Opening Keynote Session: The Adversity Advisor—Mark Black Monday, June 10 8:30 am–9:45 am

Born with a life-threatening heart defect, Mark underwent two open-heart surgeries before the age of one. At 23, Mark was suddenly faced with the biggest challenge of his life. After almost a year on a transplant list, he received a second chance: a heart and double-lung transplant.

Since undergoing this life-saving procedure, Mark hasn’t wasted a moment. He has completed four marathons and inspired nearly 70,000 people across North America with his truly unique story. His powerful life lessons help his audience members live life with passion and purpose. Mark will kick off our conference with a message of inspiration and the power of the work we do.

Luncheon Keynote Session: Nazanin Afshin-Jam Tuesday, June 11 12:15 pm–1:30 pm

Nazanin Afshin-Jam has certainly made the most of her family’s flight to freedom. Born in Tehran in 1979, as an infant she fled the Islamic revolution with her family after her non-political father was arrested, tortured and nearly executed. She has gone on to become an international human rights activist, singer/songwriter, actor, Miss World Canada and Miss World first runner-up in 2003.

Winner of several human rights awards, she is the president and co-founder of the Stop Child Executions. Through her speeches and music, Afshin-Jam hopes to continue being a “voice for the voiceless” and delivering her messages of freedom, peace and love worldwide.

Defining and Refining Our Case StatementWe Really Are Brain SurgeonsThe University Hospital Foundation, Edmonton raised $58M for heart; $30M for prostate. Subsequently, we were asked to fund $30M for neurosciences equipment. To meet this new goal, we had to come up with a case to engage and excite the donor community.
