Award: The San Pablo City Water District recognizes the contributions of the AIC with the "Bayani ng
Kalikasan" award given on April 15, 2013.

Commendation: On June 14, 2013, the Office of the Barangay Captain in Barangka, Marikina commended
the AIC for the Phototherapy Light project which was implemented in Barangka. This project is described
below.

In 2013, AIC participated in research projects which resulted in 7 publications and conference presentations. It
should be noted that a number of these are IEEE presentations which are refereed and which are considered
equivalent to publications.

AIC Activities:
May 9-11, 2013: Trainor’s Training on Solar-powered Clean Water System in Kibungan, Benguet. Conducted
an inspection and maintenance of the two clean water systems which were installed in December 2012.

May 27-29, 2013: Paul Cabacungan gave a presentation on the Solar-powered Clean Water System (SCWS) with Rainwater Harvesting, Emergency Lighting and Cellular Phone Charging Stations at the Iloilo Municipal Hall. He also conducted site inspections of barangay Buntatala, Alibago, Dungon-A, San Isidro and Calubihan.
May 31, 2013: Angeli Silang presented a paper entitled: “Wind Energy Projection for the Philippines Based
on Climate Change Modeling” at the 2013 AEDCEE Conference in Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel. This
research paper was done in collaboration with ECCE, Physics Department, Manila Observatory, and Alternergy
Philippine Holdings Corp.

May 31, 2013: Meeting with representatives of the European Union Fact Finding Mission under the project
Southeast Asia – European Union Network (SEA EU Net) with the Ateneo Innovation Center (AIC) for the bi-
regional dialogue on science and technology innovation (STI). EU is represented by Svend Otto Remøe of The
Research Council of Norway and Dr. Sara Medina of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação while AIC is
represented by Dr. Nathaniel Libatique, Dr. Gregory Tagonan and Engr. Paul Cabacungan. Ms. Gina Gatarin of
UNIID-SEA also attended the meeting.
May to July 2013: Mentored three groups of SOM students who successfully defended their class projects on
Solar Street Light, Stove Charger and Solar Emergency Kit (below is a picture of the two groups who dropped
by AIC after their defense).

May to July 2013: Mentored AIC interns on the following projects:
Phototherapy Light for Jaundice Treatment – at the right spectrum and intensity, blue LED light can
treat jaundice for infants

i-phone Portable Microscope – interns tried to add a small lens to improve the magnification of an i-
phone camera

Switchless Light for Aquaponics – using photosensor, interns wired an LED light on top of the catfish
cage.

Arc-reactor project – interns had assembled different designs of Ironman “arc reactor” and tried selling
them during the movie showing

Solar Cooker – interns are trying to measure the hottest temperature that they get from a solar DIY
concentrator

Music Stand Light – using cellphone chargers, interns are replacing AAA batteries. o Name of Intern: Carmela Sta. Maria (2 BS ES)
DIY spectrometer – interns are using an old CD to spread white light into its spectrum, captured
digitally by a camera and use an open source spectral graphing software to do spectrum and/or
absorbance analysis.

Infant Incubator – interns are trying to control the temperature using arduino IC, thermo electric
cooler, and other low-cost heating elements.

Infirmary Alarm – originally made by Mr. Oppus’ student the AIC interns are trying to improve by using
cellphone chargers instead of AA batteries.

June 4, 2013: Dr. Ting Tiongco, Neurosurgeon and CEO of Medical Mission Group Hospital & Health Services Cooperative, Philippines, and Dr. Edwina Tan visited AIC to seek assistance regarding the installation of solar panels in their hospital cooperatives in Mindanao to lower their energy costs and to provide emergency power.
June 14, 2013: Demonstration of phototherapy lights to barangay captain and secretary in Barangka,
Marikina.

June 17, 2013: Set up of TEC and CF controlled by Arduno done by the Infant Icubator group.
June 26, 2013: Set up a bed for phototherapy light donated in Barangka Barangay Hall.
June to October 2013: AIC assisted Dr. Greg Tangonan in his Innovation Class first semester, SY 2013-
2014.

June 2013 up to the present: AIC has been mentoring three groups of Polytechnic University of the
Philippines (PUP) thesis students on Real-time Monitoring of Solar Power; Automation of Rainwater Harvesting
and Clean Water; and Real-time Sensing of Solar Aquaponics.
June 2013 up to the present: AIC has been mentoring MS EcE and BS ECE students on the deployment of
solar-powered aerators and Real-time monitoring of the health of Lake Palakpakin.

July 9, 2013. The Department of National Defense and the Department of Science and Technology visited
AIC to explore possible collaborations on Aerial Imaging research.
July 14, 2013: Paul Cabacungan gave a talk to the CEO Meeting of Medical Mission Group Federation on Clean Water and Solar solutions at Tropicana Hotel, Malate, Manila

July 23-27, 2013:- AIC joined the SoSE exhibit at the National Science and Technology Week at SMX Convention Center.
July 30, 2013: AIC assisted in the deployment of the Acoustic Rain Sensor for Real-time Monitoring System
in Varsity Hills

August 15 & 16, 2013: AIC participated in the disaster preparedness campaign in Iloilo City. AIC presented
its site inspection report on the proposed venues on "Solar-powered Clean Water System with Emergency
Lighting and Cellular Phone Charging Station" to the barangay representatives. AIC also participated in the
planning on how to conduct the training of trainers to every Barangay.
August 27, 2013: Three groups of Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) visited Ateneo Innovation
Center (AIC) last 27 August 2013. They are partnering with AIC on the thesis projects.

August 30, 2013: AIC gave four sessions of lecture on Innovation at the Science 10 Plenary at Escaler Hall
August 30, 2013: Matt Cua conducted a Solar Kit Assembling workshop for Interns.

September 6, 2013: AIC mentored Ps MSE sophomores who were enrolled in SA 21 (Sociology and
Anthropology) students. The project was on switches light project.
September 7, 2013: AIC together with PUP thesis students visited the solar charging station of Sunpower
Foundation in Tondo, Manila. This was followed up further discussions with Sunpower Corp for a possible
partnership in their social projects in Tondo.

September 9, 2013: - Dr. Fabian Dayrit delivered a talk on Philippine Competitiveness and Innovation Forum
at Room 320 Faber Hall.

September 27, 2013: AIC met with the city environmental officer of San Pablo City, the executive director of
LLDA, members of the MFARMC and barangays regarding the Seven Lakes initiatives. The meeting was held at
the San Pablo City Hall, Laguna.
October 3, 2013: "Solar-powered Field Server and Aerator Development for Lake Palakpakan" has been
accepted in the 6th International Conference on Humanoid, Nanotechnology, Information Technology,
Communication and Control, Environment and Management 2013 (HNICEM 2013).

October 4, 2013: The DENR and the judging committee has conducted a campus validation visit in Ateneo
because they selected the Loyola Schools as the most sustainable and eco-friendly school in NCR.

From October – December 2013, there were numerous requests to assist with natural disasters by installing
the Solar Clean Water System, in particular the Bohol earthquake and Typhoon Yolanda. AIC was very heavily
in this. The AIC also trained volunteers from the University to install these systems.
October 2013, 2013: Ateneo Dream Team and AIC deployed 3 units of Clean Water Systems in Loon, Bohol
November 14, 2013: Training of Loyola School’s volunteer staff for the deployment of Clean Water System
in Yolanda typhoon -stricken areas

November- December 2013: Ateneo Dream Team and AIC deployed 20 units of Clean Water Systems in
Leyte.
December 2013: Ateneo Dream Team funded the deployment of 20 units of Clean Water Systems in Capiz

December 21, 2013: Hon. Ronnie T. Dadivas, Vice Mayor of Roxas City gave a plaque expressing their
profound gratitude to AIC for the generosity and swift response in aid of the victims of typhoon Yolanda.

January – February 2014: The University approved the hiring of a temporary office staff to assist in
various office-related work. Ms. Abbey Escudero reported for work at the start of January but resigned on
February 4 due to health reasons.
January 2014 up to present: AIC has been mentoring a group of SOM marketing students on Heat
Harvesting for Off-grid Charging of Cellular-phones.
