TRANSCRIPT

Each year we hold Anime Detour and each year you come. This year, not only have we sold out, we sold out faster than all previous years. Our staff has been hard at work trying to make it better and better. Whatever your reasons for being here, we welcome you and your stories. It is not just the staff that make the con, it’s also the con-goers, and the volunteers. We can’t do this without you. Yes, you. Together we can build something that is greater. If you find yourself bored or between panels, try volunteering. Sure there are prizes for volunteering, but the real reward is that you can tell others you were able to be a part of it. You were a part of the stories that were told.My personal story began as a con-goer like yourself. I went to Anime Detour during year one, and didn’t know what to expect. It wasn’t until year two that I truly started understanding Detour. That year I volunteered. By the end I was so tired that I slept for 12 hours. However, on waking I felt somehow different. I had helped people I didn’t know; I helped people that liked anime; I helped put on an event that changed me. The next year I “took the Detour”. I joined staff. That is when I started hearing similar stories from others.

Over the years, so many stories have been shared with me. One person came because she had never been able to share her love of anime with anyone and at Detour she could. Another came because he and his friends chose Detour as their place to meet each other every year. My favorite story was told to me by the nurse who came to Detour to take care of a guest of honor. She told me that after coming to this convention that she understood her daughter more. She had known that her daughter liked anime but never understood why. Seeing everyone celebrating, reveling, and discussing Japanese cartoons and manga helped her learn so much more about her daughter. She thanked me that night, and I could only say, “You’re welcome.” I was too choked up to say anything more. I’m not the only one she should have thanked. It should have been all of you. So thank you. To you who give us your time without asking anything in return. To you who want this convention to succeed and try to improve it by doing more than what is asked. To you who donated to all the charity funds that have helped people in places we may never go to. Thank you.

We come for our own reasons but we stay because we find something here that is more than us. Each of your stories is different. But I hope they all end the same, “I can’t wait for next year!” So please enjoy your stay here at Anime Detour. And I ask that you always . . . take the Detour.

ConVention inFormation anD rules

general ConDuCt rules

1. All state, federal, and local laws and curfews must be adhered to during the convention. If something is illegal outside the convention, it is illegal INSIDE the convention.

2. DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED: Anime Detour reserves the right to revoke membership badges for any reason. Unacceptable behavior includes, but is not limited to: fighting, harass-ment, damaging or misusing convention/hotel property, stealing, roughhousing, and causing injury or harm to another or yourself.

3. To reemphasize, NO HARASSMENT WILL BE TOLERATED - SEXUAL OR OTHERWISE: Anime Detour is an event that promotes the diversity of our community. We accept anyone who comes in the spirit of good will and participation.

4. Convention members are to follow instructions given by Anime Detour staff members. If a staff member asks you to stop doing something, please stop doing it immediately or security will be notified. If you are asked to move, please move out of the way.

5. Please only come to staff with issues involving physical injury, property damage, theft, or a violation of one of the other rules. Personality conflicts and private troubles will not be dealt with by convention staff, unless they become disruptive to other members.

6. NO SLEEPING IN HALLWAYS OR CONVENTION SPACES: If you want to sleep, you will need to make arrangements beforehand. No exceptions. We will wake you up and ask you to move.

7. NO UNDERAGE DRINKING! If you are serving alcohol in your room you MUST card! If we catch you serving alcohol or other illegal items to minors, or if you are a minor and are caught drinking, your badge will be pulled and the Bloomington Police will be involved.

8. NO CLOGGING UP THE HALLWAYS! We have small hallways in the DoubleTree, and they get even smaller when you stop to chat with your friends. Please move to an out of the way area to have your conversation. Please move out of the flow of traffic when posing for photographs. Areas for photoshoots will be made available in the Garden Court and main Lobby. Security will be circulating in an attempt to keep hallways relatively passable. Continual violations and repeat behavior will force us to pull your badge as per order of the Fire Marshal.

9. Please pick up after yourself. Please give the hotel housekeeping staff a break by picking up after yourself and others. Treat the hotel staff and property with respect.

10. NOISE: Please keep it down during the late night hours. Your fellow convention members are trying to sleep.

11. LOST AND FOUND: All lost items should be taken to Operations (Room 215). If you have lost an item, report to Operations to see if it has been found.

12. BADGES: Badges MUST be visible at all times. Anyone found without a badge in the convention area will be handed over to security. Registration is important; it ensures that we are able to stage this convention and helps ensure a fun and safe environment for all our members.

13. Please respect the badgers, and show them your badges when they ask. The badgers are volunteers who are helping make the convention better. If we catch you hassling the badgers, we will pull your badge and escort you out of the convention.

14. ENFORCEMENT: If you observe another convention attendee breaking the rules and/or if another convention member is creating a disturbance, please report this occurrence to a nearby security member or Operations (Room 215).

15. EMERGENCIES: In the event of a medical emergency, please contact convention or hotel staff for assistance or dial 911.

CONVENTION RULES 3

weapons poliCy Cosplay guns must be clear facsimiles and be holstered or at your side when you are not posing for pictures. Weapons must be tied, or peace-bonded, at all times. For peace-bonding questions and materials, please visit Operations or consult with security staff.Anime Detour does not allow guns and other projectile weapons on the premises. Projectiles include, but are not limited to: bullets, pellets, water, lasers, and paintballs. If it has a firing mechanism, it is not allowed (Exception: bows are allowed, as long as you have NO arrows or similar ammunition.) Projectile weapons that have had their firing mechanism altered/removed are also not allowed.Use common sense; respect your fellow attendees.Items that are confiscated by security might not be returned to you.Live steel should be left in the sheath (or scabbard) and peace bonded at all times. No fighting! This includes sparring and play fighting.

hotel The most simple rule is this: Don’t break the hotel. These nice people are kind enough to host us this week-end and it would be rude of us to damage anything. If you need something from the hotel, contact the front desk by dialing “0” from your room phone. If you have a problem or need help with a hotel issue, go to Operations (room 215) and tell them you need the hotel department. Anime Detour’s hotel department is available 24 hours, helping Detour’s staff, members, and the hotel all have a smooth weekend.

SLEEPING IN PUBLIC AREAS: Sleeping in public areas of the hotel (including the video and programming rooms) is prohibited. If you are found sleeping you will be asked to go to your hotel room to sleep. If you do not have a room, please either stay awake or go home.

SMOKING: By hotel policy, smoking is prohibited in all of the official spaces Anime Detour inhabits, includ-ing all of the party rooms and sleeping rooms. Smoking is not permitted within 25 feet of any entrance, exit, open window, or ventilation intake.

SIGNS: You may post non-adhesive signs with approved blue painter’s tape on painted or wallpapered walls, tile, and metal in approved areas. The removal of any other type of adhesive is damaging and will be treated as vandal-ism by the hotel. If signs are posted using any other kind of tape, they will be removed and taken to Operations. The rules about where we can put up flyers are driven by the hotel and are sometimes tweaked from year to year. If you have any questions about where it is and isn’t okay to place your flyers, please stop into Operations and ask.

PETS: No animals except working animals. If there are special circumstances speak with operations for possible permissions.

SOLICITATION: No sales are permitted outside of the Dealers Room and Artists Alley.

ROOM REQUESTS: If you have a problem with your reservation or room that the hotel is unable to correct, please visit Operations and ask to speak with our hotel team. They will listen to your problem and advise on what the next steps could be.

PARKING INFORMATION: Although there is a significant amount of parking at the DoubleTree, park-ing is still limited. Please carpool or use mass transit if possible. If you are staying at a hotel near the DoubleTree, please leave your car at your hotel and walk over to the convention. Please leave parking nearest the DoubleTree for disabled, hotel guests, and convention dealers. Please remember that hotel guests need to be able to park their cars.

MASS TRANSIT OPTIONS: The 540 bus stops just outside the DoubleTree and connects to the Mall of America where you can connect with busses to all parts of the metro area as well as the light rail. Most conven-tion activities take place between 9:00am and midnight, so using the bus is a realistic and inexpensive option.

registration BADGE PICK UP: A government-issued photo ID must be shown before we will issue an adult badge. If you cannot prove your age, you will be issued a minor badge. Anime Detour reserves the right to not issue a badge to anyone who can’t prove their identity. You may not pick up anyone else’s badge but your own, even if you have their ID. Anime Detour encourages everyone to bring proof of payment in the event that you are not listed in our books. If you are not listed in our books and cannot provide proof that you’ve paid, we will not issue you a badge.

Pre-registered individuals and groups may pick up their badges in Operations outside of normal registration hours.

BADGE REPLACEMENTS: You are responsible for your badge once it has been picked up. If you lose your badge, you can purchase a replacement for the cost of $45 (cash or check only). Your name must be listed in the registration database to purchase a replacement. Sorry, but starting this year, there are no refunds if your original badge is found. No badge replacements will be issued outside of normal registration hours.

TRANSFERS: You may not give your badge to anyone else or otherwise allow anyone else to use your badge. If you wish to transfer your membership to someone else, you will need to visit the registration counter and request a transfer. All on-site transfers carry a $5 convenience fee (cash or check only). You must fill out a membership transfer form and pay the fee in order for your transfer to be considered. Note that transfers are done at the sole discretion of the registration heads and are not guaranteed. Also, if your information (full name, address, etc.) does not match what is in our database, we will not process the transfer. No transfers will be processed outside of normal registration hours.

Anime Detour is not responsible for incorrect information due to illegible handwriting or incomplete forms (online or mail-in). This includes, but is not limited to: incorrect badge names, and incorrect badge types due to incorrect birth date.

operations Welcome to Anime Detour, dear con-goers! You may be filled with questions, concerns, or just plain curiosities - both about the convention at large, and the operations department itself. Please feel free to stop by Room 215 on the second floor and pick our brains for what you seek! (Please, no zombies.)

Out of the booth, Clarine spends her time producing DVDs for FUNimation, tending to her horde of rabbits and proudly spreading the gospel of sock knitting. She is also the inspiration behind the character Aubrey, a regular cast member on the popular web comic, Something Positive.

Christopher Ayres has been working professionally in theatre, televi-sion, and film since the age of six. He currently works as a voice actor for FUNimation Entertainment and a voice actor and director for Sentai Filmworks. As an ADR director, his credits include: EF~A Tale of Memories, EF~A Tale of Melodies, Night Raid 1931, The Nerima Daikon Brothers, Xenosaga: The Animation, Magikano, and The Wallflower. As a voice actor, Chris is best known for his roles as Kei Kurono in Gantz, Frieza in Dragon Ball

Z Kai, Arthur in Tears to Tiara, Suitengu in Speed Grapher, The Covenant Commander in Halo: Legends, Prince Soma in Black Butler, Yaminami in Peacemaker, Takada Shingin in Sengoku Basara, and Sid in Devil May Cry. He can also be heard as Wagram in the Square-Enix video game The Last Remnant. Chris also works as a professional fight director and has enjoyed bringing his workshop “Mock Combat for Cosplay” to many conventions. You can learn more about Chris by visiting his website www.christopherayres-va.com.

Greg Ayres can usually be found rockin’ out somewhere, whether animated or not. From the loud-mouthed Hideki in Nerima Daikon Brothers, to Koyuki in Beck, he’s always glad to shake things up a bit. He’s thrilled to be able to add the roles of Uesugi Kenshin in Sengoku Basara, Seikechi Tayama in Oh! Edo Rocket, and Abe in Big Windup to his list of roles. When he’s not in a booth with headphones on, you can usually find him sporting headphones of another variety behind “the decks”. From packed rooms at anime

conventions to the legendary stage of The Knitting Factory (NYC), Greg never misses an opportunity to share his love of music with anyone who will listen. Greg is thrilled to be back at Anime Detour this year, and really looks forward to seeing you on the dance floor.

Matt Greenfield has been writing, directing and producing both animated and live-action programming since the dawn of time. His work has been distributed internation-ally by--among others--ADV Films, Anime Network, FUNimation, Happy Carrot, Madman Entertainment, Maiden Japan, Media Blasters, Sentai Filmworks, Section 23, SoftCel Pictures, Switchblade Pictures and Syren. highlights includes Neon Genesis Evangelion, Battle Angel, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, the Godzilla classic Destroy All Monsters and hundreds of other anime hits like Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040, Excel Saga, Gantz, Goddannar, Golden Boy, Gunsmith Cats, Macross, Nadesico, Noir, Spriggan, Princess Nine and RahXephon.

Carrie Savage is so happy to be returning to her favorite US convention…Anime Detour! Carrie currently resides in sunny Los Angeles, but still loves all the folks in Texas, and hopes to be studying theater in New York soon! Carrie has voiced characters in shows such as Ikki Tousen, R.O.D. the TV, Paranoia Agent, Tsubasa Chronicles, xxxHolic, Witchblade, Trinity Blood, Shin Chan, Solty Rei, Rumbling Hearts, Moon Phase, and more. She has also voiced characters in several video games. Carrie has background in theater and is very small

time film actress. She loves traveling around the world helping struggling children and adults in locations such as Mexico, the Philippines, Africa, and some parts of the US. Her latest trip was to Uganda, where she stayed in a tribal village way out in “The African Bush”! Carrie truly, truly can’t wait to see everyone again at Anime Detour! Don’t forget to save your money for the charity auction! Let’s see what kind of records we can break this year!

Carli Mosier has been performing since age 6 and hasn’t stopped. In 2004, she began working at ADV Films, appearing in such shows as Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok, Godannar, UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie, and Xenosaga: The Animation. Carli is probably best known for her performance as Yukika in Nerima Daikon Brothers. You can also see her as Student Council President Yuri Kurosu in Magikano. Since ADV Films

became Sentai Filmworks, Carli has been cast in Night Raid: 1931, Book of Bantorra, Gintama, ef: a tale of melodies and ef: a tale of memories and Hakuoki. She also works with Funimation, voicing Akira Yoshii in Baka and Test and Astraea in Heaven’s Lost Property. Most recently, she was cast as Wilhelmina Carmel in Shakugan no Shana. When she’s not recording or traveling to conventions Carli spends her time as the lead singer for the band Carli Mosier and TMB, working on other musical projects, writing and working on fight choreography for stage and screen, filming movies, reading about, watching and generally obsessing over zombies and working in politics to promote women’s economic, social and physical well-being.

J. Michael Tatum was discovered by FUNimation warhorse and vision-ary ADR director Christopher Bevins, who cast him as Rikichi in 2005’s Samurai 7. Tatum’s luck has held long enough to see his flag hoisted on a slew of dream roles, most notably Kyoya Otori in Ouran High School Host Club and Sebastian Michaelis in Black Butler. Other characters he can’t believe he’s had the good fortune to play include: Doumeki in xxxHolic, Jiro Mochizuki in Black Blood Brothers, Isaac Dian in Baccano!, Lawrence Kraft in Spice and

Wolf, Zarbon in Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Scar in Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. His vocal “stylings” have also been featured in Romeo x Juliet, Speed Grapher, Trinity Blood, Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple, Black Cat, Nabari no Ou, Ghost Hunt, School Rumble, The Tower of Druaga, Aquarion, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles, Shuffle, Shigurui, Glass Fleet, Mushi-Shi, Soul Eater, along with feature-length films such as Vexille and Sum-mer Wars, among many others.

Studio O.N.Y. started out in 2004 as a married couple doing artist alley tables at conventions in the midwest. Richard and Shannon Townsend had worked as freelancers with several companies, most notably with A2 press on the Tabletop RPG Book “Teenagers from Outer Space: The Landing”. During their time as a small art studio, one young fan had asked

them to turn their original characters into a weekly web comic. It was from this pleading that their weekly web comic “Otaku -no- Yen” (geeks without money) was born. In early 2010, the studio brought on long time friend and artist Kimberly Pridemore as a collaborative member. Now that the studio has upgraded, the trio have begun work on a bold new comic project among other comics in the works from all members.

Please try to attend the Pokémon League panel on Friday from 3:30 - 4:30pm in Plaza 2 if you wish to participate. All of the rules will be discussed and questions can be answered.

You will have three days over the entire convention to challenge the elites for their badges. All Leaders will have two Gym teams, an Assist Mode team, and a Challenge Mode team for multiple difficulty levels to allow both casual and competitive players to have a better time. There will be no difference in what you earn regardless of choice. Once you have all eight badges, there are four Elites for you to challenge.

There are two tournaments to enter: If you are able to beat the Elite you will be entered into the Titan Cup Challenge. The winner of this will become the next year’s Titan League Champion. If you are not able to best our Elite, don’t fret! There is still the Titan League Conference.

Can town proJeCt Do you like Homestuck or helping charitable causes? Bring in any food item and help us build Can Town! Donations will go to Second Harvest Food Shelf. Can Town will be on display in the Garden Court photo-shoot area from 1:30pm until 3:30pm on Saturday afternoon.

a DeCaDe oF ConstruCtion essay Contest winner For our tenth year, Anime Detour staff wanted to hear from you, our attendees, about why you always take the Detour. We invited members to share their most memorable stories from past years and then a panel of Anime Detour staffers selected the essay we thought best captured the spirit of Anime Detour. Our winning essay from Briana Lawrence of Sewn Together Reflections is below. Thanks to all our submitters.

I’ve been going to Anime Detour since its first year. Detour was the first convention where I cosplayed, back in its first year before Sheratons turned into DoubleTrees, even before the mighty Thunderbird. I was scared out of my mind because you always hear horrible stories about how plus-sized cosplayers or cosplayers of color are treated, and I fit both of those categories. But even with the negativity you hear about you learn that there’s people who are positive, encouraging, and make you realize that it’s about having fun. It’s about being that character, hell, it’s about being yourself. If you want to dress up like Sailor Moon for a day, then dress up as Sailor Moon for a day. For all of the bad comments there are always good, for all the “GTFOs” there’s a “OMG you’re so pretty!” Thanks to that first year at Detour, I’ve cosplayed more and have slowly become more confident about it.

Anime Detour is also the first convention where my partner and I had a table in Artist Alley. We had friends who did it, but we never thought we could do it ourselves. Since then, we always have tables with our crafts, to the point that it’s really becoming a small business for us. That first table woke up the creative side in us and convinced us to keep doing our art, to keep trying to get it out there, and we realized that that “hobby” can really be turned into something more.

Anime Detour was also the first convention where I saw an “It Gets Better” panel. The turn-out for that panel was (and still is) tremendous. To see a panel of people -- not just staff, but guests -- who take time out to share their stories and show that, yes, things do get better, was one of the most incredible moments I’ve had at a convention. There’s this powerful feeling you get when people you look up to and respect come out and say, “I was bullied. I was harassed. I hated myself. Now, I voice anime characters and love my life.” My partner and I even went and told our story and the support we received was amazing. That panel made me realize that conventions and the geek community in general is more than just a place to hang out and have fun. It’s a support network, it’s a family who is o.k. with you being that plus-sized black girl who draws, paints, writes, is in a relationship with another woman, and dresses like a Disney princess for three days.

For three days, Anime Detour lets you be you. Not only that, but it encourages you to be you. The staff, the guests, the people you meet, they’re all there for you, and that is why it’s so important to me.

ViDeo roomsThe video rooms are Atriums 1, 2, 7, 8. This year, the “10 Years of Detour” room features anime from 2003 (our initial planning year) through 2012. We’ve also included an “Anime Detour Mystery Block” on Sunday afternoon, which will show last minute additions to our schedule. Check the listings by Atrium 7 to see what’s playing. We’re changing how we list our descriptions this year for greater ease in reading. Just check the grid to see what is currently playing and then look up the description alphabetically. We will be limiting some shows to 4 episodes so we may have to stop an episode if we arrive late to change discs. Thanks for your patience.

1. Do not touch the video equipment. If there is a problem, please notify Video personnel.2. No sleeping in the video rooms. If you are caught sleeping in the video rooms you will be asked to leave.3. Please turn off cell phones and laptops.4. Be courteous, and do not talk during the programs.5. Have photo ID available if asked to verify your age.6. Do not leave children unattended in the video rooms.7. Do not block the aisles.8. Please pick up after yourself when leaving.9. Follow all instructions by the attending personnel.
