On behalf of Coiste Contae Ros Comin Id like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to Elphin for the Action Video Productions Junior A Championship Final and the Abbey Hotel Minor Division Two Championship Final. Todays Finals are the culmination of huge effort by all the clubs concerned to capture important County Titles and for each club there is the opportunity to bring success to their parishes.

The Action Video Productions Junior A Championship Final brings together two clubs, Michael Glaveys and Fuerty, who are most anxious to progress from junior ranks to the intermediate grade for 2014. This pairing promises to be a thrilling game with both clubs having well balanced teams and we are assured of a close and exciting Final.

Michael Glaveys were defeated Finalists in this competition in 2012 and have returned to this years Final determined to capture the junior crown. Their run to the Final has been impressive and they will be confident of victory following their semi-Final defeat of Shannon Gaels in the semi-Final. Fuerty were relegated to junior ranks last year and have from the beginning of 2013 shown their determination to get back to intermediate ranks as soon as possible. One of the favourites to win the junior title from early on, their march to the Final has been impressive culminating with a big win over Strokestown in the Semi-Final.

The curtain raiser between St. Aidans and Tulsk Lord Edwards promises to be another entertaining game, and given the great run by our County Minor Team in 2013 I expect our minor Finals at all grades will reflect the high standard reached by the team.

Over the next few weeks we will have Finals in all our adult competitions. Our CCC have had a difficult year in trying to complete competitions in preparation for deadlines fixed provincial competitions. The demands on the CCC have been difficult and I wish to thank them for their work in trying to complete the busy schedule at adult level.

I want to thank Elphin GAA Club for the manner in which they have prepared the Orchard Park for todays games; their work is much appreciated and I wish them well with their new development.

I wish our Referees, Aaron Clogher and Declan Hunt, and their teams of officials good luck today. The County Board are grateful for their commitment during the year as referring can be a thankless task. Our Referees deserve the respect of all players, officials and supporters.

Thanks is due to Action Video Productions for their sponsorship of the Junior Championship and the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon for their sponsorship of the Minor competitions . In the difficult circumstances that local businesses face we are grateful for the support that we receive from them and I would appeal that the GAA community support local business where possible.

Our PRO Colm Beirne has again produced an excellent programme for these Finals. The standard of material in our programmes is among the best in the country and Id like to thank all who contributed to it.

To all officials, team management, gate collectors and everyone involved with the running of our championships; a special thanks for your work. Without the volunteers who give of their time and effort tirelessly during the year the GAA would be a much poorer organisation and your work is greatly appreciated.

Todays finals markthe end of the premier adult football competitions for 2012we can expect that all four finalists-St Aidans, St Michaels,Michael Glaveys and Oran are determined to capture titlestoday.The Intermediate final is a highly anticipated north v southclash. St Aidans are hoping for a speedy return to seniorranks while St Michaels will be looking for a chance toplay in senior ranks for the first time since 1972. Bothteams will be aware of the achievements of last yearsIntermediate champions Padraig Pearses who contested aclosely fought senior final last Sunday and todays win-ners will look forward to competing in the countys pre-mier competition in 2013. The prize of promotion to sen-ior ranks will be a huge incentive to todays finalist and Iwish both clubs every success.Our Junior final is contested by two sole junior clubs andboth will be keen to atone for recent final losses. Oranwere defeated in the final four years ago while MichaelGlaveys were runners up in 2010. Todays finalists are twoclubs with a long tradition in the county and victory foreither would be a huge boost to morale in their clubs. Ilook forward to this final as the junior final means so muchto the followers of both clubs.As we come to the end of the club season in Roscommonit is a time for reflection. All our clubs face challenges onand off the field. The costs of running a club continue to bea major headache for club officials. Income streams arebecoming scarcer while sponsors and donors who weremost generous in the past are no longer able to affordfinancial support. As well as this problem the challenge ofthe scourge of emigration has returned to haunt our clubs.The GAA community in the county need to examine howbest we can face these new challenges and cater for ouryoung people by providing competitions that are geared tomeeting the changing financial and demographic situation

that clubs in our county now face.A special thanks is due to the Strokestown club for providingtheir magnificent facilities for todays finals. Strokestownhave every reason to be proud of the developments here todayand the hosting of two adult finals is for the club a historicoccasion. This is not the first occasion that Strokestown hashosted finals. The most recent one was the 1964 senior finalwhile many of the finals in the early years of the Associationwere played at various venues in Strokestown.I wish both our referees Kevin Naughton and Sean Feeneygood luck today and again I wish to express the Boards thanksto all our referees for their work during 2012. Aword of praiseis due to the referees committee under the chairmanship ofHaulie Beirne and referees co-ordinator Peter McHugh fortheir work during the year in referee education and training. Itis very important work and is much appreciated by the Boardand clubs.Once again the CCC has completed the senior, intermediateand junior on schedule despite having to face many chal-lenges. St Aidans appear in their first minor final since 2009 and last won the competition in 2001. Tulsk Lord Edwards are appearing in their first Minor Final since 1981, which they won, and have appeared in several Semi-Finals since .

I would like to welcome todays Referee Declan Hunt, his team of umpires and todays linesmen; Michael Brennan and Anthony Mahedy and I would like to thank all the Referees who have officiated at our underage games this year.

Tulsk Lord Edwards - a Minor perspectiveIt has been a very successful year for all minor grades within the Club with all teams from Under 12 up involved in the quest for honours as the season comes to a close.

All Tulsk Lord Edwards players are introduced to Gaelic Games in the National Schools of Tulsk, Castleplunkett, Kilmurray Castleplunkett and Rathcroghan and todays group have been very competitive at all underage levels on their way to this grade. They have contested Under 12, 14, 16 League and Championship Finals and half the squad were involved in the run to the Division 2 League Final last year in which they were defeated by Oran.

Many of this current team have had success at Secondary School level with Scoil Mhuire Strokestown, Castlerea Community School and Elphin Community School and a number of players have also represented Roscomomon at U14, 16 and 17 level with Tadhg ORourke and David Carleton representing the Club of this years County Minor team.

Tulsk Lord Edwards Intermediate team have qualified for this years Intermediate Championship Final and five of this minor team are part of that squad.

This group and management have been together for the past six years and have developed and matured as a unit. Their joint management team of Haulie ORourke and Joe ORourke are joined by trainer Richard Feeney, a current Intermediate player who is a qualified fitness instructor. Richard currently manages the Sports Ireland Training Centre on Racecourse Road, Roscommon.

On the way to this Final Tulsk defeated St Faithleachs in a very competitive and exciting quarter Final. In the semi Final they overcame a gallant Eire Og team and they were also involved in the latter stages of the Division 2 League campaign. The team would like to thank Barry Miley of Tulsk Fuels/Flogas for his generous sponsorship

The present Club came about as a result of the amalgamation of Kevin Barrys and Ballyforan Clubs. The late James Fallon and Sonny Kenny were elected first Chairperson and Secretary respectively.

The Club Crest represents different features of the Parish. It was designed by club member Kieren Scott and assisted by Joe Mannion in 1997. The Bridge with 13 Arches straddles the River Suck at Ballyforan. The Church is the Ancient Church at Coolderry Dysart. The Scroll represents Noelle Davis and Patrick Kelly two well know poets from the Mount Talbot area of Four Roads. The Deer represents Deer roaming the woodlands of Derryfadda in the Galway area of the Parish. The Red and White in the centre represents the old colours of the Ballyforan Clubs before amalgamating with Kevin Barrys to become St Aidans.

Todays team is managed by Paddy Naughton, who has managed teams at various levels for the club down through the years. In fact he was the Manager of the last St. Aidans team of win this Minor Championship title 2001. This was our Clubs last title at this grade and second in total. Most recently he enjoyed a successful stint over the Senior team along with current selector Noel Gately where they guided the team to the Leo Kenny Connacht Cup Title and to a County Championship Semi Final in 2009. Today they are been ably assisted by Kieran Kelly.

A Brief History of Fuerty GAA ClubFuerty GAA Club is a small rural club on the Roscommon - Galway border. Since its foundation in 1901 Fuerty has had varying degrees of success. Records show that Fuerty contested the 1923 football Final in which they were beaten by a single point. This laid the foundation for the first title won by the parish team in 1928, a Junior title in which the Final wasnt played until February 1929. This proved to be a blessing as a Fuerty side buoyed by this success went on to contest the 1929 Senior Final against the aristocrats of Roscommon football at the time, Elphin. Having beaten Donamon in the South Roscommon Final, Fuerty went on to defeat Elphin in the decider on a score line of 0-9 to 0-4. Some of the key players of that era were Mike Foley, Johnny Reddington, Paddy Frawley, Malley Ward, Paddy Naughton, John Moran, Mike Cuddy, Pat Conboy, Pat Mannion and Michael Kilroe.

It was another five years before Fuerty would contest a Senior Final again, this time the opposition was Tarmon. Fuerty emerged victorious on a score line of 2-7 to 0-6. However, this was to be the last time a senior championship came to Fuerty. Emigration took its toll but the club survived and won junior titles in 1942 and 1950. In the 1942 Final, Fuerty defeated Tibohine by 2-3 to 0-1 while in 1950 they accounted for Boyle on a scoreline of 2-6 to 0-2. At this time Fuertys marquee player was Willie Heavey who is the only club player to have won an All-Ireland Senior Football Medal. Willie was a highly regarded wing back and was unfortunate to pick up an injury in the 1943 Final.

In more recent times Fuerty have tasted success at Junior level in 1991 and 2006. In the 91 decider Ballinameen were beaten by an excellent Fuerty display in a game replay played in Elphin. Some of the main players at the time were man of the match Kevin McGeeney (the only player to be involved in both 91 and 06), Harry and Paddy Neilan, Peter Tiernan, Padraic Cuddy (current Chairman), Thomas Muray (selector with Fuerty for the past two years), Frank Farrell, Kieran Mullen, Brendan Boyle, Liam Heaney, Damien Finneran and scorer in chief and captain Gerry Gordon. In 2006 the mid/south Final was a close and hard fought contest against near neighbours Creggs which ended in a draw in Mulhern Park and it took a replay in Ballyforan to separate the sides. St. Barrys were the opposition in the Final and this game went to the wire also with Fuerty prevailing by a single point. Players who stood out during the campaign were David Mullin, John Connolly, Gary Fallon, Alan Cunniffe, Tom Hickey, Mervyn Connaughton, Tom Reddington and Brian Keenan.

Fuerty has provided many players to county teams throughout its history with current player Niall Kilroy lining out at senior level for Roscommon in 2012. Indeed it is rare that a Roscommon minor panel is without a player from the St. Ciarans club which is an amalgamation of Fuerty and Creggs at underage. Along with this Fuerty players also play hurling for the two local teams Athleague and Tremane both of whom have had a great deal of success through the years.

Fuerty have had many places and local fields which they have called home over the years. However we now have what is regarded as one of the finest and most modern facilities in the county at Mulhern Park, with a playing surface which is the envy of many visiting teams and a clubhouse and training pitch which has few rivals. In order for this to be possible Fuerty will forever be indebted to the late Brian and Margaret Mulhern and the Mulhern family for their generosity. A diligent and hard working executive transformed their donated field into what is now Mulhern Park. A fitting tribute to the family. The gates of Mulhern Park were officially opened by Iar Uachtarin CLG Sen Kelly and Mrs. Teresa Mulhern on June 25th 2006.

GAA SOCIAL INITIATIVEThe GAA Social Initiative arose as a result of former PresidentMary McAleese and her husband, Martin, noticing an absence ofolder men in attendance at official functions during their many vis-its to local communities over the years. The President came to theconclusion that many men, because of the changing patterns of

life, were falling through cracks in the system and either risking or already experi-encing isolation and loneliness. Following further discussions they extended an invi-tation to the GAA to use it's network to engage older men who were not active inlocal community life and the pilot programme for the GAA Social Initiative was born.

The aim of the initiative is simple: to offer a social outlet that is safe and wel-coming and that provides a route into, and a place in, the community. So far, 13clubs in the county have participated in the programme: St. Brigids, St. Dominics,St. Croans, Tulsk Lord Edwards, Roscommon Gaels, ire g, Michael Glaveys, St.Josephs, St. Michaels, Kilglass Gaels, Padraig Pearses, Boyle and Fuerty. Theefforts of all the Clubs are greatly appreciated by those involved and they havegiven many people a new social outlet.

A good example of the Social Initiative in action would be the activities ofSt Josephs. They began last November by organising a Table Quiz as a fundraiserwith about one hundred and fifty people attending. They linked with existing com-munity groups in Kilteevan such as Kilteevan Community Development, CommunityAlert and Kilteevan Cycling Club and arising from this, a trip to Croke Park Stadiumand the Dermot Earley Exhibition at the GAA Museum was undertaken as the firstsocial outing. The group consisted of former club players and officials, representa-tives from the local community groups and community members and all had a veryenjoyable time.

While the Social Initiative retains a focus on men in the community, it is notexclusive and clubs are encouraged to vary the type of activity they organise toinclude in their social programme events to which the entire community can be invit-ed. Social events and activities should also be open to those in the community whoare not GAA members, as the example from St. Josephs demonstrates. Furtherexamples of club activities can be seen in the Social Initiative Newsletters which canbe viewed at www.gaa.ie/socialinitiative.

HISTORY OF ST. MICHAELS GAA CLUBSt Michaels GAA Club is based in the Parish of Ardcarne and also takes in the area of

Corrigeenroe, which is the Roscommon part of the Aughanagh Parish. Records show that in the late part of the nineteenth century, the GAA was strong within the Clubsboundary, with teams registered in Cootehall, Crossna, Ballyfermoyle and Corrigeenroe.

In 1941, Cootehall and Crossna amalgamated to form St Michaels, with Corrigeenroe andDrumboylan joining later. The new team qualified for the County Junior Final in 1941, and defeatedSt Patricks, only for St Patricks to be awarded the Title on an objection. The first Title won by StMichaels was the 1951 Northern Junior League and this was followed by the 1953 Northern JuniorChampionship. We were defeated by Kilteevan in the County Final, but were awarded the matchafter it was discovered that Kilteevan fielded illegal players.

St. Michaels played Senior Football in 1954 and 1955 (no Intermediate Grade then) andin 1956 and 57 we joined with St Ronans to form a Senior team, known as Paddy Morans.Unfortunately Paddy Morans were defeated in both years by Elphin; on route to completing theirhistoric three-in-a-row. St Michaels also reached the 1956 and 1958 Junior County Finals.

The 1960s saw us win many Juveniles Titles and the 1970s were our most successfulspell; winning a County Intermediate Title in 1971, County Junior Titles in 1970 and 78, and theCurley Cup in 1975. The Club were also defeated in the 1975 County Intermediate Final. OurJuveniles won four County Titles in six years between 1978 and 83 and in 1988 we reached theCounty Junior Final and won the Tansey Cup.

The Club suffered heartbreaking defeats in the 1991 County U21 Final and 1992 CountyJunior Final but we returned to the Intermediate ranks by winning the Junior title in 1993, after areplay. We came close to moving to Senior in 1999 but suffered defeat in the County Final.

The new century saw us take part in RTEs Celebrity Bainisteoir in 2009 and were defeat-ed by Rockwell Rovers of Tipperary. The Clubs Juveniles teams have recorded some notable wins at various levels in recent times andlast year our Junior B team won the Northern and County Championships.

Last year saw a revival of Ladies Football at Under 12 level and this team reached aCounty Shield Final. Today the Club fields three adult teams (Intermediate, Junior and Under 21) andnine underage teams (from Under 6 to Minor, and an U12 Ladies team).

The Club has also had great success in Scr, winning an All-Ireland Title in 1973,Connacht Titles in 1973, 1974,1977 and 1983 and many County Titles over the years. In recent yearsScr has also been revived with entries in all grades.

Finally, when St Michaels is mentioned, the one name that is always associated with theClub is the late Jim Henry (RIP), who served as Club Secretary for over fifty years. We know thattoday Jim is looking down, one proud St Michaels Man.

A word from the Chairperson of St Michaels GAA ClubSt. Michaels are thrilled to be back in the County Intermediate Football Final. Our players have putin a huge effort this year and on behalf of everyone in our Club I hope they get their reward. The success of under-age teams in recent years hashad a big knock on effect on today's Intermediate team.
