Multi-Site Churches/Church PlantingBecoming One Church in Multiple Locations

Room Phelps Hall

Panel Discussion: Daniel Floyd, Ken Nienke, and Stuart Hodges

You may be surprised to know that there are more than 5,000 multi-site churches in the US. Hear the stories of SBCV church leaders whose churches conduct weekly worship in multiple locations. In this panel discussion, you will gain insights that may assist your church in determining if multiple campuses will work for you.

Marketing Your Church/PlantHelping Your Church Go Public

Room Treehouse Children’s Worship

Steve Swisher

If your church has the greatest message to share—and it does—why aren’t you marketing the Gospel with your best efforts? Luke 14:23 doesn’t use the term “market”—rather, “compel them to come in.” In this breakout, you will learn how your church can communicate its mission, vision, and message so that the general public will be compelled to come. You will also discover communication mediums and valuable resources. Whether you are launching a new church or just need a fresh communication approach for your existing church, this breakout is for you!

Financial Planning in Uncertain TimesFaithful Stewardship No Matter What!

Room Choir Room

Doyle Chauncey, Gary Wood, Gary Horton, and Eddie Urbine

In this breakout, you will learn how tracking events and trends in history affects our economy. You will contemplate the question, “Do we have an economy issue or a stewardship issue?” You will also discover the ministry advantages of a GuideStone partnership and how new government regulations impact your church.

Multi-Generational ChurchesBridging the Gap

Room Faith Chapel

Panel Discussion: Grant Ethridge, Robert Rowland, and Josh Turner

“ …to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Ephesians 3:21). Is your church reaching all generations—seniors, adults, youth, children, and preschoolers? Come and glean from a panel of pastors whose churches intentionally reach, minister to, and equip all generations for Kingdom impact.

Focusing on Send CitiesSpreading Light to Washington, DC and Montreal

Room Boxley Chapel

Chad Vandiver and Clint Clifton

There are more than 200 nationalities in Washington, DC. Meet with Clint Clifton, NAMB Send City coordinator for DC, to learn how you can reach the nations from our backyard. Did you realize that Montreal is the least evangelized city in North America? Less than 0.7% of the population have a relationship with Christ—in a city of 3.7 million, that means there are less than 20,000 Christians. Meet with Chad Vandiver, NAMB Send City coordinator for Montreal, to learn how you can make a difference in the darkest of all North American cities.

Orality/StoryingUsing Bible Stories to Reach the Lost

Room #305

Grant Lovejoy and Ken McLemore

An estimated 90% of the world’s Christian workers present the Gospel using highly literate communication styles, yet in Virginia, over 50% of the population are oral learners. We use the printed page or expositional, analytical, and logical presentations of God’s Word. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, for oral learners to hear and understand the message and communicate it to others. As the ones bringing the message, it is our responsibility to communicate our message in their terms. Discover how to use storying methods to reach your Jerusalem’s oral learners.

Community Outreach/EvangelismDoing Ministry with a “$kinny Pig”

Room #323

Randy Aldridge and Emery Minton

Learn how your church can do a lot with a little in reaching your community. In this breakout, you will discover ways to network with others for even greater impact.

Church Vitalization and RevitalizationTransforming Your Church One Step at a Time

Room #320

Steve Bradshaw and Don Matthews

Could your church be healthier? Sure it could. Why not take the necessary steps that lead to vitality and growth? In this breakout, you will not only learn about the steps, but you will discover some valuable tools and resources that are at your fingertips. You will also be introduced to some certified church consultants located near you who stand ready to assist.

UPDATES

Hello SBC of Virginia Family,It’s hard to believe that it has been a year since Brandon and Ish, Innovative Faith Resources (IFR), were here in Zambia with us and since I spoke to you at the Annual Homecoming last year. Indeed, it has been a busy time, but I can assure you that God is on the move right here in our midst. Our Kaoma Central Baptist Church that you heard about last year is booming! God has indeed blessed me with a great group of leaders that I have been able to disciple and walk with. Let me say at the outset, things in Africa definitely move on “AFRICA TIME” in more ways than one. As Zambians say, “If you arrive on the day (not the time) that you were expected, you’re not late!” This seems to carry over into other areas of Zambian life, including the acquisition of land. Last time we met, the church was in the process of putting its application in with the local government to acquire a plot of land. While the application was delayed before the council several months, by the time it came up for review, the senior minister of lands put a stop to all land issuance until the government could offer “improved” plots. Needless to say, this will take years and the decision will likely ultimately be reversed. Thus, the only option is to find the right sized plot from a private individual. Not an easy task…however, our God is amazing—He has indeed come through. The church has found a perfect plot, in the perfect place, from a man who has been approached many times previously but has always refused to sell until now. Within the next few weeks, the church leaders should be meeting with the owner of the plot (who lives in another part of the country) and will then start dealing with the government and all of the paperwork. You prayed…God provided…the church is alive…Christ is being exalted!

Additionally, through some of the special gifts that you gave, it has helped to largely underwrite the costs of Kaoma Bible School. Once a month, we have church leaders from around our district come to Kaoma town for intensive classes. They are learning everything from church administration to the principles of preaching to world religions. This January 2014, all those that have met all of the requirements will graduate with our first class with a certificate of theological studies from the Baptist Seminary of Zambia. It is a lot of work…but oh so worth it. You are investing in the lives of people who will be investing in the lives of many for years to come.

Our newest work area is in a place called Maziba. Our preaching point in that area is about a month old now and just TODAY the Area Nduna (senior village head man) surrendered his life to

Christ. I’m sure you can only imagine the impact this is going to have on the work in this place. The two most influential men of the community are both actively attending our meetings and we trust that God is going to bring this preaching point into a fully functioning Baptist Church.

The last but definitely not least piece of exciting news that I will share with you is in regard to a new home missionary in our midst. Mr. Austin Maseka is the man that God used to greatly orchestrate the planting of Kaoma Central Baptist Church. I have had the privilege of discipling Austin and working closely with him for more than a year. During this year, he has repeatedly asked me and the church to pray for him regarding a possible call on his life to full-time ministry. He has an excellent job as the HIV/AIDS counselor at the local district hospital and was actually recently promoted. However, he has surrendered to the full-time call of ministry and is praying that he will be the 1st home missionary of the Kaoma District of Zambia, only the 2nd home missionary ever in the entire Western Province of Zambia. He has met with the Baptist Fellowship of Zambia and is waiting to hear back from them. Needless to say, we are excited to see how God is going to use Austin in the years to come. Please be in prayer for Austin, his wife, Grace, and for all of their children as they take this step of faith. If there was ever a visionary, a soul-winner, and someone with a heart to plant Baptist churches and strengthen existing churches, it is certainly Austin.

I will always be grateful for the partnership that the SBC of VA had with Zambia in 2005 in sending that 1st vision team of pastors, of which I was part. My family’s life has been planted here full-time for nearly 5 years now as a direct result of that work. Many people have been impacted and touched, and we thank you for continuing to stand with us through prayer and through your gifts to the Cooperative Program and Lottie Moon. SBC of VA family…THANK YOU. Please keep pushing back the darkness there in VA and around the world!

Until Next Time,Mike Smith

PRAETORIANPROJECT

SBC OF VIRGINIA CHURCHES CHALLENGED TO PLANT CHURCHES AT THE 2012 ANNUAL HOMECOMING

Page 27: 2013 AH Program Guide

2013 Program Guide p. 27

The Praetorian Project began in 2011 with the simple goal of planting a new church near every USMC base in the world. The Praetorian Project was conceived and is directed by Pillar Church in Dumfries, VA, an SBCV church started in 2005. At last year’s Annual Homecoming in Hampton, VA, the SBCV adopted the Praetorian Project as a partner project, and SBCV churches quickly lent their support to the project's advancement. As a result of that support and the support of many other churches and organizations around the country, the Praetorian Project experienced significant growth in 2013, starting one new church at USMC base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC.

This year, two new churches are slated to be planted at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, CA and at Marine Barracks Washington in Washington, DC. These two new churches will bring the total number of Praetorian Project churches to six by the end of 2014. The project is still in need of churches to support and adopt Praetorian Project church planters. For more information about the project or how your church can be involved, please visit our website praetorianproject.org.
