The “Beta Club Sponsor of the Year” is a program to recognize sponsors at both the junior and senior levels. These sponsors go above and beyond the call of duty to provide every opportunity possible for their Beta Clubs and members. Beginning this school year, a “Beta Club Sponsor of the Year” will be selected and recognized at the national convention. A “Beta Club Sponsor of the Year” will be selected at the national level for both the junior and senior divisions from the entries that are sent to the National Office by May 1, 2014. The winning sponsors will be recognized at the National Conventions. Principals, students, parents and/or other sponsors may nominate a sponsor from their state for this prestigious honor. The person who nominates an outstanding sponsor must send a one page typed essay stating the reasons why and how the nominee goes above and beyond the call of duty for their club and members. The sponsor nominated must be a current sponsor of an active junior or senior Beta Club and must attend his or her state convention. The information and entry form will be online at betaclub.org and sponsors.betaclub.org . The entry form must be completed and mailed along with the essay to the address below by the deadline date of the May 1, 2014. Mail Entry Form and Essay to:

73rd Annual Tennessee Senior Beta Club Greetings Senior Beta Sponsors! It seems only fitting that this year’s theme is “Making History with Beta” For the first time in many, many years, Senior Beta Convention is making an historic move to the fall. We hope this will open the door to many new clubs and Beta Club members to attend our wonderful convention here at the beautiful Opryland Hotel. As we gather on November 24-26, 2013, Christmas decorations and seasonal events will offer many new opportunities to Senior Betas. It is our hope you will get to enjoy this new aspect to our convention. We would like to give a special thanks to all of those who supported Tennessee & its candidates & competitors this summer at the National Beta Club Convention in Mobile, Alabama. It was a wonderful convention and you represented our state well. We should also thank Mr. John Apple for two great years as our State Sponsor. He was instrumental in the success of our conventions and his hard work and dedication are a high benchmark for us to strive to match. Remember it is important to read this convention bulletin carefully in order to help your club have an enjoyable experience. As you study the bulletin please remember that Tennessee has elected to follow the same standards set forth by the National Convention. Please pay close attention to registration deadlines, procedures and guidelines as well as competition rules. Each sponsor is asked to explain the competition, conduct and convention rules to your club! Again, be assured that our state guidelines follow as closely as possible the rules of National Beta Club. I am honored to serve as your State Sponsor and I am grateful to each of you for this opportunity. I have been so overwhelmed the last two years as state sponsor-elect with the willingness of the club sponsors to do any and everything possible to help with our convention. It has truly been a blessing in getting to know you all and work side by side. Let us continue to do this in the coming weeks and months. Special Items to Note

The convention registration form, which is online at sponsors.betaclub.org,

must be completed online, submitted, printed and mailed along with a check to the National Beta Club Office postmarked no later than October 24, 2013. The registration fee is $20.00 per Beta Club member and the late registration fee is $25.00 per member.

There are NO REFUNDS on convention registration. There will be no

exceptions made on convention registration fees unless the convention is canceled by the National Office.

Participants in the competitions are reminded to bring pencils, pens, etc. that are

needed for the particular competition or academic test.

It is the responsibility of the sponsors to insure candidates and competition participants are aware of all rules, regulations, guidelines and schedules pertinent to that area of the convention.

Badges and a Beta or school T-shirt for the dance must be visible before a

student will be allowed to enter the room for the dance. Badges must be worn on the upper left chest area.

The written quiz bowl test will be administered at 9:00 AM on Tuesday. The top

sixteen teams will then compete, beginning at noon.

Sponsors should note different mailing addresses for the various entries and mail them to the correct place.

Be sure to read all the rules for each competition carefully and mail all

entries by the convention deadline date. No late entries will be accepted!

All trophies not picked up during the awards ceremony will be shipped to the sponsor per their request COD.

An invitation to all winners to compete at the National Convention will be

given with the trophies. However, the official competition entry form will be found at sponsors.betaclub.org. The sponsor will need to complete and submit the form online by the deadline of May 1, 2014.

The Emergency Form on page 46 must be completed and turned in at the

registration desk before the registration packet can be given out. Bring form with you to the convention.

TENNESSEE BETA CONVENTION CODE OF CONDUCT

Knowing that any organization is judged largely by the behavior of its individual members, we who attend the Beta Club Convention agree that our registering at the State Convention constitutes our subscribing to the following rules which comprise the Code of Conduct. RULE 1: Each Sponsor is responsible for each of his/her students. Therefore, students must

keep their Sponsor informed of their whereabouts at all times. RULE 2: Betas registered at the Convention should be present for all scheduled meetings

and on time. RULE 3: Curfew is set by each State Council and the curfew will be printed in the

convention program. This means that you should be in your own room and respectfully quiet.

RULE 4: Members may visit other members’ rooms only with the Sponsor’s knowledge

and approval. RULE 5: No alcoholic beverages, tobacco or drugs, in any form, shall be possessed by

anyone at this State Beta Convention. Clothing which advertises sex, drugs, alcohol or tobacco will not be permitted.

RULE 6: All registered Betas are expected to wear official name badges at all times. RULE 7: Each registered Beta is expected to display and exert leadership qualities in a

responsible manner which will lead to the organized success of this Convention. Betas should conduct themselves in such a manner that their actions will reflect favorably on the school and community and all of those responsible for providing the student with this opportunity.

We agree that any violation of these rules subjects our entire chapter to being sent home and all honors and awards forfeited. Serious misconduct on our part shall be reported to our Principal and our parents, who shall be advised that we are barred from participating in future Beta Conventions, and shall constitute grounds for the cancellation of our school’s charter of the National Beta Club.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TENNESSEE CONVENTION

1. Beta conventions are open to certified members, school officials, sponsors, alumni, parents and

chaperones upon proper online registration. Alumni must come with a group and are under the same regulations as Betas, but without votes. ALL MUST PRE-REGISTER ONLINE!

2. Each group must be accompanied by a sponsor or chaperone. A ratio of one adult for every ten

members is suggested. Convention address of Sponsor or chaperone is required. 3. Each club must make its own arrangements for lodging. Betas may stay any place approved by

their parents, Sponsors and chaperones. Advance registration for lodging is urged, and confirmation should be requested in writing. Bring the confirmation to the convention with you. Pre-registration is required by Beta and a late fee will be paid if you do not pre-register by the deadline date on the registration form.

4. Only registered Betas may take part in the convention program and should report to the officials as

soon as the registration room opens or as soon as possible after arrival. (Note the time of your registration on the general outline page in this bulletin.)

5. Admission to all meetings is by name badge only. This is secured when one registers and will

admit the individual to all events. The fee is listed on your Beta convention registration form in this bulletin. Replacement name badges, if lost, will be available for $1.00 each.

6. The meetings and dance are officially informal. Both males and females may wear a Beta Club or

school T-shirt with jeans or slacks that are in good taste and acceptable at social functions. No caps or hats are to be worn during the general sessions and no fire, balloons, hay, stickers, laser pointers or confetti are allowed at the convention.

7. Nominations are made for three offices: President, Vice-President and Secretary. These must be

sent to the National Office postmarked by October 24, 2013 using the entry form in this bulletin. First, read the rules and nominate a rising senior in good standing and get the nomination in early. More detailed regulations are found in this bulletin. A school may nominate for one office only.

8. The deadline for entering the talent competition is October 24, 2013. Entries must be postmarked

by this time. All entries will compete in the preliminary competition on Tuesday afternoon of the convention. The final five groups and final eight specials will perform and will be judged again at the second general session. Acts which exceed the time limit or do not conform to the designated number of participants, and /or adhere to the rules will have a deduction of 20 points from their score.

9. All entries postmarked after the deadline of October 24, 2013 will be returned. Entries should

be mailed by Certified Mail—Return Receipt Requested. 10. Read the Code of Conduct located in this bulletin to the club and ask each member to abide by it

and send a copy to the parents of each member. Some clubs add to this their rules, regulations, schedule and pertinent information. Some ask the parents to sign and return these. Any student who will not subscribe to this Code should be left at home. The Beta Club is proud of its good reputation and we depend on all of the good leaders and members attending the convention to help keep our convention conduct above reproach.

11. The convention registration form, which is online at sponsors.betaclub.org, must be

completed online, submitted, printed and mailed along with a check to the National Beta Club Office postmarked no later than October 24, 2013.

for registration of chaperones or sponsors, but they must be listed on the registration form. If you do not pre-register, you can still register on site, but you will have to pay the additional late fee.

13. It is the National Beta Club’s intention to make this convention as pleasant as possible for all

attendees. Please let us know if there are any special accommodations that you need so that we may, if reasonably possible, attempt to make appropriate arrangements. You must notify us at 151 Beta Club Way, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29306-3012 by no later than October 24, 2013. Your failure to timely notify us may result in our inability to accommodate your needs.

14. The voting will be done like the delegate voting at the National Convention. The number of

votes will depend on the number of members in the club. 1-100 members— 4 delegates, 101-150 members— 5 delegates, 151-200 members— 6

delegates, 201-250 members— 7 delegates, 251-300 members— 8 delegates, 301-350 members— 9 delegates, 351-400 members—10 delegates, 401-450 members—11 delegates, 451-500 members—12 delegates.

The number of current members in your Beta Club should be listed on the registration form. It is

very important that you list the number of members on the registration form. Sponsors are responsible to count delegate badges for the correct number before leaving the registration area. No changes may be made after leaving the registration area.

15. There will be a Memorial Service during the Third General Session. Please see TN-SR Page 15. 16. There will be a state-wide project for the Tennessee Beta Clubs. (This will be the American Cancer Society.) Pease see TN-SR Page 15. 17. All trophies not picked up during the awards ceremony will be shipped to the sponsor per request COD. 18. An invitation to all winners to compete at the National Convention will be given with the

19. Talent and campaign skit rehearsal times will not be scheduled. Clubs may use the stage to check

placement of students for the skit or talent at any time that the stage is available. Please, be considerate of others and the amount of time your club uses the stage.

HOW TO ESTIMATE TENNESSEE CONVENTION COSTS

1. Decide HOW and WHEN members will go to the convention and WHERE the club will

stay. Transportation will vary according to whether public transportation or cars are used. Figure costs and prorate them. Since each group arranges for its own lodging, you will need to know how many nights you will spend and what the charges for the lodging will be. Prorate that and then estimate the cost for meals. Add all of this to the REGISTRATION cost and you will have the total cost of the convention per person. This does not include shopping, souvenirs or entrance fees to any place of interest your group may visit.

2. The online pre-registration fee is $20.00 per Beta for attending the Convention which

admits registrants to all Convention functions, including the Mixer. The late registration fee is $25.00 per Beta Club member. ALL MUST REGISTER! This fee is used to defray the costs of the convention—facilities, printing of programs, etc. Adult chaperones are also asked to register so that a correct count of attendance may be had. This is also necessary in case of sickness, calls from home, etc. However, NO REGISTRATION FEE for adults is charged. Since admission to meetings is by name badge only, the chaperones must all register and get credentials. (This includes Alumni.) There are NO REFUNDS for convention registration. There will be no exceptions made on convention registration fees unless the convention is canceled by the National Office.

3. All meals for students must be paid for by the individual. Most clubs that raise

convention money pay for the registration, lodging, and/or transportation costs. Each student usually pays for his own meals.

4. Each club usually pays the convention expenses of their Chaperones, the Sponsor, School

Officials, or whoever is kind enough to come with them. The adult chaperones are invited to a complimentary breakfast at the convention and the administrators have a luncheon. Conferences for the Sponsors and an Assembly for School Officials will be arranged, usually following the meals.

5. MAKE RESERVATIONS EARLY! When you arrange for your lodging, ask for

WRITTEN CONFIRMATION of rooms and EXACT CONVENTION RATES. If possible, give the exact number of boys, girls, and chaperones. Tell how many would like to occupy rooms together. The cost is determined by the number in a room. It is also courteous and greatly appreciated to cancel any extra hotel reservations you may have as soon as you know about this. In like manner, if more Betas decide to go than you had reservations for, notify the hotel or motel so that they can better help you with your accommodations.

convention is canceled. A late registration fee will be charged if you do not pre-register online. Please do not send in late registration two weeks prior to the state convention. Please bring the registration form and check and pay at the convention.

7. The State Convention is informational and inspirational and affords three days of

wholesome pleasure. The cost is small in return for what a Beta member can gain from a well-planned trip. Try to make advance arrangements for "side-trips" or "fringe benefits" such as visits to the State Capitol, colleges and universities, museums, and other historical places of interest en route to or in the convention city. The Chamber of Commerce will help you. Try to see and do the things that will interest the majority of the Beta Club members.

We are asking each club to consider conducting a project sometime before convention or by the National Convention to raise funds for this State Wide

Service Project. If you have any questions, check out the ACS website at: www.cancer.org. There will be more information forthcoming about how

to donate and where to send your donations.

In recognition of any Beta Club member, sponsor, or major supporter who has passed away during the year between conventions, a memorial service will be held during the final general session. If your club wishes to honor a loved one we will ask that a representative from those clubs send a Beta member to the stage who will announce your loved one’s name and light a candle in remembrance of them.

TENNESSEE TALENT PROGRAM

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Please read the rules carefully. All Clubs entering the contest must fill out the entry form included in this bulletin for group or special talent, have it signed and postmarked by October 24, 2013 to: The National Beta Club, 151 Beta Club Way, Spartanburg SC 29306-3012. To insure delivery, your entry must be sent by CERTIFIED MAIL—RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED. 1. Only Betas registered at the convention may take part in the program. All talent

participants and names of participants must be sent in on the talent entry form or the entry form will be returned, making your club ineligible to perform. All participants must be on the Beta Club roll by the deadline date of October 24, 2013. (An accompanist must be a registered Beta Club member.)

2. Deadline for entering the Talent Competition is October 24, 2013. All entries will

compete in the preliminary competition. Students are allowed to quietly sit in and watch the talent preliminaries. Participants are asked to bring an extra copy of any CD to avoid technical difficulties. Finalists will be posted. The final five groups and the final eight specials will perform at the second general session.

3. Clubs must furnish their own properties. A piano, sound system and CD player will be

provided. The disc for vocal entries must contain music only. (This means no words or computerized/synthesized voices on the disc.) Any music used for talent must be put on a CD and given to the talent coordinator prior to the beginning of the session. Please label the CD with school name, performer(s) name and title of music.

4. Judges will deduct 20 points from final score for any act exceeding the following time

limits: a. Group acts (5 or more participants) – 7 minute limit. You will have a time limit of twelve (12) minutes. This includes set-up and take down, but the performance still has a maximum time limit of seven (7) minutes.

b. Special acts (4 or fewer participants) – 4 minute limit.

Candidates for State Office CANNOT participate in the talent contest or they will forfeit their right to run for a State Office.

TENNESSEE TALENT RULES CONTINUED 5. Performances should be in good taste becoming the Beta standards. Avoid corny, crude,

risqué jokes and acts and costumes that are inappropriately brief and revealing. If you are uncertain about the acceptability of your costume, contact the National Office. Ample rehearsal is expected to present a polished act.

6. Microphones are required for speaking or singing parts and up to six will be furnished.

Practice in the use of a microphone is encouraged. Students should be prepared to speak or sing INTO microphones as judges will not be able to properly evaluate the act if it cannot be heard. Group acts must clear the stage of any debris following their performances. Clean up will be included in the set-up/take-down time limit of 5 minutes.

7. No fire, balloons, stickers, hay, or loose materials may be used in any act! No

confetti allowed. 8. No lip-syncing will be allowed. The disc for vocal entries must contain music only.

(This means no words or computerized/synthesized voices on the disc.) 9. No object may be tossed either purposely or accidentally from the stage. 10. No audio visual technology such as power point presentations, slide shows, etc. will

be allowed. 11. A club may enter a group or a special, but not both. Signatures of BOTH the

principal of the school and the sponsor are required on the entry form. 12. First and second place groups and first place special in each state will be invited to

compete in the National Talent Competition. Group talent entries at National Convention have a time limit of twelve (12) minutes including set up and take down with performance being limited to seven (7) minutes. Special talent entries at National Convention have a time limit of seven (7) minutes including set up and take down with performance limited to four (4) minutes.

Please do not send an entry unless you are certain you will perform. “No shows” create

delays and programming difficulties. If you must withdraw, you are responsible for notifying the National Office as early as possible.

13. Cheerleading stunts without mats are not recommended. 14. The use of black lights is discouraged due to the inability to turn off lights at the convention site. 15. No use of or portrayal of guns of any type, real knives and swords or very sharp,

pointed objects.

TENNESSEE TALENT JUDGING CRITERIA

In an effort to encourage real talent at the National Beta Club Talent Competition, the judging of special and group performances shall be based on the following criteria:

Evidence of Preparation before Presentation Consideration will be given for the originality and complexity of the act. Evidence of adequate rehearsal, preparation of sets, backdrops, and special effects that contribute to the act will be considered.

20 pts

Nature and Appropriateness of Music and Performance Consideration will be given to the manner in which the performance is given. The content and music must be appropriate and in good taste for the occasion. (Off color, risqué acts/ and inappropriate costuming and music will not be allowed.) The performance should be uniform. TENNESSEE SCRAPBOOK RULES PURPOSE: The purpose of the scrapbook competition is to showcase the accomplishments of the individual chapters as well as to showcase the creative spirit of the members. In order to demonstrate the artistic abilities, the journaling abilities and the general creativity of the members, clubs are reminded that the scrapbooks should be NON-COMMERCIAL, meaning-artwork, lettering and other design elements should be created by the students using scissors, pens and pencils and blank paper. Scrapbooks that reflect student input and creative control from the blank sheet of paper to the finished product will be rewarded in the category C: ARTWORK. DEFINITION: A scrapbook is a collection of photographs, newspaper articles, correspondence, and memorabilia mounted in book form under an attached cover. The purpose is to record each Beta Club's service, membership, and activities for the school year or from convention to convention. A form of narration identifying and giving information on each section should be present. The theme of the scrapbook should be carried out through the title, cover, design, art work, and narration. ORGANIZATION: The scrapbook and contents should be presented in the following order: Cover, Title Page, Table of Contents, Introduction, Membership, Service and Activities. GENERAL RULES: I. TENNESSEE NOMINATION RULES FOR STATE OFFICE

NOTE: Any rule broken by a candidate will result in the loss of votes.

ELIGIBILITY: Nominee must be a rising Senior (presently in the Junior Class), in

good standing, officially enrolled at the National Office by the deadline of October 24, 2013 and duly registered at the Convention. The candidate must give notice of his/her candidacy to the National Office by October 24, 2013, and must comply with the following rules and regulations. A club may nominate for one office only.

1. The nomination must be approved by the Sponsor and the Executive Head of the

candidate's high school. 2. A brief letter of recommendation (number 8 on the nomination form) must be sent

to the Convention Officials by the Head of the candidate's local school when the nomination is submitted. Incomplete nominations will be returned.

3. Candidate must sign a pledge stating that he/she will attend all of the meetings

and sessions of the convention, including the Installation Ceremony and will fulfill ALL of the duties of the office the following year, unless providentially hindered. Failure to fulfill this obligation will result in forfeiting the opportunity to run for and/or serve as a state officer. This means he/she is obligated to attend all meetings and sessions both years, when nominated and when serving as a state officer.

4. If elected and later dropped from the local club or if the officer is not enrolled

actively in high school during the entire term, the officer forfeits the right to serve as state official. The runner-up will automatically take office. It is imperative for an elected officer to notify the National Office immediately if he/she cannot serve.

5. At the convention candidates may only take part in campaigning, campaign

speeches, and the question/answer segment. The campaign speech is allotted two minutes and the skit (promotional performance) is one minute. (No potentially dangerous props will be allowed in skits). Each of these will be timed separately and should not exceed the time limit. Speech and skit timing begin when the individual or the group attracts the attention of the audience.

6. No nominations from the floor, nor "write-in" candidates will be permitted.

Nominations will be closed officially October 24, 2013, unless a candidate is unopposed. In that event, the nominations will be held open two weeks.

7. It is the responsibility of the chapter Sponsors to see that the candidates

follow all rules and regulations.

DRESS CODE: 1. Young ladies must wear a dressy pantsuit with coordinating long sleeve jacket or business

suit. No low cut and or tight fitting tops will be allowed. 2. The length of the business suit skirt must be below the knee, with a front, side or back slit

no longer than 2 inches above the knee. 3. The pants to the pantsuit must be to the top of the shoes. 4. The sleeve of the jacket must be to the wrist. 5. The young men must wear a suit or jacket with dress slacks, a tie, collared dress shirt and

dress shoes. TRI-FOLD BOARD: 1. The tri-fold board is a two-dimensional, science project board promoting the candidate. The size of the tri-fold board must be no larger than 36 inches X 48 inches. 2. The standard header board may be used. Elements may extend from board as long as the board will stand freely without additional braces. 3. The board must lie flat when folded. 4. The tri-fold board will be put on display for viewing at the designated time. 5. Only the tri-fold board may be placed on table provided for candidate. CAMPAIGNING: 1. Candidate meeting and greeting at tri-fold board table in the campaign area during the

designated time. 2. Each candidate will be provided with a table for his or her tri-fold board. 3. No handouts of any kind may be used! This includes balloons, stickers, food products,

fliers and posters. The use of bands, tape players, radios, VCRs, horns or any other noise makers are also prohibited.

4. Campaign T-Shirts may be worn at anytime during the convention. 5. Any Beta member from the candidate’s club may participate in his/her campaign. 6. Placards may not be used at anytime except in the campaign skit performance. 7. No chanting is to take place at anytime. 8. Costumes or other campaign apparel may be worn only during the First General

Session of the Campaign Rally. No costumes are allowed in any other session or during any free time at the convention.

SPEECHES: 1. Time limit of two (2) minutes. 2. The candidate will not speak after the 2 minute whistle is blown. 3. The candidate may use the microphone out of the stand, but must remain on stage. 4. During the speech and question/answer segment there can be no singing, rapping, costuming,

props, slides, videos, or inappropriate gestures used. 5. The speech should have some substance and not be a list of qualifications and/or have

references to flirting. (i.e. I’m available, here’s my number, see you at the dance, etc.) 6. Content of speech may not have reference to the use of alcohol, gambling, drugs, tobacco,

race, portrayal of or use of guns real knives and swords, very sharp pointed objects, sex, bathroom humor, violence, underclothing, R-rated movies, inappropriate songs, and so on.

SKIT: 1. The promotional skit will follow the speech. 2. The promotional skit will have a time limit of one (1) minute. The participants must stop

when the whistle is blown. 3. The dress for participants in the skit must be appropriate with no low-cut, strapless or

spaghetti strap tops, no midriffs showing, no skin-tight clothing, no short shorts and shorts must be worn under very short skirts.

4. The candidate may not take part in the promotional skit. 5. No balloons, stickers, hay, confetti or fire may be used in the skit. 6. Nothing may be thrown from the stage into the audience. 7. Skit participants must remain on stage. 8. Skits may not have reference to the use of alcohol, gambling, drugs, tobacco, race,

sex, bathroom humor, violence, underclothing, and so on. Be careful of R-rated movies, music, commercials, etc. that are chosen. The original version of the chosen song MUST not refer to alcohol, drugs, sex, race, or use inappropriate language. The movie used as a base for the campaign MUST also follow these guidelines.

This includes the music without the lyrics. 9. Cheerleading stunts without mats are not recommended. 10. The use of black lights is discouraged due to the inability to turn off lights at the convention sites.

11. There is to be no use or portrayal of guns of any type, real knives and swords and/or very sharp pointed objects. 12. No inappropriate dance moves or gestures. 13. Sponsors are responsible to check the appropriateness of original song lyrics used in the candidate’s campaign skit.

14. Removal of clothing will not be allowed on stage. QUESTION/ANSWER SEGMENT

1. All candidates will give a speech followed by a campaign skit and then the question/answer segment. The time limit for the question/answer is thirty (30) seconds. Candidate may not speak after the whistle is blown.

2. Timing starts after the question has been read. 3. Candidates will be given an opportunity to see the entire pool of questions prior to the

start of the general session. 4. Each candidate will draw a question from a pool of questions.

VOTING:

1. Voting delegates must be wearing an official name badge to enter for voting. 2. Delegates must report to a designated room to be issued a ballot by national officials. 3. Grade Master Ballots will be used for voting. 4. Delegates must report to designated room at the announced time. 5. Voting will be by the number for the candidate as printed in program not by candidate

name. 6. Sponsors are responsible to count delegate badges for the correct number before

leaving the registration area. No changes may be made after leaving the registration area.

TENNESSEE QUIZ BOWL COMPETITION RULES

GENERAL INFORMATION Each school entering the Quiz Bowl competition is asked to provide a working set of quiz bowl equipment in order to compete and an adult to assist the competition coordinator. The preliminary rounds of the Quiz Bowl will be a written exam and will begin on Tuesday at 9:00 AM. The written exam will eliminate teams to sixteen to compete in the oral quiz bowl matches. All contestants must report to the room designated on the schedule at the assigned time. Questions will vary in difficulty. They will range from the trivial to the highly technical. They will be compiled by the committee members from standardized tests, from high school texts, from current news, from trivia books, etc. There are no specific sources from which you can study. This is a general knowledge competition which stresses quick recall. CONTEST RULES 1. Each team consists of 4 members. Any four students who are registered at the

convention and the National Office may enter. 2. The competition will be single elimination. If time permits, we will have an

exhibition match and practice round. 3. If a team is late or fails to appear at all, it will forfeit the match and the remaining

teams will compete. There will be no rearrangement of schedule. 4. Each match will consist of two teams and there will be 20 questions per match. 5. Each school participating is asked to provide an adult to assist the

coordinator. 6. The team members and an adult sponsor must be present to sign in prior to

the scheduled match time. PROCEDURE FOR MATCH 1. Quiz Bowl is a question-and-answer game (usually) played between two teams of

four players each. 2. Points are scored for correct answers to questions asked by the moderator. 3. There are two types of questions: toss-ups, worth 10 points each, and bonuses,

worth a stated number of points from 20-30. 4. On toss-ups and bonuses, unless otherwise stated in the question, players may use

abbreviated answers, such as last names only, nicknames, acronyms, chemical symbols, etc., as long as such answers still correctly indicate clear and precise knowledge of the information requested in the question.

5. Players will be given approximately 5 seconds from the time the moderator stops reading to signal and then must answer as soon as recognized. The moderator will allow for a natural pause, but stalling is not allowed. An exception to this rule is mathematics questions that require calculation which will be given 15 seconds response time.

6. If a toss-up answer comes after time has been called, it does not count. 7. If a player confers with a teammate on a toss-up question, the answer does not

count. The question is turned over to the other team. The first player to signal, answers.

8. If a player answers without being recognized, the answer counts the same as a

wrong answer. The question is then turned over to the other team and the first player on the other team to signal and be recognized will answer. This rule is in effect to prevent players from answering because they “think” they signaled first. That is not the same as actually signaling first. The right of the player who really has signaled must be protected.

9. On a toss-up, the first response is the one that counts. Sometimes a player will

attempt to give more than one piece of information in his answer. There are some instances when such a response is acceptable. The moderator (and judge) must distinguish whether the player has, in fact, pinpointed the answer or is just rattling off a list of facts on a given subject. This situation is particularly likely to occur on an interruption. The officials must be alert. This is a judgment call.

10. If a player answers a toss-up correctly, his or her team scores 10 points and is

given a chance at a bonus question. 11. If a player answers a toss-up incorrectly, the question is turned over to the other

team, and if a team member answers correctly, his/her team scores 10 points. On the turnover, a player must still signal and be recognized before answering. If the moderator has finished reading the question for the first team, it will not be repeated.

12. If a player believes he or she knows the answer to a toss-up question before it has

been completed, he or she may interrupt the moderator by signaling. If the answer is correct, the team scores 10 points. If the answer is wrong, the entire question is repeated for the other team.

13. If the moderator inadvertently gives an answer to a toss-up without giving either

team a chance to respond, a new toss-up is read and plays as before. However, if one team has given an incorrect answer without turning it over to the opposing team, then the next toss-up will be read for the opposing team only.

14. If an answer from the audience is audible, the moderator discards the question and

goes to the next question in the stack, with all other rules as set forth in effect.

15. Team members may confer on bonus answers. All team members are encouraged to participate as much as possible. However, if there are conflicting answers, the moderator will ask the team captain for the team's official answer.

16. On all bonuses, anticipate some delay in response because of conferences or the

pressure of giving multiple answers. Allow the answers to come naturally, but remember, no stalling.

17. If a bonus answer comes after time has been called, it does not count. 18. If a bonus question has several parts that are to be asked separately, the moderator

will allow approximately 10 seconds per part for the team to confer and answer. 19. If a bonus question is a listing question requiring several answers, the moderator

will allow approximately 30 seconds for the team members to confer and answer. 20. There is a 3-minute break between halves. Substitution of team members may be

made at this time. Also, this time may be used for consultation by the coach. 21. If the score is tied at the end of the game, the tie is broken by a sudden-death

play-off of toss-up questions. First correct answer scores 10 points and wins the game. An incorrect interruption to a tie-breaker loses 5 points, and the game.

ORATORY COMPETITION

1. The oration must be between three and four minutes long. Points will be deducted for the infraction of this rule. (5 points for every 15 seconds)

2. One manuscript must be typed, double-spaced and handed to the coordinator

before the contestant speaks. The manuscript becomes the property of the National Beta Club.

3. No more than 75 quoted words will be permitted. Plagiarism will cause the contestant to

be ineligible in the competition. 4. Manuscript must indicate all sources used whether those sources are quoted directly or

indirectly. This must be done in bibliography form. If a bibliography is not needed, a sheet at the back of the speech must indicate no bibliography needed. A speech without a bibliography or sheet indicating that no bibliography will have points deducted from score.

5. Note cards may not be used. Speech must be given from memory. 6. Speeches must be of the persuasive or informative type. 7. This is an oration. Therefore, no interpretation, dramatization, or acting should be

included. 8. The time for the oratory competition will be listed in the program booklet. 9. Participants must be dressed in professional attire. This means females are to wear a

dressy pantsuit with coordinating jacket or a business suit and the males are to wear a suit or a blazer with dress slacks, a tie and dress shoes.

10. No costuming or props may be used. (i.e. wearing of flag pin during patriotic speech).

11. Spectators and competitors must enter the room before the competition begins and remain until the completion of the entire competition. Order of candidate speeches may be adjusted if they are participating in the talent preliminaries or other unforeseen scheduling conflicts. All cell phones and pagers must be in the off position and no flash photography will be permitted.

12. Points will be deducted by the judges for infraction of rules.

RULES FOR TENNESSEE BANNER COMPETITION 1. The competition will be for BANNERS, not FLAGS. 2. Established size of the banner and height of the standard must be followed. a. Each club must bring an approximately five foot (5') T-standard for displaying the

banner. A 24" piece of wood may be attached across the top of the five foot pole to form the “T”. The banner may be attached to the 24" piece of wood at the top of the five foot pole by using Velcro or a dowel rod may be used by feeding it through the top hem like a curtain. The banner must be hung on the pole as shown in the diagram below whether you use Velcro or a dowel rod to hang the banner. A banner without a T-standard will not be judged. The banner may not be hung from the standard by a cord, rope, ribbon, etc. A knob or decorative object may not extend above the banner or pole.

b.. Easels are not allowed. c. Banner is to measure 24" X 36" (including any fringe). A one half inch plus or minus will be allowed. The banner must be free flowing as a flag

and two dimensional in design. (A two-dimensional banner has the design and lettering lying flat against the banner material. The depth of the design, lettering, etc. on the material must not exceed 1/4 of an inch.)

3. All banners must be checked in by 9:30 AM on Tuesday. 4. The winning banners will be viewed by the public at the Third General Session on Wednesday. 5. Banners should have a universal theme. This year's theme will be:

Tennessee Senior Beta Club Convention Online Registration

The Tennessee Senior Beta Club Convention will be held on November 24-26, 2013 in Nashville.

The convention registration form, which is online at sponsors.betaclub.org, must be completed online, submitted, printed and mailed along with a check to the National Beta Club Office postmarked no later than October 24, 2013.

The registration fee is $20.00 per Beta Club member attending the convention. The registration fees are non-refundable, and NO exceptions will be made unless the

convention is canceled by the National Office.

By registering online you can be sure that all of your students attending the convention are members of the National Beta Club.

If a student is not a member, you can send in the membership application by the

deadline date (October 24, 2013) for them to be eligible to compete at the convention.
