BACKGROUND

USING THE PAINTING, “CHECKMATE”

TO ILLUSTRATE WHAT WE MUST DO IN 2013 AND BEYOND

Page 7: 2013 A Big Picture Look At Our Global Opportunities For Change

THE PAINTING

• A story that illustrates the point.

• As a tour guide took a group through an art gallery, he stopped before a painting entitled Checkmate. The guide talked about the painting, and then moved on. ,

“THE DEVIL VS FAUST”

• The chess game was between the devil and Faust, who had sold his soul to the devil. It appears as if the devil had won. The devil has a smirk on his face, as if waiting for the final verdict, Checkmate!

Page 9: 2013 A Big Picture Look At Our Global Opportunities For Change

HOPE, WHEN THERE IS NO HOPE

• But one of the group stayed behind, staring at the chess pieces on the chessboard in the painting.

“THE KING HAS ANOTHER MOVE”

• The young man who stayed to study the painting was a world class player. When the tour group was two corridors away, they suddenly heard their stray member running down the marble hallway to catch up, shouting,

• "It's a lie! It's a lie! The king has another move. Another move!"

http://btlife.blogspot.com/2008/07/king-…Have you heard this story? It's been told by Christian speakers as far back as 1955 when Billy Graham told a variation of it early in his ministry. Two men are standing in front of a painting called Checkmate in an art gallery. In the painting, a man is playing chess with the devil. The devil is grinning ear-to-ear because he has the man cornered. The title of the painting, Checkmate, indicates that the game is over. The devil has won. His opponent has no more moves. The first man looking at the painting wants to move on to other paintings in the gallery. But the second man, an international chess champion, wants to look at the painting longer, so he waves his friend on and tells him he will catch up later. The chess champion stares and stares at the chess board, then suddenly he steps back, flabbergasted. "It's wrong!" he exclaims. "There's one more move." He runs to his friend and together they look at the painting. "We have to contact the painter," the chess champion says. "It's not checkmate. The king has one more move."

ACTION NEEDED: Protecting people, buildings, infrastructure, and enterprise in communities in every region that are at risk from floods, severe windstorms, earthquakes,

landslides, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and wildfires.

OUR “CHECKMATE” TYPE PROBLEMS IN A NUTSHELL

• Conflict, terrorism, and large-scale migration of people

Page 27: 2013 A Big Picture Look At Our Global Opportunities For Change

ACTION NEEDED: Maintaining and renewing aging infrastructure (city

lifelines) in cities and megacities that are

experiencing rapid growth in population with associated

demand for services.

OUR “CHECKMATE” TYPE PROBLEMS IN A NUTSHELL

• Universal health care needs; increasing risks from pandemic diseases

Page 34: 2013 A Big Picture Look At Our Global Opportunities For Change

ACTION NEEDED: Identifying the site-independent and site-specific factors affecting wellness and illness.

Page 35: 2013 A Big Picture Look At Our Global Opportunities For Change

OUR “CHECKMATE” TYPE PROBLEMS IN A NUTSHELL

• Chronic hunger in many regions and a universal need for clean water.

Page 36: 2013 A Big Picture Look At Our Global Opportunities For Change

PROBLEM: Conserving and managing the short supply of potable water in many areas

of the world needing water for personal use as well as for

industrial use and agricultural use.

THE REALITY

The quality of our life on Planet Earth depends on our ability to devise, implement, and sustain a realistic, set of policies and programmes to solve our complex problems.

Page 38: 2013 A Big Picture Look At Our Global Opportunities For Change

2013 is the time for a concerted and sustained

international effort to solve our problems.
