members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens.” While this is great news, there is always more work to do, more students to reach and more leaders to develop. One of the ways we’re adding value to SkillsUSA is through investment in our chapter programs. Many of you have participated in our Professional Development Program and Lowe’s Schools in Need and CareerSafe Grants, but maybe you haven’t considered getting involved in the Student2Student Mentoring or the President’s Volunteer Service Award. If you haven’t taken advantage of these opportunities, I encourage you to do so. These programs provide new insight and inspiration, and I guarantee you’ll enjoy the experience. I also know these programs have been an essential part of our chapter growth and improved chapter participation over the past few years. We also have numerous printed leadership resources to assist you in helping students realize the SkillsUSA mission. If you haven’t already, take a look at our innovative educational resources found online and in our catalog that are designed to strengthen the student leader. Thanks to teacher input, we have some new additions for 2013-14, including a poster that will help you kick off the chapter school year and activities that will allow you to easily integrate SkillsUSA into your classroom. I encourage you to also check in to our online page for teachers, which offers updated and essential information to assist you. This includes simple ideas from your fellow teachers on incorporating each aspect of the program of work into your chapter. In the spirit of continuing our upward trend of engaging students, I encourage you to review your SkillsUSA program this year and find three things you believe you can do better. By using the resources available in the membership kit, in our catalog and on our website, you have the tools you need right at your fingertips. The magic happens at the local level, and you are the magician! Enjoy all that this year brings. With appreciation for all you do to make members shine, Timothy Lawrence SkillsUSA Executive Director

Special Awards

Advisor of the Year 2013 Region V Chuck Veloni Aberdeen High School

For 10 years, Chuck Veloni has been a SkillsUSA advisor. The industrial engineering and radio broadcasting instructor at Aberdeen (Wash.) High School has created a program that's produced 26 state champions, 10 national Top 10 finishers, and two national officers. One of his students calls him "the best advisor anyone could ever hope for." His students have gone on to apprenticeship and training programs as well as high-paying jobs after graduation. Veloni also serves as his school's wrestling coach, supervises the school's radio station and freely gives much of what little personal time he has left to help his program and chapter become even more successful, from holding fundraisers to chaperoning state officers at events.

Advisor of the Year 2013 Washington Donna Moreau Port Angeles High School

As an Advisor of SkillsUSA for 25 years, I look back over increased teamwork and motivated students as SkillsUSA provided the 3R’s of rigor, relevance and relationships as student experiences were broadened. Students were provided an avenue for real life situations and developed a network of support. Competitions, conferences and community service prepares students for life and instill self-confidence. Each year club members change as did the group's emphasis on fundraising and or community service activities. One year the club chose to complete four community service projects - local, state, national, and international. Another year we were unable to participate in the regional skills competition, so the students helped to put on the State competition. Overall, my students and I looked forward to our SkillsUSA adventures each year. We wish Donna Great adventure on her retirement. SkillsUSA Washington will miss her greatly.
